Answer: As the saying goes, if it seems too good to be true...maybe it is. “We buy houses for cash” buyers are not your typical buyer. They are not regular folks looking for a home to live in or even to rent out. They are real estate investors looking to make a quick profit. As such, they are looking to purchase a home for the lowest price possible, fix it up as necessary, and sell it on the open market a short time later. They are very good at what they do and often make a huge profit in just a few months. They do this by specifically targeting “motivated”—or desperate—sellers. For example, have you ever tried to list your home and the listing eventually expired without resulting in a sale? You probably were contacted by a cash buyer soon after. Discouraged by your failure on the open market, you may be willing to sell your house for cash for a rock bottom price... or so they hope. These types of buyers are sometimes referred to as “opportunity investors” because they’re looking for an opportunity to make some serious cash. Unfortunately, the opportunity often presents itself at someone else’s misfortune.

However, for many people in situations such as these, selling their home quickly can seem like a blessing. Perhaps they aren’t getting the return on their investment that they had anticipated, but a fast sale takes care of a problem they are facing. In only a few days, you’ll be turning over the keys and the house has been sold. Sounds great, doesn’t it? So what’s the catch? Well, say goodbye to any profits you might have made, and probably the equity that you’ve built up in your home. The offer that cash buyers make is often suspiciously just enough to pay off your mortgage. You also have to be extremely careful with these types of companies, as some of them are actually scammers. MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate industry, mortgage rules and the way business is done change daily. Whether you are a buyer, a seller, or a real estate agent, you need to expect problems. Are you and your agent problem finders or solution seekers? Seriously, what do you focus on? Do you focus on the problem or do you focus on the solution? There is a big difference between these seemingly similar approaches. Here’s my take… Let’s say the home inspection didn’t come out quite the way the seller or buyer wanted it to. Some agents get their shorts in a bunch and “blame” the clueless inspector as if he is the problem. Meanwhile, other agents, along with the buyer and seller, get busy finding solutions to what needs to be fixed. Which agent is bringing better energy to the transaction? Which agent comes across as more professional, trustworthy and with the ability to get the job done? Seems pretty simple to me. I mean think about it—if what we focus on expands— then why in the world would you focus on the problem? Why not look for solutions? I know this may seem simple, but I don’t think it’s as simple as we all believe. In

In the early morning hours of Monday, August 3, 2020, Paul Henry Voss, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 80,at home in DeMotte with his wife, Peggy, at his side. Paul was born August 23, 1939 in Harvey, IL to George

he was going to marry. Paul and Peggy were married in 1961 and raised 2 daughters in Thornton, IL. Paul followed in his father’s footsteps and worked for the Rock Island Railroad for 37 years. After his retirement in 2000, he enjoyed time with his family, horse racing, fishing, and most notably, time at home, which he referred to as “909 Breezy”. There with his TV, which he named Curtis, he spent many hours arguing politics, cheering on the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs, and later in life, enjoying the adventures of Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. It is rumored he may have had a small crush on Miss Kit-

and Anne (VanderBilt) Voss. He was a devoted family man, proud railroad retiree, avid story teller, and a friend to many. Paul was a self-proclaimed, “Mama’s Boy”; he spent his early childhood in South Holland, IL but during high school he moved throughout the Midwest as his dad followed his career with the Rock Island Railroad. Paul graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, Class of 1957. He moved back to South Holland in 1959 where he met his wife, Margaret “Peggy” O’Brien, at a PX dance at Thornton High School. He told his aunt that very night that he met the girl

His brother-in-law, Rich, wrote this about him: “I don’t think you ever met a stranger you didn’t like and didn’t get to know in a few minutes. In the letter to the hospital, I specified the amount, the date, and the verification code that proved the payment was made. Again, the hospital involved regularly pays attention to my letters with such details. I expect the bill to this client to be corrected and resolved without the client paying anything. On July 30, 2020, someone on our staff delivered some papers to me from her neighbors who are clients of our insurance agency. I worked on their problems that day. The husband is 86 years old. He got a medical bill for $174.08 from one of the local hospitals. I checked the bill with the system that I use for fact checking. The problem that he had was that Medicare failed to send the claims information to his Medicare supplement policy insurance company. To help him, I sent a letter to the hospital. In that letter, I explained the problem and requested that the hospital send the insurance company the critical information that it needed to pay the balance bill. The hospital has cooperated with me to help other clients in the past. I expect that will take care of the $174.08 bill that was sent to the husband. The wife is 87 years old. In her case, the bill was already paid by her Medicare supplement policy insurance company. But the hospital may have missed the payment. The payment was not made with a check but with an electronic funds transfer (EFT) directly into a bank account of the hospital.

Gwendolyn Brooks: First African-American to Win a Pulitzer TOM EMERY A towering figure in the field of 20thcentury poetry is the late Gwendolyn Brooks, who touched millions of all races with her eloquence. The first AfricanAmerican to win a Pulitzer Prize, she remains one of the most influential poets of modern times. Brooks (19172000) was born in Topeka, Kan. and moved with her family to Chicago shortly after her birth. Her mother was a schoolteacher, while her father, a janitor, had abandoned his dream of becoming a doctor because he did not have enough money to finish high school. Young Gwendolyn was spurned by peers and sought comfort in reading and writing. At age 7, she composed her first poem, and by age 16, over 75 of her poems had been published. She later recalled that “very early in life I became fascinated with the wonders language can achieve. And I began playing with words.” While working a string of menial jobs to support her son (she later bore a daughter), she began attending a series of

poetry workshops taught by Inez Cunningham Stark in 1941. Surrounded by other creative African-Americans in a dynamic environment, Brooks flourished, and her work began to attract more attention. In 1943, she won the Midwestern Writers Conference Poetry Award, and two years later published her first book of poetry, A Street in Bronzeville, which earned widespread acclaim. A second collection, Annie Allen, earned Brooks the Pulitzer Prize in 1950, the first time that an African-American writer had won the prestigious honor. Brooks used her poetry to depict the struggles of everyday African-Americans, including their battles with poverty and discrimination. Using the sonnet-ballad—a method she invented—Brooks blended humor and irony to support themes of family life, war, honor, and hardships. A contemporary, Richard Wright, lauded Brooks’ ability to “capture the pathos of petty destinies, the whimper of the wounded, the tiny incidents that plague the lives of the desperately poor, and the problems of common prejudice.” In 1953, Brooks produced an autobiographical novel, Maud Martha, which dealt with racism, sexism, and classism in the eyes of a black woman in the World War II era. More book titles, Bronzeville Boys and Girls (1956) and In the Mecca (1968) followed, in addition to another major poetry collection, The Bean Eaters (1960). The latter examined the fiery integration of the Little Rock school system, lynchings of black men in the South, and failed efforts of white liberals to help the plight of African-Americans. These works demonstrated not only her growing concern with social issues, but also a move toward free verse and away from traditional styles.

Brooks underwent a spiritual transformation at the Second Black Writers’ Conference at Fisk University in 1967, where, she said, she “rediscovered her blackness.” Some critics charged that her work took on a more radical tone, but her critical respect blossomed. Biographer D.H. Melhem wrote that Brooks “enriches both black and white cultures by revealing essential life, its universal identities, and the challenge it poses.” During her life, Brooks taught poetry at numerous colleges and universities, including Columbia, Wisconsin, and Chicago State, where her papers are held. She received over 70 honorary degrees, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Endowment of the Arts. She was also named a Jefferson Lecturer by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1994, the government’s highest honor for career achievement in the humanities. In 1998, Congress declared Brooks a “living legend.” Brooks considered her greatest accomplishment to be her work with youth. For three decades, she sponsored poetry competitions for students, paying expenses from her own pocket. Brooks once noted that “all my life is not writing. My greatest interest is being involved with young people.” Brooks died at her home on Chicago’s south side on Dec. 3, 2000. In a ceremony on June 6, 2003, the Illinois State Library building in Springfield was named in honor of Gwendolyn Brooks, a gentle spirit who provided a powerful voice in modern American literature. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD “You’re so vain!” sang Carly Simon in her famous 1972 hit. “You probably think this song is about you. You’re so vain. I’ll bet you think this song is about you. Don’t you? Don’t you?” Apparently, Carly was singing about a self-absorbed lover who thought the world—and other people—revolved around him. Today we call such people narcissists. They are hard to live with because “it’s all about them.” How do you feel, then, about a God who insists that we and the entire universe exist for his glory? How do you feel about a God who demands that the world revolve around him? This is the God of the Bible. He redeems human beings “for the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:12b). It’s all about him! Is that the kind of God you want to be around? Doesn’t that make him like the narcissists you know? It would, if God were a human being like you and me.

But God alone is infinitely great, good and beautiful. He created humanity to value and enjoy him as infinitely great, good, and beautiful in relationship with him. We are deeply satisfied only when we center our lives on him as our ultimate Source of joy. Think of the hub of a bicycle wheel. It belongs at the center. The rim and the spokes should revolve around it. If a spoke insisted it should be at the center, it would be a narcissist. But when the hub insists on being at the center, it is good and right. The well-being and function of the entire wheel depends on it! Psalm 150:6 sums up the ultimate purpose of everything and everyone: “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Needs vs. Wants NANCY ZEKVELD Having kids has often made me hone in on this lesson. Mom - I need … “insert something they definitely don’t need” right now! I explain to them that a need is something we must have in order to live like shelter or food, not buying it would impact our lives negatively.! Want Is something we’d like to have but can survive without like new clothing or the latest movie. So when the kids were young they needed diapers, they didn’t need three oversized stuffed unicorns!! Needs and wants are uniquely personal to each of us in our circumstances and you may find that your answers are different than those of your family or friends. You need to identify what’s important to you! There are options available to make things fit our budget. Can you borrow it? If you only need it for a short period of time this can work - only don’t forget to return it or you might need to find some new friends! Can you buy it cheaper somewhere else? Are there cheaper options of another brand that will do just as well? Can you buy it second hand? Check out the ‘used’ option on Amazon. I have often purchased ‘used’ items that are still in original packaging. So what happens when you can’t buy what you need? It’s a difficult season. Taking a hard look at how we categorize what is a need and what is a want is a good

place to start. Where are we living beyond our means? Do we need to consider downsizing home or vehicle? At times our wants feel like needs so it gets tricky. As a Christian “ I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:12-13 (The Bible) Being able to think right about needs and wants and believing that we can thankfully say “I have enough,” and learning contentment, will help us to avoid getting into debt in the first place because we are not buying what we actually don’t need.
