Space Available In Indiana’s On My Way Pre-K Program With the 2020/2021 school year underway in much of our state, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration wants families to know that there is still space available in all of Indiana’s counties in the statewide On My Way Pre-K program. High-quality pre-K providers from all over Indiana are following guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help low-income 4-year-olds be ready to start kindergarten next year, while making child health and safety the top priority. On My Way Pre-K provides children from low-income families with free access to high-quality pre-K, to help prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond. For more information about On My Way Pre-K and to apply online visit OnMyWayPreK.org. In accordance with guidance from the CDC, early care and education providers are following a number of health and safety recommendations while serving families during COVID-19. These include: · Drop-off and pick-up procedures · Sanitizing and cleaning · Social distancing · Health screenings · Personal protective equipment · Enforcement of fever- and symptom-free policies · Personal hygiene These recommendations are outlined in a colorful, animated video to help reassure families of the steps being taking to protect their children while they are beginning their educational journey. Other tools and information, including a checklist to help families feel confident, are available at

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that the expiration date for valid driver’s licenses held by Illinois drivers who are 75 years of age or older has been extended for a period of one year past the licenses’ current 2020 expiration date. As a result, drivers age 75 and older with a 2020 driver’s license expiration date do not need to visit a facility to renew their driver’s license until shortly before their birthday in 2021. “I am mindful of the heightened risks associated with seniors contracting COVID-19, and that is why I have authorized this important change during this challenging and unique time,” said White. There are approximately 147,000 drivers age 75 and over with expired or expiring driver’s licenses in 2020. Letters are being sent to drivers that qualify for this extension. The letter should be kept with the qualifying driver as further proof of the one-year extension. In addition, driving records on the Secretary of State’s computer system have been updated to show the new 2021 expiration dates for qualified drivers, and law enforcement agencies both state and nationwide have been notified of the extended expiration dates. In addition to being 75 of age or older, the driver must have a valid license; drivers who

are suspended or revoked do not qualify for the one-year extension. White is reminding all other drivers that expiration dates for driver’s licenses/ID cards and license plate stickers have been extended until Nov. 1, 2020. As a result, expired documents will remain valid until Nov. 1 so customers under age 75 do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during hot weather. For those customers who must visit a facility, face masks are required. In addition, these customers are asked to be patient due to heavy volume and to be prepared to wait outside in various types of weather. This is due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time. White continues to urge the public to consider using online services when possible instead of visiting a facility due to heavy customer volume. Customers who can conduct business online may go to HYPERLINK “http://www.cyberdriveillinois. com”www.cyberdriveillinois.com to take advantage of online services – such as renewing license plate stickers – from the comfort of their own home. People who conduct online transactions will avoid waiting in line at a facility.

IL Seniors 75+ Get One-Year Extension on Driver’s Licenses

BrighterFuturesIndiana.org/BackToWork. To enroll in On My Way Pre-K, families must meet certain eligibility requirements. The family must have an income below 127 percent of the federal poverty level. The child must be 4 years old by Aug. 1, 2020, and starting kindergarten in the 2021/2022 school year. Parents or guardians in the household must be working, going to school or attending job training. There also may be eligibility for families with income up to 185% of the federal poverty level and one parent or guardian who is working, going to school or attending job training or a parent/guardian who receives Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income benefits. Detailed information about eligibility is available here. Earlier this year, Indiana’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning introduced a new, easier-to-use online application called “Early Ed Connect,” which families can use to apply for both On My Way Pre-K and child care assistance provided in Indiana via the federal Child Care Development Fund or “CCDF.” Enrolling a child in On My Way Pre-K has benefits for the whole family. Pre-K equips children with necessary social skills to prepare the child for kindergarten and beyond, while allowing parents and guardians to focus on their own work or education. The Office of Early Childhood and Out-ofSchool Learning is a division of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. Families may call 800-299-1627 for assistance from an early learning referral specialist or for other questions about On My Way Pre-K.

Bishop Noll Offers New STEM Course in Biomedical Science A lifeless body lay behind police tape as inquisitive investigators took photos on iPads and looked for clues. “Look, there’s a bug on the body,” one said. “I see some blood splatters,” said another. The death scene was staged in the back of Bishop Noll Institute’s new STREAM Lab, and investigators were Bishop Noll students in a new course called Principles of Biomedical Science. This interactive learning experience is part of a unit on forensics and is the first of several cool activities in this course, said Bishop Noll science teacher Rebecca Dostatni said. As part of its STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Math) initiative, Bishop Noll added the new course this semester to give students the chance to explore concepts of biology and medicine as they take on roles of different medical professionals to solve real-world problems. Dostanti completed two weeks of professional development this summer to gain skills to teach the course. She learned how to challenge students in various scenarios, including investigating a crime scene to solve a mystery, diagnosing and proposing treatment to patients in a family medical practice, tracking down and containing a medical outbreak at a local hospital, stabilizing a patient during an emergency, and collaborating with others to design solutions to local and global medical problems. The next unit will include a fake, but realistic, phlebotomy arm that will allow students to learn how to draw blood, Dostatni said. “We will also do microbiology lessons when studying the ‘outbreak’ unit, and students will learn how to culture and analyze bacteria in petri dishes.” All of the students who registered for the course this semester are girls. Most are sophomores, but the material is interesting and challenging enough for juniors and seniors as well, Dostatni said. Several of the students are interested in nursing or medicine. “All of the students seem to be extremely curious and excited about the course. I can’t say enough great things about this intelligent, positive, strong, driven, confident group of young women,” Dostatni said. “They seem completely ready to take on any challenge that awaits them. I can already tell it’s going to be a great year thanks to their energy and inquisitive minds.” “I’m looking forward to solving our first mystery, and finding out who or what killed the person,” said student sophomore Maria Carbajal, who hopes to learn more about the nursing field and gain knowledge about how police officers investigate crimes. She is thinking of a career in nursing or immigration law.

Sophomore Airyal Smith chose to take the course because she wants to major in biomedical engineering/science in college and would potentially like to work in a hospital setting. “I hope to learn about basic biomedical sciences to help me be ‘ahead of the game’ so to speak when I’m heading into my college life. Plus, this class will help show me if biomedical sciences is something for me to continue to have a passion for.” Smith said, “I am interested in sciences of almost any kind. I come from a family that have all studied in some sort of science, math, and engineering and I intend to do the same. I’ve had a fascination with all sorts of STEM activities since a younger age and am really excited to have the chance to learn all about my favorite subjects.” While at Noll, Smith has taken biology and is currently taking chemistry. She encourages other students to sign up for the biomedical science course. “It’s a hands-on class, and I personally think that’s the best way to learn.” Classmate Maria Quiroga, sophomore, is also considering a career in the medical field. “I am especially interested in science because I feel that there are many career choices in science. When I grow up, I want to be a pediatrician. I hope to gain information on possible careers in which I can use the skills I learned in this class. Quiroga has taken chemistry and is taking AP environmental science at Bishop Noll. She would tell potential students that Bishop Noll offers a variety of science classes that touch on different possible career choices. “I think this course is critical to those students interested in any career related to healthcare,” said Dostatni, a 2000 BNI alumna and head of Bishop Noll’s science department. “The students learn about real-life connections more so than in regular science courses. Understanding biomedical science will allow students to have the skill set to identify biomedical-related problems, which will lead them to innovation ideas. These are the kind of skills we will need people to continue to have in the future. In our current world, innovation in testing for COVID-19 is just one example of the importance of biomedical innovation skills for the purpose of human health.” The next course offered in Noll’s STEM biomedical pathway is still being determined but will be either Human Body Systems or Medical Interventions. The final course will be Biomedical Innovation. For more information on becoming a Bishop Noll student, please contact Jeff Stur, director of admissions, at jstur@bishopnoll.org or (219) 932-9058, ext. 1008. Visit bishopnoll.org for more information.

$150 Million in IL Emergency Mortgage Assistance Coming Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) announced the opening of the state’s new Emergency Mortgage Assistance (EMA) program to assist homeowners who have seen their income decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the EMA program, IHDA will allocate grants up to $15,000 to help income-eligible homeowners who have struggled to make their mortgage payments as a result of the pandemic. Applications are now available at ema.ihda.org and IHDA expects to assist approximately 10,000 households before the end of 2020. The Household Pulse Survey conducted by the U.S. Census found that over 1 in 10 Illinois homeowners have little-to-no confidence in making their mortgage payment in September. A single foreclosure costs the homeowner, servicer, and local government nearly $80,000, adding additional strain to the housing cycle. Foreclosed homes also lower neighboring property values by up to 3.9 percent according to the Federal Reserve. The Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (EMA) will assist homeowners who have experienced a COVID-19-related loss of income resulting in past due mortgage balances sometime after March 2020. Approved applicants will receive up to $15,000 paid directly to their mortgage servicer. Assistance will cover the homeowner’s past due or forbearance balance and their regular mortgage payments through December 30, 2020, or until the funding is exhausted, whichever comes first. Payments may

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

include all escrowed first mortgage expenses including property taxes, insurance and certain fees. The assistance will be in the form of a grant and repayment will not be required. Applications for EMA will be accepted from August 24th through September 4th. Due to anticipated high volume, the application window may close early. IHDA will use a thirdparty entity to select a pool of applications to be reviewed for eligibility. The program is expected to assist approximately 10,000 households. Apply online at: ema.ihda.org. Homeowner Eligibility: Household adjusted gross income from 2019 Tax Return was at or below 120 percent of the Area Median Income An adult member of the household has had a loss of income due to the COVID-19 crisis on or after March 1, 2020 Homeowner’s mortgage was current through February 29, 2020 The mortgage is past due or in forbearance. Financial assistance from the EMA program is funded through Illinois’ allocation of federal Coronavirus Relief Funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act (P.L. 116-136). Passed in March 2020, the CARES Act provided $3.5 billion in Coronavirus Relief Funds to the State of Illinois to help residents and businesses impacted by the pandemic. In May, the Illinois General Assembly directed $396 million of this funding to IHDA to provide direct assistance to struggling renters and homeowners. The funding must be completely distributed by December 30, 2020.

Are You “Show-Ready?” MIKE BUDER more annoying than listening to a barking dog the whole time you’re viewing a home. Don’t be there when the agent and the buyers arrive. Besides the safety aspects regarding COVID-19, it’s awkward and makes the buyers uncomfortable. Buyers want to be able to peek into closets and kitchen cabinets. They want to be able to discuss what they like and don’t like with their agent and each other. If you’re there, it will probably be a short showing! Leave the selling to the agent. Many sellers assume the showing agent will arrive ahead of time to get the home show-ready. If I’m only showing one home, I often arrive early and get the lights on. However, if I’m showing more than one home, I have the buyers with me and we walk in at the same time for that important first impression. Buyers decide in the first 60 seconds if they like the home. Get your home showready and make the most of that minute! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. Your comments are always welcome. Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman

While showing homes the other day, I began to wonder why so many occupied homes are not properly prepared for showings. Most sellers know in advance that their home is going to be shown. When you get that call, it’s almost “show time.” Have a plan of action to get your home in “show-ready shape.” Open all the blinds and turn on all the lights. Homes that are light and bright appear larger and more inviting. If you have ceiling fans, turn them all on low. Have some soft music playing. Scents will help to create emotion. In years past, we would leave a drop of vanilla on a light bulb. When the agent turned on the light, the heat would release the vanilla fragrance into the air. Times have changed and now we can simply purchase small air fresheners. While some fragrance is good, too much can be overpowering. If you have time, run the vacuum cleaner over the carpets. Buyer’s notice when the carpets look like nobody has walked on them. While you may love your pets, many people are afraid of them and they often get in the way. Taking your pets with you during the showing time is the best idea. Some dogs are crate-trained and sit quietly in their crate. However, there’s nothing

Five Timely Seasonal DIY Home Improvement Projects

FAMILY FEATURES The calendar pages may be turning fast, but now is the perfect time to do some pre-fall work around the house. Wrap up home improvement projects now before the weather turns cold. Consider these five easy DIY tasks that can set you up for a warm, safe and pest-free fall: Perform routine HVAC maintenance. Heating and cooling systems need regular service to operate at peak efficiency. Some tasks are best left to the pros, but there is plenty you can do on your own to minimize expenses and ensure your unit maintains its performance level. With the breaker and gas off, wipe the exterior of your furnace with a damp rag then remove the access

door and vacuum the burners, base and blower compartment. Remove and clean the blower with a vacuum and small brush then use a drinking straw to blow dust off the pilot. Also inspect the flame sensor, drive belt and air filter, and clean or replace as needed. Air seal drafty areas. The gaps around windows and door frames give unwanted air an open invitation into a home. However, you can quickly and easily block the flow of air for greater comfort and lower energy bills. If the doors and windows are already finished, start by removing the trim. Prep the area by removing dust and debris. Using a quality sealant like Great Stuff Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant, apply the foam to fill in about 50% of the gap around the window or door and framework, allowing room for the foam to expand. Wipe away imperfections and let sit 10-15 minutes until it’s no longer tacky. Gently press the expanded foam into the gap using a putty knife. Check for damage to hardscaping. Walkways, patios and decks are all susceptible to wear that can lead to tripping hazards or allow rain, snow and ice to seep in and create larger problems. Take time to thoroughly assess these hardscape features and identify issues like loose stones and cracks in concrete that need repairs. Securing materials, filling cracks and patching problem areas can help prevent further damage during the colder months while restoring aesthetic appeal. Inspect your home’s exterior. Many elements of your home serve essential roles in protecting your safety, regulating your home’s efficiency and preventing damage. It’s important to regularly check your roof for signs it needs repaired, such as missing or cracked shingles or noticeable sagging. Gutters can also accumulate a great deal of debris from falling leaves. Clearing these before cooler temperatures set in can help ensure rain has a clear path away from your house, protecting the walls and foundation. Also pay attention to other elements like paint that may require periodic updates to maintain its protective function. Eliminate entry points for pests. When temperatures start dropping, you’re likely to see some movement with creatures who want to enjoy the comfort of your home. Make it clear they’re not welcome by sealing up places they may be creeping in. A solution like Great Stuff Pestblock Insulating Foam Sealant lets you fill gaps and openings with a quick bead of foam. If a rodent has an established pathway, try using a combination of steel wool and the foam to deter it from gnawing through the barrier. Find additional tips for seasonal home projects at greatstuff.dupont.com.

CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS The Illinois Housing Development Authority is now accepting applications for grants to address vacant and abandoned housing throughout the state. “Blight affects many communities, large and small across Illinois, and it is critical that municipalities have the tools they need to address the economic and social impact that vacant homes continue to impose in neighborhoods throughout the state,” IHDA executive director Kristin Faust said in a news release. “This is why IHDA is committed to helping Illinois cities and towns as they tackle their local housing needs.” Funding for the grants comes from the state’s Strong Communities Program, which was established earlier this year through funding from the state’s Rebuild Illinois capital plan. A total of $30 million will be awarded through the program over three application periods, including $10 million available in the first wave. The agency expects that over all three rounds, the program will finance the rehabilitation of approximately 1,000 abandoned homes and the demolition of another 500 blighted properties deemed

beyond repair. Grants will be awarded in amounts of up to $250,000 to local government agencies to return residential properties to productive and taxable use, or for demolition, IHDA said. The program will also reimburse municipalities for removing trees, shrubs and debris, conducting lot treatment and greening, and other costs associated with returning blighted properties to a productive state. Cities, counties and land banks located in Illinois are eligible to apply for the grants. Cities and counties may also submit joint applications. Regional planning commissions are also eligible to apply on behalf of the units of government they serve. The current application window will remain open until 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Information about how to apply is available through the IHDA website, www.ihda.org/ my-community/revitalization-programs. Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service covering state government and distributed to more than 400 newspapers statewide. It is funded primarily by the Illinois Press Foundation and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

National Suicide Prevention Week is September 6 – 12 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the results of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System (YRBSS). The YRBSS is a survey, conducted by the CDC, that includes national, state, and local school-based representative samples of 9th through 12th grade students. The purpose is to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth in the United States. The surveys are conducted every two years to determine the prevalence of these health risk behaviors. Behaviors that contribute to unhealthy lifestyles and those that indicate possible depression and/or suicidal ideation are included. Currently, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for high school aged youth in Illinois. The four questions below are included in the YRBSS and relate to suicidal thinking. The results from our Illinois high school students are also listed. Have you experienced the feeling of hopelessness and sadness for a constant period of two weeks or greater during the past twelve months (possible beginning of clinical depression)? 36.3% answered YES or over 1 out of every 3 young people Have you seriously considered suicide in the past twelve months? 19.0% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 5 young people

Have you made a plan to attempt suicide in the past twelve months? 15.6% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 6 young people Have you attempted suicide in the past twelve months? 9.0% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 11 young people The release of these results comes just before the beginning of National Suicide Prevention Month, September. National Suicide Prevention Week is September 6 – 12, with World Suicide Prevention Day on the 10th. During this day, week, and month, organizations and individuals across the state will be conducting activities to draw attention to the terrible tragedy of youth suicide. If you are looking for more information, The Jason Foundation has compiled an Informational Packet for Suicide Prevention Month that may be of use to you. The Packet will provide you with additional information on the tragedy of youth suicide and offer suggestions on how you can become involved in prevention efforts. The Jason Foundation is a nationally recognized leader in suicide awareness and prevention. They provide all their programs, services, and materials to the public at no cost. To download the packet, head to www. jasonfoundation.com and click on Suicide Prevention Month under the How to Get Involved tab. Suicide is preventable. Together, we can make a difference.

IN High Schoolers Can Tutor Younger Students for Credit This new school year, State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) said there are opportunities for high school juniors and seniors to tutor young students in order to fulfill graduation requirements. Aylesworth said students can experience some form of learning loss over summer break, meaning they do not retain some of the lessons they learned the previous school year, but most are typically able to relearn these lessons quickly. However, because students participated in remote- or e-learning due to COVID-19, a recent NWEA report estimates some children could begin the 2020-2021 school year up to nearly a full grade level behind their peers in some subject areas. To help bridge this gap, Aylesworth said schools can implement the Indiana Department of Education’s newly developed Indiana Tutoring Fellowship, which will fulfill the Service-Based Learning Experience under Graduation Pathway Requirement #2. “Schools are finding ways to adapt and support students during the ongoing pandemic,” Aylesworth said. “Making the change from in-person to remote learning can make retaining information harder for

many school children. This program is a unique opportunity for juniors and seniors to tutor younger students that need a little extra help.” To be eligible to participate in this program, Aylesworth said students must be a high school junior or senior, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and be in good behavioral standing. The IDOE recommends tutoring sessions take place virtually, but if students are permitted to meet face-to-face, social distancing must be followed. Tutors will work with students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Aylesworth supported the 2017 law creating Indiana’s graduation pathways, which allows students to pursue opportunities that best meet their education and career goals. To implement a tutoring program, schools can apply for a federal grant through the CARES Act. Applications are due by 4 p.m., Sept. 4, and can be found online at doe. in.gov/grants/title-iv. Visit doe.in.gov/graduation-pathways for more information. State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) represents House District 11, which includes portions of Lake and Porter counties.

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD “But…” This word is an interruption. It signals a dramatic shift, even reversal, in the conversation or story line. Consider the followings statements: “You’re doing a great job around here, but…” “We did everything we could for your father, but…” “I love you, but…” Maybe you’ve been on the receiving end of statements that started this way. You remember the gut-level anxiety you felt when you heard the word “but”. There are good “buts’ too, though – “buts” that signal a positive reversal. “We thought we’d lost him, but…” “We weren’t sure you were up to the task, but…” “I swore I’d never forgive you, but…” The Bible is full of dramatic “but” statements. They proclaim redemptive reversals that God works for his children. Listen! “The man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But

the LORD God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’” (Genesis 3:8b9, ESV). “If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared” (Psalm 130:3–4, NIV84). “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good…” (Genesis 50:20a, ESV). “For one will scarcely die for a righteous person… But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7a,8, ESV). “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:19–20, NIV84). If you haven’t already, ask God to work these redemptive reversals in your life. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Can You Afford the Years Beyond Your Healthspan?

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN We’re all interested in the topic of lifespan. What’s the average lifespan of men and women? What factors influence lifespan? What can I expect for my own lifespan? Yet, you may also want to think about your healthspan – that is, how long you will live in generally good health. How should you factor in your potential healthspan when creating your financial strategies? To begin with, you’ll want to be aware of the gap between lifespan and healthspan. Consider this: The average healthy life expectancy in the U.S. is only 68.5 years, according to World Bank data cited in the 2020 Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. This means that, on average, Americans can expect to spend about 10 years in poor health, which, unfortunately, is more than in most other developed countries. Of course, everyone’s situation is unique, and many variables are involved in the lifespan/healthspan comparison: differences in projected longevity between women and men, family health histories, environmental factors, and so on. And there are certainly plenty of people whose healthspans essentially match their lifespans – that is, they enjoy healthy, busy lives right up until the end. Yet, even the possibility that you could face a decade or more of less-than-ideal health in your retirement years should be cause for concern. The health issue, by itself, is already worrisome, but the accompanying threat to financial independence is also on people’s minds. In fact, 72% of retirees say one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to the Four Pillars study. So, given these concerns, here are a few moves to consider, possibly with the help of a financial professional: Investigate long-term care protection.

The costs of an extended nursing home stay can be exorbitant, and the services of a home health care aide are far from inexpensive, too. And retirees know it: Their greatest financial worry is paying for health care costs, including the cost of long-term care, again according to the Four Pillars study. Consequently, you may want to explore some type of long-term care protection – and the younger you are when you purchase this protection, the more affordable it tends to be. Evaluate your investment mix. Even with Medicare and Medicare supplement plans, you will likely face significant outof-pocket health care costs during your retirement years. To help pay these bills, you will need sufficient liquidity in your financial accounts. So, you may need to evaluate, and possibly adjust, your investment mix to make sure you’ve got adequate funds in liquid, low-risk vehicles. These types of securities won’t offer much in terms of growth potential, but they do provide more stability of principal. You won’t want to abandon all growth-oriented vehicles, though – even in retirement, you need to stay ahead of inflation. Create a sustainable withdrawal rate. To help address your healthspan funding concerns, you’ll also need to ensure you’re not taking out too much money from your investment portfolio each year, especially during your first few years of retirement. If you could see into the future, you’d know exactly where your lifespan intersected with your healthspan. But since this certainty is unattainable, you’ll want to be prepared for whatever comes your way. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Patrick Zamkin 18735 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL 60430 (708) 7989066.

Question: We are so confused about which type of counter top we should get. What do you say about our various options with Granite, Marble and Quartz? Answer: Quartz, Granite and Marble are three of the best and most popular countertop options on the market. Granite countertops have risen to popularity over the past few decades, while marble countertops have been a focal point of homes for years on end. And then there are quartz countertops, which have also risen in popularity in recent years as a viable alternative to both granite and marble options. But how do these three countertop materials compare to each other? Granite countertops are some of the most beautiful and tough surfaces you can find. You will have a seemingly endless array of colors and styles to choose from when it comes to this amazing natural stone. Granite is very durable. Marble is truly a timeless classic when it comes to building materials. This is evidenced by the fact that the natural stone has been used to build everything from some of the world’s most famous statues to kitchen and bathroom countertops. Many homeowners simply feel that there is no material as beautiful as marble. With numerous colors and styles available, many of which include elegant veining, it is

surely hard to match the beauty of marble countertops. Quartz countertops are engineered surfaces that are made from a combination of roughly 90 percent ground natural quartz and about 10 percent polyresin. These specific percentages can slightly differ based on brands but will always be in the same area. Each has its plusses and minuses: Granite ($35-75/sq ft) is naturally beautiful and durable: it’s heat, scratch and stain resistant...but—it requires yearly sealing. Marble ($40-$100/sq ft): has timeless appeal in a variety of colors and styles... but—needs frequent maintenance; acidic substances or harsh cleaners can damage the surface. Quartz ($50-$120/sq ft) has a beautiful look, it’s durable and non-porous, and has many color and style options...but—it cannot handle high levels of heat. By comparing options, you can decide what will work best in your home. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home?
