New Chimney Swift Tower at Mildred Burt Nature Center: New Home for Birds JOSH BOOTSMA The Mildred Burt Nature Center has seen many improvements in recent years, the most recent of which is a chimney-like tower designed to house a special type of bird called the Chimney Swift. Chimney Swifts have long made Lansing their home during the summer months, and have gained a following of amateur ornithologists in the community. The new tower is hoped to provide a reliable home for the migratory birds for years to come. Chimney Swifts in Lansing 101

located north of the Eisenhower Center. After being overgrown for years, the Lan-Oak Park Board approved a clean-up plan for the area in 2016, and the grounds have improved every year since. Last year, the Lansing Garden Club planted hundreds of pollinator plants in the Mildred Burt Nature Center. They planted hundreds more this year in an effort to continue drawing bees, beetles, butterflies, and some types of birds to the area. A Chimney forSwifts

Chimney Swifts are a migratory bird species that make their home in Peru. However, in Peru’s winter, the birds fly north to the Midwest in mid-April where they make nests, lay eggs, and raise their young to be strong enough to fly south back to Peru come October. The birds are unique in that their feet are designed to perch not on horizontal surfaces, but on vertical ones. The birds would originally roost in hollowed-out trees but as man-made chimneys became more prevalent and remained unused during Midwest summers, the birds began calling these their home, and were given their name for doing so. The species’s population has been in decline in recent years For decades, Coolidge Elementary School played home to Lansing’s largest colony of Chimney Swifts. The birds’ evening routine of flying around and then entering the school’s chimney sometimes drew a crowd of spectators on pleasant evenings. The group called themselves “The Swifties.” When demolition work was needed at the school in the summer of 2018, Lansing resident Julie Blackwood started an online petition for the District 158 School Board to find an alternative way for work to be continued on Coolidge without the birds’ home being destroyed. The petition received nearly 1,300 signatures. Ultimately, the District 158 Board chose to create a temporary tower to house the birds so the work on Coolidge could continue. The swift colony’s original home was the large brick chimney seen to the left. Two temporary chimneys were installed on the new building. In the summer of 2019 and this summer, the birds have found their homes in other places throughout the area, including at St. Anne’s School and Cornerstone Church. The Lansing Garden Club is responsible for the recent improvements at the Mildred Burt Nature Center. The club was started in early 2019 by Lansing resident Diane Lund. Lund said shortly after she started the Garden Club she came before the Lan-Oak Park Board and pitched a three-year plan of improvements to the Mildred Burt Nature Center. The Board responded positively and asked if she could complete the project even quicker. The Mildred Burt Nature Center is a 30,000 square foot area

The new Chimney Swift tower is 15 feet tall and built with special siding to allow the birds to roost on the inside. Information about the birds will be placed on the kiosk surrounding the tower. Lund became aware of the Chimney Swift issues in 2018, and added a Chimney Swift tower to her ideas for transforming the Mildred Burt Nature Center. Though she wanted to have the tower up by mid-April to house the birds this summer, COVID derailed those plans. Now, however, the 15-foot tower is up and ready to host Chimney Swifts. Lund said that although the tower won’t be a summer home for swifts this year, some might use the tower as a temporary shelter as they begin their journey south to Peru. Lund said that someone on Facebook had indicated they had already seen a few swifts already using the tower. Created by Lund’s husband Rich, the tower is built with special siding on the inside, which has grooves in it. The tower was assembled in such a way to allow the grooves to run horizontally and provide the perfect spot for the Chimney Swifts’s special feet to perch. The tower is insulated to help keep the temperature bearable for the birds in the hot summer months. Lund and her husband Rich used a book titled Chimney Swift Towers to guide their construction of the tower. Around the base of the tower is a kiosk that will be fitted with information about Chimney Swifts. The kiosk was also built by Rich Lund and has shingles on its top. Lund said that roofs and roof-like structures tend to attract the birds, and she hopes the Eisenhower Center and nearby Buford Walker Senior Housing will help in this regard. The trees above the current tower were trimmed to allow for the birds to circle around the tower before diving into it. When asked how the swifts would find the new tower next year, Lund said, “I am told, ‘build it, and they will come.’

Illinois Approved for Added $300 Unemployment Benefit CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS Illinois is one of the last states to apply and be approved for a federal program providing an additional $300 in unemployment assistance per week to qualifying residents. Gov. JB Pritzker announced Monday he instructed the Illinois Department of Employment Security to submit an application “despite serious concerns about the unfairness” of the program. The Federal Emergency Management Agency certified that request on Tuesday. Funding for the Lost Wage Assistance Program was redirected by President Donald Trump from the agency’s disaster relief fund. That money is typically used to finance the federal government’s response to major domestic disasters, such as assisting hurricane survivors. Trump issued the order in July shortly after a measure creating $600 in added weekly benefits through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, Or CARES, Act expired. Up to $44 billion is available to states through Dec. 27, or until the funding runs out. Benefits can be retroactively paid to eligible Illinoisans, starting with the week ending Aug. 1. The governor’s office, in a news release, estimated that funding will be exhausted in three weeks. It cited unspecified “economic projections for the demand of these funds.” Only those Americans who are eligible for at least $100 per week in unemployment benefits qualify for the extra $300 in federal funding. That is why Pritzker said Illinois did not apply for the program sooner — about 55,000 residents will be excluded, according to his office. As of Wednesday, 45 states are approved to receive grants, including Illinois, which was the 44th state approved. Applications were accepted beginning Aug. 15 and the federal government has begun paying out benefits. “President Trump’s program will likely cut off the most vulnerable workers, create needless competition among the states for these limited FEMA dollars, and sow more confusion among the unemployed, so I want to caution that those eligible for these dollars will likely encounter frustration and unfairness brought on by the president’s short-sighted and short lived program,” Pritzker said in a written statement. “However, the $300 benefit will provide much needed assistance for those who can

get it, too many of whom are facing terrible choices about whether to pay their rent, buy groceries or get medicine,” he continued. “We will do everything in our power to make sure that every eligible recipient can participate in this program.” Other states developed a work-around to tackle the issue of residents not otherwise qualifying for the extra federal financial assistance. New Hampshire, for example, is supplementing its residents’ unemployment benefits to ensure everyone reaches the $100 threshold. According to the New Hampshire Employment Security Department, “for those people eligible for less than $100 in weekly unemployment benefits, New Hampshire is making additional changes to increase the minimum state unemployment benefit up to $100 so that all unemployed Granite Staters will be eligible.” In Rhode Island, Scott Jensen, the state’s Department of Labor and Training director, said officials will briefly increase residents’ benefits so they qualify for the Lost Wage Assistance program. Spokespeople for Pritzker and the Department of Employment Security did not respond to questions about whether a similar strategy was considered in Illinois. IDES is tasked with distributing whatever federal funds Illinois is allocated and identifying which residents qualify for that assistance. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 24,116 Illinoisans filed new unemployment claims for the week ending Aug. 29. That is down 2,146 new claims filed the week prior. The number of those residents receiving continuing unemployment benefits also decreased by more than 35,000, from 593,305 the week ending Aug. 15 to 555,582 the week after. The number of Illinoisans who filed Pandemic Unemployment Assistance claims slightly increased from 4,169 the week ending Aug. 22 to 4,433the week ending Aug. 29. The PUA program was designed for those who are self-employed and independent contractors who typically do not qualify for unemployment benefits. CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS The Lung Association launched a public awareness campaign to inform parents and adult leaders about e-cigarette facts and trends as well as strategies for speaking with students about why they should not use such products. A guide is available at https://www.lung.org/ quit-smoking/helping-teens-quit/talk-aboutvaping/conversation-guide. Officials also announced a Vape-Free Schools initiative “to help school administrators and educators address the surge of youth vaping through guidance in implementing a comprehensive tobacco use policy,” according to the association. Instead of suspension, it suggests educators develop a substitute discipline policy and offer a tobacco cessation program. Education, community advocacy and research are the main pillars of the Association’s strategy and are methods used by tobacco opponents to curb traditional cigarette use among the age group. “As the school year resumes, more students may experience social pressure to vape, while others may begin to vape in response to stress, including stress related to COVID-19,” Kristina Hamilton, the American Lung Association’s advocacy director, said in a written statement. “We’re already facing what the surgeon general refers to as a ‘youth vaping epidemic.’” A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey found half of youth in the U.S. used an e-cigarette, vape pen or hookah in 2019. That trend of increasing electronic

tobacco use is on par with Illinois high school student usage. Approximately 8,000 students begin using a vape pen every day, the CDC found, resulting in more than one in four high schoolers and one in 10 middle schoolers vaping at least once per month. “Our communities need support, and... the American Lung Association is proud to offer Illinois schools, parents and students proven approaches to end youth vaping in our communities and state,” Hamilton said in a written statement. The advocacy group also said it plans to promote legislation to include electronic tobacco products in the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which bans smoking in virtually all public places. State Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat from Lake Forest, said she will introduce a measure in the 2021 legislative session to encourage youth to avoid e-tobacco products. “While the implementation of Tobacco 21 was a major step forward in limiting the availability to tobacco products to children,” she said in a written statement, “there must be more education about the negative effects of e-cigarettes, so kids don’t seek to get these products in illegal ways.” Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service covering state government and distributed to more than 400 newspapers statewide. Financial Advice Column
Plan Ahead for Generational Generosity SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN When you retire, can you afford to help your loved ones? This issue is certainly on the minds of many retirees. Consider this: Seven in 10 retirees say they are willing to offer financial support to their families, even if it could jeopardize their own financial future, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. However, the same study found that 72% of retirees also say one of their biggest fears is “becoming a burden on their families.” How can you reconcile wanting to be generous to your children and grandchildren with the fear of becoming a drain on these same family members? You’ll have to plan carefully. Ask yourself some key questions, including these: How much will I need in retirement? When you retire, some of your expenses, such as those associated with your career, will go down. And you might also downsize your living arrangements, resulting in lower costs. Other expenses, though, will go up. A healthy 65-year-old couple who retired in 2019 will need nearly $390,000 just to pay for health care, according to HealthView Services, which produces health-care cost projection software. Think about all your projected costs and try to create an annual budget for your retirement years. What sources of income can I rely on? During your retirement years, you’ll likely have several streams of available income, including Social Security, your 401(k) and IRA, other investments and possibly even some earned income, if you choose to work part time. You’ll want to know about how much money you can count on from these sources each year. How much can I afford to give away? Once
you know about how much your expenses and income will be during your retirement years, you’ll have a clear idea of how much you can afford to give away to your grown children and grandchildren. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should contribute the entire difference between your expenses and income – you’ll always want to have a cushion. But at least you’ll know what your limits are. On a technical note, you can give up to $15,000 per person, per year, to as many people as you’d like without incurring gift taxes. And you don’t have to give just cash, either – you could contribute to a college funding vehicle, such as a 529 plan. How can I protect my financial independence? Other than not spending or giving away more money than you’re taking in, you can certainly take other steps to keep your financial independence and avoid becoming a burden to your family members. For one thing, you can protect yourself from the heavy costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can help you choose an appropriate protection strategy. Also, you can guard your interests, and those of your family, by creating a power of attorney, health care directive and other appropriate legal arrangements (with the help of an attorney). Your best impulses – to be generous to your loved ones while staying financially stable enough to avoid becoming a burden to them – don’t have to be mutually exclusive. With careful planning, you can help make both goals a reality. Mom On Money
Make your money habits work for you! NANCY ZEKVELD Habits. We all have them. One of my habits is to get up early to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee in the morning. Another is that I don’t always leave myself enough time and get stressed out and impatient with others. Did you know that 40% of the things we do each day are out of habit? Things as simple as brushing our teeth, grabbing coffee in the morning, even our route to work! Our brain is an amazing thing; it organizes what we do into patterns so we can save energy. Unfortunately, our brain does this with both our good and our bad habits. Much of how we deal with our money comes down to habits, both good and bad. It may be that you walk past the coffee shop every morning on the way to work and find yourself slipping in to grab coffee and a donut—and the cost is rising. Maybe you find yourself bored at night and browse eBay or Amazon, purchasing things you don’t need. Soon you find yourself behind on your finances or not achieving financial goals. If we know how habits work, we can break the bad ones. Habits are a loop: Trigger - What causes the behavior, i.e. walking past the coffee shop. Routine - A repeating behavior, i.e. popping in to buy the coffee, and maybe a donut. Reward - An enjoyable benefit, i.e. caffeine
or chocolate high. Identifying triggers and changing routines can break these habits. Maybe take a new route to work that avoids the coffee shop, or pick up a book or call a friend when you sit down in the evening, rather than browsing shopping sites. Use this knowledge to form good money habits! Planning one grocery trip a week cuts down on the extras we buy in multiple trips. Controlling your spending and achieving savings goals is a reward itself. One of the best ways to build new habits is to build a financial budget. Let’s get to work building good habits! If you are struggling and falling behind, worried about money, or debt is out of control, please use the information below to get in touch with me for a free budgeting service and professional credit counseling—or even a listening ear. Nancy is Center Manager for the CAP Debt Help Center, helping people in debt in the South Suburbs of Chicago. She has received CAP training and comprehensive money management training by AFCPE. If you’re struggling to pay bills, feel overwhelmed with any debt, including medical or student loans, reach out for free local credit counseling service. 708-866-5577. Nancy is wife to South Holland Pastor Richard and mom to Anton, Annika, Autumn, Augustin and Adamina.

The Illinois Department of Transportation today renewed its call for qualified individuals to step forward and apply for seasonal positions to help with snow and ice removal across the state. Through the department’s annual “snowbird” program, temporary snowplow drivers are hired every year on a full-time and on-call basis. IDOT plows more than 45,000 lane miles statewide during the winter season. “The calendar says September, but snow and ice season will be upon us before we know it, as well as a great opportunity to help serve the public,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “The snowbird program provides a vital service, but also opens the door to earn some extra income and possibly a lifelong career with IDOT.” In some instances, participants in the program have become full-time employees.

MIKE BUDER Your emotional attachment to your house can cost you big $$$. Our homes are very personal to us. Thinking of my grandmother’s home brings warm, happy feelings, as does my childhood home. And when I move the next time, I’m sure I’ll be emotionally attached to my current home…it’s the first home my wife and I have together, the one where my children learned to walk, talk and write on the walls with permanent markers. But when it comes time to sell, you have to move outside the feelings of your “home” and sell your “house.” I recently had an experience with a transaction where a divorce was involved and it caused the sellers to literally just walk away from a house that hadn’t been properly cleaned because it was too emotional for either party to do so. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay someone to do a job that you can’t do yourself. I can promise you that if you leave your home clean, then new buyers will appreciate it in their offer in the form of cash in your pocket. Otherwise it will come across in their offer in more ways than one. If buyers believe you lived in the home in that condition, it’s likely they will
believe you neglected to maintain it, as well as clean it. And of course there is the other extreme: the house is so completely your family’s home, that buyers cannot even imagine their family “intruding” into your space. You know the one—with the children’s art on the refrigerator, the one with two-dozen family photos in the living room, the one with “Madison’s Room” painted on the bedroom wall, the one with no space at all for a new family. When you get ready to market your home, it should be a house ready for a new family to picture as their own. Pack away those personal items, photos and “collections” and paint the rooms with warm, neutral colors. You live in a home, but you sell a house. You have to detach emotionally from your home and view it as a house when you get ready to put it on the market. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. JOSH BOOTSMA You may have heard of the three “omni” words to describe God: omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. All describe God and his character in unique ways. Today’s word is omnipotence. Omnipotence means that God has the power in Himself, without need of help from any other, to control everything in the world he has created. Jeremiah 32:17 says, “Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.” It’s important to note here, that although God is all powerful, he is also a God that is true to Himself. God cannot sin, because that would be contrary to His nature. He is perfectly holy and righteous and his omnipotence will never compromise those attributes. Omnipotence means God is in control. There’s not a flower petal that falls to the ground without God’s having made it so. In the book of Genesis, God creates the world

out of nothing. He exercises his infinite power by doing so. But he doesn’t just create the world and sit back and watch things unfold. He is intimately involved in every aspect of our world—even our actions, words, and thoughts. God’s omnipotence should give us joy—especially when we think of our own sinfulness. Each one of us has made terrible mistakes in our lives. But the power of God is greater than even the power of our sin. His perfect control of the world means that He can also soften our hearts and allow us to run to him and His Son Jesus Christ in repentance. The hymn “What Tho’ I Cannot Break My Chain” says this beautifully: “Thou can overcome this heart of mine, thou wilt victorious prove, for everlasting strength is thine, and everlasting love.” Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My wife and I are selling our home, and now my wife has changed her mind about moving. We have a signed sales contract, with earnest money, between us and the buyer. Is there any way to back out of the sale? Answer: To start, sales agreements can fall through due to reasons of financing, condition, title, etc., so the deal could still fall through. However, if the buyer has a valid purchase agreement accepted by both you and your wife, and it sounds like they do, then you are expected to work in good faith to fulfill your end of the agreement. It may be that the buyer would accept a cash buyout to discontinue the purchase. However, you need to consider that the Brokers involved have found a ready, willing, and able buyer and are likely to be entitled to a commission for their work. If you simply refuse to complete the transaction, then the buyers may sue for damages as well as “specific performance,”
a requirement to complete the sale. We suggest that you speak to an attorney. Question: I recently sold my home. The buyers have applied for a loan, but the Broker refuses to give me a copy of the appraisal. As the seller, shouldn’t I get a copy? Answer: No. The appraisal was ordered by the lender and paid for by the borrowers. As long as the loan is approved, it’s none of your business. However, if the appraisal comes in below the sales price and the purchaser asks you for a price reduction, you would then be on good grounds to ask for a copy. Sky Watching this Month: Autumnal Equinox The September equinox (or Southward equinox) is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading southward. Due to differences between the calendar year and the tropical year, the September equinox can occur from year-to year at any time between September 21 and 24. Date and time of the September equinox[4] that occur from the year 20204 to 2024 (UT) are listed as follows: 2020-09-22 13:30 2021-09-22 19:21 2022-09-23 01:03 2023-09-23 06:49 2024-09-22 12:43 At the equinox, the Sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west. However, because of refraction it will usually appear slightly above the horizon at the moment when its “true” middle is rising or setting. For viewers at the north or south poles, it moves virtually horizontally on or above the horizon, not obviously rising or setting apart from the movement in “declination” (and hence
Our Solar System’s Kuiper Belt
altitude) of a little under a half (0.39) degree per day. The equinox may be taken to mark the end of summer and the beginning of autumn (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere, while marking the end of winter and the start of spring (vernal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere. Because constellations change over time, the solar point (the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator southwards) moves over the centuries. Though it is called the First Point of Libra, this point is no longer in the constellation Libra, but rather in Virgo. It passed from Libra and into Virgo in the year 729 and will enter the constellation Leo in the year 2439. For observers in either hemisphere not at the poles, the Sun rises and sets more and more to the south during the 3 months following the September equinox. This period is the second half of a 6-month long southerly movement, beginning with the summer solstice when the Sun rises and sets at its most northern point. —Content from Wikipedia
Special Days in September Yup, you gessed it, September 9 is Teddy Bear day. Nowadays, seems every day has some kind of special (or wacky) designation. In fact, some have several designations. Though some are obviously appropriate, many raise a question or two. Like... Who thought of that? Why? When? Next time you’re bored (and who isn’t with so many of our favorite diversions closed due to the coronavirus), look up some of these special days and find out how they came to be. Here are the special days for the next seven days... September 9: Teddy Bear Day September 10: Sewing Machine Day, Swap

The Kuiper belt (say Kye-per), occasionally called the Edgeworth–Kuiper belt, is a circumstellar disc in the outer Solar System, extending from the orbit of Neptune (at 30 AU*) to approximately 50 AU from the Sun. It is similar to the asteroid belt, but is far larger—20 times as wide and 20–200 times as massive. Like the asteroid belt, it consists mainly of small bodies or remnants from when the Solar System formed. While many asteroids are composed primarily of rock and metal, most Kuiper belt objects are composed largely of frozen volatiles (termed “ices”), such as methane, ammonia and water. The Kuiper belt is home to three officially recognized dwarf planets: Pluto, Haumea and Makemake. Some of the Solar System’s moons, such as Neptune’s Triton and Saturn’s Phoebe, may have originated in the region. The Kuiper belt was named after DutchAmerican astronomer Gerard Kuiper, though he did not predict its existence. In 1992, minor planet Albion (15760) was discovered. It was the first Kuiper belt object (known as a KBO) discovered since Pluto and Charon. Since its discovery, the number of known KBOs has increased to thousands, and more than 100,000 KBOs over 100 km (62 miles) in diameter are thought to exist. The Kuiper belt was initially thought to be the main repository for periodic comets— those with orbits lasting less than 200 years. Studies since the mid-1990s have shown that the belt is dynamically stable and that comets’ true place of origin is the scattered
disc, a dynamically active zone created by the outward motion of Neptune 4.5 billion years ago; scattered disc objects, such as Eris, have extremely eccentric orbits that take them as far as 100 AU away from the Sun. The Kuiper belt is distinct from the theoretical Oort cloud, which is a thousand times more distant and is mostly spherical. The objects within the Kuiper belt, together with the members of the scattered disc and any potential Hills cloud or Oort cloud objects, are collectively referred to as transNeptunian objects (TNOs). Pluto is the largest and most massive member of the Kuiper belt, and the largest and the second-most-massive known TNO, surpassed only by Eris in the scattered disc. Originally considered a planet, Pluto’s status as part of the Kuiper belt caused it to be reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. It is compositionally similar to many other objects of the Kuiper belt and its orbital period is characteristic of a class of KBOs, known as “plutinos”, that share the same 2:3 resonance with Neptune. The Kuiper belt and Neptune may be thought of as a marker of the extent of the Solar System, alternatives being the heliopause and the distance at which the Sun’s gravitational influence is matched by that of other stars (estimated to be between 50,000 AUs, or about 2 light-years). *Astronomical Unit, a unit of length, roughly the distance from Earth to the Sun. One AU is equal to about 150 million kilometres or 93 million miles. —Content from Wikipedia
