World’s Largest Display Of Lego® Art Headlines A Year Of Fun Experiences At The Museum Of Science And Industry, Chicago The Art of the Brick, a captivating exhibition featuring intriguing works of art made exclusively from one of the most recognizable toys in the world, the LEGO® brick, comes to the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) in February 2022. The critically acclaimed collection of creative and inspiring pieces constructed using only LEGO bricks is created by renowned contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya. The blockbuster exhibit kicks off a slate of experiences coming to the Museum next year. In addition, MSI will be open again on Mondays in 2022. New visitor amenities include upgraded dining options throughout the building. Museum Kitchen opens in March, offering multiple food stations preparing locally sourced healthy options using live-fire, display-kitchen-style cooking and kids’ meals approved by the Partnership for a Healthier America. Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition January 17 – April 17, 2022 The longest-running exhibit of African-American art in the nation—hosted at MSI since 1970—showcases nearly 200 works by professional and student artists. The annual Black Creativity program also features an Innovator Gallery of African-American leaders who are transforming Chicago; educational workshops for students; family events; and the Black Creativity Gala. A special exhibit, Black Creativity: Architecture, explores the impact of Black architects throughout history, from ancient buildings to modern skyscrapers. The Art of the Brick February 10 – September 5, 2022 Designed to inspire ingenuity and creativity, The Art of the Brick is the world’s largest and most elaborate display of LEGO art featuring more than 100 works. The exhibit features original pieces as well as re-imagined versions of some of the world’s most
famous art masterpieces made exclusively from LEGO bricks like Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” Guests can get up-close and in-person with the fan favorite, Yellow, a life-size sculpture of a man ripping his chest open with thousands of yellow LEGO bricks cascading from the cavity. In addition, guests can walk under a 20-foot-long T-Rex dinosaur skeleton made out of bricks and come face-to-face with its giant LEGO skull. Coal Mine and U-505 Submarine tours Beginning in February Two guest favorites reopen to the public after pandemic-related closures. The Coal Mine takes guests down a mineshaft, along the rails and through a true-to-life coal mine with an engaging tour of mining history and innovations. The U-505 On-board Tour is an interactive walk through history, from the cramped quarters to the feel of battle. Boo Fest October Our family-friendly science experiences will get you into the Halloween spirit. Explore specially decorated exhibits, examine the science of Halloween with pumpkin drops and slime, try your hand at eyeball dissection and more. Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light November 17, 2022 – January 2, 2023 The beloved holiday tradition returns for its 80th year celebrating the rich customs of countries and cultures from across the globe. Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light dazzle with a 45-foot Grand Tree surrounded by a forest of over 50 trees and displays decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s diverse communities. Established in 1942, Christmas Around the World began with a single tree to show solidarity with fellow Allied nations during World War II.
CDC Updates and Shortens Recommended Isolation & Quarantine Period for Gen. Pop. Given what we currently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation for the public. People with COVID-19 should isolate for 5 days and if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours), follow that by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others to minimize the risk of infecting people they encounter. The change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. Additionally, CDC is updating the recommended quarantine period for anyone in the general public who is exposed to COVID-19. For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than 2 months after the J&J vaccine) and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days. Alternatively, if a 5-day quarantine is not feasible, it is imperative that an exposed person wear a well-fitting mask at all times when around others for 10 days after exposure. Individuals who have received their booster shot do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure. For all those exposed, best practice would also include a test for SARS-CoV-2 at day 5 after exposure. If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19. Isolation relates to behavior after a confirmed infection. Isolation for 5 days followed by wearing a well-fitting mask will minimize the risk of spreading the virus to others. Quarantine refers to the time following exposure to the virus or close contact with someone known to have COVID-19. Both updates come as the Omicron variant continues to spread throughout the U.S. and reflects the current science on when and for how long a person is maximally infectious. These recommendations do not supersede state, local,
tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, nor do they apply to healthcare workers for whom CDC has updated guidance. Data from South Africa and the United Kingdom demonstrate that vaccine effectiveness against infection for two doses of an mRNA vaccine is approximately 35%. A COVID-19 vaccine booster dose restores vaccine effectiveness against infection to 75%. COVID-19 vaccination decreases the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. CDC strongly encourages COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 5 and older and boosters for everyone 16 and older. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and reduce the impact of COVID-19 on our communities. The following is attributable to CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky: “The Omicron variant is spreading quickly and has the potential to impact all facets We consolidate of our society. CDC’s updated recommendations for isolation All Your Debts and quarantine balance what we Into 1 Low know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided payment by vaccination and booster doses. Secretary of State Departments and Driver Services Facilities to Close from Jan. 3 through Jan. 17 Due to Increase in COVID-19 Cases Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases statewide, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is announcing that all Secretary of State departments will not conduct in-person transactions – including Driver Services facilities – from Jan. 3, 2022, through Jan. 17, 2022. All departments and Driver Services facilities will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 18. White is encouraging the public to visit ilsos.gov for online services. Online transactions will remain open for all departments to conduct office services, including, but not limited to the following: • Renewing a license plate sticker. • Renewing a driver’s license or ID card for those who qualify (individuals may call 217-7851424 to confirm their eligibility or to obtain their PIN). • Obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card. • Obtaining a driver record abstract. • Filing Business Services documents, such as incorporations and annual reports. In addition, the Drivers and Vehicles Services hotline phone number will remain open at 800252-8980. Customers with issues involving administrative hearings may email adminhearings@ ilsos.gov or call 312-793-3722 or 217-782-7065. As a reminder, White has extended all driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to March 31, 2022. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits. “After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to close all Driver Services facilities beginning Jan. 3, 2022, through Jan. 17, 2022, due to the spike in COVID-19 cases,” said White. “The health and safety of employees and the public remains paramount, and face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus. Our goal is to safely reopen all offices and Driver Services facilities on January 18 for face-to-face transactions.” In addition, White greatly expanded remote renewal for driver’s license and ID card holders. Since this fall, White’s office mailed letters to eligible customers with expired driver’s licenses and ID cards requiring them to renew online, by phone or by mail. The office estimates that this helps to eliminate the need for approximately 1 million people to visit a facility. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023. For more information, visit ilsos.gov.

“New Year – New Agent?” MIKE BUDER Meet the new agent…same as the old agent…of course this is a play on “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” What I am addressing here is that many people think changing real estate agents will help a listing that is not getting sold in today’s market. They think one agent is as good as another, so if one doesn’t “perform” then we just move onto the next. Commoditization of the work force seems to be the order of the day – so it is somewhat natural that buyers and sellers would treat real estate agents the same way. Sometimes change can be a good thing. If your agent isn’t doing a good job marketing your home, bringing in a new agent may be the answer. But in other cases, and perhaps more often than not it will make little to no difference in the final outcome. One dirty little secret of real estate is that an agent has a very limited ability to influence the final sale price. Agents can help you get the most that the market will allow…but beyond that they are at the mercy of market forces. The notion that a real estate agent can beat the bushes and pull out the ONE buyer willing to pay and finance a premium for your home because of its special features is stuff of urban legend. Look at it this way: If Ford automobiles were to go down in price by
10%, could a Ford dealer realistically be expected to move their existing inventory for their original price? The answer is plainly no. And although there are no two houses identical, the ability of the agent to defy market forces is simply not there. You actually have to sell your house 3 times. Once the buyer says “yes” the home still has to pass muster with the inspector as well as the bank appraiser. So even if you find a buyer willing to pay $120,000 on a $100,000 value, there are several more “decision makers” in the mix that can kill the deal…and these decision makers are not buying with their hearts-for them it’s all about the bottom line. So unless you find a cash buyer the home will have to pass muster with the bank. The banks will not fund a loan if the home is overpriced. Holding out for that higher price, will get you less in the end. Re-listing with another agent under these conditions will accomplish nothing. VERSE OF THE WEEK
Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety. — Psalm 141:10
Attend the church of your choice.
Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD A Cook County order forbids unvaccinated people from dining in at any coffee shop or restaurant in Cook County. Recently, I began the process of getting vaccinated. Soon I will have my vaccine passport in hand, my ticket to sit in a coffee shop or restaurant. Yet the thought of enjoying a privilege denied to those not vaccinated troubles me. I also feel for businesses broadsided by this mandate. Throughout this pandemic, I have aimed not to use my platforms, personal or professional, to wade into debates about mandates, masks, or vaccines. I’ve respected people’s decisions to vaccinate or not vaccinate. I know and love many on both sides of the ‘to-vax-or-not-to-vax’ debate. Also, the position articulated here is my own, not an official position of my church. My concern with the current county order is neither provax nor anti-vax per se. It is this: when a society, fueled by fear, labels a definable group of people as ‘the problem,’ then marginalizes them, good rarely comes of it. Look at history. County officials may argue that public health concerns warrant this mandate. Certainly, grave threats to public health can warrant serious measures of this kind. It is arbitrary, however, to single out the unvaccinated as a monolithic group and label them a serious threat to public health. Certainly not one that warrants such a mandate. Even if you think not getting vaccinated is as foolish as forty cats headed to a dog show (thanks to a friend for the metaphor!), I hope you can agree that the current Cook County mandate sets a worrisome precedent. As we keep one eye on the cost of Covid, let’s keep the other on the cost of misguided responses to it. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church (cfcsh.org) and a concerned Cook County resident.

Financial Advice Column
What should you know about investment risk? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN When you invest, you incur risk – there’s no avoiding it. But the concept of “risk” may be more expansive than you realized. And by understanding the different types of investment risk and how these risks can be addressed, you can improve your skills as an investor. The most common perception of investment risk is simply the risk of losing money. When you invest in stocks and stock-based vehicles, such as mutual funds, there are no guarantees that your principal – your initial investment amount – will be preserved. Generally speaking, if you hold stocks or mutual funds over a period of years, and even decades, you can reduce the likelihood of sustaining losses that could send your investments’ value to zero. Hopefully, the value of your investments will rise over time. And it’s worth noting that, since the Great Depression, U.S. stocks have averaged 9.59% annual returns, according to Morningstar Direct, an investment research service. However, past performance can’t guarantee future results. In any case, this type of risk is real, and it’s a factor to consider when making your investment decisions. But you can’t avoid all risk by avoiding stocks and putting your money into other types of investments. Consider bonds, for example. When you purchase a bond, you typically receive regular interest payments and you get back your initial investment when the bond matures, provided the issuer doesn’t default. But if interest rates go up and you want to sell your bond before it matures, you’ll have to offer it at a “discount,” because no one will pay the full price for your bond when they can buy new ones at a higher rate. You can help manage this type of interest rate risk by owning a variety of bonds with different maturities. When interest rates
are rising, you can reinvest your shortterm bonds at the new, higher rates. And in a falling-rate environment, you can still benefit from your longer-term bonds, which typically pay higher interest rates. Foreign or international investments also contain specific risks. When you purchase foreign stocks, you’ll find that fluctuations in the value of currencies relative to the U.S. dollar can affect your returns. Also, international investments may carry political risk, since some foreign governments and political systems may change in ways that work against businesses in those countries. To contain these types of risk, you’ll want to maintain an appropriate allocation of international holdings and diversify across regions. Ultimately, your most broad-based defense against all types of risk is to build a diversified portfolio containing U.S. stocks, international stocks, corporate bonds, mutual funds, government securities and other investments. Diversification works because it helps reduce the impact that market volatility can have on your portfolio if you only own one type of asset, such as domestic stocks. (However, diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) And you’ll also want your portfolio to reflect your individual tolerance for risk. By being aware of the different types of risk, and taking steps to mitigate them, you can create a strategy that offers the potential to help you achieve your important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. And by doing so, you’ll avoid the greatest risk of all: not investing for your future. On December 28, 2021, I helped an 83-yearold client from Merrillville, Indiana. She came to our office seeking help. She noticed a false charge on her bank account statement. She had been hacked. She cancelled her old bank account and started a new one right away. She acted quickly and responsibly. Then, she got a letter from Social Security and her Medicare Part D prescription plan insurance company. Social Security could not deposit her monthly check and the Part D company could not get its automatic payment. She phoned Social Security but just got a recording to go online. She does not own a computer and does not go online. Her sister tried to help her but could not find anything on the Social Security website to help with such a situation. Apparently, some government employees or contractors who designed and built the Social Security website didn’t think of everything. I had limited ability to help her. But I knew I could start to help her. The first thing I did was help her complain to her congressman about not being able to reach anyone on the Social Security phone line. When her congressman forwards the complaint to Social Security, they will respond to him much faster than they would respond to a letter from her. Then, I helped her contact her Medicare Part D plan insurance company to arrange for
taking her monthly premium from her new bank account instead of getting a payment from Social Security. The insurance company’s representative was pleasant and professional. But she could not help much. She directed me to the insurance company’s website. It was badly designed and I told her so. Nowhere on the website did it have the form that we needed so that I could print it and help our client. So, I typed a letter to the insurance company to request that the correct form be mailed to our client. When she gets that and brings it to our office, I can help her further. I did all that I was able to do on the day that she visited me for help. All the help that I give our senior citizen clients is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with such problems to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to a different agency that does give this high level of customer service? Ours does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.
NEW FOR 2022 By Elder Phyllis Neuman Brown, Free Spirit Ministerial Worship Center At the beginning of each New Year, we tend to want to make changes in our lives. There is the desire to make things better, get healthier, achieve more, become stable, etc. Many of us vow to make these changes via New Year’s Resolutions, Vision Boards, Commitment Ceremonies, Writing S.M.A.R.T. goals, etc. Unfortunately, most of us will have failed to follow through before the first quarter of the year has ended. This year, I propose to do something new for 2022. God’s Word tells us that God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, so why not start the New Year with God first. Matthew 6:38 NIV states, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteous, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Consider this in 2022; before you create your own plans, seek God first in prayer about your agendas, goals, adventures, relationships, finances, etc. His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit will lead you to the appropriate
path, method or strategy specifically for you. He will guide you on your journey and help you to achieve the result. Start the year with the resolution, the vision and the commitment to put God first and then watch how all the other things, plans, goals and dreams will be added or given to you according to the will of God. Remember, God will be there with you in the beginning (Alpha) and in the end (Omega). As you are preparing to build a new you in 2022, reflect on Deuteronomy 31:8 that states, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Thus with God, you shall be able to achieve like never before. You will have a new focus and a new determination. Even during the most challenging times of your journey, He will be with you. Unlike other times, you will not fail in the first quarter of the year. You will be able to continue until the end. Use this new strategy and watch God equip you to become a remarkable you in 2022!

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: A real estate agent cane to my home recently to evaluate my home and give me an estimate of value. He told me my home needed to be decluttered & made to look sparkling clean. He was a nice person, but I was insulted by his insinuation that my home needed more cleaning. My home may not be updated but my house is clean. Are all you real estate agents this rude? Answer: You called a Realtor for advice and a selling price for your home. So, let’s make sense of what you are saying. You said he was a nice person, so obviously he wasn’t rude. Your home is cluttered & not updated. He told you to declutter & to make your home Sparkling clean for showings and you are upset with his advice? Any good Realtor would give you this advice. Our job is to sell your home for the best possible price, at the least expense to you & in the shortest possible amount of time. By telling you to declutter, your home will look larger, which will help you in obtaining
a higher selling price and it will look nicer and more appealing to a buyer. By making your home sparkling clean, your home will look refreshed & more attractive to buyers. Sparkling clean will make your home look and feel newer, which will make up for some of that updating you chose not to do. All this “rudeness” creates a bigger demand for your home and basic economics dictates that demand increases prices. The alternative would be for him to say your home looks wonderful and it needs nothing. The result would be a home that sits on the market longer and begs for a low offer. My advice would be to listen to your Realtor. He is a professional who works for you and only wants the best for you. Stop being so sensitive and spend your energy decluttering and making your home Sparkling clean. Sounds like excellent, inexpensive & sparkling advice to me.
