Bishop Noll Institute will host an entrance exam for prospective students January 23 at the school, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond.

Bishop Noll Institute is currently enrolling students for fall 2021. Now in its 100th school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education, including the highest graduation rate (99%) of any high school in Lake County over the past six years. In addition, Noll’s Class of 2020 received $8.7 million in college scholarship offers.

Bishop Noll Institute will host an entrance exam for prospective students at 8 a.m. Jan. 23 at the school, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond. This is the first step in the admissions process for all 8th graders who have not taken the entrance exam yet and are interested in attending Bishop Noll.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, seats for this exam are limited. Parents MUST pre-register their child for the exam by downloading and completing Section A of the Transcript and Behavioral Report request form at bishopnoll.org or by contacting Mr. Stur, Director of Admissions, at jstur@bishopnoll. org. In order to be eligible for one of Bishop Noll’s entrance exam scholarships, prospective students must have already taken the test or take it on Jan. 23.

The deadline to register for the entrance exam is Wednesday, Jan. 20. Walk-ins on the day of the exam will not be accepted.

Please be sure to keep in mind the following on the day of the exam: If your child has recently come in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19, is waiting to receive a COVID-19 test result, or is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms on the morning of the exam, PLEASE KEEP HIM/HER HOME. We will reschedule your child’s entrance exam date.

Test takers should arrive by 7:45 a.m. and be dropped off at our Door A (our main entrance).

Test takers will have their temperature checked by a BNI staff member prior to entering the building. If a test taker’s temperature is 100.4 or higher, he/she will be sent home.

Upon entering the building, test takers will drop off their $25 payment, check in at a table outside of the main office and proceed to their testing location.

Test takers must wear a mask in the building at all times (this is required).

Most Miserable Day of the Year Forecast for January 11 After an incredibly challenging 2020, many of us will be looking at 2021 with a sense of cautious optimism, hoping we will finally turn the corner of the pandemic. However, before we try to put the events of the last year in the rear view mirror, we should perhaps mentally prepare ourselves for, at least in terms of the weather, two pretty gloomy months in January and February. Wouldn’t it be useful to be able to prepare if you knew when to expect the most miserable day of the year? After all, forewarned is forearmed (or fore-warmed)!

Well, gather your woolly socks, a cup of hot cocoa and the ultimate rainy-day snack in anticipation for a full day of laying on the couch binge watching your favorite Netflix show…

Ezvid Wiki, a video wiki, software and media company, polled 3,000 of us to find out which month of the year we consider the gloomiest. The good people of Illinois overwhelmingly voted for January as the worst month of the year in the misery index. Some Illinoisans may start off January on an optimistic note - viewing the year ahead as one full of promise. Yet as it progresses and the novelty of Christmas gifts wear off, and new year resolutions are quietly dropped, a more bleak outlook may emerge… Ezvid Wiki then analyzed 36 years of past weather data in order to identify the statistically coldest and wettest day in January, which in The Prairie State falls on January 11th, making it Illinois’ most miserable day of the year!

Different states will experience their most miserable days on separate dates, based on the various climates across the country. For example, East Coast states like New York will have to hold out significantly longer for the inevitably gloomy day to arrive, as they voted February as the most miserable month – a time of the year when spring still feels far away, and the snow has turned from a crisp white to a sludgy brown color.

‘Admittedly, no one wants to be outdoors on such cold, gloomy days,’ says Caroline Eliasson from Ezvid Wiki. ‘Which is why it is the perfect opportunity to book the day off to spend a day in cuddled up in front of the TV. After a challenging 2020, you deserve it!’

The transition to a new year is a natural time for introspection, taking stock of what’s important to us, and making goals for what should be more important to us.

But I think there’s sometimes an underlying belief that a flip of the calendar will make a change of heart or habit easier, when there’s really no reason this would be the case. If you struggle with your eating habits, midnight on New Year’s Eve is not going to magically take away your desire to eat. If you’ve struggled with your anger, there’s nothing about the number 2021 that’s going to help with your self-control.

New Year’s resolutions are valuable because they provide a way for us to think about ourselves and how we’d like to improve. But for Christians, these moments of self-examination are to be happening all the time, and they’re to be rooted in recognition that it’s God who changes us, not ourselves.

Today’s resolutions are so often grounded in nothing deeper than a strong desire to do better. As you’ve probably realized when your own well-intentioned goals have failed, that motivation is not good enough! It’s the Lord who convicts everyone of their shortcomings in the first place, and it is He who has the power, by His Holy Spirit, to bring about change in our lives. God tells us to submit our desires and needs to Him, and He will answer us (Matthew 7:7-11).

So as you make your goals for 2021, don’t rely on your own strength. Rely on the strength of the God who sent His own Son to die for you. If He cares for you enough to save you from your sinful self, surely He delights to help you become more like Himself in 2021 (Romans 8:31-32).

8 Common Mistakes Business Sellers Make All business owners think about selling their business at one time or another. However, for the ones who decide to go forward and sell, there are certain points that need to be addressed if they want to have a successful transaction and get the most money for their business.

After selling over 800 businesses, I decided to list eight common mistakes owners make when selling their business: 1. Trying to sell it yourself. Business owners usually are not objective about their business. Even if you have the financial skills, you’ll have a tendency to overestimate the value. And you are not expected to have the financial skills to be objective in the valuing of your own business. Instead, you are a successful business owner, which is an art in itself. The selling of a business is the combination of both an art and a science, and it is performed by individuals who do this fulltime as their profession. You do what you do best, and let a professional intermediary do what they do best.

There is a reason pro athletes and actors have agents – because they get more money and better terms when they hire someone to negotiate for them. Likewise, you simply

won’t get as much value for your business trying to sell it yourself and learn on the job.

Attempting to sell your own business will devour your time. You know how to run your business, but this is no time to learn how to be an investment banker or business broker.

2. You are too sensitive about your business. You will take comments made by a buyer personally and perhaps kill the deal.

Nobody likes to hear they have an ugly baby, and the same is true when you are selling your business. Any negative comments about your business to you will be taken personally regardless of how hardened you may think you are. The solution is to get an intermediary to soften the blow and translate the buyer’s comments into requests that will not be taken personally.

3. You don’t know how to arrive at fair market value. Owners who are unrealistic about the value of their business are the biggest reason why deals fall through. Get the facts and the reality of what businesses like yours are selling for in the current market, and never believe anything you read in the trade magazines as the gospel regarding valuations.

4. You don’t know how to recognize a qualified buyer. Different businesses require different kinds of buyers, and different buyers will pay different amounts for a business.

You need to know which buyers are paying the most in today’s market, because buyers change with the market.

5. You probably don’t know where to look for the right buyer. Finding the right buyer for your business who will pay top dollar isn’t as easy as running an ad in a trade magazine or newspaper and seeing who contacts you.

As a seller you want to know who really has the money and whether they are serious. Are they cherry pickers or making low-ball offers?

Or do they try to claw back on an offer and use the old bait-and-switch technique? Remember, time is money, and buyers are generally working on your time and your money.

6. You fail to realize that selling a business is a process, not an event. Selling a business involves a structured process that takes time – generally between six to 12 months from conception to closing. It is a very detailed process that not all sellers are up to accomplishing without the guidance from a trained professional who has performed this process many times before.

7. You have to assemble the right team to get the job done. Just as in sports, if a seller doesn’t have the right team of players in the game, he will either get defeated or hurt in some way. What is the right team? An attorney who has experience in business transactions and understands the sale of a business to a buyer and not to one’s lifelong golfing buddy. An accountant who understands the tax system and is not afraid to give good tax advice, knowing there is a possibility they will lose your account and is looking out for your best interest. And an experienced intermediary who has working knowledge of your industry.

8. You aren’t committed to selling. Selling a business is a lot of hard work. People don’t realize how much work it is to assemble all of the data that is needed by a buyer to get a business sold. A lot of transactions will fall apart because the seller is either not committed to the process or does not have the mental stamina to continue. The solution is to get help with a seasoned intermediary who will coach from the beginning to the end and help you to reap the rewards for all of your many hard years of work.

If you’ve been contributing for many years to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan, it may be your largest pool of money.

So, if you are facing a financial need, you may think about tapping into your account. After all, it’s your money – why not use it?

But touching your 401(k) before you retire may not be a good idea, as it can lead to some unwanted consequences.

First, taking funds out of your 401(k) now could increase the risk of running out of money during retirement, which could last for decades.

Also, withdrawals taken from your 401(k) before age 59½ may be taxed as ordinary income and are generally subject to a 10% penalty for early withdrawal, although there are some exceptions. And a sizable taxable withdrawal from your 401(k) could bump you into a higher tax bracket.

Therefore, if you are facing a financial crunch, you may want to explore some options before tapping into your 401(k). For starters, see if you can cut your expenses where possible and explore financial assistance programs that service providers, such as utility companies, might offer.

Also, if you have an emergency fund, now may be the time to use it. For most folks, it’s a good idea to keep three to six months’ worth of living expenses in such a fund, with the money kept in a liquid, lowrisk account. But even smaller amounts can help in a financial crunch.

You might also find another source of cash in your taxable investment accounts.

Another cash-generating option is a 401(k) loan, assuming your plan permits such loans. Unlike a direct withdrawal, a 401(k) loan is not taxable if it’s repaid on time. (If it isn’t, you could also incur penalties.) And, although the loan may have some fees, the interest on it will be paid to your account, rather than to a bank. However, you won’t earn investment returns on the loan balance, because you can’t use this money to invest. And if you leave your job before you’ve fully repaid the loan, you’ll likely have to come up with the remaining balance quickly.

You could also consider using your credit cards to generate cash, but these types of loans or advances can be quite costly.

Instead, you may want to look at other possibilities, such as a home equity loan, the cash value of a life insurance policy, the “margin” on your investment accounts or a personal loan. Senior Organizes Dinner To Fight Human Trafficking WOODROW WILCOX At 6 pm on Friday, January 8, 2021, at the Living Stones Church in Crown Point, the SHARE Group will have its annual fundraising banquet to fight human trafficking.

This year, Heidi Provo will be the featured speaker. She is an educator who works with adolescent mothers and is the mother of a human trafficking survivor. As the national leader of Moms Against Trafficking, she helps to shine a light on the dark and violent world of human trafficking both nationally and internationally.

The SHARE Group was started by Len Reynolds when he was 54. He is now 60.

He was alarmed when he started learning about human trafficking. The difference is

that this senior citizen took action to fight to protect young people.

“I was concerned for all young people but especially for my four granddaughters,” Len Reynolds explained. “I wanted to help avoid such a tragedy for young people by making more people aware of this problem so that they could join forces with others to protect young people from these terrible crimes.”

The Share Group has been able to educate over 3,000 clergy, elected officials, professionals, educators, and laymen on how to be on guard to protect young people from human trafficking. Funds raised by the annual banquet will help The SHARE Group to continue in its efforts to spread awareness to protect young people from becoming slaves of human traffickers.

Dog Lady of Mexico Gives Hope to Thousands Alison Sawyer Current experienced a calling — a powerful pull that she couldn’t ignore — and gave renewed hope to the starving, unwanted cats and dogs roaming Isla Mujeres and set a profound example for others to follow.

The Dog Lady of Mexico shares Alison’s remarkable journey, which began when she and her husband, Jeff, were soaking up the sun on the Mexican island during a much-anticipated month-long honeymoon. The stray animals roaming freely seemed to be woven into the island culture — just another aspect of the backdrop. Until she took a closer look.

First, a tiny, pregnant, toothless cat caught Alison’s attention. Then along came a dog with a litter of 12. The animals were suffering, disease-ridden and without any sources of

Alison’s honeymoon became the catalyst to a lifelong pursuit to save as many neglected cats and dogs as humanly possible. Her first rescue took place in 2001, and before she knew it, she was assisting with the creation of the island’s first spay and neuter clinic.

The Dog Lady of Mexico compellingly and accurately depicts Alison’s story through a character named Rose. Her valiant efforts to help stray dogs and cats eventually grew into the nonprofit Isla Animals, which offers free spays and neuters, low-to-no cost veterinary care, arranges adoptions, and runs owner education to help whittle the number of animals destined for the same bleak existence.
