In Memoriam: SSC mourns “unparalleled” leader Frank M. Zuccarelli South Suburban College (SSC) announces the passing of longtime Board Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli on January 3, 2022 at the age of 70. “All of us at South Suburban College are profoundly saddened by the loss of our beloved leader Frank M. Zuccarelli,” said Dr. Lynette Stokes, SSC President. “On behalf of the college and our Board of Trustees, I extend our deepest condolences to his family and countless friends throughout our community.” Zuccarelli, a South Holland resident, has served as a member of the South Suburban College Board of Trustees since 1978. In 2014, he received a service award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) recognizing his 35 years of service as a community college trustee. During his tenure, Zuccarelli witnessed SSC and the Illinois community college system grow from temporary buildings into the third largest community college system in the United States. He is only the fifth person out of more than 2,200 current and former trustees to reach this level of success in the entire state of Illinois. “Chairman Zuccarelli left an indelible mark on both an institution and a community from his time as SSC Student Trustee through his 43-year tenure of service to our College Board,” Stokes added. “Frank’s tremendous intellect and leadership were instrumental in advancing SSC’s student-centered mission, while creating a collaborative atmosphere among faculty, administration and staff for over four decades. He was a champion for equity and inclusion and breaking down barriers to higher education. His

Stokes concluded, “Frank Zuccarelli positively impacted the lives of thousands of people and his legacy will be felt in the halls of South Suburban College for many, many years to come. He will be dearly missed.” Details regarding arrangements will be made available in the coming days.

Letter from Secretary White: Let’s Honor Dr. King with our Actions Dear Editor: This January 17th, please join me in celebrating the life, influence and contributions of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This will mark the 37th year our country has honored Dr. King’s birthday as a federal holiday and I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect upon how he impacted our society with his philosophy of embracing equality and rejecting bigotry and segregation. Dr. King served as one of my earliest mentors while I was a student at Alabama State College in Montgomery, Alabama in the early 1950s. I attended church in northern Montgomery where Dr. King served as the pastor. I had the privilege of listening and observing him firsthand. In Alabama, I experienced many challenges and frustrations due to segregation. African Americans were not allowed to drink at certain water fountains. We were prohibited from sitting in certain seats on buses and banned from eating at many restaurants.

Following the lead of Dr. King, Rosa Parks and other civil rights leaders, I participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott that ultimately led to the desegregation of the public transit system. This peaceful protest taught me the importance of perseverance and working together toward a common goal. To this day, I remain impacted by Dr. King’s teachings. His values and dignified behavior continue to inspire and resonate with me. I fondly remember Dr. King attending my college basketball games and staying afterward to offer me words of encouragement and support. He made a difference in my life. As I consider the legacy of Dr. King in my life, I also find myself reflecting on my tenure as your Secretary of State. This year will be my 24th and final year as Illinois Secretary of State. I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to serve the people of Illinois for six terms in this capacity. Sixty-three ago, I established the Jesse
White Tumbling Team as a way to give back to the community and to help young people in need of support and guidance. Because of my desire to help others, I became a teacher and a public servant. I cannot imagine that I would have become the first African American elected as Illinois Secretary of State in 1998 without Dr. King’s influence on my life and on society as a whole. On this holiday, let us work to emulate Dr. King’s philosophy through our own lives. Let us commit ourselves to the following: never discriminate or dislike someone because of race, creed or color; learn to love your fellow man and woman; do something good for someone every day; and give back to those less fortunate when you become successful. If we do these things, we honor Dr. King through our actions. Sincerely, Jesse White Illinois Secretary of State

Christians Against Poverty
The Broad Benefits of CAP NANCY ZEKVELD CAP provides free services to those burdened by debt in order to help keep them out of poverty. However, CAP is also an outreach tool, an education and training tool for both those who pass on information about it and those who use its services. As an outreach tool, free debt counseling services help to serve the community by lifting up both the residents of the community and is a specific way in which churches support their community. The overall message is to help those around us and living with us so that no one falls into poverty because others look away or cannot relate to the problems of debt. Some of us are in financial dilemmas because of faulty decisions and some because of circumstances beyond our control. As an education and training tool, if we learn about the CAP services (credit counseling or money management classes whether by going through the process or taking the class) we can pass the information along to those we know may benefit. It helps us to begin teaching those we know about the

concept of stewardship of God’s resources and the benefits of living as stewards. As a person learns about living within their means it may be realistic to incorporate lessons about stewardship and giving back. The lessons do not need to be tied to a specific amount but rather what they can give based on what they are doing to live within their means; it becomes more personal and meaningful. Last, as an evangelistic tool, it is easy to explain how we are all in debt to God. We all carry a debt that we could never repay or get out from under without accepting the work of Jesus. So as we encounter those who may be in different financial scenarios, we can assure them and we can remind ourselves that we are all debtors and this leads us into empathy and compassion for those around us who are in need. Nancy is the South Suburbs CAP Debt Center manager in partnership with Covenant Fellowship Church in South Holland. Wife of Pastor Richard Zekveld and mom to Anton, Annika, Autumn, Augustin, and Adamina. Nancy loves to connect with her community through Christians Against Poverty.

Speaking Of Seniors
Don’t Wait So Long! WOODROW WILCOX On January 6, 2022, I reviewed papers regarding an ambulance bill for a client from Crown Point, Indiana. The ambulance bill was over a year and a half old. Why didn’t the client get the bill to me much earlier? I don’t know. I phoned the client to report on what I had done and what needed to be done, but all I got was a recording asking me to leave a message. Old bills have special problems that cost more time and money to work to solve. Sometimes, the old bills are just impossible to solve because the client waited too long to get help. In this case, the ambulance run of our client was on June 2, 2020. Medicare has deadlines for filing or refiling claims. There are deadlines at Medicare so that if a claim is old, it takes more time to find and retrieve the claim information from the archives of Medicare. So, waiting to ask for help complicates the problems. In this matter, I discovered that Medicare denied the claim as filed by the ambulance company. If Medicare denies a claim, neither Medicare nor the Medicare supplement insurance company will pay on the bill. The ambulance company wants our client to pay $1,628. But I have a great record of finding faults in the way an ambulance company files a claim with Medicare. So, I ordered a copy of Medicare’s report on how the ambulance claim was filed and why it was denied. When our client gets that report, she has to get it to me to review. There is a lot of work to help a senior citizen fight any wrongful bill. But the older the bill is, the more work it takes. If you pass a deadline, there could be nothing to use to get a bad bill fixed. So, if you get a medical bill that you doubt is correct, don’t wait so long to ask for help. The help that I am giving the 89-year-old from Crown Point is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients with such Medicare medical bill problems. It is how we show that we care. If your insurance agent or agency does not provide this high level of customer service, why not switch to this agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

ONE SMALL CHURCH IN THE HANDS OF AN AWESOME GOD--While doing a bit of post holiday cleaning this past week, came across a book written in 2006 by Barbara Sullivan, the wife of the late Dr John Sullivan of South Holland, Il called “GODS GROUND FORCE.” In the mid 1970s the Sullivan’s gathered a few like-minded friends to a weekly prayer group at their South Holland home that ultimately, over the years, evolved into a church organization under the banner of Restoration Ministries, in South Holland. Restoration Ministries has over 30 different programs with 450 volunteers. Their nondenominational church in South Holland is called “Spirit of God Fellowship” and was part of the evolution of Christian ideals which came about by the Sullivan’s devotion to the Almighty. Barb’s book is inspirational as she takes us through her (their) journey as a lukewarm traditional parishioner to a fervent born-again Christian taking her marching orders from the Top-***

AREA MOURNS THE LOSS OF A POPULAR RESIDENT: Marie Powers Kane of Lansing went to her eternal reward on January 5, 2022 after a lingering illness. Marie is pictured here with her husband of 40 years, Jim Kane at a barbeque this past summer. Until recently Marie could be seen in her power scooter up and down the highways and byways (Marie loved the paved alleys in Lansing! Made her sojourns between streets so much safer. Additionally, she got to chat with the neighbors trimming their shrubbery and admiring the latest flowers in bloom) Marie and Jim had a rich and colorful married life that took them camping in their camper during the early years of their marriage (August 6, 1982) to adventuresome places like Lake Waveland and Turkey Run. and animal lovers that they were they took their dogs with them One memorable pooch was a Lab/Newfoundland pooch named ‘Spunky,’ who Jim recalled was a handful but a great companion in the sometimes-isolated settings the Kanes found themselves in. Later on, when Maries health began to wane they had to retire the camping equipment and settle in at home in Lansing where Jim worked for the Lansing Public Works and other venues while Marie took up the front desk at the Lansing cleaners among other local businesses. Marie’s mother Eileen died 2 years ago. She has a sister Nancy Powers. The world was a better place with Marie Kane in it. Marie will be missed by all who knew and loved her. May She Rest In Peace. ***

Needless to say this live wire will be celebrating in some form or fashion all week long. Charlotte also just retired from St Catherine’s in East Chicago so there is a double reason for celebration. Some of the other gals in CATHYS orbit also come into play, Suzie and Roxanne. Illinois records pandemic high of more than 200,000 COVID cases in one week

2022 Seller Resolutions MIKE BUDER
Daily cases of COVID-19 in Illinois have risen to their highest points since the pandemic began. In the past week there were 201,428 new cases, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Friday. (Credit: Illinois Department of Public Health) –––––––––––––––––––––––
The Illinois Department of Public Health said Friday that the state had recorded 201,428 new cases of COVID-19 over the previous week, a 57 percent increase over the previous week, while the weekly number of deaths rose 15 percent, to 444 as the omicron variant of the virus continues to spread. Those cases were confirmed out of more than 1.3 million laboratory tests performed over the previous week, which brought the preliminary statewide case positivity rate to 15.2 percent. Those case counts are the highest of any since the pandemic began, according to IDPH data, although the death rate is well below the pandemic peak of a year ago. On Thursday alone, the state recorded more than 44,000 new cases, the highest single-day case count since the pandemic began. That brings the total number of cases since the pandemic began to just under 2.4 million, including 28,361 deaths. The rising case rate in Illinois has prompted the General Assembly to cancel all of its scheduled session days next week, according to spokespeople for Senate President Don Harmon and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, although committees in both chambers will continue to meet remotely. As of late Thursday night, IDPH reported 7,096 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, including 1,123 patients in intensive care units and 639 on ventilators. Those cases account for 38 percent of all staffed ICU beds available and 11.5 percent of all staffed ventilators. IDPH continues to advise people that vaccines are the strongest defense against the virus. As of Thursday night, more than 19.5 million vaccinations had been administered. Over the past week, 294,687 doses were administered, for an average of 42,098 per day. Currently, 73 percent of the state’s total population has received at least one dose of vaccine, while 64 percent are fully vaccinated and 40 percent have received a booster shot.

At the end of every December, people make all kinds of resolutions for the coming year. Typically, these are things that they want to improve about themselves, ways to make their day to day personal or work life better, or ideas to put them on track for a change. Many times these surface as a result of mistakes made in the past 12 months. However, when it comes to real estate, resolutions don’t necessarily apply as it’s unlikely that you do a real estate transaction each year. Furthermore, you can’t actually resolve to buy your neighbor’s house or sell your $100,000 home for $300,000. Well, you could, but you’d probably be setting yourself up for disappointment right from the start. Some things are simply out of a would-be seller’s control. But as a wouldbe seller, you can learn from and make resolutions based on those who have gone before you. Example, I am sure there are current sellers who are resolved to take the next buyer that makes an offer under their asking price a little bit more seriously. If you plan to sell your home in the near future, here are some helpful resolutions that your might consider…RESOLVE to think of your home as a product. Start cleaning out old stuff now. If there are things deep in your closets that you don’t think you’ll use between January and the time you intend to move, consider a storage locker or making space in the garage. Does your real estate
agent suggest that the basement needs a paint job? Get some painting bids now. Have you always hated how the bathroom vanity takes up so much space? Consider changing it now so buyers will perceive your bathroom as bigger. This will also help you spread out the costs of home repairs and changes over several months. RESOLVE to understand your timing and exit strategy. One of the biggest stresses on a seller is trying to plan a purchase and sale at the same time. Can you afford to close on the new home before selling? If so, for how long? Do you need to sell the property first? If so, will the potential sale price support a home purchase in the neighborhood you want to be in? If not, what other areas should you be looking in? Selling and buying at the same time brings up all kinds of financial, emotional and physical stress. It’s a lot to think about and plan for, engaging a good Realtor now will help you to have a strategy in place well before you have to take action. Happy New Year and may God bless you and your family in 2022. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your comments are always welcome. Watch Out for Tax Scammers SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Sadly, identity theft happens throughout the year – but some identity thieves are particularly active during tax-filing season. How can you protect yourself? One of the most important moves you can make is to be suspicious of requests by people or entities claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. You may receive phone calls, texts and emails, but these types of communication are often just “phishing” scams with one goal in mind: to capture your personal information. These phishers can be quite clever, sending emails that appear to contain the IRS logo or making calls that may even seem to be coming from the IRS. Don’t open any links or attachments to the emails and don’t answer the calls – and don’t be alarmed if the caller leaves a vaguely threatening voicemail, either asking for personal information, such as your Social Security number, or informing you of some debts you supposedly owe to the IRS that must be taken care of “immediately.” In reality, the IRS will not initiate contact with you by phone, email, text message or social media to request personal or financial information, or to inquire about issues pertaining to your tax returns. Instead, the agency will first send you a letter. And if you’re unsure of the legitimacy of such a letter, contact the IRS directly at 800-8291040. Of course, not all scam artists are fake IRS representatives – some will pass themselves off as tax preparers. Fortunately, most tax preparers are honest, but it’s not too hard to find the dishonest ones who might ask you to sign a blank return, promise you a big refund before looking at your records or try to charge a fee based on the percentage of your return. Legitimate tax preparers will make
no grand promises and will explain their fees upfront. Before hiring someone to do your taxes, find out their qualifications. The IRS provides some valuable tips for choosing a reputable tax preparer, but you can also ask your friends and relatives for referrals. Another tax scam to watch out for is the fraudulent tax return – that is, someone filing a return in your name. To do so, a scammer would need your name, birthdate and Social Security number. If you’re already providing two of these pieces of information – your name and birthdate on social media, and you also include your birthplace – you could be making it easier for scam artists to somehow get the third. It’s a good idea to check your privacy settings and limit what you’re sharing publicly. You might also want to use a nickname and omit your last name, birthday and birthplace. Here’s one more defensive measure: File your taxes as soon as you can. Identity thieves often strike early in the tax season, so they can file their bogus returns before their victims. To learn more about tax scams, visit the IRS website (irs.gov) and search for the “Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft.” This document describes some signs of identity theft and provides tips for what to do if you are victimized. It’s unfortunate that identity theft exists, but by taking the proper precautions, you can help insulate yourself from this threat, even when tax season is over.
