PHOTO (BNI Workshop Club Astrology): These 3D zodiac signs were printed in Bishop Noll’s STREAM Lab. A Bishop Noll sophomore found a modern way to express her passion for an ancient practice by designing a 3D printed zodiac sign chart. Nyree Ruiz is a member of the school’s Workshop Club, which began last fall and meets in the new STREAM Lab. Ruiz began working on the chart in September by drawing her vision on paper.

“My inspirations were the zodiac signs themselves because it is so interesting how unique each one is and it’s interesting how they can just sum up a whole person based on a birthday,” she said.

Her chart includes the zodiac symbols, their planets, constellations and names. The pieces are printed using the STREAM Lab’s 3D printer.

Sponsored by engineering teacher Brian Lambie and STEM teacher Mary Albrecht, the Workshop Club benefits students by opening the STREAM Lab for them to create personal projects outside of normal class hours. Students can work on projects from their own imaginations and in their own time.

Ruiz, of Hammond, said once she heard about the club forming, she was immediately excited because she enjoyed using Tinkercad, an online 3D modeling program, as a freshman. She had learned to create the designs but was never able

“I think everyone should try the Workshop Club because it is really fun and it gives you a chance to make imagination come to life. Mr. Lambie and Mrs. Albrecht will help you along the way so there is no worry about needing help either with designing, printing or coming up with ideas.”

The STREAM Lab opened for classes in January 2020 and all in-school freshmen students took Project Lead the Way’s (PLTW) Intro to Engineering class in the lab. In addition, Bishop Noll offers PLTW Computer Science, Principles of Engineering, and Biomedical Science. The lab is also used as a meeting space for other groups such as the Women’s Empowerment Club and yearbook. The lab’s large space and multiple workspaces make it a perfect place for social distancing.

“What I enjoy most about the STREAM Lab is how beautiful it is and how much effort was put into making it look so beautiful. Just being in there inspires me to be creative,” Ruiz said. In addition to the Workshop Club, Ruiz is involved in the Bishop Noll Band and Art Club.

JOSH BOOTSMA If you’re like me, you spent last Wednesday staring at your TV in disgust and horror as insurrectionists entered the U.S. Capitol.

What made me especially sad as I watched the events unfold and read about them afterward was the evidence of how Christianity has been so perverted in our country.

Here’s what reporters and other sources saw last Wednesday: A flag that said “Jesus is my savior” on one side and “and Trump is my president” on the other; multiple flags containing the ichthys, the symbol of a fish used by early Christians; a flag with the message “Make America Godly Again”; Signs saying “Jesus Saves,” “God’s Warriors,” and “God Wins.” A video shows protestors marching to the Capitol singing “How Great is Our God.” And a protestor yelled, “Shout if you love Jesus” to enthusiastic cries, and then “Shout if you love Trump” to even louder cries.

If you’re a Christian, these abuses of our God and Savior’s names should be abhorrent. The idea of a flag depicting the cross on which our Savior died being carried into the Capitol building in the name of violence and insurrection should be nauseating.

Christians can disagree on politics, but not this: the One on the throne of Heaven is far more important than the one who is in the Oval Office. Equating the hoped change one person—Republican or Democrat—will bring to America to the saving power of Jesus Christ is wrong, plain and simple.

Last Wednesday’s events are a testament to the idols our hearts can so easily fall prey to. A Christian heart trusts in the Lord, not the presidency. A Christian heart is sustained by the promise of salvation in Jesus Christ, not by conservative or liberal politics.

If the Christian Church is to obey Jesus’ call to shine the light of God upon the whole world (Matthew 5:14), we must first remove whatever idols—political or otherwise—sit entrenched in our hearts.

and signs in front of his home in Munster.

Meanwhile, the 1200 block of 35th street came alive with police and fire sirens blaring in a tribute to Breu, who served in the 81st Infantry with the US Army from November 1944 to November 1946 in the US, Japan and Philippines. The parade of police and fire engines, the sirens and yard signs were all part of a salute on the part of Chicago Honor Flight for this WWII Veteran and for his service to his country.

Breu is considered an alumni as he did visit DC in 2018, but the organization is revisiting some veterans with signs and sirens. It is hoped that the when the neighbors see the signs they will send the veteran a postcard or letter thanking them for their service. Breu notes that he was “treated like a king” during the Chicago Honor Flight and feels “like a celebrity!”

So far 175 Honor Flight Chicago alumni in Northwest Indiana have received signs so far. The actual Honor Flights have been suspended during the pandemic. Hopefully, that means students may be able to return to in-person instruction soon. We all want things to get back to normal. I long for the days when teachers will not have to teach through a screen, when the lives of parents will not have to be turned upside down, in order to ensure their children aren’t home alone during virtual learning, when the halls of the schools will no longer be bare, and when you can hear more than an echo, when people talk in the hallways, when there is laughter by students, as they talk in the school lunchroom and enjoy the simple and innocent things in life, and when educators know, at the end of each school day, they have educated their students.

Because of the hard work of many, including but not limited to doctors, nurses, scientists, and those that took part in the Covid-19 vaccines trials, we may be able to see children, all across America, board school buses, walk to their respective schools, and later in the day spend time at the dinner table talking about how school went.

As we continue to battle Covid-19, we must remember the impact this is having on our youth and be prepared to help them cope effectively with the trauma they have experienced. The question that needs to be ask is: What will that trauma look like when students return to in-person learning? Moreover, are schools ready to deal with the depression, anxiety, anger, cynicism, despair, the sadness, and even the sense hopelessness that may

befall so many students? Families have been devastated by the impact this insidious virus is having. Heads of households have died, job loss in many families have become normalized, and being evicted is no longer rare. Kids of all ages and ethnicities have had to watch this up close, particularly in Black and Brown communities, which have been disproportionately impacted by Covid-19, by almost every metric, including but not limited to the death rates, which stands nearly three times the rate for both groups, compared to whites.

While our youth are suffering in silence, because the needs of the adults are a priority and beg for immediate consideration, the voices of our future generation will be heard loud and clear when they return to in-person learning. We may see more students having outburst, melt downs, engaging in maladaptive social behavior, and exhibiting aggressive behavior.

Through collaborating with administrative colleagues, and identifying what research shows are best practices, the preparation for this should begin with the following: • Identify students that have experienced death in their immediate family, as a result of Covid-19. Put in place, as research suggest, a Tier 1 intervention, while teaching remotely.

This is where broad support and interventions are put in place for all students. When those students return to in-person learning, elevate it to Tier 2, where specific students are identified.

• Teach resiliency to the students. The American Psychology Association defines resiliency as, “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.” Let students know that their situation does not

define them. With the right mindset, they can persevere.

• Prepare the teachers, and the support staff, with the right knowledgebase to teach resiliency, empathy, and compassion.

• Familiarize the staff with research that focuses on helping teachers work more effectively with students who are dealing with trauma in their personal lives.

• Provide professional development for educators, even remotely, in preparation for students that will return to school in-person, with needs that are unprecedented.

• Build connections with social agencies ahead of time, in preparation for meeting the needs of students and parents.

As the picture indicates, I have seen educators that I work with visit the homes of their students, or meet them at school, during remote learning, to offer words of comfort and drop off gifts to uplift the spirits of the families they service. These educators are forming those essential relationships that will pay dividends when their students return to in-person learning.

Teachers want to help their students and families. They know that without meeting the social and emotional needs of their students, teaching becomes more difficult and at times nearly impossible. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Teachers want to change of the lives of their students for the better. They just need help doing it.

Jerald McNair, Ed. Doctorate., is a school administrator in South Holland School District 151. He writes about mentoring, diversity in education, and bridging the cultural gap in education.

Frey said to keep talent in the specialty produce industry, you have to hook kids when they’re young – so they don’t, say, flee for the big city and never return to the family business.

“Exposure is very important to young people,” she said. “So much of it starts with education and programs to get kids involved with.”

Frey commends her local school district building a greenhouse, providing a path for not just children growing up on a farm but also students who simply live in rural America.

“I remember visiting the greenhouse for the first time, and it was amazing to see the joy and the pride students were taking in

growing plants for their plant sale,” she said.

She said a key to success in the industry is starting early, and that learning finances is just as important as learning how to work the land.

“We want to go out, work with our hands, to build, grow and create,” she said. “We don’t want to be bogged down by spreadsheets and financial statements. But it’s important to understand the business side of things. It doesn’t matter whether you’re living on 40 acres or 40,000 acres.”

The three-day Specialty Crop Conference concludes Friday.

Speaking Of Seniors

A SERIOUS VIOLATION Sarah Frey sees and appreciates the irony when she looks out at her once-small family farm that became a big player in the specialty crops industry.

“This place I’d spent my entire life trying to escape from, in 2020, it became my escape,” said Frey, the founder of Frey Farms in southern Illinois and “Pumpkin Queen of America” in the words of the New York Times.

Frey was the keynote speaker Thursday at the annual Illinois Specialty Crop Conference, put on virtually by the Illinois Specialty Growers Association. She described to the audience how long before the COVID-19 pandemic saw people fleeing the congestion of cities, as a teenager she dreamt of stepping into a high-rise and ascending the elevator to her office.

But before her long-planned exodus, she reflected on years of working the earth with her parents and her four older brothers.

All of 19 years old, she decided to change course and buy the family farm.

“My inspiration to go into business wasn’t the business side of things,” she said. “It was about having a place in the world to build a strong foundation. The sun was setting, and I stood on the ground where I’m talking to all of you today, and I made the decision I would stay and create a life here.”

And what a life it is.

Frey Farms, headquartered in Keenes, has facilities in eight states. Fruits and vegetables grown on its 12,000-plus acres are distributed throughout the country through Frey’s Homegrown label. It employs more than 500 seasonal workers - in addition to her brothers, “They invested a lot of time into my personal development as a child – challenging me to do things I might not have done,” Frey said.

You know, like write a book about her journey. “The Growing Season: How I Built a New Life – and Saved an American Farm,” has been optioned for a series on ABC. “So when we will be able to see your story on TV?” Reghela Scavuzzo, the executive director of Illinois Specialty Growers Association, asked during the session.

“That’s the million-dollar question,” Frey said, laughing before saying more details will be coming soon.

Frey said she got her nickname from the Times because she started out predominantly growing pumpkins – according to her bio, Frey Farms still sells more pumpkins than any other American producer – but that in addition to growing cantaloupe, sweet corn and squash, the company’s biggest crop is watermelon. The team “follows the sun,” she said, every year starting in Florida and making its way to the Midwest.

In 2014, she launched a line of juices through Sarah’s Homegrown Tsamma Watermelon Juice, which now distributes to more than 2,000 retail locations.

A core mission of Frey Farms is to end food waste in the fresh produce industry.

“So when you look at a piece of ugly fruit, what do you do with it?” she said. “You make juice. To me, life is no different. Optimism is the secret to everything, waking up every day and looking for the good.”

The market is ripe for more speciality crop sales, she said.

“Use different forms, long and short, of your company’s story – vignettes and quotes in your social media marketing, a complete version on your website. Humanize; let potential

customers see the people behind the brand and the people your company has helped.”

Emphasize customer service. Buitron notes that some companies that did well during the pandemic did so because they went the extra mile for customers. “Now take that lesson another step,” Buitron says. “People expect good customer service from a small business, which has more at stake and fewer resources than a large company. Customer service is how you hold onto them. Sometimes the customer service that has the most impact is that which provides an unexpected solution. Train your people to think outside the box and make it goal No. 1 to make customers much happier than they were before presenting you with a problem.”

Focus on building and improving your team. “A successful company is built on the strength of its employees,” Buitron says.

How to Respond When Risk Tolerance Is Tested

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN When you begin investing, you’ll generally assess your comfort with risk, as your investment choices will be guided at least partially by your risk tolerance. But once you actually experience the ups and downs of the market, this tolerance could be tested.

Risk tolerance may appear less bothersome in the abstract but seem quite different in reality. For example, you might initially think you wouldn’t be fazed by short-term market downturns, no matter how severe.

However, when the financial markets really decline, as happened when the COVID-19 pandemic struck last March, you might find yourself being more concerned than you thought you would be.

Before you change your investment strategy, it’s important to understand the potential tradeoffs. By limiting your downside risk by investing less aggressively, you may also limit your upside potential. You might need to change your strategy in other ways, such as saving more or working longer. That said, the tradeoff involved in reducing your downside risk may be worth taking, if it helps you cope better with wild market swings, as the best strategy may be one you can stick with through the inevitable ups and downs of the markets.

Because market fluctuations are a normal part of investing, here are some additional suggestions that may help you focus on your long-term strategy.

Look past the immediate event. While the market’s pandemic-driven fall was sudden, its recovery was also fairly quick. Eight months after its March meltdown, the market had regained all the lost ground and reached a new record high. During the midst of what appears to be a real threat to your investment portfolio, it can be difficult to anticipate a more favorable environment. Yet, while past performance can’t guarantee future results, every historical market decline has been followed by a recovery.

Understand that the Dow isn’t your portfolio. When the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the other major market indexes such as the S&P 500 fall precipitously (or shoot up), it makes headlines. But the Dow and the S&P 500 only track the performance of large U.S. companies – and while their performance may be an indication of the U.S. economy, they aren’t going to track the results of your portfolio, which should ideally include a personalized mix of large-company stocks, small-company stocks, international stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments.

Keep your emotions out of your investment moves.

The market will fluctuate constantly – but you should always try keep your emotions in check. Excess exuberance when the market rises, or extreme despondency when the market falls, can lead you to make poor decisions. Specifically, we may buy when we feel good (when the markets are up) and sell when we feel badly (when markets are down). Your heart and your emotions may drive your financial goals – creating a comfortable retirement, sending your kids to college or leaving a legacy for your family – but when you invest for these goals, you should use your head.

Your risk tolerance is a key part of your investment strategy. But by taking the steps described above, you can gain a broader understanding of how risk fits into your overall picture – and a better understanding of yourself as an investor.

Homebuying “To NOT DO List” MIKE BUDER It is important for you, as a homebuyer, to know that the documentation used to support your loan approval can be reverified even until the day of closing. You may be asked for updated pay stubs and bank statements. Most lenders will verify you are still employed within a day of closing your loan. Credit updates are also generally re-pulled just prior to your closing date. As loan approval requirements get tougher and tougher, it is important to remember these lender re-checks. Nothing is worse than going from an approval to a denial only days before your loan closes because of something you could have waited to do and it does happen!

So with that in mind here are some DO NOTS. DO NOT make bank deposits other than regular pay income deposits in the bank accounts you are using to qualify for your purchase. If you need to deposit anything unusual, be sure to discuss with your loan officer the documentation that may be needed. DO NOT bring account balances below the amount used for the loan approval. Your bank accounts will be checked again prior to closing. The lender may require seeing the most recent statement. Generally the lender will ask to verify that your earnest money and appraisal/credit report charges have cleared

your account. DO NOT have returned checks or overdraft protection. The lender considers your financial management ability as part of the loan approval.

Even if you have overdraft protection, take special care to avoid going negative. DO NOT incur additional debt. This is probably the biggest closing killer. A new car, some new furniture for your new home, etc…also mention any debt that has not shown up on your credit report when you apply. DO NOT open new accounts. Any new account, even if you might not charge anything to it, should wait. The inquiry or the new account itself might impact your credit score.

So in summary, if you are in application for a home mortgage….any changes to your finances – income, employment, bank account deposits, new credit, even new credit inquiries – should be discussed with your loan officer before they take place.

Answer: There are many people who are financially affected by this pandemic.

And it is a terrible situation for them.

Thankfully, there is now a light at the end of the tunnel with the new vaccines. But, even if you are a tenant, you have to pay a monthly rent.

One of the greatest benefits of owning your own home is the freedom it can give you. If you live in an apartment, you have to deal with thin walls and noisy neighbors, and the task of keeping your own household relatively noise free. If you own your home, you can do whatever you want with it. You can hang pictures or paint the walls as you please.

Owning a home provides more control over the children than in an apartment complex. In a neighborhood, kids usually play in the yards or go to friend’s house a few doors away. My clients have told me that in an apartment complex they never knew where the kids were. They could be in any of dozens of apartments. In a house you get to know the neighbors and watch out for each other’s kids.

When you first purchase your home, your down payment is your only stake, as you pay down your mortgage, you own more of what may be an increasingly valuable property. This is called equity. Unlike renting where your rent can go up yearly, fixed mortgage payments will stay the same even as the market fluctuates.

Since the days of our country’s Founding Fathers, pride of ownership has been a reflection of the value Americans place on freedom and self-reliance.
