Indiana Philanthropy Alliance announces the first cohort of the John M. Mutz Philanthropic Leadership Institute. Set to convene virtually January 21, 2021, Mutz Institute aims to skill-up professionals serving in board and executive roles at foundations, corporations and social impact organizations across Indiana.

Alzheimer’s Association’s Tips for Inclement Weather Sixty percent of those with Alzheimer’s disease will wander at some point during their diagnosis. This is a significant safety concern for the more than 230,000 people living with Alzheimer’s in Illinois. A person living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia may not remember his or her name or address, and can become disoriented even in familiar places. In cold temperatures and winter weather conditions, wandering can be dangerous – even life-threatening. As weather becomes inclement it is important to keep your loved one with dementia safe by taking simple precautions to prevent wandering.

Alzheimer’s Association’s Tips to Prevent Wandering: · Carry out daily activities: Having a routine can provide structure. Consider creating a daily plan. · Night wandering: Restrict fluids two hours before bedtime and ensure the person has gone to the bathroom just before bed. Also, use night lights throughout the home or facility. · Locks: Place out of sight. Install slide bolts at the top or bottom of doors. · Doors and doorknobs: Camouflage doors by painting them the same colors as the walls. Cover them with removable curtains or screens. Cover knobs with cloth in the color of the door or use childproof knobs. · Monitoring devices: Try devices that signal when a door or window is opened. Place a pressure-sensitive mat at the door or bedside to alert of movement. · Secure trigger items: Some people will not go out without a coat, hat, pocketbook, keys, wallet, etc. Making these items unavailable can prevent wandering.

When weather temperatures plummet and staying indoors is encouraged, planning ahead for your loved one can be crucial for his or her safety. The Alzheimer’s Association can help with activity suggestions, communication and how to identify confusion and the triggers that increase the incidence of wandering.

Planning Ahead: · Keep a list of people for the person with dementia to call when feeling overwhelmed. Have their telephone numbers in one location and easily accessible. · Ask neighbors, friends and family to call if they see the person alone or dressed inappropriately. · Keep a recent, close-up photo and updated medical information on hand to give to police. · Know your neighborhood. Pinpoint dangerous areas near the home, such as bodies of water, open stairwells, dense foliage, tunnels, bus stops and roads with heavy traffic. · Know if the individual is right or left-handed. Wandering generally follows the direction of the dominant hand. · Keep a list of places where the person may wander, like past jobs, former homes, places of worship or a restaurant.

ROMANCE NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE-Despite a ‘little’ pandemic and social and political unrest, a gentleman’s desire to woo his lady love is the stuff of dreams, romance novels and in this case--real life. Pictured here are 26 year old Michael Albano of Lincoln, Illinois and 26 year old Nicole Batzek, also of Lincoln, Il. The couple have been dating for seven years.

They met as meteorologist students at Valapraiso University. Both are now meteorologists with the National Weather Service, a national entity with 120 offices around the country. A study of the weather patterns is decidedly not romantic! Until, that is, Michael decided he wanted a romantic touch to his proposing to Nicole.

So, Michael lined up a florist, (note the heart shaped floral arrangement they are in, long stem red roses and baby’s breath.

He also hired a photographer and picked out a favorite location at Valpo Central Park. Present for the event were the bride to be parents, Richard and Michelle Batzek and the groom to be parents Tom and Deanna Albano, along with family and friends and Nicole’s Grandfather John Talaga. Retirees aren’t always certain what it is they long to do with time, but one day they stop working and find they have a barrelful of it.

“People often are so focused on making sure they are financially ready to retire that they forget to plan for what they want to do in retirement,” says Patti Hart, co-author with her husband, Milledge, of The Resolutionist: Welcome to the Anti-Retirement Movement.

“And they may have more time to fill than they realize. Life expectancy has grown, and retirements that last 20 years, 30 years, or longer aren’t that unusual. So you have to start thinking, what will you do with your time? How do you envision your days playing out?”

For the Harts, the answers to those questions involve the “anti-retirement movement,” where retirement is more than a rocking chair on a front porch or endless hours of golf.

“We did leave our careers, but we would never call ourselves retired,” Milledge Hart says.

“We are busier now than we’ve ever been. The difference is that we are busy doing what brings us joy rather than what advances our careers.”

But the transition isn’t always easy, which is why the Harts recommend finding efficient ways to manage that extra time the post-career years bring.

Patti Hart cautions that time management does not have to mean blocking out every minute.

“For most people, it is just setting goals and priorities, then making sure you plan for how you are going to accomplish them,” she says. “It is being productive with your time.”

To do that, the Harts suggest putting yourself into the mindset you had in your working years, such as: Use a calendar. People in a corporate setting rely on calendars to manage their obligations and retirees can as well. “Too often people just think they will remember that they have yoga on Tuesday and Thursday, and volunteer at the animal shelter on Wednesday,” Patti Hart says.

“But then they add a lunch here or a board meeting there and pretty soon find themselves scurrying from activity to activity.” Checking a calendar each day also let’s people know they may need to pull back if they are overcommitted, or they may need to find activities to add if too many empty hours are going to waste.

Make a to-do list. A to-do list helps ensure nothing gets forgotten. Just be flexible, Milledge Hart says, because the list is a tool to keep you on track, not a ball and chain to imprison you.

“If you’d rather do something else today, feel free to move items to another time or just skip them altogether,” he says. “It’s your list so it’s your call.”

Treat everything like a business appointment. The calendar and the to-do list can be filled with things that would never have made a business person’s schedule – but may now be high priority for you. “You can pencil in 30 minutes for meditation or an hour to begin reading a James Patterson novel,” Patti Hart says. “Maybe you want to block out Friday afternoon to experiment with a new recipe.

What The Biden Presidency Means For Older Americans In his run for the presidency, Joe Biden laid out a “Plan for Older Americans” that reflected the Democratic party philosophy that healthcare and living with dignity after retirement are an inalienable right for all.

The Biden-Harris plan addresses longstanding inequities based on age and income when it comes to accessing quality, affordable healthcare and living in a financially secure retirement. This is critical because seniors are among the most vulnerable population in the United States from both a health and financial perspective.

Some of the key points the plan makes that would improve the lives of older American’s and their families include: Prescription drug costs. As the plan articulates, Medicare should use its considerable bargaining power to reign in the expensive costs of prescription drugs. Bringing down these costs would have an immediate impact on the pocketbooks of seniors across the United States, many of whom struggle to make ends meet. Some are forced to choose between their medicine and food. They often address the high costs of prescription drugs

by rationing care and dosage. They can’t afford their prescriptions and so either delay or avoid needed care, or they try to stretch out their medications to last longer. This practice is not healthy and actually exacerbates the costs of healthcare because their health declines instead of improving, which is ultimately more expensive for themselves and all of us Affordable health insurance. Providing affordable health insurance coverage to millions of Americans has been accomplished through the Affordable Care Act. But there is still work to be done. Biden vows to build on the program as it exists, finding ways to improve it and cover more people. That’s a far better plan than repealing the act and starting over from scratch, as some want to do. Over the last decade the ACA has become embedded into the American healthcare system like Medicare and Medicaid have since the 1960’s.

Social Security and Medicare. The longterm solvency of Social Security and Medicare must be addressed now before it’s too late. The challenge is how to find revenues and cost savings to extend these programs

Coming of Age Story Explores Mortality and Forgiveness The diagnosis of leukemia at age 43 laid bare a brief flirtation with escape for Bill Smith. After all, he had battled depression and suicidal thoughts from a young age; mortality was really nothing new for him to grapple with. To put it bluntly, for Bill Smith, the end had always been in view. But that life-defining moment — that brief descent into darkness — triggered a profound fight for survival.

The Home Stretch, from award-winning author Wayne M. Johnston, features everyman Bill Smith (loosely based on Johnston himself), who, throughout his life, is confronted with extraordinary circumstances. The Home Stretch is a poignant, ultimately inspiring coming of age story that weaves themes of mortality and forgiveness through life-defining moments of reckoning that many adults have to face head-on and learn to overcome.

Wayne M. Johnston taught English, Creative Writing and Publications at La Conner High School for 19 years. Prior to that, for 22 years he worked on tugboats, usually as chief engineer, towing freight barges between Canadian and West Coast American ports. In 2011, he won the Soundings Review First Publication Award for his essay, “Sailing,” and has published other essays locally. For his debut novel, North Fork, he drew from years of experience reading student journals to reproduce the way kids voice serious matters to a trusted adult.

Why Do Great Salespeople Have More Fun? Learning to become a great salesperson, business development officer, or account manager who provides value brings with it an additional, very personal benefit, one that extends beyond increased bonuses and commissions.

What are the day-to-day emotions of an average salesperson?

Do your homework. Understand what’s important to your prospects and clients and align your solutions with what they care about. Provide relevant value in every interaction.

More and more seniors have come to rely on Medicaid to pay for their long-term costs, As a result, it’s imperative that the federal-state partnership that has funded and administered this program for decades continue to provide critical support for our most vulnerable populations. It will be important to offer tax incentives to encourage and reward people who seek private pay solutions such as long-term care insurance, life settlements and reverse mortgages as alternative funding vehicles so they don’t have as much need for Medicaid.

Retirement savings. Creating greater incentives for people to save for the future with tax-advantaged retirement vehicles such as 401(k) accounts is necessary as this has become the 21st Century pension. Biden’s plan argues that the current system provides upper-income families a stronger tax break

for saving than it does lower wage earners At this point, it’s a no-brainer to level this playing field so that lower-income workers and seniors who want to continue working and saving are not at a disadvantage. Every opportunity to encourage saving for the future, no matter how far off or how close, should be provided for all Americans.

There is no one magic bullet to address these issues. Access to healthcare and a dignified retirement comes from a mosaic of programs.

The combination of ACA, Medicare and Medicaid are all necessary to provide the broadest possible healthcare safety net for people at all ages and stages of life. The combination of protecting Social Security, tax-incentives for retirement savings, and programs designed to empower workers at all ages and income levels is how people will have the best shot at a financially secure and dignified retirement.

The Plan for Older Americans lays out a blueprint to get there, but doing so will take a rare mix of vision, political will and cooperation from both sides of the aisle.

Answer. Versions of this column have appeared before. It is still true. And for many, still relevant. Perhaps nowhere is this phenomenon more clearly illustrated than in the case where a seller receives a good offer right away.

The annals of real estate are well stocked with stories of sellers who refused to take a good, but not perfect, first offer, and who then waited a long time before finally accepting something else at a considerably lower price. The Sellers first thought is almost inevitable. “Did we list it too low?” “If someone will offer this much so soon, maybe we should wait a while and see if we can get more.” As an antidote to the ill effects of the “curse of the first offer”, this observation might be kept in mind.

The fact that an offer is received early in the listing period -- even in the first few days -- doesn’t mean that the property has been listed too low.

Today, a good buyer’s agent will have electronically entered a “profile” of his client’s needs and price range into the system.

Then, whenever he logs on to the MLS, he will be notified if a listing has been entered that matches that profile.

We all know that there is typically a bit of a dance in the pricing and negotiating for a property. Sellers, with the concurrence of their agents, will usually list their property for an amount that is both higher than what they believe its value to be and higher than what they would be satisfied to receive. Why? Because they know that buyers almost always want and expect to pay less than the listed price The final point is that potential buyers learn quickly of the existence of an appropriate new listing. Thus, a flurry of activity at the outset of the listing does not necessarily imply a too-low price; rather, it reflects the efficiency of the system. Don’t be greedy, take your good offer and run to the bank with the profits.

Imagine not being able to shout for joy when your wife tells you she is pregnant.

Imagine not being able to verbally comfort her during the difficulties of pregnancy or express the joys of watching an unborn child grow inside her. Imagine not being able to speak during your child’s birth (many dads may already know what that’s like, I suppose). It’s not until Zechariah obeys the Lord and names his child John that his tongue is “loosed.”

We don’t know if the words in Luke 1:68-79 are the first Zechariah spoke after gaining the ability to speak, but they are the first words of Zechariah’s that the Bible shares with us.

Zechariah had not been able to say a single word for months. You’d expect his first recorded words after John’s birth to be thanking and praising God for his newborn son. Instead, Zechariah prophesies first not about John, but Jesus.

Referred to by some as the Benedictus (Latin for praise be), Zechariah’s prophecy

immediately speaks of God’s faithfulness to His people and God’s promise to raise up a “horn” (a symbol of strength and honor) of salvation. In other words, God will raise up a mighty savior: Jesus Christ.

It’s beautiful how Zechariah speaks with such surety about God’s past and future faithfulness, given it was Zechariah’s own doubt only months prior that caused God to make him mute in the first place (v.

18-20). Zechariah’s mouth was closed in doubt of the Lord’s plan, and now, after the birth of John with the birth of Jesus imminent, Zechariah’s mouth is opened in grateful praise to the Lord for His promisekeeping faithfulness.

Pre-Retirees: Plan Now for Health Care Costs SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’re close to retirement, you’ll have several financial issues to consider. But you’ll want to pay attention to one of the most important of these issues: health care costs. How can you prepare yourself for these expenses? First, get an early start on estimating health care costs. More than two-thirds of those planning to retire in the next 10 years say they have no idea what their health and long-term care costs will be in retirement, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. And some people don’t worry much about these costs, which may be considerable, thinking that Medicare will pay for most of them.

While Medicare does cover many medical expenses, it also has its own costs. You probably won’t pay a premium for Part A (inpatient/hospital coverage), since you likely had this cost deducted from your paycheck when you were working. But if you are hospitalized, you’ll have to pay deductibles and coinsurance (the percentage of costs you pay after you’ve paid your deductible). Part B (doctor’s visits) requires a premium, deducted from your Social Security checks, and you must pay an out-of-pocket deductible. After you meet this deductible for the year, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most doctor’s services. And when you enroll in Part D (prescription drug plan), you will likely also have to pay a monthly premium, an annual deductible and coinsurance or copays.

To help pay for the Medicare deductible, coinsurance and copayments, you may want to get supplemental insurance, known as Medigap. Premiums for Medigap vary, depending on the plan you choose.

As an alternative to original Medicare, you could select Medicare Advantage (sometimes called Part C). Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private

companies approved by Medicare, but the benefits and costs vary by plan. These plans generally will incorporate Medicare Parts A and B and will provide additional medical coverage, such as prescription drugs.

When you incorporate all the above, the annual out-of-pocket costs for traditional medical expenses likely will be about $4,500 to $6,500 per year, per person – not insignificant, but certainly a number that can be addressed by careful planning.

But there’s one more expense to keep in mind: long-term care. The average cost of a private room in a nursing home is more than $100,000 per year, according to the insurance company Genworth. And Medicare typically pays few of these expenses.

Clearly, between regular medical costs associated with Medicare or those not covered by it, and costs resulting from the possible need for long-term care, your health care bills can mount. To meet these costs, you need to plan ahead – and take action.

For example, it’s essential that you incorporate health care expenses into your overall financial strategy. You can also work with a financial professional to run some “what-if” analyses to see if your strategy would be derailed by a potential long-term care stay. And the professional you work with may be able to suggest specific protection vehicles that can help you meet the costs of long-term care.

The best time to prepare for your health care costs during retirement is well before you retire. So, if you haven’t already started, now is the time to do so. When it comes to paying for health care, the fewer surprises, the better.

4 Reasons It’s a Good Time To Go Green In 2021 A Gallup survey shows high enthusiasm among Americans for renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and a growing number who think the U.S. should put less emphasis on fossil fuels like oil and coal.

But amid the growing concerns about climate change and experts’ beliefs that fossil fuels are largely responsible, Americans wonder whether transforming to green energy would benefit their budget and the U.S. economy as well as the environment. Steve Melink (www. melinkcorp.com), ForbesBooks author of Fusion Capitalism: A Clean Energy Vision For Conservatives, says yes.

“People make the argument that the fossilfuel energy economy we have has been good to this country,” Melink says. “They like driving the car they have, and they don’t want to change their way of life.

“But there are some serious, well-documented problems with our fossil-fuelcentered economy that we all pay for, and the cost to our health and environment is one we

can simply no longer afford to pay. ‘Business as usual’ has run out of time as a plausible option. The time to upgrade to green is now, for consumers and businesses. And along with saving our planet, it would be great business for this country, because we have all the tools necessary to make it a win-win.”

Melink lays out some economic benefits for U.S. consumers and businesses in transitioning from fossil fuels to green energy: Reduced costs compared to fossil fuels.

“The cost of renewable energy has plummeted to the point where almost every source of green energy is competitive with oil, coal, and gas-fired power plants,” Melink says. “Data trends show that it soon will be no contest, with clean energy easily outdistancing fossil fuels on a simple cost basis.”

Long-term savings with solar panels. While the initial cost of solar panels can be $10,000 or more depending on the size of the house, their main appeal is the ability to save homeowners money on electric bills in the long

run. Some estimates list savings of more than $1,000 per year over a 30-year period. “Photovoltaic cells are the main component that makes up a solar panel, and their best feature is they have no moving parts, thus requiring virtually no maintenance,” Melink says. “Utility rate inflation is an incentive for solar. When you generate your own energy with a rooftop PV system, you’re locking in energy costs at a constant rate. The future of solar, however, will be combined with storage solutions that can provide dependable solar power even when the sun doesn’t shine.”

Geothermal system efficiency. “A geothermal system doesn’t have to work as hard heating and cooling the home because it uses the constant temperature below the earth’s surface,” Melink says. “It requires some electricity to run, but it returns three to five times as much energy as it requires.” Numbers from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that homeowners using geothermal systems may realize savings of 30-70% on heating

High production potential. Melink thinks the U.S. has the capability of becoming a world leader in green energy production – if more of the business community gets on board. “American companies that invest in renewable energy for themselves will also be investing in what could be a major growth industry for the nation,” he says. “But if American businesses wait to embrace renewable energy as consumers, then we lose the chance to make our country a leader on the production side. Other countries will be eager to take over that role.”

“America is behind in the global picture of renewable energy development,” Melink says.

“But the fact is that opportunities to lead this energy boom are, as Rockefeller discovered at the outset of the oil century, particularly grand for Americans.”

5 Things You May Have Missed About Alzheimer’s Research While your eyes were laser-focused on COVID-19 last year – and rightfully so – there were noteworthy developments in Alzheimer’s disease research that you may have missed.

Here are five: The drug pipeline for Alzheimer’s is heating up. You may have heard of aducanumab, the Biogen drug currently being reviewed by the FDA, but there were other Alzheimer’s drugs that made strides this year.

• Suvorexant, a drug that treats insomnia, was approved by the FDA in February for use in people with Alzheimer’s.

• Pimavanserin (Nuplazid), a drug that treats hallucinations and delusions in Alzheimer’s disease, was submitted to the FDA for review in June, with an anticipated decision by spring 2021.

• BAN2401, an anti-amyloid drug by Eisai and Biogen, is being assessed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s in a Phase 3 clinical trial that started in July of this year.

A blood test for Alzhiemer’s is closer than ever. Breakthrough research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2020 in July found that specific markers in the blood may be able to detect changes in the brain 20 years before Alzheimer’s symptoms occur.

Research explored the potential role of vaccines in reducing risk of Alzheimer’s. Data presented at AAIC 2020 found an unexpected benefit of getting flu and pneumonia vaccines: a reduced incidence and risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

A global study examining the long-term effects of COVID-19 on the brain was launched. Scientific leaders, including the Alzheimer’s Association and representatives from more than 25 countries, are working together with technical guidance from the World Health Organization to track the long-term impact of COVID-19 on the brain.

Genetic risk for Alzheimer’s may not mean the same for all races and ethnicities. The APOE-e4 gene variant is the most well-known and strongest genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, but that research has largely been done in people of European descent. New research published in November in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association found that APOE-e4 has a very different effect in Latinx populations, only adding significant risk in those of Cuban backgrounds.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the uncertainty and worry college students annually feel about focusing on the right career and finding their dream job. The job market for young people is down, many schools have switched to remote learning, and many school resources aren’t available.

As a result, some students are concerned that their majors won’t lead to a job in their field, and they’re wondering whether they should change majors or their definition of a dream job. But on the bright side, a changing world gives college students the opportunity to fully explore exciting new options, their potential, and end up on a path better than they previously planned, says Vince Thompson (www.meltatl.com), founder and CEO of the marketing agency MELT and author of Building Brand You: How To Use Your College Experience To Find And Win Your First Job. “Sometimes the path we planned takes a turn, but rather than leading to a dead end, it opens a whole new world to us,” Thompson says. “While this is a challenging time, it is also an exciting time if young people approach it the right way.

path to job stability and career fulfillment is starting their own business. “Sometimes the best fit with your passion is starting your own business, even if it’s on a shoestring and part-time,” Thompson says. “You could take entrepreneurship classes to augment your business, gaining classroom education and making connections at the same time.”

Do your homework. “It may be one of the toughest job markets in decades, but you can find opportunities faster than ever before because of the internet,” Thompson says.

“If you’re thinking of changing career paths, Google everything you can on that career.

Then go after it like someone has assigned you to write a thesis on this new career. And it’s also a big help to look up people in that field on LinkedIn.” Stay motivated, show flexibility. Your dream job might be out of reach right now, but Thompson says it’s vital to shift from the disappointment and discouragement you feel to focus on the opportunities available for working – especially remote working.

“Building a new narrative,” Thompson says, “and producing a brand story about how you turned this time of great challenge into a great opportunity will speak volumes to future employers.”

Develop new skills. “Developing a diverse skill set can expand your appeal to a larger number of employers,” Thompson says.

“Nowadays, you’ve got lots of opportunities to learn online at your own pace, either taking individual courses or enrolling in certificate programs for different trades.”

“The most important thing to remember is that your career is your own,” Thompson says. “It will be a big part of your life, and ideally, it will embody your passion, your best skills, and define your professional success.

The path you take isn’t as important as it is to keep moving down the road toward your preferred destination.”

Six steps to a healthier 2021 As we embark on 2021, New Year’s resolutions for wellness are more important than ever — and staying healthy is at the top of everyone’s minds.

Seeing your dentist regularly for preventive checkups helps to detect problems early.

During an exam, your dentist can identify cavities and gum disease and detect signs of many diseases — including heart disease, diabetes and oral cancer — which have symptoms that appear in the mouth. Early detection and treatment can prevent oral and overall health issues from getting worse.

Set a goal to improve your oral health routine. That includes flossing daily and brushing with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes, twice a day. While most Illinoisans brush twice a day, almost two-thirds (64%) admit to skipping a brushing at least once a month. Staying vigilant with daily brushing and flossing can help to prevent tooth decay, which is nearly 100% preventable but remains one of the most common chronic diseases among children and adults.

Eat a well-balanced diet. Foods packed with lean protein and calcium — such as milk, cheese, chicken, fish and eggs — help to keep your teeth strong. Fruits and vegetables are key to a balanced diet. Choose crunchy

fruits and veggies, such as apples and carrots, to help stimulate saliva and clean your teeth.

Drink more water. Drinking water with fluoride is one of the best things you can do for your teeth. The water cleans your mouth and helps to prevent cavities by washing away leftover food and diluting acids.[4] By choosing water, you avoid the sugar often found in soda, juice and sports drinks. And because every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work properly, drinking water is essential for your overall health.

Reduce and manage stress. Stress and anxiety can take a toll on your mental health and make you more susceptible to oral health problems such as teeth grinding, canker sores, dry mouth and toothaches. Manage stress by staying active, meditating and getting enough sleep.

Avoid tobacco and limit alcoholic beverages. Smoking and using other tobacco products increase your risk of lung cancer, gum disease and oral cancer. Making a plan to quit can improve your oral and overall health. Alcohol can also increase your risk of oral cancer, liver and kidney disease. Limiting your intake of alcoholic beverages can help prevent these health problems.

Getting the most out of your dental coverage can play a big role in helping achieve your goals for better health. Preventive care has long been a priority in dental benefit plans.

Illinoisans Among The Angriest Polled In 2020 Spending more time at home due to social distancing can leave some people short-fused and particularly irritable in certain situations.

A slow WiFi connection, excess workload or any number of minor annoyances can set off your anger. For many Americans, the coronavirus pandemic brought with it a wave of negative emotions, such as fear, stress, anger and frustration at these unprecedented circumstances.

Alcohol.org, a leading provider of addiction treatment resources, conducted a survey of 3,003 Americans to determine levels of anger across the country in 2020. According to the survey, those who are angriest in the country live in Delaware, where residents admit to getting angry a significant 12 times a week - which equates to almost twice a day. The least angry citizens have been those living in Hawaii, with people only getting riled up twice a week.

Illinoisans polled admitted to getting angry 7 times per week (above the national average of 6).

A rise in anger levels has affected the majority of us, with 88% admitting to feeling angrier since the start of the pandemic. And some of those angry people - 68% in fact - have turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. Unfortunately, this can exacerbate the issue; 65% of people who did this admitted it had the opposite effect and only made things worse.

Alcohol.org explains that, while anger in itself can be a healthy emotion, using alcohol, or any other substance, to try and soothe it can actually disrupt and deepen the angry feelings, due to the effect of the chemicals on our brains.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to help control and manage anger, from journaling your feelings, to meditation, exercise, or talking things over with a trusted friend, loved one or professional. 2020 has been a one we would all like to forget, but the good news is we can looking forward to the upcoming year with some positive tools at our disposal - and maybe even downgrade our anger to just plain grouchy.

MIKE BUDER The buyer’s home inspection is a real pressure point in a real estate transaction.

This is where deals can fall apart. Any positive steps taken by the seller to prepare will be well worth the time invested.

A buyer has made an offer on your home and you are now “UNDER CONTRACT”. The next phase of the process is the home inspection. The inspector works for the BUYER so be sure to make your home shine!

Here are ten simple tips to help eliminate the number of inspection items: 1. If the property is vacant, make sure the utilities are ON (including the water).

2. Take your pets out of the property for the inspection.

3. Make sure all of your lights are functioning. This may be as simple as replacing a light bulb. Don’t let the inspector note that a light fixture is inoperable simply because the bulb is burned out.

4. Repair or replace any broken items (which you’ve been meaning to get to).

This can include door locks, windows, screens, etc.

5. Test smoke detectors and make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed within 15 feet of all sleeping quarters.

6. Clear the perimeter around your house so the foundation and drainage can be inspected without issue.

7. Clean your furnace thoroughly. Replace the filter and scrub down the furnace

inside and out. A shop vac usually works great for removing the dust build up inside the furnace. Make it shine!

8. Trim tree limbs from house. The inspector will be looking at the roof and the gutters. Make sure the tree limbs are cut back so this can be easily accessed.

9. Make sure all components are accessible to the inspector. This includes the furnace, H20 Heater, A/C, crawl space, and attic.

10. Make sure your appliances are ready to be run. If the washer and dryer are included in operation on these appliances.

Also insure that the dishwasher is empty.

This will be run through a cycle. Clean your oven. This will be tested as well.

Clean your house like you would if your in-laws were coming for a visit. The buyers will be spending 2 to 4 hours hanging out in your home as the inspector does his/her job. Make sure your home sparkles inside and out so they remain excited about purchasing your home.

SAVED CROWN POINT MAN $1,089.55 WOODROW WILCOX On January 13, 2021, I fought a false medical bill that a client received. The client is from Crown Point, Indiana.

The firm billing our client for $1,089.55 completely ignored Medicare’s ruling on the claim and Medicare’s partial payment of the claim. The client’s Medicare supplement insurance company paid all the remaining balance. Our client owed nothing but was getting a bill for over a thousand dollars.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm that sent the wrongful bill.

Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $1,089.55 on Account Number XXXXXX for services rendered 11/09/2020.

I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that your bill is wrong. According to the Medicare EOB that it received, your original claim was for $1,112; Medicare approved only $113.21; Medicare paid your firm $91.26; and the secondary insurer paid the balance of $22.45 which your bill acknowledges receiving.

It appears you totally ignored both Medicare’s ruling that the approved amount was $113.71 and Medicare’s payment to your firm in order to arrive at the bogus balance of $1,089.55.

We have requested a copy of the Medicare Summary Notice for our client. The Medicare EOB that the insurance company received and the Medicare Summary Notice that our client will receive should have exactly the same information in the Medicare EOB that you received. It appears that someone at your firm did a less than perfect job of accounting for the Medicare ruling and the Medicare payment. Please, correct your records and send a new statement to our client which shows the correct balance as ZERO. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” to help our clients whenever a breakdown in the Medicare system threatens to harm our client financially. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency?

Army Chief of Staff Inspires National Nonprofit Wreaths Across America Theme Each year, millions of Americans come together to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. This gathering of volunteers and patriots takes place in local and national cemeteries in all 50 states - most recently at more than 2,500 participating locations - as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. Today, the national nonprofit announces the theme for 2021 is “Live up to their legacy.”

The inspiration for this year’s theme came from a statement made by United States Army Chief of Staff, General James C. McConville, in an interview with Chris Wallace on ‘Fox News Sunday’ in early November 2020. General McConville was there to speak on behalf of the United States Army and the upcoming opening of The National Museum of the United States Army, which was being honored as the “Power Player of the Week.” In the discussion, he said “We stand on the shoulders of heroes that have gone before us, and really what we strive to do is live up to their legacy.”

His message was heard by Executive Director Karen Worcester, and many others, and resonated deeply. “Listening to this man, who is a hero in his own right, speak about what and who motivates him is inspiring,” said Worcester. “It is the men and women who serve, every day people, giving of themselves for their country and communities. I urge everyone to

look to the people and the families that have made these sacrifices to keep this country free, and live up to their legacy.”

In 2020, approximately 1.7 million veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 2,557 participating locations around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedoms, with each name said out loud. Wreaths Across America volunteers work year-round to ensure military laid to rest are remembered, their families and living veterans are honored, and the next generation is taught about the value of freedom.

This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 18, 2021. It is always a free event and open to all people (conditions permitting).
