The exhibition includes 20 regional high school districts from Illinois and Indiana. Approximately 300 pieces of student artwork will be featured in galleries and display cases throughout the SSC Art and Design Department for the month of February. WOODROW WILCOX

On January 19, 2022, a client brought to me a medical bill and other papers to check for her. She came to our Merrillville office. She and her husband drove from Hebron, Indiana. I listened to her. She handed papers to me and pointed to things as she talked. She saved the papers and copied them for me in an organized manner. It was easy to read and understand her problem. While she relaxed in our lobby, I wrote a letter to a special officer at a hospital in northwest Indiana. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the hospital. Our client visited our office in Merrillville and brought papers with her about as bill from (your hospital). The bill seeks a balance of $384.95 on Account Number XXXXXXXX for services rendered on 07/15/21. She has exchanged phone calls and correspondence with both (your hospital) and her Medicare Advantage policy’s firm to try to resolve the problem. Briefly stated, here is the problem. (Your hospital) sent to our client a bill which has two balances sought. The statement’s date is 08/04/2021. At the top right of the page, the Account Balance states $384.95. But at the bottom right of the same page, the Account Balance states $260. She contacted her insurance plan company. It advised her to pay the $260 and ignore the $124.95 because the insurance company already paid your firm the $124.95. The EOB from (the insurance company) shows that your firm originally billed $451 for services on 07/13/2021 and

Evolution of Real Estate MIKE BUDER I began my real estate career in 1981 when everything was a lot different. The way people shopped for homes, who the agent represented, how we found listings, contract terms, disclosures, inspections and how we advertised our products and services was nothing like today’s real estate industry. I get asked by newer agents if it was more difficult to learn the business back then. We didn’t use computers so we didn’t need to learn how to adjust to changing systems, formats or apps. We did what we had to do with the tools that were available. There was definitely more human interaction. As a new agent, I practiced on blank contracts, listing agreements and all the documents needed until I understood them. Those of us who have been in the business for a while most likely operate the same way as we know and understand the importance of these legal documents. Sadly, I have worked with plenty of newer agents who didn’t have the same type of knowledge since everything is now at their fingertips and can be downloaded without review. Sure, it’s a lot easier to fill out a contract today but if something is not in the MLS information, many of today’s agents would struggle to find it. Zoning, tax exemptions, mileage rates and the list goes on. I believe we have become too dependent on the internet and stopped learning the tools of the trade. Is real estate still a people business? Most would answer this question yes, however, it

is not the same as before the internet. We didn’t have all these sites displaying homes for sale or make cash purchases without ever marketing the property. I guess some folks prefer convenience over profit. How we find buyer and seller clients has also changed, thanks to the internet. Some agents pay to play to lead generation companies, some pay to get email addresses and phone numbers and other brokers hire others to make cold calls. There are auto dialer software that dial the numbers all day long and connect the two parties. All of this did not exist 40 years ago…a lot of what you see today is not what you get. Virtual staging and photoshop are tools many use so properties look more appealing to online shoppers. I don’t think these are good tools to utilize even when it is disclosed as we know the consumer doesn’t read everything. Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. Call me “old fashioned”…I do miss some of the things we lost in the real estate industry that will probably never come back. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your comments are always welcome. Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman

that the insurance company paid your firm $124.95. She paid the $260 on 10/15/21 with her check # XXXX. The Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from the insurance company shows that she owes no balance for services rendered on 07/13/21. Is it possible that your firm DID RECEIVE THE PAYMENT FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY BUT FAILED TO CREDIT THE CORRECT ACCOUNT AND NOW YOU ARE BILLING OUR CLIENT A FALSE BALANCE? THE FACT THAT YOUR FIRM SENT ONE BILL WITH TWO DIFFERENT BALANCES INDICATES THAT THE BILL HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM. Please, check this and respond in writing to our client. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This firm helps our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems such as this AT NO CHARGE to demonstrate to our clients that we really do care for them. It is our policy to “go the extra mile” for the client as much as we can. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to this insurance agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA We’re story people, you and I. We love to hear great stories, over and over again. Maybe you have parents or grandparents that tell a favorite story — historical or fictional — that always capture your attention. Perhaps there’s a story in your own life that you find yourself thinking about during the quiet moments of your day. We’re story people because our God is a story God. The Lord of creation has chosen to reveal Himself to us through a narrative, which is found in the Bible. The Bible tells the beautiful story of God’s creating the world, humankind’s mistakes polluting the world, God’s patience and mercy throughout history, God’s sending his son Jesus to redeem His people, and the promise of Jesus’ return and God’s final judgment on the world. If God’s story weren’t astounding enough, He has brought you and me into this story as well! Those who love and accept Jesus Christ through faith are part of the family of God, and if you’re a Christian, the story of your life will ultimately be the same as mine: “I’m a sinner, saved by Jesus Christ.” What a truly beautiful story that is! One worth telling over and over. Written by Katherine Hankey in 1866, the stanza below is taken from the hymn “I love to Tell the Story,” and always brings a tear to my eye: I love to tell the story; for those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it, like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing a new, new, song, ‘Twill be the old, old story, that I have loved so long. I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

SNOW SKI HOLIDAY IN COLORADO-The entire Zeleznik- Golob family took a snow holiday in January in the beautiful Breckenridge, Vail and Keystone Resorts of Colorado. the pictures here show the group ‘après skiing’ in one of the lodges-Dave, Tracy, Garrett, Cookie, Michelle, Grant, Julie, Kelley and Nick. Cookie and Tracy work at Coldwell Banker, Schererville and Orland Park. Cookie joked that while all the others hit the ski slopes and went snowboarding, she would be content to relax by the huge lodge fireplace, hot toddy in hand, dreaming about their Hawaiian vacation next year! *** PLEASE BRING YOUR PETS IN DURING THIS COLD SNAP--N 2 N is an advocate for pets left out in the sub zero cold and snow. Real Estate Questions & Answers

Say I saw it in The Shopper

WE CARE ABOUT PERFECT AIR.

ESPECIALLY YOURS.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: About five years ago I contacted a neighbor whose tree was obstructing our view. Granted the tree has been slow growing, but it still blocks some of our view. Though I offered to pay for its removal, she declined my offer, and I respectfully let it go. She was elderly, and when she died I respectfully contacted her daughter and again asked that the tree be cut down. The daughter said that she would sell the house and it would be up to the new owners. Other neighbors who also have obstructed views have contacted me and asked me to please find a solution. We all know that our property values are being adversely affected by this problem. What can we do? Answer: What kind of view is it blocking? Was the offending tree in place when you bought the property? If so, you knew it was there. You also knew that trees don’t shrink, they get bigger. But you still bought your home knowing this.

Your neighbor may feel that the value of her property would drop and her privacy would be reduced if she removed the trees, thus her reluctance to trim and chop. At least the daughter has offered a possible resolution to the problem: Welcome the new buyers to the neighborhood and discuss the concerns you and your neighbors have about the trees ... perhaps they will be more open to your trimming & chopping suggestions. Maybe a chainsaw for a housewarming gift will provide a stronger hint! E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? If you’re an investor, it’s always useful to look back – and look ahead. How did you do in 2021? And what can you anticipate in 2022? First, let’s quickly review what happened in 2021. Despite the ongoing pandemic, domestic political unrest, supply chain logjams and the return of inflation, the financial markets turned in some strong results: The S&P 500 gained almost 27% for the year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average returned nearly 19% and the Nasdaq Composite gained more than 21%. And while your own returns may not have matched these figures – since you probably own a mix of investments, some of which are not tracked by these indexes – you still probably did pretty well. But now that we’ve turned the calendar to 2022, what can you expect from the investment world? Of course, it’s always somewhat risky to make predictions of this nature – and if our experience with the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s to be humble about projecting the future. Nonetheless, we can look at some possibilities. First of all, don’t be surprised to see some market volatility. In 2021, we saw real gross domestic product (GDP)

growth of nearly 6%, largely fueled by two factors: an increase in consumer spending as the economy reopened following an easing of the pandemic, and the Federal Reserve’s continued monetary stimulus. But in 2022, the combination of higher inflation (at least during the first half of the year), higher interest rates (the Fed has indicated it may raise rates more than once) and the continued uncertainty around COVID-19 may result in a “correction,” which is generally defined as a drop of 10% or more from a recent peak in the financial markets, as measured by a major index such as the S&P 500. Corrections are not at all unusual – in fact, it’s more unusual to go through a year without a correction. But the average market correction is short-lived, typically lasting just a few months. And a market correction, when prices are down, may actually present an opportunity to purchase quality investments to add to your portfolio or to help diversify it further. Other developments may also suggest a relatively favorable investment environment this year. For one thing, inflation may well subside somewhat in the second half of the year, as we should see a clearing of some supply chain

Celebrate Black History Month

bottlenecks. Plus, household savings are strong, as is consumer spending, while wage growth is above average. Taken together, these factors may help boost the economy in the latter part of 2022. Furthermore, even if the Fed bumps up interest rates, they’ll still be relatively low by historical standards and shouldn’t overly hinder businesses who need to borrow to expand their operations. In any single year, pandemic or not, external events will affect the financial markets. And while you shouldn’t ignore these events, you also don’t want to let them dictate all, or even most, of your financial moves. You’re much better off focusing on things you can control – and the best way to do that is to stick with an investment strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. By doing so, you’ll give yourself the best chance of success in 2022 – and beyond.
