5 Reasons Why Physicians Experience Burnout and How to Avoid It “Unfortunately, 1 in 2 physicians experience burnout, causing painful emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and disconnection from a sense of meaning and purpose. Not only does this erode their own well-being but numerous studies document that physician burnout contributes to increased medical errors, decreased empathy for patients, and physician shortages due to attrition from the profession. The good news is that there are simple steps physicians can take to build resilience and avoid burnout.,” says Dr. Gazelle. Reason #1: Medicine is a high stakes profession Let’s face it, it doesn’t get much more high stakes than taking care of fellow human beings! With this great responsibility comes stress and worry. While this is part of the job, physicians have to learn how to balance this stress and responsibility with positive things that enable them to cultivate more resilience and wellbeing. Reason #2: Physicians learn to be very self-critical Much of our training is focused on how we compare to others, and the emphasis is typically on where we are coming up short. Often, no matter how many things go well, the physician finds themself focusing on the one thing that went awry. They don’t learn to stay focused on all the good they are doing. Focusing on the good is a powerful way to avoid burnout and boost mental health. Reason #3: Physicians learn to be compassionate to patients, but not to themselves While it’s critically important to be compassionate toward patients, the work of the physician is so demanding that physicians need compassion too. When all the compassion is directed toward patients, basically the physician is giving themselves the message that others are deserving of care and compassion, but

First Installment Tax Year 2020 property taxes are due Tuesday, March 1, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas reminded taxpayers today. Almost 1.8 million bills were posted on cookcountytreasurer. com in early December and mailed to taxpayers in late January. “More than 70% of property owners have paid their taxes, including more than 207,000 taxpayers who went to our website and paid online,” Pappas said. “Paying online is safe, and online payments will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, March 1.” To make a payment or download a copy of your tax bill, visit cookcountytreasurer.com: • Select the blue box labeled “Pay Online for Free” • Search by property address or enter your Property Index Number • There is no fee if you pay from your bank account For those who cannot pay the full amount due, partial payments are accepted. After March 1, any balance due is charged 1.5% per month, as required by state law. While on the website, Pappas encouraged homeowners to: • Search for $84 million in available refunds. • Check to see if you are missing out on $34 million in tax exemptions, which can lower the tax bill. • Read the Pappas Studies, a series of research projects that includes a 20-year history of Cook County property taxes.

Women May Need Financial ‘Catch-up’ SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN It’s unfortunate but true: If you’re a woman, you face more obstacles than men in achieving financial security. And that means you may well need to put in some extra effort. Just how serious is your challenge? For one thing, women still face a gender pay gap – based on median incomes, women earn about 82 cents for every dollar a man makes, according to the Census Bureau. This pay gap amounts to a nearly $470,000 difference in lifetime earnings, according to an Edward Jones/Age Wave study. Furthermore, when factoring in the career disruptions women face because of caring for children and elderly parents, that $470,000 becomes a $1.1 million lifetime earnings gap, according to the study. Finally, women tend to live longer than men, meaning their lifetime earnings must last longer. Everyone’s situation is different, but these figures at least point to the challenges many women encounter. To help yourself, consider these moves: Pay yourself first. You always have to pay your bills – but, at the same time, pay yourself by moving money automatically from your checking account each month into a low-risk, liquid vehicle, such as a money market account or some type of cash management account connected with your investment portfolio. This move can help give you a “bucket” of money to use for any reason, such as the need to step away from your job to care for children or aging parents. Increase your 401(k) contributions each year. If you have a 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan, take full advantage of it. At a minimum, contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered, and increase your contributions every year, or every time your salary increases.

Fully fund your IRA. Even if you contribute to a 401(k), you may still be eligible to invest in an IRA – and you should. You can put in up to $6,000 per year to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. (However, a Roth IRA does have income limitations that may prevent you from contributing the full amount.) Learn about Social Security options. Because Social Security provides a lifetime income stream that includes cost-of-living increases, it can help mitigate two key risks you face in retirement: longer life expectancies and inflation. You can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your monthly checks will be significantly larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. If you delay taking benefits beyond your full retirement age, your payments will increase by 8% per year, until age 70, when your benefits max out. You’ll also want to learn about spousal and survivor benefits, which can affect how much you’ll receive. Get some help. You may be able to benefit from working with a financial professional, who can evaluate your situation, make investment recommendations, and help answer questions you may have, such as, “What moves can I make so I can afford to become a caregiver for an elderly parent?” Hopefully, there will be a day when women won’t have to play financial catch-up. For now, though, use all the means at your disposal to help yourself. City to Remove Mask and Vaccine Requirements for Certain Public Settings on February 28 in Response to Continued Improvement in COVID-19 Metrics Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D., announced today that the City will remove the mask and vaccine requirements for certain public spaces on February 28 to align with the State of Illinois’ previously announced plans to lift the statewide indoor mask mandate on that day. “Based on key data, it looks as if the worst of the Omicron surge is behind us and we will be able to safely remove these emergency measures instituted to protect the health and safety of our residents,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “I want to thank Chicagoans and in particular, our business community for adhering to these measures and helping us pass through this difficult time while keeping restaurants and other businesses open.” The key metrics of the City has been used to track COVID-19 cases and hospital capacity since early in the pandemic including COVID-19 cases diagnosed per day, test positivity, and hospital and ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. As of February 21, the 7-dayrolling-average test positivity (now 1.5% in Chicago), hospital COVID-19 census, and ICU COVID-19 census have all reached the pre-defined “lower” risk category, meaning they have been in an acceptable lower risk range for the last week. COVID-19 lab-confirmed cases (now 283 cases per day in Chicago) remain just above the historic “lower” risk range – but this is offset by the much higher testing and very low-test positivity. By February 28, assuming declines continue in the 7-day rolling average, the city will have been in the lower risk range for two weeks and able to lift these restrictions. “Since COVID-19 arrived in Chicago, we have been guided by the data when making de-

cisions about necessary steps to protect people and keep from overwhelming our healthcare system,” said CDPH Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D. “This doesn’t mean COVID is gone, it simply means transmission levels are lower than they have been during surges. I still encourage people to take precautions and definitely get vaccinated to protect yourself and your loved ones.” The vaccine requirement for restaurants, bars, gyms and other indoor public settings where food and beverages are served went into effect on January 3 in response to the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases both locally and nationally, driven in part by the Omicron variant. More Chicagoans were hospitalized with COVID-19 during the Omicron surge than at any prior point in the pandemic and the great majority of these hospitalizations were in unvaccinated Chicagoans. Masks will continue to be required in health care settings, on public transit, and in other congregate settings. As the City transitions its mitigation measures to remove the mask requirement, many Chicagoans will continue to wear masks in public spaces for a variety of reasons, even if they are vaccinated. For example, after 5 days of isolation or quarantine, masks will continue to be required in days 6-10 in public spaces, as they are now. CDPH recommends Chicagoans who may be immunocompromised or have a family member who is immunocompromised still wear a mask, as well residents under the age of 5 who are still not eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine. Please be kind and considerate of your fellow Chicagoans and the decisions we all continue to make to protect themselves and those around them.

RICHARD ZEKVELD Today is Ash Wednesday, a day many Christians observe to mark the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is the season leading to Good Friday and our celebration of Christ’s death on the cross for our sins. The following poetic stanzas reflect on the events leading up to Christ’s death for us on the cross. Hear the final Adam crying, “Father, take this cup away!” Hear the Son, himself denying, “I will do your will today.” 1 Adam left creation cursed. Christ his legacy reversed. 2 See his own betray, deny him. 3 Hear the court their Christ accuse. 4 Hear the mob shout, “Crucify him!” 5 Soldiers mock him and abuse. 6 Pilate dares not set him free. 7 Rome hangs Jesus on a tree. 8 Darkness fell at noon, declaring, “Cursed the man hung on a tree.” Christ, in anguish, cried, despairing, “Why have you forsaken me?” 9 There, in hell, he took our place. Jesus! What astounding grace!

FR. DAVE SIMONETTI OF CHRIST OUR LIGHT CHURCH IN HEGEWISCH PRAYS FOR PEACE: Despite the fact that the church pipes froze and there was no heat at our church, 13145 S. Houston, formerly St. Florian, the congregation and Fr. Dave soldiered on Sunday February 27, 2022, shivering on through his sermon, the subject of which was prayers for the Ukrainian people. Fr. Dave read a February 25, 2022 letter from Mary/ Fatima/Medjugorje urging everyone to be “as a child of Jesus.” In other words, “live a good life as a child would”(my paraphrase). Fr. Dave noted that “we are in a very dangerous place now,” alluding to the potential Worldwide/ Middle East unrest. In other matters, Fr. Dave noted that the heat went out on the almost cathedral sized house of worship, so we all kept our winter wraps on. The HVAC person was coming at 11 am so no one lingered after Mass to chat as is the usual case. But privately as we all filed out, private prayers were being said for the Ukranian people in hopes that the Russian siege ends soon and life can get back to ‘normal.’

LAMESHIA ROGERS TALKS VOLKSWAGEN: this young lady is a virtual fountain of information about the VW automobile. Since the new cars are ‘smart cars’ one has to be especially astute about the inner workings of the vehicle, many of which are tied into our equally ‘smart’ phones! A former public health executive/practitioner, Lameshia decided 4 years ago to try something different. Since she had always loved cars, VW seemed a natural fit with its intricate, sophisticated design. Full disclosure, my husband and I just took delivery on our new pearl grey 2022 Taos and VW Sales consultant Lameshia Rogers, VW Manager Bogdan Studzinski and VW finance guy Sean Pelkey of City VW in Highland, In walked us through the process. A hugely happy ending took place after an unfortunate accident in December 2021 with my 2015 Passat-- and required “a new ride!” Needless to say, we are delighted with our new SUV and plan a road trip this summer! THANK YOU, BOGDAN, LAMESHIA AND SEAN, *** CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF SHARON ROLEK OF HEGEWISCH: Sharon had worked at the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese for many years and was a member of the former St. Columba Church in Hegewisch. NOEL ZAMARRON DETAILS CARS AT H & K IN HAMMOND: While we are giving credit where credit is due-- here is someone we all should know, Noel Zamarron, 32, of H & K car sales and detailing, 7104 Kennedy, Hammond, Indiana. Noel took charge of the ‘loaner’ that I brought to him just this past week, while I was waiting for my Taos. The Chevy Malibu needed to be cleaned and detailed so I could bring it back to Hertz the same way I received it--so Noel stepped in and brought it back to its original navy/black finish. According to H & K owner Kurt Simon, Noel has been an employee there for many years and was very experienced in bringing back vehicles to they’re former beauty by first evaluating what to be done- and then doing it. For example, road work was being done in Hegewisch recently and some tar got on the passenger side of the Chevy. Noel has a tool that deftly removed the tar but left the finish underneath bright and shiny! Thanks to H & K, the Kurt Simon Family and Noel Zamarron! *** CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF GLORIA FREEMAN OF CALUMET CITY: Gloria, a longtime resident of Calumet City passed away recently. Retired many years, Gloria was also an animal lover and a collector of treasures only she cared about. Gloria donated her worldly goods to charity and left behind a legacy of good humor and laughter--may Gloria Freeman Rest in Peace. ***

Illinois Lawmakers Must Create Legal Balance Between Owners, Renters of Storage Units During and since my time as an activeduty officer in the Army, I have devoted much time and energy to protecting military service members from financial predators. Last year I focused on the passage of the Predatory Lending Prevention Act (PLPA), and the nationwide repeal of a Comptroller of the Currency rule that protected payday lenders using evasive schemes to get around state-imposed usury rate caps. While those efforts were successful, there is more to do. Recently, I took notice of a bill in the Illinois Legislature, HB 4627, which would allow the owners of self-storage locker facilities to avoid altogether the required public notice of the auction of renters’ items when his or her belongings have been confiscated. Those auctions often take place without the knowledge of the renter, who might be overseas defending our country or assisting fellow citizens falling victim to natural disasters. Illinois law requires owners to notify renters of an auction only by sending notice to the renter’s “last known address.” A deeper look into Illinois’ Self Storage Facility Act reveals a law that is astonishingly lopsided in favor of locker owners to the detriment of renters. It is a law in need of reform. Whether the renter is active-duty military, our neighbors in the military Reserve or National Guard called to duty, a victim of eviction, or a victim of a house fire, every effort must be made to locate the renter before selling what could be their worldly belongings. Public notice in newspapers and their attendant websites helps. California law requires owners to allow renters to submit the name and address of a second individual to whom all notices must be sent. In addition, California law also allows renters to

formally object to an auction after which the owner must get a court’s blessing before proceeding. Illinois law should do the same. Locker rent increases and late fees should be examined. How many rent increases should a renter endure after their belongings are in storage? Active-duty military or reservists and Guardsmen called to duty might find it impossible to competitively shop or even receive notice once deployed. The current law should be viewed from the perspective of the transient and the vulnerable, not from only the point of view of owners. I am all too familiar with real-life cases in which deployed service members have lost literally everything when storage facility owners sell off their possessions. I am sure that, given these difficult times, many other Illinoisans have suffered or will suffer the same. There are several other changes in Illinois law that could help protect the renters of storage lockers. Many of those changes have been proposed by my colleagues, including the Woodstock Institute, Chicago Urban League, Housing Action Illinois, and Legal Action Chicago. Those changes include several provisions that would benefit renters and help provide a balance between the rights of renters and owners. I urge legislators to not only reject HB 4627 but to reform Illinois’ Self Storage Facility Act as soon as possible. Retired Army Col. Paul Kantwill serves as founding executive director of the Rule of Law Institute at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He previously led the office of Servicemember Affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He had a 25-year career as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Army and served in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf.

5 Easy Ways to Enhance Digestive Health As your social schedule picks up steam and you attend more social gatherings and celebrations, you may find yourself with an unexpected issue: digestive troubles. Problems like this can have a negative impact on your overall wellness, so it’s important to make healthy digestion a priority. According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of how to live long and be healthy, the health of the digestive system is the core of optimum health. Ayurvedic medicine asserts the digestive system is based on the strength and balance of its Agni (fire), which enables the body to absorb, digest and assimilate food. The teachings suggest an imbalanced Agni creates undigested residues, which form toxins that create imbalances and can lead to disease. Some of the dietary guidelines for healthy digestion and strong Agni include: Allowing 4-6 hours between meals Avoiding eating between meals Avoiding foods with cold, wet and heavy qualities Drinking ginger tea or hot water to stimulate the Agni Starting a meal with pungent (hot), sour and salty flavors Consuming a small amount of bitter taste before a meal to increase the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach Take steps to protect and nurture your digestive health with these tips: Add Fiber to Your Diet Plant-based foods that are high in fiber fill you up faster, so you’re less likely to overeat, and they also help with digestive regularity. Increase your intake of high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. Take a gradual approach to avoid upsetting your digestive tract and bump up your water intake as you go since fiber will absorb it and decrease the likelihood you experience gas or cramping. Stay Hydrated Keeping your body well hydrated is like making sure your car’s

engine is well lubricated. It keeps all your moving parts in sync and operating for top performance. Some fluids can also help with detoxification, which can be especially beneficial when your social calendar is full and your opportunities to overindulge are greater. An option like Buddha Teas’ Detox Dharma contains detoxifying herbs that stimulate your digestive system. Strengthening and soothing herbs are also incorporated into this balanced formula resulting in an effective yet gentle detox tea. For another solution, Turmeric Ginger Tea contains enough black pepper to make curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) bio-available in hot water, helping build healthy Agni. Eat Slower In today’s busy world, it’s easy to scarf down a meal in record time. However, slowing down gives your body more time to process food. You’ll give your brain more time to communicate with your stomach and be more aware of when you’ve satisfied your hunger. Start Exercising If you need one more reason to get moving, your digestive health could be it. Regular physical activity promotes better digestion. However, if you jump into a workout too quickly after eating, you could actually do the opposite. Eat light before exercising then have a protein-rich balanced meal for recovery afterward. Manage Stress Too much stress can manifest multiple physical problems, including interrupting your digestion. Try mindful meditation or another method of relaxing and relieving stress. Getting plenty of rest can also help keep stress in check. If you’re looking for a good night of sleep, consider Buddha Teas’ CBD Sleepy Buddha Blend. Herbs for calming and relieving stress are paired with organic, water-soluble, THC-free CBD to leave you feeling restored and rejuvenated. What makes a great Realtor? Certainly not perfection. There is no such thing. My feeling on this is that if you actually try, try, try and do your best for your clients that even if you are unsuccessful, you have not failed. If you do your best and put your right foot forward, remain honest and sincere and place your clients’ needs first and foremost, truly work to do the right thing even if it means losing a commission, then you are one of the best. We’ve all heard that real estate agents are all in it for themselves and they are not to be trusted. I believe that the face of our business has changed drastically. Over the past fifteen years there is nothing easy about being a Realtor. There is no consistency in lending practices and still no stabilization of home prices. Even though I communicate constantly with attorneys, lenders, appraisers, title officers, and fellow Realtors to keep current on industry changes and trends, I, personally have had people hopping mad at me. I probably deserved it. I have felt that I dropped the ball and could have done better for my clients. I don’t like that feeling and

I’m sure most Realtors have experienced it. On the other hand, we have also had some deals process and close so smoothly that people would question our deserving to be paid a commission. Here is a valuable tip: The easier a professional makes their work appear, be it your dentist, mechanic, carpenter, etc…isn’t necessarily a reflection of the simplicity of the tasks. There is also the possibility it is the fruit of their accumulated experience and acquired wisdom at their trade. Translated: The simpler your Realtor makes the purchase or sale look and feel the more value you got for your investment. The hope and desire of most Realtors is that we leave a good enough impression to have our clients/customer speak highly of us. Striking artifacts—displayed along one wall of the gallery in a series of innovative cases that promote viewing from multiple vantage points—provide insight into the beliefs and practices of this illustrious North African culture. Recurring themes throughout this fresh presentation of the collection consider the impact of Egypt’s natural environment, including the Nile River, on its visual culture; reveal the processes of ancient Egyptian artists; and explore the centrality of gods and goddesses to life (and death) along the Nile. Arresting sculptures, such as the statue of Shebenhor, show how ancient Egyptians represented themselves so that they would be remembered for eternity, while funerary works—including a gilded funerary mask—unveil practices for preparing for and protecting oneself in the afterlife. “After a decade-long hiatus, we are thrilled to invite visitors to revisit old favorites from the collection and to experience it anew as they delve into this vibrant African culture,” said Ashley Arico, Assistant Curator of Ancient Egyptian Art. The display of over 80 objects, largely from the permanent collection is further enhanced with an audio guide exploring the cultural significance of select works.

SOUP FACTS The earliest archaeological evidence for the consumption of soup dates back to 6000 BC, and it was hippopotamus soup. Americans eat more than 10 billion bowls of soup each year. The most popular soup variety in the U.S. is chicken noodle. Soups are classified into two groups: clear soups and thick soups. Condensed soup was invented by Dr. John T. Dorrance, a chemist with the Campbell Soup Company, in 1897.

WOODROW WILCOX

On February 25, 2022, I wrote to the President & CEO of a medical firm in Illinois to help our client with a small medical bill. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to help with our client’s bill. I am asking for your help. You know the divisions of your firm better than I do. Please, forward this letter to the correct person or department. I am trying to help our client. But I got no help from your firm when I phoned the number on the bill of 847-XXXXXXX. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $41.57 on Guarantor Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on 07/17/21. I phoned our client’s Medicare supplement insurance plan company to learn what it knew of this bill. IT REPORTED THAT MEDICARE NEVER SENT THIS CLAIM INFORMATION TO IT. That is not the fault of the patient, her insurance company, or you. It is Medicare’s fault. Medicare failing to send claim information to senior’s secondary insurers is a serious and growing problem. I just wanted to know which person or de-

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Recently we viewed a home and fell in love with it. Our agent advised there was a bid placed by another party. We in return also placed a bid. I called my agent the next morning and gave him our top dollar. However, the house was sold to the first bidders, and we were never asked to counter bid! Is there anything we can do about this situation? We are heartbroken that we didn’t even get a chance to raise our bid. Answer: All sellers have different motivations and interests. It may well be that the first bid met all the owners’ criteria and that they no longer wished to continue marketing the home. Could they have gotten more money? Perhaps, but selling a home involves a certain psychological cost and some owners simply want to sell as quickly as possible and move on. You were told that there was an existing bid on the property -- a bid that could

be accepted at any moment prior to withdrawal. Your bid was not made until the next morning. It’s perfectly possible that the first bid was accepted even as yours was being developed. Once a bid has been accepted, the property is under contract and the sellers have no obligation to consider other offers. Lastly, price is only one consideration in an offer. While a higher price is surely an enticement, there may have been other factors which attracted the sellers. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? partment at your firm would handle such a problem as this. When I phoned your firm, I got no helpful information. So, I am writing to you. To fix this problem as fast as possible, please send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB information for this claim/bill directly to the secondary insurer at the address which follows. All I ask is that your firm treat our senior citizen client as fairly as you would want a senior in your family to be treated. I would appreciate the cooperation of your firm. Here is the address. All the help that I gave our client was free of charge. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, shouldn’t you switch to an insurance agency that does? This one does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available at book stores and online.
