SSC Seeking Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutors South Suburban College (SSC) is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging area residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program. New tutor training sessions will take place at the Main Campus in South Holland on August 31st and September 2nd from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., and September 7th and 9th from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. SSC is seeking new volunteers to join its Literacy Program to assist students during the Fall Semester. The tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. We also offer online training as well. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale
Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is scheduled by the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites. Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. To register for the upcoming volunteer tutor training or to inquire about adult literacy services, please contact Dianne Needles, Adult Literacy Grants Manager, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email dneedles@ssc.edu. South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, Illinois.
Use Lycopene to combat sun damage Most of us know the importance of applying sunscreen before going out for a day in the sun. However, there must be more natural ways of boosting our body’s natural defenses against UV rays, right? Lycopene is your secret weapon to combatting sun damage. Lycopene, a carotenoid found in red fruits, can protect your skin against UV radiation as it absorbs both UVA and UVB rays. Enjoying lycopene rich foods can reduce sunburn and UV radiation skin aging. The timing of consuming such foods aligns with the sun. In other words, enjoy them during the daytime to get the most benefit. For your next outdoor adventure, here are some foods that are recommended to help fight against sun damage: Food #1: Watermelon. What is more delightful on a hot summer day than enjoying juice watermelon. Its UV protection takes a few weeks to build up, but enjoying this delicious fruit actually provides more lycopene than fresh tomatoes and can act as a natural sunscreen. Note: do not eschew topical sunscreen, but this internal protection is a nice benefit.
Food #2: Tomatoes. Half of the richest foods in lycopene are variations of tomato products. The winner is sundried tomatoes, followed by tomato puree, fresh tomatoes and canned. Sundried tomatoes contain more than 10 times the amount of lycopene as fresh tomatoes. Tomatoes are especially sweet in the summer and can be enjoyed on salads or as a side dish with most meals. Food #3: Guava. Guava beats watermelon for its lycopene content, placing third to sundried tomatoes and tomato puree. It is interesting that this traditional tropical fruit, along with papaya, the next one on the list, are common in warm climates where their sun protecting capabilities are so needed. Enjoy it as part of a fruit smoothie, summer salad or healthy dessert. Food #4: Papaya. Papaya, another tropical fruit, is a great addition to any summer fruit salad or a sweet addition to any meal, including a morning smoothie. Food #5: Pink grapefruit. Citrus fruits are particularly healthy, but the “pink” is a trademark for lycopene and is a delicious way to start your day and boost your sun protection internally.

It’s pretty well known that drinking coffee acts as a stimulant. I mean, that’s the whole point right? Well, actually it’s not! Coffee does so much more than add a boost to your morning or a pick me up to get us through the after lunch mild food coma. Here are several health benefits of drinking coffee for you to ponder on with your next cup of joe Coffee helps you burn fat - There is a reason that caffeine is found in a lot of popular fat-burning supplements. Studies have linked healthy caffeine intake to boost your metabolic rate by 3–11%. Contains essential nutrients - The coffee bean is in fact a seed. We know that seeds tend to be pretty good for us, and the coffee seed being no exception. Riboflavin (vitamin B2), Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), Manganese and potassium, Magnesium and niacin (vitamin B3) can all be found in coffee Coffee protects your liver - People who drink 4 or more cups of coffee a day have been linked
to have up to a 80% lower risk of developing cirrhosis, where the liver is largely replaced by scar tissue. Coffee may be the healthiest part of our SAD western diet - With pancakes, bacon and eggs being the normal routine for many of us here in the western world, aka SAD (standard American diet), coffee may be the one shiny brightspot. Studies indicate that many people get more antioxidants from coffee than from fruits and vegetables combined. Coffee is one of the most antioxidant packed beverages that you can drink in the world. Coffee Boost Brain Health & Cognitive Function - Coffee has been shown to have some pretty great short and long term effects on cognition and memory. In the short term, it can improve mood, vigilance, learning and reaction time. Long term, it can help protect against diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

JOSH BOOTSMA When Gustav Holst wrote his The Planets masterpiece just over 100 years ago, his seven-planet orchestral suite (Earth and Pluto omitted) supposedly resembled each planet’s astrological character. The fourth movement is called “Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity.” How jolly Jupiter really is is probably just as much a mystery in our day as it was in Holst’s, but I very much enjoy listening to it and imagining I’m in outer space seeing Jupiter for the first time. One of the middle melodies in the movement is called “Thaxted,” named after an English village in which Holst lived. One of the contemporary uses of the tune is in a hymn written by Michael Perry in 1982 entitled, “O God Beyond All Praising.” When I sing the two-verse hymn, it brings a sense of joy and majesty to my praise of God, because of both the tune and words of the song. I think of how beautiful and imposing Jupiter must be — and then I think of how much more beautiful and powerful God must be. He truly is the God beyond all praising. I hope you’ll listen to Holst’s The Planets and “O God Beyond All Praising” and appreciate them both. The words to the hymn are below: O God beyond all praising, we worship you today And sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; For we can only wonder at every gift you send, At blessings without number and mercies without end: We lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, We honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord. Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, That we who know your favor may serve you as our king; And whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, We’II triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: To marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, And make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. cancer deaths. The EPA presently suggests that corrective actions should be taken to reduce Radon levels in your home if measured over the long term (usually 48 hours) at 4.0 PCi/l or greater. Question: We were told by a friend to get a Radon test when we find our next home. We never heard of this. Is this something most buyers do? Answer: Yes, you should have it done as part of your inspection, and No, most buyer do not have the home checked for Radon during the home inspection process. Radon is a radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless and is impossible to detect without the use of sensitive test equipment. Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced by the breakdown of Uranium in soil, water and rock. When allowed to accumulate to high levels, it can be hazardous to long term health. Your closing has been scheduled…It seems like the stress of buying a home – from choosing the right house, procuring a mortgage and negotiating an agreeable price is finally behind you. Even the inspection, appraisal, and other necessities that can upend a deal are finished. Now, however, you face one final hurdle – the closing process. Even though today due to COVID many lenders have moved this process online, you may still end up sitting at a table with people you have never met before. This includes the title company’s representative, the seller’s real estate agent and the seller’s attorney. There are many documents to sign, most of which you’ve never seen before. With probably the biggest financial decision of your life on the line, panic seems to be an appropriate response. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid high anxiety. Hiring an attorney or using a legal service to represent you at the closing is always good for your own peace of mind. If you are getting a mortgage the lender’s professionals will review the documents for accuracy. If you do not use an attorney, typically the title officer will explain what each document is and let you know where to sign. The most important documents a buyer will have to sign include a mortgage which details the agreed terms of the loan, a mortgage note which is a legal document where you promise to pay off the loan amount. The deed is the document that officially transfers the property from the seller to the buyer and the title insurance which protects the buyer and the lender from potential problems with the

newly obtained property. The day of closing you will need to bring a current photo id and your certified or cashiers check to cover closing costs and down payment (unless you previously wired the money). Your funds will need to come from an account that has been approved by your mortgage professional and loan underwriter prior to issuing your clear to close, also, though you filled out that loan application previously, you may be surprised that you are asked to sign a new one at the closing. You are required to let the lender know if your financial circumstances have changed since the original application before you sign. After all the documents have been signed, you may need to wait for the lender’s wire to clear (your actual loan) and then you’ll receive your keys for your new home and be sent on your way with copies of all the documents. It would be smart to put these in a safe place. Also, you likely will receive temporary coupons for your mortgage payments with the due dates on them. Closing on a home can be a draining experience. However, once your closing is settled, you can look forward to many years of home ownership. Lifestyle Creep
Are Trust Services Right for you?
NANCY ZEKVELD Lifestyle creep. That sounds just a little bit ominous to me. Something is slowly making its way toward you. Lifestyle creep refers to behavior that occurs as income increases and your lifestyle expands along with it. Or your lifestyle expands BEYOND your increase in income. It is a change in thinking about purchases made that classifies the item as something that you believe you have a right to have or MUST have rather than something you would like to have but can live without even though it might be somewhat inconvenient. An example of this might be when you get a raise that leads you to consider the addition of a second (or third) vehicle to your family. It would be nice to have the convenience of not having to schedule the use of a car, but will the costs (finance charges, sales tax, registration and title fees, dealership fees, insurance, fuel, and maintenance) be sustainable in the long run? How this happens. The combination of easy credit to live above your means, along with actual increases in earning potential have the effect of enabling lifestyle creep and, if unchecked, this effect will cause many financial problems. What can be done? The first defense against this creep is to become aware that it is happening. Because it may happen slowly over time you might not notice until its negative effects begin to stress your financial life. One guard against this is to establish and live by a budget. That way you will notice the budget being stretched and can adjust accordingly. It should
also be noted that when someone says to you that you need to “live on less” many times this is not actually “living on less”; you may be living quite comfortably but are influenced to think a higher income necessitates purchases that you think will make you happier, feel better, or more content. What drives this? Seeing others with more may prompt you to think “I need that.” On the other hand, looking at those who have less may prompt you to think “I have all that I need” and lead to thankfulness and the realization that getting more does not make you happier, feel better, or more content. It’s easy to get yourself into a situation where your lifestyle exceeds your income but it can be challenging to get yourself back on track. We would love to help. With free, confidential, professional counseling, Christians Against Poverty can advise and support you. With personal counsel and on-going support we can help you journey from debt to the freedom of living within your means. Contact: capamerica.org/debthelp or call toll free 888 777 4620 for free debt help. Nancy is the South Suburbs CAP Debt Center manager in partnership with Covenant Fellowship Church in South Holland. Wife of Pastor Richard Zekveld and mom to Anton, Annika, Autumn, Augustin, and Adamina, Nancy loves connecting with her community through Christians Against Poverty.
Speaking Of Seniors
Sometimes I Scold Them! WOODROW WILCOX On June 18, 2021, I sent a letter to a hospital that scolded the hospital for being very unprofessional. Sometimes, I scold medical firms to prompt them to act properly and professionally. A client got a medical bill. I contacted her insurance company to get some facts and learned that the medical firm that sent the bill was not cooperating with the insurance company to get the claim paid. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $380.74 on Guarantor / Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on March 11 and 12, 2021. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that it did not receive the Medicare EOB on this claim. It reported that on 05/28/2021 it contacted your firm to ask you to send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB information on this claim directly to it – the secondary insurer. As of this date, three weeks later, your firm has failed to supply that information so that the claim can be paid.
What is wrong with you? The only reasons that this bill has not been paid by the secondary insurer are that it never got the complete claim information and when it asked your firm to cooperate so that the claim could be paid, your firm failed to act professionally. If you’re extremely busy with your career and family and you’ve accumulated a fair amount of assets, you might be concerned about a variety of issues related to financial management and legacy planning. Specifically, you might think you don’t have the time or expertise to deal with these matters effectively. If this is the case, you might want to consider using a trust company. You might think you need to have a large estate or millions of dollars to benefit from working with a trust company, but that’s not the case. And if you’re not familiar with what a trust company can do, you might be surprised at all the services it can provide, including the following: Wealth management – Typically, when working with a trust company, you’ll receive investment management designed to help you achieve various goals, such as a comfortable retirement and college for your children. The company can manage retirement accounts, monitor investments and disburse funds, make changes as needed and ensure compliance with government reporting for contributions, withdrawals and rollovers. While different companies operate in different ways, you may have an arrangement in which you work with a personal financial advisor and a separate portfolio manager. Financial management during incapacity – If you were to become incapacitated and couldn’t make financial decisions, a trust company can step in, giving you peace of mind from knowing that your financial assets will be managed by a team of professionals, helping protect you and your family from potentially dire consequences. Trust administration – A trust company can perform several essential tasks related to administering your trust. The company can act as trustee for a trust you’ve established, such as a revocable living trust, which can allow your estate to avoid probate while providing you with great control over how your assets will be distributed at your passing. Alternatively, the trust company can work alongside an individual you’ve designated to execute the terms of a trust. If your selected trustee resigns or becomes unable to make decisions, the trust company can serve as successor trustee. When it’s time to settle your estate, the trust company can handle the valuation, dispersion and re-titling of assets, pay off any debts and expenses, and complete any tax returns related to your estate. Bill payment and recordkeeping – A trust company can keep up with all the trust’s bills (household maintenance, medical bills, etc.) and provide statements summarizing receipts, disbursements and the value of assets within the trust. In addition to providing these practical services, a trust company may benefit you in a more intangible way. It’s unfortunate but true that, in many families, dividing up assets can cause conflict and bitter feelings. But when a trust company serves as trustee, it impartially administers distribution of the assets based on the instructions you’ve provided in the trust – helping minimize family disputes over inheritances. If you ever feel like the complexities of wealth management and trust administration are getting to be more than you can handle – or perhaps more than you want to handle – consider contacting a trust company. You might find that it can make your life a lot easier.
