Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas to Begin Sending $25.4 Million in Automatic Refunds to Cook County Homeowners Almost 11,500 property owners who overpaid their First I nstallment taxes will automatically get back $25.4 million in refunds this month, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.

Almost 4,000 refunds go to homeowners who are receiving property tax exemptions. The value of those exemptions is applied to the Second Installment tax bill, reducing the total taxes due.

Pappas has tried to make homeowners aware of potential exemptions as she attends community events throughout Chicago and suburban Cook County.

“The outreach efforts of my office, along with the Black and Latino Houses Matter program, are helping homeowners become more aware of how they can reduce their property tax burden,” Pappas said.

To see if you are receiving a portion of the refunds, visit cookcountytreasurer.com, select the purple box labeled “Your Property Overview” and enter your address.

The refunds, which the Treasurer’s Office will begin issuing this week, include: • 5,137 homeowners who paid their property taxes online or by check will see funds electronically deposited to their bank or credit card accounts totaling $14.9 million • 5,484 homeowners who paid their taxes through a bank/mortgage escrow account will be mailed refund checks totaling $10.1 million • 808 homeowners who paid taxes totaling $412,177 in cash and will be mailed a refund application to ensure the proper party receives the refund Pappas launched the automatic refund program in July 2018.

Since then, 121,000 property owners have received about $82 million in refunds without having to fill out an application.

As a reminder, Second Installment 2020 property taxes are due Friday, Oct. 1.

IL Announces First $24 Million in ‘Back to Business’ Grants Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration on Thursday announced the awarding of the first $24 million in “Back to Business” grants, a program funded with federal relief aid to help businesses recover and reopen from the pandemic.

The announcement took place at a Mexican restaurant in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago, Mi Tierra en la Villita, which was awarded a $150,000 grant.

“This is a tremendous blessing. Like many businesses in our community, we have faced hard times during the pandemic,” said Priscilla Fuentes, whose father owns the restaurant. “My dad, Ezequiel Fuentes, had cut into his personal savings when the pandemic first hit. At times, we barely broke even. But we always felt committed to delivering the food and service our community counts on.”

The Back to Business, or B2B grant program, administered through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, will provide a total of $250 million in aid to small businesses that have experienced losses during the pandemic. The funds come from the federal American Rescue Plan Act and can be used for such things as rehiring staff and paying other operating expenses.

Grant amounts can range from $5,000 to $150,000, depending on the amount of losses a business experienced. Preference is given to businesses with $5 million or less in annual revenue as well as those that did not receive funding under the previous Business Interruption Grant, or BIG program.

“After the success of last year’s Business Interruption Grants, which provided $290 million in

relief to over 9,000 small businesses across our state, it was clear that these investments have had a big impact,” Pritzker said.

Applications for the remaining funds will remain open through Oct. 13. More information about the program and a link to an online application form can be found on the DCEO website.

Of the grants announced Thursday, 81 percent went to businesses that applied to the BIG program but did not receive funding; 71 percent went to businesses in disproportionately impacted areas or low-income zip codes that experienced high rates of COVID-19; 66 percent went to hard-hit industries such as restaurants and taverns, hotels, arts organizations and salons; and just over half went to minority-owned businesses.

To encourage more businesses to apply, Sylvia Garcia, acting director of DCEO, said the agency has recruited a network of “navigators” to help steer businesses through the application process.

“We have teamed up with community groups like Little Village Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and over 100 other community partners to make sure that we’re going door-to-door providing one-onone technical assistance and really getting the support to anyone who needs it to apply for this program,” she said.

She said the community navigators are “instrumental to our equity efforts and connecting with the people who need it most – people of color, rural communities and others that are hard to reach – and making sure this relief goes to those that were hardest hit and those that need the help the most.”

David Simonetti bless the animals presented to him that day. an animal lover himself with a pet menagerie which includes 3 large dogs, and some exotic birds set up in an enclosure he built himself. A few days before, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment is celebrated universally around the globe for love of animals. Fr Dave falls into that category.

Here are some suggestions: • Build your resources. While you’re working, save in tax-advantaged accounts such as your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. In your 401(k), contribute at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. Remember, especially early in your career, time is often your biggest asset.

Be sure to save early, since the longer you wait, the more you’ll need to save to help reach your goals.

• Look for ways to boost retirement income. When transitioning to retirement, you can take steps to align your income with your needs. For example, consider Social Security. You can start collecting it as early as 62, but your monthly payments will be much larger if you can wait until your “full” retirement age, typically between 66 and 67. (Payments will “max out” at age 70.) So, if you have sufficient income from a pension or your 401(k) and other retirement accounts, and you and your spouse are in good health with a family history of longevity, you may consider delaying taking Social Security. You also might want to explore other income-producing vehicles, such as certain annuities that are designed to provide a lifetime income stream.

• Prepare for unexpected costs. During your retirement, you can anticipate some costs, such as housing and transportation, but other expenses are more irregular and can’t always be predicted, such as those connected with health care. If you’ve shopped around for any kind of loan, one of the things you likely noticed is that the credit score a lender pulls seems to be different (sometimes by quite a wide margin) from what you see when tracking your own credit scores. What gives? It comes down to how credit information is reported, which scoring models a lender uses, and how the algorithms work within that scoring model.

Most people know that there are 3 major credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax, and Trans-union. However, do you realize that the scores vary between the 3, sometimes immensely, and for different reasons? This can be a benefit to some consumers in situations where a lender uses a middle score where only 2 of 3 scores are important. It can also be a problem in situations where a lender pulls just one bureau and they happen to pull a report from the bureau reporting negative data. Most lenders in the mortgage world rely on the Fair Isaac, Co. algorithms and resulting scores when pulling credit.

You many know them by FICO scores. The FICO system charges vendors to use their proprietary algorithms, and for that reason many credit monitoring services and credit cards use their own, separate algorithm to generate a score. Algorithms are used by all of the credit scoring models, however each model uses different algorithms that often put weight on different multiple factors that determine a credit score. For example, one algorithm out there will ignore any and all collection accounts with a balance of $250 or less. If a consumer pulled a score through that model they might believe they have

excellent credit, while a lender using the FICO model might see low scores as a result of collection activity. While the algorithms weigh factors differently, they all have some things in common. Of course, an “on time” payment history is very important to all of the scoring models. Having a long credit history, regularly using credit, having various types of credit (mortgage, installment loans, credit cards), and keeping credit balances low compared to credit limits are generally habits that all credit scoring models reward consumers for. Maxed out credit cards, late payments, and major derogatory events like bankruptcy or foreclosure are penalized pretty much across the board as well. FICO scores are one of the major factors in determining what your loan options will be and that includes the interest rates you’ll be offered when applying for a loan. This is why it’s important to understand how the scoring works to avoid any surprises. Tracking your credit on consumer - access scores that you get on free credit monitoring services can be a great gauge of the direction your credit is headed and where you stand, remember the scores your lender will pull are likely going to be a bit different.

Harris Announces Thornton Public Library District to Receive Mentoring Grant Hoping that local students will take advantage of resources at their local library, State Senator Napoleon Harris, III announced the Thornton Public Library District is set to receive $14,000 from the Project Next Generation grant.

“Keeping our students in learning atmospheres and not on the streets will help change the trajectory of their lives,” Harris said. “I strongly support supplying our local libraries with funding to create new resources that engage our students.”

provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

PNG is a mentoring program established by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White to help middle and high school students develop technological skills, achieve success through project-based learning, and gain life skills such as effective communication, goal-setting and conflict resolution.

The secretary of state awarded $530,104 in 2021 PNG grants to 28 public libraries statewide. Grants are awarded to libraries that serve culturally diverse, low-income and underserved populations.
