CC Sheriff Dart, State Sen. Collins Propose Legislation to Ban Ghost Guns Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart and Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Collins proposed legislation today to ban ‘ghost guns,’ which are homemade, untraceable weapons that are increasingly being found by police fighting Chicago area violence. “The rapid proliferation of these weapons is alarming, and they are intentionally being used by individuals who want to thwart investigations – a clear threat to public safety,” Sheriff Dart said. “We must close this legal loophole to give us the tools to try to stop the flow of these weapons.” Ghost guns are homemade firearms without serial numbers. Unlike typical firearms, they can’t be traced by law enforcement to the original purchaser, often a key investigative step. The kits used to build these weapons are available online and are not legally required to have serial numbers, and they can be sold without background checks. The kits can readily become an operable firearm with a few easy-to-find parts and common tools. The number of ghost guns recovered by law enforcement skyrocketed nearly 400 percent nationally between 2016 and 2020, when more than 8,700 were found, according to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “Gun violence is plaguing Illinois’ Black and Brown communities, including those in the 16th senate district,” Sen. Collins said. “The proliferation of guns in our country and in our state drives this problem. Getting non-serialized ghost guns off the streets is a step forward in addressing violence so we can start healing our communities.”
The legislation will ban privately made firearms unless they are registered with the state and affixed with a serial number. The legislation gives a six-month grace period for ghost gun owners to register. The sale of non-serialized gun kits would be banned immediately. A first offense would be a Class A misdemeanor, which carries up to a year in jail. Subsequent offenses would be a Class 3 felony, which carries a five-to-10-year prison sentence. These charges would be in addition to any other offenses an individual may face. “The proliferation of ghost guns in Cook County undermines strong gun violence prevention laws and tireless law enforcement work to keep residents safe,” said Brady President Kris Brown. “The action proposed today will stop these untraceable firearms from flooding the county’s communities, exacerbating the gun violence that already disproportionately affects Illinois’ Black and Brown residents.” Brady is one of four gun violence prevention organizations that support this legislation. The others are Giffords Law Center, Everytown for Gun Safety, and The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. “Ghost guns are a rapidly growing threat that are exacerbating the severe gun violence crisis,” said David Pucino, Senior Staff Attorney at Giffords Law Center. “These products allow traffickers to source untraceable firearms and threaten to undermine Illinois’s strong gun safety laws. This legislation is a bold step towards addressing gun violence by banning these dangerous, untraceable weapons. We thank Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart for his leadership on this important issue.”

Your Relationship to Money NANCY ZEKVELD Ecclesiastes 5:19 “And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life - this is indeed a gift from God.” NLT I am quite certain that you have heard advice when it comes to your weight or dieting issues. Often it is something along the lines of “recognize when you are eating for emotional reasons,” or “you need to understand your relationship with food.” These questions are aimed at helping you address the “WHY” of your challenges when it comes to losing weight. This advice also applies to your finances. The difference between those who have financial problems and those who do not directly correlates to the relationship each has with money. There is some merit to looking into this relationship angle closely because even those who make more run into problems with their finances. It is not simply a matter of making more money. How is it that a single person can make the same salary as a single income family of 5 yet still never have enough money? Your relationship to money should include a sound understanding of why you are making purchases. Do you spend to meet an emotional or social need? Do you understand what a purchase means in terms of personal worth, and how the result of purchases changes the landscape of your finances? It sounds like a lot but can be summarized in two words: Ask Questions.
It is helpful to ask questions about yourself and the reasons you make purchases and also ask questions of those who are selling products and services to you. In this way, you uncover the best use of your money and the habit will help you as your income levels increase so that you do not become the person who makes more money but still has the same financial problems. Asking questions is imperative to the ability to THRIVE under changing financial situations. You should understand how your relationship to money will affect you so you can weather the changes that impact your income now, or when your income goes up or down, or even when you no longer participate in the workforce. A CAP Money management class can help you determine where you are in your personal financial landscape. If it reveals your need for professional assistance in managing your debt, CAP Debt counseling resources are available. Contact Nancy at 708 527 4844 or visit capamerica.org/debthelp Nancy is the South Suburbs CAP Debt Center manager in partnership with Covenant Fellowship Church in South Holland. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are trying to offer the best contract on a home we fell in love with, in order to get our offer accepted. Should we waive the home inspection, so we have a better chance to get our offer accepted? Answer: NO. Did I make that clear? NO. Under no circumstance should you waive the inspection contingency. A home inspection covers the major components of the building: The Roof, plumbing, structural and electrical. If you accept the home without an inspection, this could cost you thousands of dollars. If the seller does not understand this, then maybe you should keep on looking. If another buyer waives the inspection contingency, then let them be reckless. Don’t flirt with a potential catastrophe! Other inspection items that need to be checked by a licensed inspector are well water and septic systems, if applicable. The well water is what you will be drinking and bathing in. Wells and
septic system repairs can be very costly and could have serious ramifications for your health. Have them checked! Did the inspector see signs of mold? Hire a mold remediator. They can determine the severity of the mold and the cost to remove it. Mold can cause major health issues. Mold can grow in places that are unseen. You need a pro to check this out. Another contingency that should not be removed is the Financing contingency. Make sure your offer is contingent upon you being able to be approved for a loan. Just because you were pre-approved, it does not mean you will get the loan. Failure to keep this contingency could cost you your earnest money deposit. Earnest money can run from $1000-$10,000. Don’t turn your dream home into your nightmare! Get the home professionally inspected!
Navarro Farm: ‘A Place to Grow’ for those with Special needs Gathering supplies in the tool shed at Frankfort’s Navarro Farm, the small group talked excitedly amongst themselves. One man made the rounds, giving hugs and pointing to where a bee had previously landed on his forehead. Group leader Amy Stanislawski announced their first activity: picking tomatoes. Grabbing their tools and towing a wagon for their haul, the group set out on their adventure, passing the vineyard and small orchard of apple, pear, peach and plum trees, making their way down the stone pathway to the 84 planting beds, where they’d get to work harvesting vegetables and pulling weeds. The farm was humming with activity. Nearby, five Nigerian dwarf goats darted around their pen while nearly 40 chickens clucked from their coop. Sherri Navarro, who owns the farm with her husband, Damion, looked around the 5-acre property, still amazed at the transformation. Last September, the couple purchased the farm intending to tear down the barn and erect a pole barn for their company, NES Environmental. That plan was quickly scratched. A friend suggested they plant a communal
garden for special needs kids. The Navarros’ 17-year-old son, Carter, was born with Down syndrome, and the Navarros recognized the potential benefits of such a project. And then a light bulb went off for Sherri. “I said, ‘Damion! A place to grow!’” The phrase, which ultimately became their slogan, meant not only a place to grow food, but to grow friendships and learning experiences for those with special needs. “And we took that idea and started running — and haven’t stopped,” Sherri said. Today, the nonprofit provides a farming experience for children and young adults with special needs. Through the farming program, visitors, who are called “farmers,” plant and harvest all the food grown, including peppers, onions, eggplant, pumpkins, fruit and much more. They care for the goats and chickens and harvest eggs. All the food is either sold at their farm stand, Carter’s Corner, or donated to local restaurants. Bee boxes have also been installed for honey, and Avery’s Flower Farm grows and cuts flowers in a garden on the property. The project is a big endeavor for a couple with no farming experience.
But through word of mouth and the generosity of volunteers — many of whom are former special education teachers, occupational therapists, farmers and master gardeners — the program and offerings continue to grow. Kim Warning’s son, Steven, is part of the program, which she said has been “amazing” for her son’s socialization skills. “I’ve never seen him so invested in a place,” she said from inside the renovated barn that also serves as a break room — complete with a fullsize arcade game, craft supplies and tables. Program Coordinator June Hoops dubbed Warning one of the “core moms” who’s always willing to lend a hand. “When you have someone doing anything for your kid and making their life better, you’ll do anything for them,” Warning said. “It’s like a family here.” The farming program is offered a couple times a week, with two sessions a day. The program is open to those 14 and older with special needs. Participants must meet certain criteria, which can be found online at navarrofarm.org. Because transition services and programs for students receiving special education typically end
at age 22, Navarro Farm, located at 22155 S. 104th Ave., offers a unique experience for those who otherwise wouldn’t have many opportunities to socialize. Aside from the farming experience, participants also make crafts and play sports. Kickball is their favorite. And on Friday nights, the farm often offers social events such as barbecues and movie nights. Monthly events, including a Fall Harvest Party, Friendsgiving and Visit with Santa, are planned through the year. The major fundraiser — the Navarro Farm Gala — was Oct. 9. For more information on the events, visit the Navarro Farm Facebook page. Seeing the impact the farm has had in just a short time, the Navarros hope to expand — not just their program offerings but the farm itself. Plans are in the works for a greenhouse so the farmers can continue growing and harvesting through the winter. One day, the couple hopes to build housing at the farm for those with special needs, complete with bike paths and other amenities, creating a community for the residents. “There’s endless opportunity,” Sherri said.

“I don’t get mad. I just get even.” I can’t remember if I’ve ever said it. But I’ve certainly felt it! There’s a powerful impulse in all of us to strike back, to even the score. God created us with thirst for justice and we crave to see wrongs set right. But our hunger for revenge also reveals how sin has distorted and twisted our wiring. Our fallen impulse is to take matters into our own hands to settle the score for me and mine. So the Apostle Paul’s words go against the grain: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them” (Romans 12:14, ESV). What does it mean to bless those who wrong you? In the Bible to bless someone means to ‘speak good’ over his or her life. When God blesses us, he accomplishes the good he speaks into our lives! He has power in his voice, remember? In the same way, God not only calls us to speak good over those who have wronged us but also to do good to those who have wronged us. It’s not just hard to live the way Jesus calls us to. It’s impossible. It’s one thing to just not curse someone or get revenge. It’s quite another to actively bless them. With God, however, all things are possible. Remember what Christ has done for us. He died for us so that we can experience God’s undeserved blessing instead of his curse. Ask Christ to do in you and through you what you can’t do yourself. Cry out for his power to bless those who wrong you. You may not feel like blessing them. But when you step out in faith to obey Jesus, he changes your heart in the process. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Say I saw it in The Shopper
YOU’RE INVITED
Buyer’s Love Letters MIKE BUDER Potential buyers in very competitive real estate markets have been writing letters to home sellers for years in an effort to gain an edge over competing offers, many buyers desperate to land a seller’s acceptance have asked their agent to attached these letters to the purchase offer…It’s the perfect house in the right neighborhood, so the competition is stiff, but you’ve absolutely got to have it. You make your bid, offering more than the list price because that’s how insane the real estate market has been this past year, and then you sit down and write a love letter… ”We cannot express to you how much we love your home”, says an internet letter writing- primer template that includes tidbits about 20 month old Jimmy, “A wild, fun, curious boy” who’s going to love the backyard”, while family felines Bubba and Mr. Whiskers “will love basking in all the natural light.” This practice has always struck me as creepy – a fawning essay contest in the dream house sweepstakes. Lately, many of these love letters have become disingenuous and are generating their own hate mail. They’re under attack because temptation on the part of buyers to portray themselves as similar to sellers, and likely to perpetuate their values and sensibilities. Some of these love letters have included family photos and even videos. This practice can create a very slippery slope if a seller bases a decision on a bidder’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status or familial status. These letters can reveal information about a buyer that should not be considered by the seller in choosing among competing offers. A seller’s assumptions about a bidder could run a foul of the law. Applying these assumptions (whether intentional or not) can result in
unlawful discrimination. I have seen people put their kids on the playsets in the backyards of properties and then add the photo to their love letter, saying, they’re so looking forward to little Billy or little Sally “enjoying this wonderful backyard”. Some might argue that homeowners who built a playground for their kids have a right to wish that another set of kids will enjoy the amenities. Another buyer could go through a property and notice something on the wall that’s religious and make comments in their letter about it trying to connect with the sellers. These are the things that potentially could turn what should be nothing more than a business transaction into something else. This can also lead to second guessing from losing bidders who demand to know…”Why didn’t you choose me? We offered the same price or more with better terms, and you didn’t choose me?” My advice to buyers who are bidding for a property…nothing works better than to come in “high, quick and clean,” meaning to offer a lot of money that’s quick on the table, without contingencies that would delay the closing. We living in a multicultural society, and while we, as Realtors, are barred from showing references…sellers may not feel the same way and could have hidden agendas…I think buyer letters to the sellers should not be used. Speaking Of Seniors
Financial Advice Column
Short-term investments offer liquidity – and more if you cash it out early, you’ll lose some of the interest payments. Diversification – If your portfolio consists largely of stocks and stock-based ETFs and mutual funds, you could take a hit, at least temporarily, during periods of market downturns, which are a normal part of the investment world. But a diversified portfolio, containing both long- and short-term investments, may hold up better during periods of market volatility. That’s because the short-term vehicles we’ve looked at are typically going to be far less affected by market movements, if they’re affected at all. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification by itself can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Protection of longer-term investments – If you were to face an unexpected expense, such as the need for a major home or car repair, how would you pay for it? Without any liquid reserves, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments, such as your 401(k) and IRA. But by doing so, you could incur taxes and penalties – and, perhaps even more important, you’d be removing resources from accounts designed to help you achieve a comfortable retirement. With enough short-term investments in place, though, you can avoid touching these long-term accounts. As you can see, you can benefit significantly by adding some short-term investment vehicles to your portfolio. They could make a big difference in your ability to meet your financial goals. My Bad MRI Experience WOODROW WILCOX
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Generally speaking, investing is a long-term process. You invest in your IRA and 401(k) to reach a long-term goal – retirement. You may invest in a 529 education savings plan for many years to reach another long-term goal – college for your children. But is there also a place in your portfolio for shorter-term investments? In a word, yes. You have three good reasons for owning short-term investments: liquidity, diversification and protection of longer-term investments. Let’s look at all three: Liquidity – For many people, the COVID-19 pandemic brought home the need to have ready access to cash, and short-term investment vehicles are typically liquid. Still, some are more liquid than others, and you’ll want to know the differences right from the start. Probably the most liquid vehicle you could have isn’t an investment at all, but rather a simple savings or checking account. But you likely could earn much more interest from a high-yield online savings account without sacrificing much, if any, liquidity. Money market accounts are also highly liquid, but they may carry minimum balance requirements. Other short-term investments may be less liquid, but that may not be a major concern if you don’t need the money immediately. For example, you could purchase a type of mutual fund known as an ultra short-term bond fund that invests in longer-term bonds due to mature in less than a year, so you could receive the benefit of the higher interest rates typically provided by these bonds. You could choose to partially or entirely liquidate your bond fund at any time, but it may take several days for the sale to go through, since the shares in the fund need to be sold. You could also invest in a three-month certificate of deposit (CD), but

Life has “ups” and “downs”. On, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, I was celebrating the fact that The Washington Times (in DC) had published my letter to the editor in which I explained proven problems with the covid vaccines that were dangerous to some people – especially young men. My point was that the presidential order to vaccinate all personnel in the armed forces could actually weaken our armed forces. Then, on Thursday, October 7, I was taken to a hospital emergency ward by ambulance. I cooperated with all the tests until I was put in the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine. They told me that I would be in it for 25 minutes. But just before I was put into the machine, a glass or clear plastic plate was put on my face. When I was pushed into the MRI, the plate pressed down and snapped. It smashed my nose and made it difficult to breath. I realized that I could not breathe freely. I started hitting the machine and yelling to get me out of it. After that, I refused to use the MRI. I believe that MRI machine is dangerous and should be junked. Here is why. Any machine that prevents someone from breathing freely is dangerous. When a person can’t breathe freely, an alarm is triggered in mind and body to fight to breathe freely in order to survive. I don’t know the medical term for it. I just call it “survival panic”. The survival panic can lead to a stroke or heart attack. On June 28, 2020, The New York Times reported 70 cases in which police used a device or technique that prevented someone in custody from breathing freely. George Floyd was not the only person who died because someone prevented him from breathing. On July 15, 2012, James Brown died in police custody after repeatedly telling police that he could not breathe. In that case, the police told him that medication that they gave him should calm him. He did not need medication. He did not need to be calmed. He needed to breathe freely. When I was in the hospital, a doctor asked me if I would try the MRI machine again if she gave me something to calm me. “Absolutely not!” I told her. I did not need calming. The problem was that the normal and ordinary use of the machine prevented me from breathing freely. No one can hold their breathe for 25 minutes. The machine’s restricting the breathing of the patient can
cause “survival panic” which can lead to a stroke or heart attack. IT WAS THE BADLY DESIGNED MRI MACHINE THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I would like to know how many patients have had a stroke or heart attack while in that model or any model of MRI machines. I believe that the MRI machine in that hospital could easily harm or kill patients. I hope this article leads to an investigation by state and federal officials which will result in such badly designed medical machines being banned. I hope that Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance companies refuse to pay for the use of such machines and that hospitals and other medical firms are barred from charging a bill to any patient for the use of such an MRI machine. I hope that lawyers will start to sue the manufacturers of those machines and the medical firms that use such badly designed machines that risk the health and lives of patients. I criticize the managers of that hospital for not testing the machine before buying it. Don’t believe the manufacturer’s sales pitch. Test the machine! People test drive a car before buying it, don’t they? Why wouldn’t a hospital manager use 12 to 20 staff or volunteers to test a machine for how it treats a patient? Certainly if 20 experienced that model of the MRI machine as a patient, one or two of them would have described how it prevented the patient from breathing freely. I don’t have an unusually large head. My head size is average. But I could not breathe freely in that machine. According to the New York Times report about 70 similar “I can’t breathe” cases, the police were using a mask on James Brown. He could not breathe freely. He told the police that. They gave him a drug to calm him. He could not breathe. He died. He did not need a drug to calm him. He needed to breathe freely. When a doctor in the hospital asked me if I would try the MRI machine again if she gave me a medicine to calm me, I wanted to scream at her that the problem was the MRI machine. I did not need to be calmed with drugs. I needed to be protected from that badly designed MRI machine and the people at the hospital who wanted me to use it and risk my life. But I was polite and did not scream at the doctor. Instead, I wrote this article to warn others about the dangers of badly designed MRI machines.

The Cook County Jail’s Chess Team finished 3rd in its division during the championship round of the largest international chess competition for detained individuals, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today. Hosted by Cook County Jail and sanctioned by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners featured 41 teams from jails and prisons in 30 countries. The Cook County Jail team finished 2nd in group play in the first day of the competition on Wednesday and was one of twelve teams to advance to Thursday’s championship round. During Thursday’s play, teams were divided into two groups of 6 teams. Cook County finished in 3rd place in its division, which was won by a team from Zimbabwe. Mongolia was the winner of the other division, and during a match early Friday morning, Mongolia defeated Zimbabwe to become the overall winner. “I’ve always been a fan of chess, and I know how much time and effort it takes to play at the level our team exhibited this week,” Sheriff Dart said. “Our team should be incredibly proud of their accomplishment, and for the strong foundation they have built for future international competitions.” This was the sixth international competition
that the Cook County Jail team has participated in since the chess program was launched in 2012. Since then, the program has hosted numerous chess dignitaries over the years, including chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov. In March 2020, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office signed an agreement with FIDE – the governing body of international chess competition – formalizing the organization’s logistical support of future international online matches through their Social Service Commission. In turn, Cook County Jail will serve as the hub for FIDE-led International Chess for Freedom events. Since its inception, approximately 1,200 individuals have participated in the chess program while in custody at the Jail. Program participants practice weekly, and the eight players who represented Cook County Jail in this tournament were chosen based on skill. “It is gratifying to see a program that started at Cook County Jail expand to include literally dozens of countries and hundreds of players from all around the world, and we are thankful for the partnership we have with FIDE,” Sheriff Dart said. “Programs like this are so important because studies show they can make jails and prisons safer places overall. This competition not only serves that goal, but also enables people from all over the world to share an experience they enjoy.”

Clown A clown is a person who wears a unique makeupface and flamboyant costume, performing comedy in a state of open-mindedness all while using physical comedy. The most ancient clowns have been found in the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt, around 2400 BC. The traditional clown character developed out of the zanni rustic fool characters of the early modern commedia dell’arte, which were themselves directly based on the rustic fool characters of ancient Greek and Roman theatre.
