Giving and receiving a handmade gift continues to be a tradition that we all treasure and share. This November, artisans aged 16 and up are invited to participate in a two-part seasonal ceramic workshop guided by South Shore Arts instructors. Participants will learn how to create small vessel and slab-rolled seasonal ornaments. There will be a variety of culture-rich and diverse templates to choose from to provide inspiration to students. During this two-session workshop, students will practice wedging, pinching, coiling, scoring, slipping, waxing, and glazing. All materials are included. Artworks will be glaze-fired and ready for pick-up after December 19, just in time for the Holidays! Fee: $80 Workshops will be conducted on Saturday, November 13, from 11-2pm and Saturday, December 10, from 11-1pm. With winter right around the corner, younger artists can creatively prepare for a warm cup of cocoa by making their very own personalized ceramic mugs. South Shore Arts invites children ages 9-15 to sign-up for a two-part ceramic workshop where they will

create a hand-built mug with personal flair. Mugs will be both bisque-fired and glaze-fired, ensuring that kids will end up with a handmade treasure which will be both waterproof and food-safe. Fee: $65 Workshops will be conducted Saturday, November 13, from 2:30-4:30pm and Saturday, December 10, from 2-3pm. Each workshop will take place at South Shore Arts Munster location on the lower level of the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster, 1040 Ridge Road. Workshops will be conducted in-person and will strictly adhere to current CDC precautions. Proof of valid COVID-19 vaccination required for participants 12 years old and over. DOL, Justice Reach Settlements with Facebook Resolving Claims of Discrimination Against US Workers, Alleged Regulation Violations The U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Justice today announced separate settlement agreements with Facebook regarding its use of the permanent labor certification program, also known as PERM. The Department of Justice’s settlement resolves its claims that Facebook routinely refused to recruit, consider, or hire U.S. workers – which includes U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, asylees, refugees, and lawful permanent residents – for positions it had reserved for temporary visa holders in connection with the PERM process. The Department of Labor’s settlement resolves issues it separately identified through audit examinations of Facebook’s recruitment activities related to PERM applications filed by Facebook with the department’s Employment and Training Administration. Specifically, Facebook filed its applications with ETA’s Office of Foreign Labor Certification. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit in December 2020 against Facebook alleging that – from at least Jan. 1, 2018, until at least Sept. 18, 2019 – Facebook routinely reserved jobs for temporary visa holders through the PERM process. The lawsuit specifically alleged that, in contrast to its standard recruitment practices, Facebook used recruiting methods designed to deter U.S. workers from applying to certain positions, such as requiring that applicants submit applications by mail only; refusing to consider U.S. workers who applied to the positions; and hiring only temporary visa holders. The lawsuit alleges Facebook’s hiring process for these positions intentionally discriminated against U.S. workers because of their citizenship or immigration status, in violation of the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The INA generally prohibits employers from discriminating against workers because of their citizenship or immigration status. In early 2021, the Labor Department initiated audit examinations of Facebook’s pending PERM applications to determine compliance with regulatory requirements. OFLC audits identified potential regulatory recruitment violations and sought additional information from Facebook to confirm that Facebook followed all applicable regulatory requirements regarding the posting and advertisement requirements for these positions. Under the Department of Justice’s settlement, Facebook will pay a civil penalty of $4.75 million to the United States, pay up to $9.5 million to eligible victims of Facebook’s alleged discrimination and train its employees on the INA’s antidiscrimination requirements. In addition, Facebook will be required to conduct more expansive advertising and recruitment for its job opportunities for all PERM positions, accept electronic resumes or applications from all U.S. workers who apply and take other steps to ensure that its recruitment for PERM positions closely matches its standard recruitment practices. Today’s civil penalty and back pay fund represent the largest fine and monetary award that the division has recovered in the 35-year history of the INA’s anti-discrimination provision. “Facebook is not above the law, and must

comply with our nation’s federal civil rights laws, which prohibit discriminatory recruitment and hiring practices,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Companies cannot set aside certain positions for temporary visa holders because of their citizenship or immigration status. This settlement reflects the Civil Rights Division’s commitment to holding employers accountable and eradicating discriminatory employment practices.” Under the Department of Labor’s OFLC settlement, Facebook will conduct additional notice and recruitment for U.S. workers and will be subject to ongoing audits to ensure its compliance with applicable regulations. “This settlement is an important step forward and means that U.S. workers will have a fair chance to learn about and apply for Facebook’s job opportunities,” said the U.S. Department of Labor’s Solicitor Seema Nanda. “No matter an employer’s size or reach, the Department of Labor is committed to vigorously enforcing the law.” The Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section is responsible for enforcing the anti-discrimination provision of the INA. The statute prohibits citizenship or immigration status and national origin discrimination in hiring, firing, or recruitment or referral for a fee; unfair documentary practices; and retaliation and intimidation. Applicants or employees who believe they were discriminated against based on their citizenship, immigration status, or national origin in hiring, firing, recruitment, or during the employment eligibility verification process (Form I-9 and E-Verify); or subjected to retaliation, can file a charge. The public also can contact IER’s worker hotline at 1-800-255-7688; call IER’s employer hotline at 1-800-255-8155 (1-800-237-2515, TTY for hearing impaired); email IER@usdoj. gov; sign up for a free webinar; or visit IER’s English and Spanish websites. Subscribe to GovDelivery to receive updates from IER. ETA’s Office of Foreign Labor Certification provides national leadership and policy guidance to carry out the responsibilities of the Secretary of Labor under the INA, as amended, concerning the admission of foreign workers to the U.S. for employment. A permanent labor certification allows an employer to hire a foreign worker to work permanently in the U.S. In most instances, before the U.S. employer can submit an immigration petition to the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the employer must obtain a certified labor certification application from OFLC. The Secretary of Labor must certify to the USCIS that there are not sufficient U.S. workers able, willing, qualified and available to accept the job opportunity in the area of intended employment and that employment of the foreign worker will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly employed U.S. workers. Refer suspected violations related to the PERM labor certification process to the OFLC at Plc.atlanta@dol.gov.

KING’S COMMUNITY CHURCH

RICHARD ZEKVELD There are many reasons we might have a hard time with Christ’s radical call to love, bless, pray for and forgive. Here’s one of them: maybe it feels like Jesus is throwing justice under the bus, that justice doesn’t matter, that Jesus is okay with leaving wrongs unaddressed. You feel like the child who spends hours constructing a Lego masterpiece. When she snaps the final piece in place, her brother smashes it. The builder hollers for justice, expecting mom to rush in and administer it. Instead, mom scolds her brother that what he did wasn’t very nice. When he utters a quick, mechanical “Sorry,” her mother instructs her to forgive. That’s it. When it happens again, the child has zero confidence that mom, the one authorized to dispense justice, will do so. So she takes matters into her own hands. She smashes her brother’s favorite remote-control car to bits. Balance restored. Is our God like this mom? Absolutely not! He is passionate about justice, determined to right all that is wrong. Beginning with us. See both God’s love and justice at the cross. There, Jesus took our place as wrongdoers to satisfy God’s justice that God might forgive and receive us. Further, God begins to right all that is wrong within us, by the power of his Spirit. Finally, the Jesus who cried out on the cross, “Father, forgive them!” is also the Jesus of Psalm 72:4,14 (NIV84): “He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; he will crush the oppressor… He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.” In addition, God calls on humans in authority to execute justice. He holds them accountable when they do not. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Realtor vs FSBO MIKE BUDER If you’re looking to maximize your sale and minimize your effort, you should be working with an experienced Realtor. In a seller’s market like today’s, it can be tempting to list your house on your own – known as “For Sale By Owner” (FSBO). But the truth is, a real estate professional can save you time and money by managing every step of the process, from pricing your home to reviewing documents and handling negotiations. Before you decide to try to sell your house on your own, here are some reasons why working with an experienced agent is your best bet to maximize the sale of your home. #1. First impressions are everything…an experienced agent knows how to make a great one. Prepping a house for sale requires a fair amount of time and effort. Doing it right, so it stands out, takes expertise and an understanding of what today’s buyers are looking for. Your time and money are important so you don’t want to waste either and an experienced Realtor can make sure you don’t invest in the wrong things. #2. Realtors have tools to maximize the number of views your home gets. Put plainly, the more buyers that view your house, the better your return will be. In our current market, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) data shows that MLS listed homes are receiving 3.8 more offers on average, per sale, nationally. Realtors have more tools at their disposal, from social media to agency resources. Leveraging these tools and your agent’s experience will ensure your home is viewed by more prospective buyers and usually boost your sale price as well. #3. Your Realtor can also save you time and unnecessary risk by taking the guesswork out of navigating all the required

documentation. This is where an experienced agent can truly shine. They’ve been through the process enough (including recent changes) and can be your guide to avoid any costly mistakes. #4. Your Realtor will be an expert negotiator and your advocate. In addition to their experience navigating the sale, your agent understands how to negotiate every aspect of the deal. They also know all the parties that will be involved with the sale, including: the buyer, who wants to best deal possible. The buyer’s agent, who will use their expertise to advocate on behalf of the buyer. The home inspection company, which works for the buyer and will almost always find concerns with the house, and the appraiser, who assesses the property’s value to protect the lender. A Realtor relies on their experience and training to make the right moves during the negotiation. They’ll know what levers to pull, how to address each individual’s concerns and when you may want to get a second opinion. In today’s market, if you decide to venture out as a “For Sale By Owner” (FSBO) you’ll need to be prepared to have these conversations on your own. Selling a house take time, effort and expertise… Don’t go it alone. Work with an experienced Realtor, so you have an expert on your side to make the most of your sale. Real Estate Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Realtors tell stories of haunted houses. Have you had any experiences? Answer: This story is from a realtor who used to work in our office: This house, also vacant when I listed it, suffered from a dark and tragic history. One family lived in the house for many years, until there was no one left to occupy it. I had to enter the home on several occasions to check on it. Each time there was a strange energy that gave me chills. Each time, I was in and out of that home in minutes. One afternoon, I stood in the home’s dining room on the first floor, while a curious buyer explored a bedroom off to my right. Greg, who volunteered to accompany me that day, stood in the foyer near the living room. I heard the sound of heavy footsteps upstairs, even though I knew no one was up there. As I listened intently, the footsteps moved to the top of the enclosed stairs, and started down… clomp, clomp, clomp…toward the dining room. I experienced a moment of panic, wondering what my buyer must be thinking. However, glancing at her, she seemed oblivious. Greg did not look my way either. Apparently, I was the only one who could hear the footsteps as they descended. Freakishly, the sound grew louder,

and it seemed to be moving faster as it neared the bottom of the stairs. I watched, fascinated, to see who, or what, approached. A shadowy figure appeared at the base of the stairs, crossed the dining room in front of me, and passed by Greg in the foyer before disappearing. As the figure traversed the rooms, the sound of footsteps accompanied it. Well, that ought to discourage the buyer! I thought. But she didn’t notice. She never said a word about the sounds or the shadow, choosing to pass on purchasing the house due to the extensive repairs it needed. The house eventually sold. The buyers’ agent and I discussed the house at length, and I shared my experiences. His clients bought the property anyway and moved in. A short time later they moved out and had the house torn down. Mrvan Letter to EPA on Discharges Today, Congressman Frank J. Mrvan released a letter he sent to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in response to the recent discharges into Lake Michigan, via Burns Waterway, from the U.S. Steel facility. Specifically, the letter recognized that a “balance that must be maintained between Northwest Indiana’s industrial economy and its rich biodiversity, including the Lake Michigan ecosystem,” and that it is “imperative that the protection of workers’ health and safety must be as important as protecting our environment.” The letter also states, “As we move forward, simply mitigating environmental violations after the incident is not sustainable and cannot continue to be the norm. More must be done to prevent discharges that are in violation of existing permits into our precious waterways, and I encourage the EPA and IDEM to do your utmost to be vigilant and ensure that the operations and maintenance plans outlined in the consent decree are fully adhered to and implemented.” The text of the complete letter is below and a pdf is available here. I write today to share with you my concerns regarding recent discharges into Lake Michigan, via Burns Waterway, stemming from the U.S. Steel – Midwest Plant outflow. Within the span of two weeks, two separate discharges have necessitated at points the closure of beaches within the Indiana Dunes National Park and local municipalities, the closure of a water intake facility, and investigations by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). More troubling, these discharges happened nearly a month after the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana approved a revised consent decree relative to discharge violations that occurred in April 2017. The consent decree references the implementation of operation and maintenance plans related to the facility’s wastewater infrastructure, developed by U.S. Steel, which the U.S.

QUESTIONS:

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and IDEM did not initially approve, in part, based upon the volume of public comments. The plans ultimately approved by the regulatory agencies, as stated in the consent decree, were updated to include additional operational procedures aimed at avoiding and minimizing spills from the facility’s treatment plants, among other items, and U.S. Steel opted to begin complying voluntarily; however, the consent decree documents numerous violations involving discharges into Burns Waterway between late 2018 through the end of 2019. In August 2019, the government noted that U.S. Steel experienced additional issues with oil sheens appearing in outflows, among other issues. While I appreciate the dedication of the plaintiff agencies and respective staff to develop both monetary and nonmonetary requirements to be imposed as a result of the 2017 incident, what is concerning is the repeated discharge of substances into Burns Waterway, which flows directly into Lake Michigan, that continue today and that require investigation. As the federal Member representing Indiana’s First Congressional District, I recognize the balance that must be maintained between Northwest Indiana’s industrial economy and its rich biodiversity, including the Lake Michigan ecosystem. It is also imperative that the protection of workers’ health and safety must be as important as protecting our environment. As we move forward, simply mitigating environmental violations after the incident is not sustainable and cannot continue to be the norm. More must be done to prevent discharges that are in violation of existing permits into our precious waterways, and I encourage the EPA and IDEM to do your utmost to be vigilant and ensure that the operations and maintenance plans outlined in the consent decree are fully adhered to and implemented. I appreciate your serious attention to this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you wish to further discuss.

Say I saw it in The Shopper

October 27, 2021

Rine Boyer’s “What Just Happened?” exhibit coming to SSC’s Thiel Gallery The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present an exhibition entitled “What Just Happened?” by figurative artist Rine Boyer. The exhibition will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery from October 21 – November 7, 2021. During what felt like the depths of the pandemic – when everything in Chicago was dark, cold, and snowy – Boyer decided to try and capture it mostly for her own sanity. Her life, like many others, had become monotonous. Each day she did the same things, saw the same group of people, and inhabited the same spaces, for months on end. Everyone aside from a few family members and friends seemed to evaporate into an idea of a person only to be seen digitally or in my mind’s eye. Captured on plexiglass, a material found in any space essential enough to stay open, figures based on protesters vanish and reappear into each other as if they are figments of the imagination. Sometimes a shadowy outline of a nearby

figure is reflected and other times it disappears into incomprehensible lines. Behind these standing figures are portraits of close friends and family and animated scenes of life in isolation. Rine Boyer is a Chicago-based painter and artist-in-residence of Zhou B Art Center. She has exhibited her work widely and has been the subject of many international articles. Boyer’s work is rich with nuance and layers of symbolism; the vivid colors she utilizes point towards things that lay beyond the physical while the repetition of subtle shapes pay homage to the individual and collective. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the fourth floor and is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. Speaking Of Seniors

Open Enrollment Time WOODROW WILCOX October 15 through December 7 is the “OPEN ENROLLEMENT” period for seniors on Medicare this year. There are other “OPEN ENROLLMENT” periods for the Affordable Care Act and other things. The one for seniors on Medicare refers to the time of the year in which seniors can switch from one Medicare Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan to another starting the following January first. Medicare supplement policies can be changed any time of the year. It is only Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans) and Medicare Advantage plans that need to be switched during the “OPEN ENROLLMENT” period. There are a few exceptions to this restriction. The exceptions accommo-

date very unusual circumstances over which a senior citizen on Medicare has no control. So, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, contact your insurance agent to get an appointment to review your options. Your needs may have changed. Another company might offer you a better or more affordable plan. Once December 7 has passed, you will not be able to consider making a change until the next year. If you are one of our clients or if you want to become one of our clients, phone 219-7367800 or 800-821-0604 to make an appointment to review your current plan and consider your options.

The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) released the following statement in response to the recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve booster shots of the Moderna and Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) COVID-19 vaccines for certain individuals, including residents and health care workers in long term care. The following statement is attributable to Dr. David Gifford, chief medical officer of AHCA/ NCAL: “Once again, we appreciate the FDA and CDC for thoroughly examining the data and following the science to help protect Americans, including our nation’s most vulnerable, from COVID-19.

All long term care residents and staff members will now be eligible to receive a booster shot thanks to these expanded recommendations. Additionally, the ability to mix-and-match vaccines for the booster dose will make it easier for long term care facilities to swiftly access these vaccines for their residents and staff. “The rollout of the Pfizer booster shot has gone incredibly well in long term care, and we are confident that adding Moderna and Johnson and Johnson into the mix will catapult our efforts. We appreciate the partnership of federal and state governments as well as long term care pharmacies and other vaccine providers to make these vaccination efforts in nursing homes and assisted living communities efficient and successful.”

In September, the BNI jazz band performed at the school’s 100th anniversary Centennial celebration and the mariachi band performed at Maywood Elementary School in Hammond as part of National Hispanic Month. “We are always willing to be part of our community’s activities as an outreach from our school,” said BNI band director Rocco Carioto.

Protect Your Financial Info Online SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’re an investor, you probably enjoy the convenience of managing your accounts online. But you’ll also want to make sure that you’re not making it convenient for hackers, “phishers” and others with bad intentions to gain the same access. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to protect your privacy. Here are a few suggestions offered by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission: Use a strong password or passphrase. You’ll want to pick a password that would be virtually impossible for anyone to guess, employing capital and lowercase letters, plus symbols and numbers. Of course, you’ll want to record the password in a secure place so you won’t forget it. Instead of using a password, you may have the option of choosing a passphrase, which contains a series of words strung together. You’ll want to avoid phrases taken from popular culture or that are otherwise commonly used. And it’s also a good idea not to use phrases containing your name, birthday or other personal identifiers. Activate your account alerts. When you turn on your account alerts, you’ll receive text messages or emails notifying you of certain activities, such as account logins, failed account login attempts, personal information changes, money transfers, adding or deleting of external financial accounts, and more. These alerts can help you monitor your accounts for fraud and verify your own moves, as well. Avoid using public computers to access investment accounts. If you’re at a hotel or

library, try to avoid the temptation to use the computer to check in on your investments. But if you do use a public computer, at least take proper precautions. For starters, don’t leave data on a screen and walk away, even for a moment. And when you’re finished with the computer, log out of your account to end the online session. You may also want to change any password you used. Ignore suspicious links. Be suspicious of emails or text messages containing links claiming to be connected to your investment accounts. These links could take you to websites designed to solicit sensitive account information, which could then be used for financial or identity theft. Even if the link seems to be coming from a business you know, you’ll want to be quite cautious – experienced “phishers” can now create websites or online documents that look real. And keep in mind that legitimate investment firms will not ask you to divulge personal information without going through the password or two-step authentication protocols already described. The ability to connect with your investment accounts online can be extremely useful to you – and you’ll feel more comfortable about these interactions if you know you’ve done all you can to safeguard your information.
