A TRIBUTE TO TOM AND LOIS CORNWELL: The Calumet City couple who passed away this past summer with in two months of each other (she was 96 he was 93) are pictured here with Chris Martin of Calumet City State Farm. Both Chris and the Cornwells are/were members of the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce. Tom was a longtime State Farm agent in Calumet City and when he retired some years ago, Chris (a former school teacher) bought the Calumet City State Farm from Tom. Tom and Lolis were longtime chamber and Calumet City cheerleaders. They are sorely missed by all who knew and loved them! ***

*** THERE IS A NEED! That is what Cam Sanchez, a 17 year old senior at TF South High School found out when he organized a food basket giveaway on Saturday October 24, 2020. The food giveaway was organized around Lansing’s First United Methodist Church using volunteers from the church along with Cam’s friends from TF to help out. Starting at 11 a.m. that morning the plan was to give food away until 5 p.m. As it turned out all 1,092 boxes and some 30,000 pounds of food had been given away by 2 p.m. The food was delivered by semi truck unpacked and distributed. The giveaway began a month earlier in a smaller way, but the need was apparent to Cam and his volunteers which included Rich Dust, a retired teacher and coach at TF South and First Methodist Church Pastor David Price. Food scarcity is usually associated with fairly affluent suburbs like Lansing, but this group of volunteers found out that is not the case. Plans are underway for another giveaway in the near future to coincide with Thanksgiving.

As to the success of the venture, Cal Sanchez gives credit to God, “who is making it happen!”

Andre Nauta will be missed by all who knew and loved him! May he rest in peace.

South Suburban College Paralegal Program to host Virtual Open House South Suburban College is hosting a Virtual Open House for its Paralegal Program on Thursday, December 10th at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. The Paralegal Program is offering an entry level class in the Spring 2021 Semester at SSC. Virtual Open House attendees will access the ZOOM link through ssc.edu/info and be informed about an exciting career pathway with a significant occupational growth outlook.

Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/Legal Assistant curriculum including a 60-hour Associate Degree program and a 39-hour Certificate, both designed to prepare students to become highly trained paralegals and legal assistants.

Ideas for Thanking Your Family It’s almost Thanksgiving. And although 2020 may have been a difficult year for you, as it has been for many people, you can probably still find things for which you can be thankful – such as your family. How can you show your appreciation for your loved ones?

SSC to Host Forklift Operator Training at Oak Forest Center Virtual Family Reading Night South Suburban College’s Adult Volunteer Literacy Program is hosting a virtual Family Reading Night event on Wednesday, November 18th beginning at 6:00 p.m. live from the South Suburban College Facebook page. The public is encouraged to join SSC for this free event to learn more about community literacy while enjoying stories and live presentations.

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults and children who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Adult Education Department administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

South Suburban College’s Business & Career Institute is offering a Forklift Operator Training a session in November at the Oak Forest Center. This certification course covers the basic forklift driving skills needed to obtain a Forklift Operator Certification. 5 Signs That It’s Time To Sell The Family Business Owning and operating a family business is a big part of the American dream. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 90% of all North American business enterprises are family-owned.

But along with realizing that dream comes a bittersweet reality for some family business owners – knowing when it’s time to sell. And that can be a challenge as they wrestle with deep emotional ties to the business and various selling options, says Terry Monroe (www.terrymonroe.com), founder and president of American Business Brokers & Advisors (ABBA) and author of Hidden Wealth: The Secret to Getting Top Dollar for Your Business.

“One of the most challenging parts of owning and operating a family business is succession planning,” Monroe says.

“While many family business owners may dream of passing ownership of the business onto future generations, keeping the business within the family isn’t always a viable option.

“There are many other reasons owners come to the often hard, sometimes easy decision to sell – burnout, profitability, dramatic changes in their industry, a favorable tax climate, etc. But with the economy rapidly changing, it’s a reckoning for some, a fork in the road, and you need to read the signs.”

Monroe gives five signs that it’s time to sell the family business: Your children are not interested in the business. “If you put your kids through college thanks mainly to a profitable small business, chances are they have their sights set on bigger goals when they graduate,” Monroe says. “This realization can be painful to a parent.

There is nothing wrong with laying out the facts regarding the opportunity that the family business presents to them, but forcing the company on your children will only result in resentment or poor performance, or both.”

Your children are not capable. Not everyone has what it takes to run a business, Monroe says, and when unqualified children are allowed to take over, the results can be disastrous.

“This is where the saying ‘Thunder, Blunder, Under’ came from,” Monroe says. “It means the first generation made the business successful, the second generation floundered and somehow kept the business together, and the third generation let the business go under.”

Ownership has become too diluted.

“Unless the company is always growing, it is hard to support a growing number of owners,” Monroe says. “This is true whether they work in the business or not, because the company can’t keep paying

salaries or dividends or bonuses to those not in the business or individuals who are not working full-time there. And having too many owners often disrupts the managing of the company.”

You receive an offer you can’t refuse.

This is rare, Monroe says, but when it happens you should know it is a great offer and take it. “Markets go up and markets go down,” he says. “Regardless what kind of business you are in, you should always know what the market value of your business is in your industry.”

Members of the next generation don’t like working together. Perhaps all of your children are capable, but they can’t seem to get along. “If they are not getting along now,” Monroe says, “it will only be worse once they are in business together. Turning the business over to them will impact your retirement plans, affect their lives, and possibly destroy the relationships they have with each other.”

“Sometimes the difficult but smart decision is to sell the family business,” Monroe says. “It’s important to give yourself enough time to adequately plan, and you may want to consult with some specialists to ensure that you have as much information as possible prior to making a decision.”

With the pandemic restricting our usual exercise regimes due to social distancing regulations, many Americans have had to adapt their fitness goals and align them with at-home workouts.

Combined with the fact that many of us are comfort eating while in the midst of a global health crisis, this may have led some to gain the so-called, ‘Quarantine 15’ without even realizing. However, the good news about working or studying from home is not having to worry about your daily commute taking up too much time that could be used to achieve your at-home fitness goals for the day. But

what happens if you don’t have adequate space in your home and don’t live near an open outdoor area in order to work out?

BarBend.com, the world’s leading strength training resource and news outlet, compiled a comprehensive list of the fittest and least fit cities across Illinois, using data backed by studies based on a variety of factors. These were combined to create an overall fitness score out of 100 for each city on the list. Fitness factors in this study include exercise opportunities, access to healthy food, air pollution, drinking water violations, physical inactivity, obesity and smoking, among others.

The Prairie State’s array of outdoor recreations, rolling hills and rocky canyons welcome year-round opportunity for all to build their fitness routines. Long Grove emerged as the

fittest in the state. However, it was found that South Holland emerged as one of the least fit cities in Illinois (in 203rd position) with an overall fitness score of just 72.86. Despite a relatively high rate of exercise opportunities, it appears residents here may not be making the most of them. According to the CHR’s county health ranking model, ‘individuals who live closer to sidewalks, parks and gyms are more likely to exercise’, therefore access to exercise opportunities is crucial in maintaining a healthy population. Additionally, residents who live in neighborhoods with access to grocery stores that allow them to obtain healthy foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, are more likely to have healthier diets than those who do not have access to these kinds of supermarkets.

The Official Thanksgiving Proclamation The first Thanksgiving is often associated with the Pilgrims. Over two centuries later, President Lincoln was the first to make it official.

The official designation of 1863 is the most lasting of the nine proclamations for a day of thanks issued by Lincoln during his presidency.

The idea of a thanksgiving was nothing new. On Oct. 3, 1789, George Washington had issued a proclamation for a day of thanksgiving, scheduled for November 26 of that year. It had been celebrated on various days throughout the nation, as many states had their own designations.

“Thanksgiving had much of its actual origins in religious proclamations by bishops,” said Dr. James Cornelius, the former Curator of the Lincoln Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. “Forms of thanksgiving had been celebrated throughout much of New England, and continued through colonial times.”

The impetus for an official national day of Thanksgiving came from Sarah Josepha Hale, the 74-year-old editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular women’s magazine. Hale had written to several previous presidents asking for such a holiday, to no avail.

On Sept. 28, 1863, she wrote Lincoln, urging him to declare “a day of our annual Thanksgiving made a National and fixed Union festival.” Noting “an increasing interest felt in our land to have Thanksgiving held on the same day, in all the states...it now needs national recognition and authoritative

fixation, only, to become permanently an American custom and institution.”

Lincoln had actually made several Thanksgiving proclamations during his administration. On Nov. 28, 1861, he had ordered all government departments to shut down for a local day of thanksgiving, and he requested national days of “humiliation, prayer, and fasting” on multiple occasions. Lincoln also proclaimed thanksgiving for “signal victories” in the Union war effort in April 1862 and another remembrance on Aug. 6, 1863.

On Oct. 3, 1863, Lincoln heeded Hale’s call. He issued his own proclamation, declaring the last Thursday in November “as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise.”

In 1863, that date would have also been Nov. 26.

“It was not only the anniversary of Washington’s proclamation, but it also fell on the same day of the week,” said Cornelius. “There’s a sense of history in Lincoln’s effort.”

The words were actually penned

by Secretary of State William Seward, and the original draft was later sold to benefit Union soldiers. To be sure, the proclamation was certainly heavy with military reference. Passages such as “in the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity” and “the advancing armies and navies of the Union” called to light the national tragedy of the war.

Still, 1863 had been productive for the North, with key victories at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and elsewhere. “There was reason to celebrate the progress of the war,” said Cornelius. “Those were

important victories, and Lincoln wanted to remember them.”

Scholars have long debated the extent of Lincoln’s Christianity, but the 1863 proclamation makes repeated religious references. Phrases as the “watchful providence of Almighty God,” “the gracious gifts of the Most High God,” “our beneficent Father,” and “the Almighty Hand” are sprinkled throughout the document.

“Lincoln saw the day as an appropriate time to give national gratitude for God’s plan and goodness,” said Dr. Cullom Davis, a nationally recognized Lincoln scholar from Springfield. “It was yet another reason to be thankful.”

“To top it off, the year of 1863 brought a pretty good harvest,” remarked Cornelius. “Lincoln saw plenty of reasons to celebrate, and they are all summarized in the Thanksgiving proclamation.

References to historical tribute, the military, religion, and agriculture are all found in the document.”

The first official Thanksgiving Day in 1863 would bring even more reason for the North to celebrate. On Nov. 25, the day before, Union troops earned an important victory at Chattanooga. The holiday was exactly a week after Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address.

Many also credit Lincoln as the first President to ceremoniously pardon a turkey, now an annual White House tradition. Lincoln pardoned the bird at the behest of his young son Tad in 1864.

In 1941, Congress authorized a resolution that switched Thanksgiving from the last Thursday in November to the fourth Thursday of the month.

Andre was born October 2, 1958 and passed away November 11, 2020. He was the adored husband of Erin Nauta (nee Wise), and much loved brother of Ria (Mark) Beezhold, Sytze (Donna) Nauta, Bill (Bonnie) Nauta, and the late Irene (Larry) Bommelje, and loving uncle of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Tjeerd “Ted” and Hendrika Nauta.

Andre was born in Grand Rapids, MI and raised in South Holland, IL. A student of Calvary Christian School and Illiana Christian High School, Andre worked at Penn Rexall drug store from the age of 15 through grad-

uation at Trinity Christian College with a bachelors degree in biology. He received his masters degree and his PhD in Gerontology and Sociology from Iowa State. He taught sociology at Dort College, Case Western Reserve University, Central Missouri State University and Trinity Evangelical University. Andre worked in social research at Case Western Reserve University and at Heartland Center in Hammond IL. Andre was also a photographer and Amway business owner.

With all his credentials and degrees, what Andre was known for was his humor and love of people.

Love was Andre’s gift. He was a greeter at church and worked faithfully at the front door, every Sunday, yearround, in all kinds of weather. Hugging was his favorite.

During the restrictions of the Coronavirus pandemic, he maintained many, many friendships through Facebook. Andre revealed his decades-long struggle with chronic depression, and encouraged others who suffered from mental and emotional illnesses. Many were surprised by his ability to be funny, warm and nurturing despite his struggles, revealing that anyone with any personality type can struggle

with mental illness in secret.

By bringing it into the light, he hoped to destroy the stigma associated with mental and emotional illness. Andre was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

Never before have so many generations lived at the same time.

4. Older people should participate in tech design. Thanks to the pandemic, right now is Zoom time, and everyone is connecting virtually. Older people know this is not the way anyone wants to live, but they also know how to make it work for the moment.

In their careers, when technology flowered, they learned well its value and how to use it. Zoom is just an extension of what they already know. As Forbes reported, older people do sometimes get frustrated with technology—and who doesn’t—but older people are seldom asked for input on the design of anything. Maybe if someone over 16 who isn’t a gamer were asked for her opinion, everyone’s frustration would disappear.

Bishop Noll Institute Hosts Virtual Open House

BNI STREAM LAB: Bishop Noll continues to be an educational beacon for the Region as it lights the way in the STEM arena, adding “R” for religion and “A” for the arts as the only fully integrated high school STREAM program in northern Indiana. Bishop Noll unveiled its $1.45 million STREAM Lab. Students study science, technology, engineering and math with art and religion components in the lab. The school will host a virtual open house for prospective students Nov. 23.

Returning Service Member Honors His ‘Workplace Family’

Seasonal change is upon us and more homeowners are making their backyards purposeful for recreation, work and homeschooling while sheltering at home during the pandemic. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), reminds new (and not so new) outdoor power equipment users to be courteous when cleaning up the family yard with leaf blowers, chainsaws, mowers, chippers, shredders and other outdoor power equipment.

“Keeping a neat and safe yard is more important than ever,” says Kris Kiser, President and CEO of OPEI. “We’ve seen record sales of outdoor power equipment this year -- from mowers to leaf blowers -- as homeowners realize their family yard is a safe space for outdoor gatherings, even during cooler months.”

When using outdoor power equipment, it’s important to read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

“If you are a first timer, learn all its safety features and be courteous of others when using it, especially a leaf blower,” adds Kiser.

“With so many people working from home and schooling kids at home, timing your yard work so disturb others is just being a good neighbor.”

The outdoor power equipment industry is constantly innovating and homeowners will find outdoor power equipment that is cleaner and more efficient than ever before. Various power sources are also available including battery/electric, gasoline, propane, solar and hybrids. Regardless of a homeowner’s choice, outdoor power equipment will make quick work of leaves and overgrown grass, trees and shrubs—which is key to keeping the family yard a place for family and friend gatherings and as an extension of their home.

“In the fall, in particular, it’s important to clean up leaves,” notes Kiser. “Wet leaves can often be slick on hard surfaces proving a safety hazard, and leaf piles are a home for ticks.”

If you have a lot of leaves on your property, scientists from the Entomological Society of America recently recommended you remove those leaves from your lawn and any areas you use regularly to prevent ticks from using them for habitat over the winter. “The best thing to do is move them from highly trafficked areas and then shred and mulch them into the grass with a mulching mower.”

He adds, “However, when you are using your leaf blower and other equipment, it’s important to act responsibly. Remember all safety guidelines, and be courteous as to when you use it.”

Here are a few reminders around using a leaf blower: Pay attention when using a leaf blower.

Focus on the task at hand.

Stay outside. Leaf blowers should not be used indoors or in poorly-ventilated areas.

Maintain space around you. Never point an operating leaf blower in the direction of people or pets. Make sure bystanders, including other people using leaf blowers, are at least 50 feet away before you turn on your leaf blower. Stop blowing if you are approached by someone.

Be polite to others. Don’t use your blower during neighborhood quiet hours, such as late at night or very early in the morning.

Dress for safety. Long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a good pair of gloves will help protect your body from debris. Ear and eye protection (safety goggles or glasses) should also be used.

Check your leaf blower. Inspect the blower before and during use to make sure controls, parts and safety devices are not damaged and are working properly. Review your safety manual if needed. Never modify a blower in a way not authorized by the manufacturer.

Blow with care. Do not use your blower on gravel driveways, mulch or bare dirt, which can stir up dust clouds.

Earlier this year, Keith Kuhns, an employee at Hoffer Plastics Corporation, honored the members of his workplace upon the return from his deployment with the U.S. Armed Forces in Afghanistan.

Kuhns presented a plaque to the members of Hoffer Plastics as a token of his appreciation for how the company treated him before, during, and after his deployment.

The personally designed piece was made to acknowledge the efforts made not only on behalf of his direct department, but the entire company as they supported his duty to his country and reminded him that he has a place to come home to.

Serving eight years in the Marines and nine years in the National Guard, Kuhns had already been deployed five times prior to his most recent deployment to Afghanistan in September of 2019. Hoffer Plastics, who has made hiring veterans a priority over the past two years, worked alongside Kuhns to ensure that both he and they were prepared for his deployment.

Kuhns added, “My colleagues at Hoffer Plastics were very flexible with and understanding of my deployment. They simply asked me to keep them updated, rather than making me feel pressured as some employers have. They made my transition feel seamless.”

During his deployment, Hoffer Plastics made it a priority to remain in contact with Kuhns, filling the role that many members of the military find in family members. Kuhns remained in contact with members of his department as they exchanged letters and photos. To his surprise, Kuhns additionally

received numerous care packages from Hoffer Plastics; the packages contained food items, writing supplies, personal care items, and more.

“It meant so much that my colleagues would send me these packages. While they contained what many would define as common goods, many of us didn’t have access to these items where we were stationed. It went to show that they were more than just a workplace”, said Kuhns. “One of Hoffer’s core values is ‘Family’ — treating everyone as if they were family -and it couldn’t be more true.”

Leading up to his return from Afghanistan, Kunhs was unable to disclose the specific details of when he’d be back in the United States and when he’d be returning to Illinois.

Hoffer Plastics was flexible with Kuhns when he did return, allowing him the time to settle in without pressuring him to make an immediate return to work. Upon his return to Hoffer, Kuhns was warmly welcomed, picking up where he left off.

Secretary White Upgrades Temporary License Plates New temporary license plates more durable and provide more information to law enforcement Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that his office has upgraded temporary license plates (also known as TRPs or temporary registration permits), making them more durable and providing more information to law enforcement in an effort to continue to combat fraud and criminal activity.

“This newly designed temporary license plate continues to give law enforcement the tools to quickly and accurately identify the owner of a vehicle,” said White. “Illinois was the first state in the nation to connect temporary license plates with LEADS (Law Enforcement Agency Data System), and we continue to make upgrades to our program and to the temporary license plate itself.”

The newly designed temporary license plate features a more durable material that is thicker and will better withstand car washes and inclement weather, ensuring that the information on the temporary license plate is easily visible to law enforcement. The new temporary license plates also include a bar code and enlarged expiration date, as well as identification including the vehicle’s VIN, year, make and model and the name of the automobile dealer that issued the temporary

license plate. Like the old temporary license plates, the new ones will be affixed to the rear back license plate holder.

In addition, the issuance process of temporary license plates has been be upgraded to require that applications for title and registration are completed before an automobile dealer may issue a temporary license plate. This change improves consumer protection and helps combat fraud, ensuring automobile dealers and remitters apply for title and registration before a temporary license plate can be printed.

This step guarantees that ownership of the vehicle will be properly transferred in a timely fashion to the purchaser.

The newly designed temporary license plates – which are being issued statewide at all Driver Services facilities as well as the 10,048 automobile dealers, currency exchanges and remitters – continue to give law enforcement the ability to access vehicle information immediately through LEADS. Approximately 500,000 temporary license plates are issued each year. There are more than 10.2 million vehicles in Illinois.

Business & Career Institute hosts Harassment Webinar The Business & Career Institute (BCI) of South Suburban College presents a virtual webinar entitled Crucial Conversations: Recognizing & Addressing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace on Wednesday, December 2nd from 9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Allegations of sexual harassment and workplace misconduct have permeated the news in the last few years. As a result, Governor Pritzker mandated all Illinois businesses to provide sexual harassment training for all employees at least once a year, starting in 2020. Behavioral health occupations requiring an Illinois license are also mandated to attend this training. Webinar moderator Alexandra Glumac, HR consultant, will address three crucial questions: • What is sexual harassment?

• What do you do if you experience or witness it? and; • Whose responsibility is it to stop it?

There are continuing education credits (1) available for Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical Professional

BRADLEY, Ill. (November 2020) – As COVID-19 has reduced travel and most activities outside the home, many have refocused their energies on do-it-yourself projects, which can come with their own set of risks. From crafty décor to landscaping and home improvement, fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon Dr. Jalaal Shah at OAK Orthopedics offers expert safety guidelines for adults and families to follow while undertaking any project this fall.

“Every year, there are multitudes of minor and serious injuries from home improvement projects and even crafts — this year, the risk may be higher with more people taking on projects while they spend more time at home during COVID-19,” says Dr. Shah. “From roof repair and landscaping to do-it-yourself home décor, fall projects can be fun and rewarding to accomplish, but they also come with some safety risks, so I wanted to share a list of guidelines for completing projects safely.”

Follow these safety tips from OAK Orthopedics to help avoid injuries when taking on a project: Use the right tools — the right way: Ensure you have the proper tools for your project and know how to use them safely. Even hammering improperly can mean broken fingers. Additionally, deep cuts and even nerve injuries are common with scissors, craft knives and other small tools. Keep sharp objects away from children.

Pay total attention to power tools: From drills and saws to sewing machines, lawn mowers and weed whackers, be sure you know exactly how to operate a machine before you use it. To avoid a variety of traumatic orthopedic injuries, make sure your machine is stable and holding your complete focus, and do not put your hand or arm near drill bits, moving blades or needles before a machine is

turned completely off.

Dress for the job: Safely using equipment means wearing the right equipment, so be sure to have on eye protection, a dust mask, gloves and proper attire as needed (no dangling jewelry, loose sleeves or baggy clothes that may trip you or get caught). If you have long hair, wear it up and out of the way. Shorts, bare feet and sandals are also illadvised for most tasks, so be careful with legand footwear.

Keep your space clean: Make sure you do your work in a well-lit, clean and dry area with stable surfaces. You should also place any tool not being used in a safe location to help you avoid tripping injuries, like bruises, strains and wrist and ankle sprains.

Ladders are no laughing matter: To avoid fall-related injuries, such as fractures, shoulder or elbow dislocations, rotator cuff tears or more severe injuries, be sure to place ladders on a flat surface. Keep the weight centered and do not overextend to reach any item. Also, make sure someone is holding the ladder.

Take a break when you need one: Taking breaks and varying your tasks can help prevent acute injuries, such as strains in your back, forearm and upper arm muscles, as well as chronic injuries, such as shoulder tendinitis or elbow conditions, like cubital tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow. Listen to your body, especially if heavy lifting is involved.

“If you sustain an injury while working with tools or doing heavy lifting and you feel any numbness, pain or have loss of movement in your arm or other extremities, seek medical attention,” says Dr. Shah. “Serious injuries should be seen by a specialist as soon as possible.”

Speaking Of Seniors

SAVED HOBART CLIENT THOUSANDS WOODROW WILCOX On November 12, 2020, a client visited my office to get help to resolve some medical bills that totaled over $10,000. The client is from Hobart, Indiana.

I reviewed the papers and discussed the problems with the client. It seems that the client may have contributed to the billing problems. He bought two policies from one insurance company. One was a Medicare Advantage policy and the other was a hospital indemnity policy which only helped him pay for time in a hospital bed.

He accidentally wrote the wrong policy number on some forms when he went to medical services that were not associated with a stay in the hospital.

I worked with him for almost an hour and a half. The insurance company will reprocess all the claims with the corrected policy information. I typed a letter which he signed to inform medical service providers what we did to correct the billing problem so that bills would be paid properly in accordance with

his Medicare Advantage policy.

He will still have to pay something because a Medicare Advantage policy has deductibles, exemptions, and co-pays. It is different from a Medicare supplement policy. But he won’t have to pay over $10,000.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” to help our clients with medical bill issues like this one. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, shouldn’t you switch to an insurance agency that does? Our agency does.

Sims announces more than $80,000 investment in improving mass transit in Kankakee County Kankakee County will receive $82,000 to improve its mass transit system, State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) announced Monday.

Sims is a member of the Appropriations I and II committees, and he is also one of the lead budget negotiators who sought funds to advance mass transit in rural communities.

Could COVID Kill Entrepreneurship?

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has left many existing small businesses struggling, and the continued economic uncertainty threatens to kill the ambitions of entrepreneurs who planned to launch new businesses but now must put their dreams on hold.

“This crisis will end up being much worse for small businesses than the 2008-11 sub-prime mortgage crisis,” says Andi Gray, president of Strategy Leaders (www.strategyleaders. com), a business consulting firm. “That 2008 crisis mostly hit banks, mortgage,insurance, automotive – all of which were primarily big, publicly owned stock companies. The only small business dominant category was the construction sector which was devastated for years.

Today’s crisis hits and potentially harms nearly every type of small business.

“During that 2008-2011 period, for the first time, the number of business starts fell below the number of business failures. In other words, more businesses were killed off than were launched, and many people wondered whether we had killed entrepreneurship itself. It took five years or more for the small business community to recover from that. The COVID-19 pandemic impact is so much larger and deeper.”

And when small business takes a hit, the country as a whole suffers, she says.

“Small businesses make up 50 percent of the gross-domestic product and also employ half the workforce,” Gray says. “What happens to them determines what happens to the overall economy. We as a country cannot afford to fail them.”So, what steps should small business owners take to make sure they come out on the other side of the current crisis in good shape? Gray suggests a few questions for them to consider: How is your online game? If business owners aren’t already thinking of themselves as all-virtual, e-commerce sellers, they need to be, Gray says. “That’s how your customer of today and the future is going to want to buy and receive products and services,” she says. “You may need to update your website.

Evaluate how good you are at social media communication and promotion. Rethink how you can get orders, track delivery, and receive payments virtually.”

What’s happened to banking and access to capital? In recessions, banks shut down their credit lines, and reduce capital access if they have any concerns about a customer’s ability to pay down debts on time, Gray says. “This will get worse before it gets better. That means you may wake up one morning to find your business is facing challenges with access to capital,” she says. “To keep your credit lines

open and approved, it’s essential that you put in the time and effort to work with your bank.” Without access to the proper amount of capital, she says, your business may not be able to function.

How have employees been affected?

Businesses must be prepared for challenges that impact work production, Gray says.

She points to a study by Microsoft that showed employees’ brains are measurably more stressed working remotely than in an office. It’s harder for remote workers to process information and they get fatigued more easily. “And that’s just one aspect of what our employees are dealing with as the world around them changes so rapidly and dramatically,” Gray says. Build in as many communication and interaction tools as possible.

Is your supply chain stable? “Get prepared for more disruptions as COVID continues to emerge and reemerge and some vendors fall away,” Gray says. “And with hurricane season followed by winter weather, many poorly funded state and local support structures could struggle.” Look at how your supplies get to you. If you’re part of the supply chain, look at how you deliver supplies to your customers.

“Explore alternate shipping solutions and routes – trains, planes, cars, trucks, boats,” Gray says. “Now is the time to investigate all of them. Build in redundancy.”

Staying in business is difficult even without a major crisis, Gray says, as three out of four businesses fail in every 10-year cycle.

“The good news is that small business owners are known for being nimble, flexible, and resourceful,” she says. “Many of them are finding new opportunities by solving problems that didn’t exist, or weren’t priorities, at the start of 2020. If we can buy them some time, they’ll be able to retool, market their new services and products, and keep good people employed.”
