5 Ways For Companies To Give Back – And Still Make Bucks As the coronavirus pandemic turns much of the business world upside down, numerous companies have pivoted while reevaluating their purpose, products, and relationship with customers.

One area of emphasis that has gained traction is philanthropy. Many CEOs see helping those in need as an essential element of a business, especially in these unprecedented times, says Vince Thompson (www.meltatl.com), founder and CEO of the marketing agency MELT and author of Building Brand You: How To Use Your College Experience To Find And Win Your First Job. “Good will is good business,” Thompson says. “To whom much has been given, much is expected. As we are all dealing with the many effects of COVID-19, working from home, and enduring the mental strain of these stressful, uncertain times, seeking to do good right now is one of the most important things a person or a company can do.

“Good will reinforces a company’s purpose, which reinforces esprit de corps. Externally, philanthropy is good PR for your business,

especially for small businesses that depend on their communities to keep them afloat. People are watching how companies respond in tough times, and that good will is reciprocated by new customers and the continued loyalty of regulars. Philanthropic actions strengthen both a company’s internal bonds and its ties with the community.”

Thompson suggests five ways companies can give back and help their own business at the same time.

Expand your reach. Thompson’s company welcomes college interns every summer.

Part of the program includes engaging them with several national brands, through guest speakers and field trips. But last summer, due to the coronavirus outbreak, he evolved his business model into a remote platform, expanding into a year-round virtual series of classes and podcasts, and substantially increasing enrollment while staying connected with his business’ primary partners. “It was a way to share more career development advice with college students and give them some help they really need during these perilous

times,” Thompson says.

Encourage employees to help. “A company can create positive change by leveraging its strong team culture,” Thompson says.

“Allow employees company time to organize outreach activities. Find out what causes they’re passionate about. You’re then sending the importance of the philanthropic message to your workforce. Getting employee involvement from the strategic phase onward helps the philanthropic initiatives align with company goals.”

Launch a charity drive. Start a collection for a particular cause. Your company can collect non-perishable food items for distribution at food banks. Toy drives are popular around the holidays. “You can set up automatic donations through virtual giving platforms,” Thompson says. “You could even leave out a collection jar at your place of business and cash in the collected amount to send through an online portal.”

Provide selected pro bono work.

Philanthropic planning must be precise, especially during a pandemic as companies

strategize on what’s financially feasible and what is not. But Thompson says there’s usually room to do a few extra jobs for free, which could go a long way for someone without the means to hire you otherwise. “Research and reach out to people who can use your services but can’t afford them,” Thompson says.

“Involve your team in the nominating process.

These are win-win feel-good actions.”

Help other businesses. “Buying from local businesses is one of the best ways to give back, especially when so many are struggling,” Thompson says. “Leave nice reviews and link to your favorite local companies on your website. Look for beneficial cross-promotions that are good for your business and your partners.”

“More and more businesses are now realizing the importance of giving back,” Thompson says. “It simultaneously improves employee and customer engagement while making a great impact on people’s lives.”

Twelfth Annual Benefit Honors SSC to Host Workforce Equity Three Outstanding Champions Initiative Grant Open Houses for Veterans and Their Families The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP)’s “Fighting for Equity and Justice” Twelfth Annual Benefit on November 19 honored three outstanding champions who have made significant contributions to improving the lives of our veterans and their families.

“We greatly appreciate the generosity of our volunteers and donors whose support allows NVLSP to continue to advance its mission to help veterans and their families obtain the benefits they are rightfully eligible to receive,” said National Veterans Legal Services Program Executive Director Bart Stichman.

Kayla Williams, Senior Fellow and Director, Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for A New American Security emceed the program. Ms. Williams is also a former U.S. Army Sergeant, nationally recognized military and women veterans advocate and accomplished author.

Will Gunn, former General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and retired Air Force Colonel as well as NVLSP Board Member, served as keynote speaker.

Mr. Gunn was the first Chief Defense Counsel in the Department of Defense Office of Military Commissions. Mr. Gunn received his law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, the nation’s oldest student run legal services organization.

The event highlighted NVLSP’s work to advance equity and justice for veterans and the work NVLSP has done to secure the benefits for three particular veterans. NVLSP recognized three honorees at the event for their dedicated service to veterans, service members and military families.

NVLSP presented the 2020 Lawyers Serving Warriors® (LSW) Excellence Award to Alexandra Magill Bromer a Partner at Perkins Coie LLP. The award honors a volunteer attorney who has provided exemplary pro bono services to veterans and service members. Since 2014, Ms. Bromer has skillfully handled LSW research projects and multiple types of pro bono cases, such as, Combat-Related Special Compensation, Discharge Upgrades, and Military Medical Retirement NVLSP’s 2020 Pro Bono Partner of the Year Award was presented to Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, LLP, a valued NVLSP partner for over a decade. Faegre Drinker Counsel Theodore M. Budd accepted the award on behalf of the firm. COVID-19 Changes Can’t Stop Annual CPA Day of Service Demonstrating another “COVID pivot,” the Illinois CPA Society’s 11th annual CPA Day of Service became a season of service. Mindful of statewide COVID-19 restrictions and precautions, volunteers donning matching purple T-shirts participated in a wide range of smaller, but no less powerful, charitable activities this fall across Illinois.

Despite the trying times, helping hands and smiling faces were abundant as hundreds of volunteers took part in a wide variety of creative individual, small group, and virtual charitable acts supporting causes near and dear to them. Assisting at animal shelters, building homes with Habitat for

Humanity, cleaning forest preserves, filling local food banks, growing community vegetable gardens, and raising money running virtual 5Ks were just some of the actions taken as volunteers tried to give back to their communities.

“Our annual CPA Day of Service is meant to be an opportunity for volunteers to come together and connect with their local communities and organizations to make a positive, long-lasting impact.

The coming together part was certainly a challenge this year, but we couldn’t be more proud of all the efforts our volunteers took to safely and creatively spend time supporting the causes and communities they care about

when the need has seemingly never been greater,” says Todd Shapiro, Illinois CPA Society president and CEO. The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) recently announced an award of $1,200,000 for the continuance of the Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) Grant at South Suburban College. The WEI project is designed to create, support and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high need areas within SSC District #510.

Through new programs, expanded access, opportunity, and support services, the project is anticipated to yield impactful outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and local businesses.

Additionally, the WEI grant provides wraparound services including comprehensive financial assistance and academic support to participating students within a variety of program areas providing stackable credentials.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our home is listed for $250,000. We received an offer for $240,000 and they wanted us to pay $6000 of their closing costs. The buyer has FHA financing.

We countered their offer with $245,000 and no closing costs. Anyway, after going back and forth, our Realtor convinced us to pay the $6000 in closing costs and raise the price to $252,000. We did and the buyers accepted our offer. A few weeks later, the appraisal came back at a $247,000 value.

Now the buyer wants the home for the appraisal price and wants the $6000 in closing costs that we agreed upon. Our Realtor said take it and move on. We are not happy with this. What is your opinion?

Answer: The concept of a seller crediting a buyer for their closing costs is pretty normal. The amount varies from deal to deal. If the amount can be agreed upon, it is a benefit to both parties, and produces many successful closings.

A lower appraisal means that in order for the deal to be financed by the lender, the seller would have to drop to the appraisal price or the buyer would have to make up the difference. Very few buyers are going to want to purchase a home over the appraised value. This FHA appraisal

stays with your home for 4 months. So if you say no to the deal, the next FHA buyer within the 4 months, would use the same appraisal.

It is possible that you could find a conventional loan buyer, with the hope that this appraisal would yield a higher value.

But you are starting all over and there are no guarantees that it would be easy to find a conventional buyer or that the appraisal would be any different.

Since your contract is being renegotiated at a lower price than what was agreed upon, you do NOT have to pay the $6000 in closing costs. Sure you agreed to pay them, but the buyer also agreed to pay a higher price for your home.

Perhaps you can renegotiate the closing costs or other items in the contract that would make the deal appealing to both sides. After all, the buyer did like your home and you do want to sell!

Home Opens Door to Healing After Devastating Loss In the wee hours of October 9, 2017, the disoriented and panic-stricken Barnes family, with two little boys in tow, frantically scrambled to evacuate their Santa Rosa, California, home. Smoke burned their lungs. Ash stung their eyes. Nearby fires raged, engulfing homes as howling winds fed the flames.

In the end, the Tubbs Fire, deemed one of the most destructive wildfires in California history, destroyed more than 5,643 homes, including the Barnes’.

They returned to the lot where their house once stood, to gain closure and confront the harsh reality that the house was truly gone. But seeing the empty lot had a profound — and lasting — impact on 7-year-old Brett.

When her search for relatable, child-centric resources to augment Brett’s recovery came up short, mother Carrie Lee Barnes used her family’s experiences to inform her compelling, inspirational book, Home: A Story of Resilience and Healing. Told from a child’s perspective, Home is one little boy’s account of the abrupt and devastating loss of his house and his emotional journey toward discovering the true meaning of home. Written primarily for young children from ages 3 to 7, Home is an uplifting story intended to bring hope and healing in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

“My goal is for this book to help comfort children as they find their new normal after the loss of their home due to any circumstance,” Barnes says. “When I read Home to my little ones, they immediately saw themselves in the story. It opened up a forum for dialogue and healing for my boys and allowed them to feel a part of something bigger.”

With wildfires, hurricanes and other natural disasters happening more and more frequently, it’s important for children to have age-appropriate resources for coping. Home is Barnes’ heartfelt contribution to this very worthy cause.

“My hope for Home is that it provides a much needed glimpse at an ending for natural disaster victims,” Barnes adds. “There is a moment when you find peace in the constants of the people you love who are around you every day. We need to find our center, the place we call home, in our human connections.”

Author Carrie Lee Barnes is a stay-at-home mom who previously trained surgeons on advanced robotic technology in the operating room. Home was written to help victims of natural disasters, especially children, who are emotionally affected by the loss of their home. She lives with her husband and two sons in Santa Rosa, California.

Celebrating statesmanship in Illinois can help bridge the divisions in the Prairie State As a protracted and divisive political campaign season draws to a close, America is a nation in which partisan cleavages appear sharper than at any time in recent memory.

Political analysts write of the United States as now consisting of two distinct nations, Red America and Blue America, and question if common ground will be achieved again.

The partisan divide here in Illinois is equally striking, intensified by regional tensions and antagonisms. The concept of “One Illinois” often seems an elusive aspiration rather than an achievable goal.

We have no formula that magically ends partisanship in Illinois, quiets the relentless rancor, and forges a coherent state identity and sense of shared destiny. However, we offer a tangible plan to affirm and honor the Prairie State’s best traditions — traditions that include political leaders who are able to hold very different political views while still working together to find common ground.

The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University was founded nearly a quarter-century ago by former Sen. Paul Simon, a lifelong Democrat. It is delighted to partner with former Gov. Jim Edgar, a lifelong Republican, to establish an award that illuminates the best traditions of both major parties and underscores the truth that elevated leadership can come from either of these parties or from independents.

The Paul Simon-Jim Edgar Prairie State Statesmanship Award will honor exceptional leadership in Illinois by state and local government officials. It will be presented to leaders — statesmen and stateswomen —who display unusual vision, courage, compassion, civility, effectiveness, and bipartisanship in their work for their communities and Illinois.

When considering a public policy issue, the first question a statesman or stateswoman asks is, “what is in the public interest?”

Personal and partisan considerations can follow later — but hopefully much later.

Given our current political climate, it is easy to forget that statesmanship, while unusual, has been a critical feature of Illinois politics and history.

Abraham Lincoln represents the model statesman. Even while dealing with the

existential crisis of the Civil War, Lincoln looked to the future and supported initiatives to create land grant universities, complete the transcontinental railroad, and help pioneers settle in the West.

Illinois has been blessed with other statesmen over the decades, including exemplary governors from both parties.

Edward Coles prevented Illinois from becoming a slave state in the 1820s. John Altgeld bravely pardoned three men who it seems were wrongly convicted of the 1886 Haymarket bombing.

Henry Horner supported tax increases and bond issues to pay for unemployment relief during the Depression.

William Stratton helped build the state’s highways and universities in the 1950s and also advocated for civil rights. Richard Ogilvie pushed through Illinois’ first income tax in 1969 and established the state’s Environmental Protection Agency. Statesmanship in Illinois has not occurred only in the governor’s mansion but also in the halls of the Capitol and in city halls up and down the Prairie State.

We believe it is important to identify and celebrate statesmanship in Illinois. As we consider recipients for the annual SimonEdgar Award we will examine mayors who craft bold and imaginative plans for their cities and take political gambles to bring their dreams to fruition; city council members who prepare creative and constructive long-term strategies for their communities; and state legislators and constitutional officers who are willing to break from party orthodoxy and political comfort zones to advance solutions to improve the lives of fellow Illinoisans.

The Simon-Edgar Award will shine a spotlight on exceptional leadership that is taking place in our communities. It will serve as a reminder that statesmanship is not only possible in Illinois, but is actually happening and deserves recognition and encouragement. Our fondest hope is that this award will inspire current and future public servants to act in the best traditions of our state.

He founded the Edgar Fellows Program at the University of Illinois’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs. John Shaw is the director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and is the author of five books on history and politics.

Create a Pet-Friendly Home This Holiday Season This year, holiday gatherings may look different than celebrations in years past. With traditions and large gatherings up in the air, pet parents can take some comfort in knowing they can still celebrate with their pets.

Before the festivities begin, however, it’s important for pet parents to ensure their homes are as pet-friendly as possible. Teach Good Table Manners Table manners aren’t just for humans. Help prevent begging at the table by refraining from giving your pup food or attention. When you sit down for a meal, place your pet in a crate or pen, or encourage him or her to go to a special place like his or her bed or a comfortable chair.

“Divert your pup’s attention from tempting treats on the holiday table by providing an activity, such as a long-lasting chew or a puzzle toy,” Havens said.

If you don’t crate your pet during your holiday meal, avoid sharing human food under the table.

“Table scraps such as gravy and stuffing may look harmless, but even small amounts can lead to serious health issues,” Freeman said.

“Stress and extra people in the home may cause your pet to act differently and even show signs of anxiety,” Freeman said. “To set up your pet’s retreat, use a crate or pen he or she is comfortable with, offer blankets or his or her favorite bed and place a few treats or chews inside.”

Exercise Caution When Decorating While families may be brightening up their homes this holiday season, it’s important to ensure decor such as candles and seasonal plants are placed out of your pet’s reach.

Flickering candles can be intriguing and seasonal plants like holly and poinsettia are poisonous to dogs and cats.

“Try providing a tall cat tree or scratcher near the holiday tree to redirect your kitty to an appropriate climbing apparatus,” Havens said. “The Merry & Bright Holiday House Cat Scratcher can help satisfy your cat’s instincts to scratch in fun, holiday fashion.”

Extra decor sometimes means more electrical cords, which can be tempting “chew toys” for your pet. Freeman recommends pet parents take special care to ensure electrical cords for festive lighting are not accessible by taping them down or covering them to help prevent injuries.

Also remember to keep glass ornaments, tinsel, pinecones and light stands out of reach of your furry friend.

He is t he Archbishop of Washington. Previously he was the Archbishop of Atlanta from 2005 to 2019; The Bishop of Bellville, Illinois from 1994 to 2004 and Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago from 1993-1994. Gregory was insta lled in Rome by Pope Francis on Saturday November 28, 2020. He was one of 13 other men ordained on Saturday and the only American elevated to the College of Cardinals .As a Cardinal, Gregory will be one of the Pope’s closest advisors and one of only 120 men will elect the next pontiff.

“Go Local” Campaign to Support Small Businesses Time Equities, Inc. (TEI), a full-service real estate firm, along with Entertain Impact’s Campaign Fund, a non-profit vehicle that enables people to support social impact campaigns, announced today the launch of Go Local, a philanthropic campaign to increase awareness and education on the importance of shopping locally. Small businesses play an essential role in sustaining the health and vitality of a community. Go Local aims to educate and incentivize consumers to spend locally (online or in person) for their day-today retail and service needs–from hair and nail salons to the local toy store.

Go Local comes at a time when small businesses have been hit hard amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and related economic downturn. can fund your IRA with virtually any type of vehicle, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and exchange-traded funds. And if you already have a traditional IRA, you can combine the new funds with the old ones, making it easier to track your holdings. As is the case with leaving your money in your old employer’s plan or transferring it to a new plan, you’ll continue to benefit from tax-deferred growth. Keep in mind, though, that IRAs have costs, too, possibly including transaction costs to buy or sell new investments. (One more thing to keep in mind: When you want to move a retirement plan to an IRA, you may want to make a direct rollover, so the old plan’s administrator moves the money directly into the IRA, allowing you to avoid immediate taxes. If you were to make an indirect rollover, you’d get the money yourself, but your old employer would have to deduct 20% for federal taxes, and you’d have to deposit the entire balance, including the withholding, into your IRA within 60 days.)

So, for example, if you work for a hospital that changes ownership, and you have been participating in a 403(b), 457(b) or 401(k) retirement plan, what should you do with it now?

Basically, you have four options: Cash out your plan. You can simply cash out your plan and take the money, but you’ll have to pay taxes on it, and possibly penalties as well. So, unless you really need the funds and you have no other alternative, you may want to avoid liquidating your account.

Roll your account into your new employer’s plan. If it’s allowed, you can roll over your old 403(b), 457(b) or 401(k) plan into your new employer’s plan. Before making this move, you’ll want to look at the new plan’s investment options (which should be numerous) and fees (which should be low). If you move the money directly to the new plan, you won’t be taxed at the time of the transfer, and your funds can continue to grow tax-deferred.

Leave your plan with your old employer. If your account balance is above a certain level, you may be able to leave your plan with your old employer’s plan administrator. You won’t be able to contribute any more money to the plan, but if you like the investment options you’ve chosen, keeping the money in your old plan might be a viable choice.

Move your account into a traditional IRA. One possible advantage to moving your 403(b), 457(b) or 401(k) into a traditional IRA is you’ll open up a world of new investment options, because you

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA How’s your memory this year? Have you stopped to reflect on 2020? It’s been one crazy year, but even though Thanksgiving has passed, it’s still important to take a step back and remember the Lord’s faithfulness.

Giving thanks is rooted in remembering.

Psalm 77:11 says, “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.”

Psalm 105:5 says, “Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered.”

The Bible is full of calls and commands to remember what God has done in the lives of his people. In the Old Testament, God often reminds his people to remember that they were once slaves in Egypt, a remembrance that should spark thanksgiving and obedience (Deuteronomy 5:15).

King David even appointed special “thanksgivers” to sing and praise the Lord near the Ark of the Covenant. Part of David’s song of thanks is, “Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him,

sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!” (1 Chronicles 16:8-9) A very basic part of giving thanks is remembering what God has done.

I don’t pretend to know how difficult this year has been for you. But I can tell you it’s been difficult for me as well, with the loss of loved ones, struggles with racial justice, and the lack of normalcy in life due to the pandemic. But I also look at 2020 and see God’s wondrous works in my new, beautiful nephew, my new job, my loving wife and family, and my supportive church.

When I remember, I can’t help but give thanks.
