Wise Winter Weather Tips for Your Family Yard When Old Man Winter comes, calling, homeowners need to keep everyone in the family – including your pets—safe. Follow these wise winter weather tips from the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) and TurfMutt.

Bring Pets Inside: Dogs and cats should be kept inside during cold weather months.

Wipe their paws and bellies after they’ve been outside, and check for ice accumulation between paw pads. If you’re using a de-icing agent, remove that salt and other agents, too.

Pick up Debris: Before it snows, remove debris and household items from your family yard. Doormats, hoses, toys and sticks can hide under a layer of snow that could harm your snow thrower, family or pets.

Clear a Path: Your snow thrower is a convenient way to clear your driveway and

sidewalks. It also gives your pet a path to their bathroom area.

Trim Trees Carefully: When using a chainsaw, stand with your weight on both feet, adjust your stance so you are angled away from the blade and hold the chainsaw with both hands.

Ventilate Portable Generators: If a winter storm knocks out your power, a generator can be a life-saver, if used properly. Place the generator outside and away from windows, doors and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

Watch Where You Throw: Keep kids and pets away from the equipment, and never put your hand in the chute or auger to clear a blockage. Turn the machine off and always use a clean-out tool.

Hunger and joblessness have also reared their ugly head. Communities in the Southland are doing their best to cope and bring jobs back, notes Joseph Wiszowaty, Calumet City director of community and economic development.

By way of jump starting said economy, Calumet City anticipates the opening of a recreational and medical cannabis dispensary across from River Oaks Center, 1330 Torrence Avenue. Mission Dispensaries cannabis facility is set to open in December, 2020. Calumet City residents were polled some time ago and were mostly in favor of the dispensary which is not near any residential areas.

According to published accounts between $400K and $500K could flow into city coffers thanks to the new facility. It was a tossup between Lansing and Calumet City but the location in the River Oaks Mall center proved a powerful incentive. This is an exciting time for Calumet City. If lady luck shines on her and she gets the south suburban casino license, that alone will pick up the economy. There are all kinds of cosmetic and recreational improvements being made in and around CC, thanks to Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush’s initiative.

The First Installment Tax Year 2020, which is 55 percent of the previous year’s total tax, is due March 2, 2021. However, the Cook County Board last week waived late charges through May 3, 2021.

“People need more time to pay. That’s the bottom line,” Pappas said. “By posting the bills to my website now, property owners can start thinking about how to pay their bills for 2021, which is going to be a hard year for many, many people.”

Consider These Year-end Financial Moves SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN We’re nearing the end of 2020 – and for many of us, it will be a relief to turn the calendar page on this challenging year. However, we’ve still got a few weeks left, which means you have time to make some yearend financial moves that may work in your favor.

Here are a few suggestions: Add to your IRA. For the 2020 tax year, you can put in up to $6,000 to your traditional or Roth IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. If you haven’t reached this limit, consider adding some money. You actually have until April 15, 2021, to contribute to your IRA for 2020, but the sooner you put the money in, the quicker it can go to work for you. Plus, if you have to pay taxes in April, you’ll be less likely to contribute to your IRA then.

Make an extra 401(k) payment. If it’s allowed by your employer, put in a little extra to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan.

And if your salary goes up next year, increase your regular contributions.

See your tax advisor. It’s possible that you could improve your tax situation by making some investment-related moves.

For example, if you sold some investments whose value has increased, you could incur capital gains taxes. To offset these gains, you could sell other investments that have lost value, assuming these investments are no longer essential to your financial strategy. Your tax advisor can evaluate this type of move, along with others, to determine those that may be appropriate for your situation.

Review your investment mix. As you consider your portfolio, think about the events of these past 12 months and how you responded to them. When COVID-19 hit early in the year, and the financial markets plunged, did you find yourself worry-

ing constantly about the losses you were taking, even though they were just on “paper” at that point? Did you even sell investments to “cut your losses” without waiting for a market recovery? If so, you might want to consult with a financial professional to determine if your investment mix is still appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance, or if you need to make some changes.

Evaluate your need for retirement plan withdrawals. If you are 72 or older, you must start taking withdrawals – technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Typically, you must take these RMDs by December 31 every year. However, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Stimulus (CARES) Act suspended, or waived, all RMDs due in 2020. If you’re in this age group, but you don’t need the money, you can let your retirement accounts continue growing on a tax-deferred basis.

Think about the future. Are you saving enough for your children’s college education? Are you still on track toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned? Or have your retirement plans changed as a result of the pandemic? All of these issues can affect your investment strategies, so you’ll want to think carefully about what decisions you may need to make.

Looking back – and ahead – can help you make the moves to end 2020 on a positive note and start 2021 on the right foot.

Better Business Bureau Serving Northern Indiana celebrates Centennial The Better Business Bureau serving Northern Indiana will kick off its 100th anniversary celebration on Dec. 3, exactly 100 years from the date of its first board meeting, held at the Chamber of Commerce in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Dec. 3, 1920, at 6 p.m.

Twelve businesses were approved for BBB membership at the first meeting in 1920, including Lehman Shoe Co., Wayne Hardware Co, and the Warriner Manufacturing Company.

Throughout the last century BBB has become an internationally recognized champion for trust, and the torch has become a symbol people believe in. But BBB has humble beginnings in the early 1900s when advertising had very few limitations and many unscrupulous sellers permeated the market. Legitimate businesses in the community faced a crossroads: how could they protect their own credibility before it was destroyed by less-reputable charlatans promoting miracle cures, tonics and creams? Self-policing Vigilance

Committees were formed by local ad clubs (today’s American Advertising Federation). These Committees were devoted full-time to eliminating abuses and creating advertising codes and standards and quickly spun off into independent Better Business Bureaus.

“Over the past 100 years, BBB has grown substantially, encompassing a 23-county service area across northern Indiana and accrediting more than 3,700 businesses annually,” said Marjorie Stephens, President and CEO of BBB Serving Northern Indiana. “But the core mission remains the same – to help consumers find trustworthy businesses.”

On December 2, 2020, I helped a client from Crown Point, Indiana. He got a medical bill for $150. But it was a bill that happened when he was not yet our client. We had no responsibility to help him. We helped him anyway.

The insurance company that he used before he became our client never had paid on a medical claim from July 26, 2019. He did not become our client until March 1, 2020.

To help him, I phoned the previous insurance company with him. We waited a long time to speak to anyone about the problem. But no live person ever answered the call. After waiting over 20 minutes, we stopped. I wrote a message to the old insurance company and had him sign it. Then, I faxed that message to two fax numbers that I had from dealing with that same insurance company in the past.

The client’s old insurance company is very well known.

It does a lot of advertising on TV and in mailings to attract senior citizen clients for Medicare related insurance policies. But many well-known insurance companies put lots of money into advertising and little money into customer service to solve clients’ medical bill problems. It seems that less well-known insurance companies put more money into customer service to strengthen their reputation and not much money into expensive advertising. They build their business by “word of mouth” advertising.

The average senior citizen would not know of these companies because they do not advertise much. That is why every senior citizen should consult an independent insurance agent or agency in their area. The experience of dealing with insurance companies that serve a community is an important factor in protecting a senior from selecting a policy with an insurance company that will take the senior’s money but not give the senior help when a medical bill problem arises. And in the real world, problems will arise.

Today, we focus on another classic rivalry: Son vs. Serpent. This is not a friendly fight. This is an epic struggle to the death.

For our sakes, the Son must win and the Serpent must die.

It started in the Garden of Eden. The Serpent had just lured our first parents to join his rebellion against God. This opened the door to all the sin, evil and misery we’ve known since. Inside and outside of us. The Serpent gloated. “Ah, sweet victory!”

“Not so fast, Serpent!” God said. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Genesis 3:15, NIV84).

This was the first time God announced his Son’s coming. It is a three-layered promise. First, God will take woman back

on his team and renew hostilities between her and the Serpent. Second, her descendants – those who share her trust, love, and allegiance for God – will continually be at war with the Serpent. Finally, ‘he’, a descendant of Eve, will crush the Serpent’s head. And be seriously wounded in the fight.

Round One happened at the cross.

There Jesus defeated sin, Satan and death to rescue us from them. Jesus dealt Satan a mortal wound. The final round takes place when Jesus returns to finish him off.

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan underneath your feet” (Romans 16:20a).

Confess your rebellion to God. Seek his forgiveness. Surrender your life to the care and control of King Jesus. And share in his victory.

Question: We recently put a bid on a home. Our Real estate agent told us that we had to sign a multiple offer form and that we should increase our offer if we have any chance of getting this home. We did not increase our offer and we did not get the home. I am still confused about this. Could you explain?

Answer: It is normal practice for a Realtor to inform all buyers in writing, that this is a multiple offer situation. It notifies the buyers that they are up against other offers. This notice usually has a final date & time, by which any buyer may change their offer and let the seller know their intentions. In other words, a buyer who really wants this home may increase their initial offer in hopes that this higher offer will be chosen by the seller. Keep in mind that sellers look at more than just the price. Financing terms, possession, etc, may also be important to them.

Example: a seller may want to take a cash offer that is lower in price, rather than take a higher offer from a buyer who must obtain financing.

The Realtor goes over with the seller, the

positives and negatives of each offer. The seller then chooses to accept or negotiate with one of these offers.

A buyer does NOT have to change an offer just because of a multiple offer situation. They may let the seller know that the original offer stands.

That being said, experience has shown us that in most cases, buyers will increase the initial offer for that home if the increase is still acceptable to their budget and loan qualification status. This increases the chances of their offer being accepted by the seller. Multiple offers are a big benefit to sellers for obvious reasons.

Your Realtor felt that if you wanted this home, you needed to increase your offer.

The Realtor was your consultant. The final decision was yours to make.
