CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: What is the difference between a house and a home? Answer: How many times have you thought about all the places you have lived over your lifetime? Christmas at home with your parents when you were allowed to open one present before Christmas eve dinner and the excitement that brought? You remember that living room with the tree you decorated with your parents, which looked so warm and festive in that cozy Living room. The memory of that home is still special to you today. Maybe it was that attic apartment above the corner grocery store, where every time the milk cooler door closed, you could hear it loud and clear. How about your first home where the Kitchen was so small that you and your spouse took turns when you needed to enter it? So many memories that put a smile on your face. That’s why memories are so special. Whether it’s remembering a loved one that has passed or the memory of living in a home that brought back happy feelings of an earlier part of your life. Those special memories of our past are part of the process for keeping us happy. Although, we should never live in the past, it will always be a part of who we are. Maybe driving past a previous home and
remembering when your daughter fell off the bike on that driveway, skinning her knee and wanting a hug from you so the hurt would go away. The basketball hoop on your garage where you taught your son or daughter to do layups. Remembering the home where you read, “Twas the night before Christmas” to your children and that priceless look in their eyes. It’s really not the act that you remember, it’s the feeling of that moment that you will never forget. So, when you are at your home with those special people in your life, drinking your spiced coffee and hot chocolate, turn off that TV and talk about those special moments in your life that are etched in your mind. I guarantee there will be laughs and some happy tears! This is what makes a house, a home. After all, Tis the season to remember, that we’re never far from home. RICHARD ZEKVELD Come, Messiah, bring salvation. Son of David, lead us home. Come, rule over every nation. Lord, we long for rest, shalom! Come, redeem us, liberate us From our sins and all who hate us. Faithful Yahweh broke the silence Of those dark and dreadful years. Rome then ruled with iron violence. Israel cried to him who hears. Yahweh promised Zechariah, “John will run before Messiah.” Gabriel appeared to Mary, “Greetings, highly favored one! God has chosen you to carry His and David’s royal Son.” By God’s Spirit, she conceived, Humbly gave herself, believed. Joseph and the virgin mother, Sent by Rome to Bethlehem, Looked for lodging from another, But there was no room for them. God sent Jesus to a shed, Where a manger was his bed. Angels, radiant with glory, Startled shepherds on the earth, Spoke and sang the gospel story Of our Lord Messiah’s birth. “Glory and Shalom!” they cried. Echoing, the hills replied. Jewish shepherds knelt before him. Gentile magi from afar Came to worship and adore him, Led by sacred text and star. Jesus, sent for our salvation, Born for every tribe and nation! God has given us his story That we might proclaim his glory. Merry Christmas! Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church (cfcsh.org).

AMVET POST 43 HOSTS ANNUAL HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR: The Post 43 AMVETS Holiday craft fair was a huge success by all accounts! A much anticipated event every year by guests who come from far and near to buy one of a kind Christmas gifts. For example-American ingenuity never fails to amaze me. One of the crafters. Sharon, pictured on these pages came with a totally unique solution to safely removing a hot microwave bowl without burning oneself. Shirley sewed an 8 x 8 piece of doubled ordinary polished cotton with a shallow indentation in the center. She placed the bowl of soup on the cloth, heated the soup and removed from microwave by the elongated ‘handles.’ No fuss no muss and best of all, no burns. When N 2 N left the show -what Sharon had with her sold out and she had to take back orders in time for Christmas. Also pictured here are Tom and Val Piotrowski Amvets Post 43 coordinators, Post Commander Mike Steele along with his daughter in law Sara, and granddaughter, 19 month old Isabella. Tom was cooking that day and his stuffed cabbage was just short of heaven! ***

I Fight For Our Clients When Toughness Is Needed
Christmas Giving MIKE BUDER
WOODROW WILCOX On December 14, 2021, I did a lot of research to help a client from Crown Point who was getting a wrongful bill from a medical firm in Florida. Previously, I had done some research on the bill, too. I had even written a polite letter to the medical billing firm on October 4, 2021. I always start with a pleasant attitude asking the biller to correct its mistake. In this case, the medical biller ignored my nice letter. That was not a smart thing to do. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the second letter that I sent to the medical billing firm in Florida to fight the wrongful bill that was sent to our 85-year-old client from Crown Point. I hope that reading this letter will prove to many that I FIGHT FOR OUR CLIENTS WHEN TOUGHNESS IS NEEDED. We ask for your help because we have not received much help from others in your firm. Our client was billed for services by (your company). The insurance company never received the claims from Medicare. I sent a letter to your firm on October 4, 2021 simply requesting cooperation to get the bill paid. Yesterday, I was bounced around by (the hospital staff and staff of your company) for over an hour trying to find someone who was smart enough and had authority to do what we asked to be done. I was told that the claim was under review with the insurance company. I phoned the secondary insurer again and got help from a claims person. She told me that the insurance company was asking your firm to supply complete information about the claims and that your firm had not yet responded. Specifically, the insurance company got no information about the claims with DOS 12/13/20 and 12/14/20. The secondary got incomplete information on the claims with DOS 12/15/20, 12/16/20, and 12/18/20.
Does anyone at your firm know how to cooperate by providing vital claims information to get paid – especially when a secondary insurer wants the information to pay the claim? The bills that have been sent to our client give clear evidence that the claims NEVER WERE FILED WITH MEDICARE PROPERLY. The bills show no adjustments or payments by Medicare. That means someone at your firm failed to do their job. Your firm sent a bill to our client without ever filing the claim properly with Medicare. You know – or should know – that is a violation of Medicare rules and regulations. Now, we can’t find any responsible person at your firm that knows what to do. You know your firm’s organization better than we do. Please, help find the correct people in your organization and get them on this. If this is not resolved soon, we will help our client find the state or federal agencies to which a complaint should be sent regarding your firm’s bad business practices. See accompanying copy of letter of October 4, 2021. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation of “going the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients in wrongful medical bill matters. The help that we give for free proves that we really do care about our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available from bookstores or online.
Family Vaccine Mandate? Half of Illinois Households will Enforce their Own Vaccine Mandates Over the Holidays to Protect Elderly Relatives For many families hosting festive gatherings with elderly relatives this season, an elephant lurks in the room: the vaccination status of family and friends who have been invited, particularly as the new omicron variant begins to spread around the country. A recent poll found that nearly 1 in 5 (19%) people still say they don’t intend on getting vaccinated, which may result in those who are vaccinated hesitating to mingle with those who aren’t. But if you’ve already sent out invites to loved ones asking them to join in the family gathering, when is an appropriate time to ask about their vaccination status? Is it better to recall these invites sooner rather than later? Duffy & Duffy, a New York-based medical malpractice law firm, commissioned a survey of 3,758 respondents to deduce people’s opinions about having unvaccinated family members around their elderly relatives this upcoming holiday season. It was discovered that over half (57%) of Illinois households said they will consider not inviting unvaccinated guests to their family get-togethers this festive season to protect the elderly. The holidays can be a difficult time for those with elderly relatives in care or nursing homes. For some, it’s difficult to arrange travel for the elderly, especially if they’re in a fragile state and
require “round the clock care.” For others, there could be health risks and complications associated with their parents/grandparents leaving their care facility. And for those with elderly relatives in nursing homes or care facilities, 44% said they have concerns about unvaccinated home employees returning to work after the holidays, after being out and about celebrating (particularly during New Year’s celebrations). This is indeed a valid concern as earlier in the year, nearly onefifth of U.S. coronavirus deaths were linked to nursing facilities. In fact, the survey found that nearly 3 in 4 (74%) respondents believe that nursing homes should require negative tests for all residents returning over holiday activities. Moreover, 77% of people questioned in the survey believe nursing homes should require all staff to be fully vaccinated. “Although the festive period is typically one in which extended families including elderly relatives celebrate together, difficult questions will need to be addressed regarding people’s vaccination status, not only in facilities such as nursing homes, but within families too—particularly as covid cases surge once again across the country,” says a spokesperson for Duffy & Duffy.
I ask, what is your definition of giving during this Christmas season? Christmas is celebrating the life and birth of Jesus Christ who gave his life for us – for our sins…hundreds of years later we celebrate this with an abundance of gifts in a material form that society tells us we have to – to sustain the prosperous economy. To compete with the Jones’, to have the next best thing for the year, to show your love through a price tag, style, or brand. Is this truly giving or multiplying what you’ve been doing throughout the year for the loved ones surrounding you (wife/ husband, kids, sister, mom, etc.)? Are they in “need” of 8 gifts under the tree totaling $800.00, racking up your credit card debt and most likely ending up in the back of the closet or donated 6 months later. Please – remember what Christmas is all about. Christmas is not about going into debt financially and emotionally. It is about helping the elderly neighbor shovel her walk, giving that extra change or dollar in the bucket for the frozen volunteer ringing the bell outside of the store your walking out of. Christmas is giving your time to donate to the local shelter whether it’s blankets, money or service. How about giving blood to the American Red Cross (they have great cookies). Since the time of Christ’s birth, the spirit of giving gifts has been present in the mind of each Christian as he or she commemorates the Christmas season. Our Heavenly Father gave us his son, Jesus Christ. This precious son gave us his life, the atonement and victory over the grave. What will you and I give for Christmas this year? Let us in our lives give to our Lord and Savior the gift of gratitude by living his teachings and following in his footsteps. It was said of him that he “went around doing good” (Acts 10:38). As we do likewise, the Christmas spirit will be ours. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Give Yourself Some ‘Paychecks’ for Retirement SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN During your working years, you’ve probably met the costs of living through your salary. But once you retire, where will the money come from? Is there a way to give yourself a “paycheck” for retirement? There is indeed – but you’ll have to do a good job of managing your available income sources. Here are some moves that can help: Accept dividends and interest payments. Instead of automatically reinvesting all your dividends and interest payments into your portfolio – which is an excellent strategy for building wealth – you might want to begin receiving these payments as part of your income. Keep in mind, though, that companies can lower or discontinue dividends at any time. However, it’s also true that some companies have consistently paid, and even increased, dividends over many years, and even decades. Choose an appropriate withdrawal rate. Once you’re retired, you’ll likely need to begin withdrawing from your investment accounts. But you’ll need to avoid taking out too much early in your retirement – you don’t want to risk outliving your portfolio. For many people in their mid-60s, a 4% annual withdrawal rate is a good starting point, but everyone’s situation is different, and your ideal rate will depend on several factors: your age, the size of your portfolio, other sources of income, and so on. Once you turn 72, you’ll be required to take at least a minimum amount from your traditional IRA and 401(k), but you can choose to withdraw more, if necessary. Maximize your Social Security. You have significant control over the amounts you’ll receive from Social Security. You can begin taking these payments at age 62, but they will be much larger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. (You will receive the maximum amount if you wait until you reach 70.) So, if you think you have enough income from

other sources, you might decide to delay taking Social Security – but if you need the money, you may not be able to wait. And here’s something else to think about: If your spouse had considerably higher earnings than you did, you may be eligible for spousal benefits. Consider an annuity. You might want to consider purchasing an annuity that provides lifetime payments. Some annuities are even indexed for inflation, meaning payments will increase or decrease each year, keeping pace with the Consumer Price Index. Annuities are not suitable for everyone, though, so, before investing in one, you should consult with a financial professional who is familiar with your situation.* Finally, don’t rule out the possibility of earned income. Just because you’ve retired from your full-time job doesn’t mean you can’t work in some capacity, perhaps by doing some part-time work or consulting or even opening your own small business. Look at all these ideas when thinking about putting together an income plan for your retirement. You may find that your diligence will pay off.
