Have you ever had to choke down a cup of something nasty?

I loved to visit my grandparents’ farm. But I dreaded breakfast. My beloved grandmother would set a cup of farmfresh milk by my plate every breakfast. Only, it was lumpy milk. Clumps of butterfat floated on the surface. I avoided that cup as long as I could until my mother inevitably gave me a look across the table and pointed emphatically at the cup. Grimacing, I tossed it back quickly, feeling the lumps slide down my throat. Ugh.

Yet that was nothing compared with the cup Jesus had to drink. Hours before his death, Jesus fell on his face in a garden and begged, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me” (Luke 22:42a, ESV). What cup provoked such visceral horror in the heart of our Lord Jesus?

It was a cup filled to the brim with God’s wrath against our sin. “For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs” (Psalm 75:8, ESV).

Jesus had only ever known his Father’s warmth, his smile, his affection. Yet he was about to sustain the full brunt of God’s anger against human sin on the cross. He was about to go through hell on earth. And he shrank back in horror. “Father, is there any other way for me to save lost humanity?” “No, my son,” his Father says, “this is the only way.” The son replies, “Not my will, but yours be done.” Then he rises to fulfill his horrible mission for our salvation.

Now that’s love! Stay tuned for more next week.
