Black History Month event at MWRD focuses on environmental justice and advocating for equity

Raising awareness for environmental justice, equity and the African American experience, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) continued its tradition of Black History Month programming and celebration by hosting a forum that featured a talented lineup of insightful speakers.

For the first time since 2020, the MWRD held its Black History Month celebration, convening a panel of speakers to highlight African American History Month, while bringing important issues to the forefront in the MWRD’s work protecting the region’s water environment. Watch the event video soon at mwrd.org or on our YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/@mwrdgc/videos.

“Our Black History Month event presents an evening to celebrate, commemorate and highlight our work in the context of equity and diversity,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “We take into consideration environmental justice protections in our work to protect area water quality, and tonight’s forum elevates this important work for the diverse communities we serve. Thank you all for helping us celebrate and contribute to this conversation.”

Speakers included MWRD President Steele and Vice President Kimberly Du Buclet, along with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Chicago Urban League President and CEO Karen Freeman-Wilson and MWRD Environmental Justice Section Principal Civil Engineer Lolita Thompson. A panel, moderated by WBEZ Data Projects Editor Alden Loury, featured Blacks in Green™ Founder/CEO Naomi Davis, People for Community Recovery Executive Director Cheryl Johnson, SEIU Healthcare President Greg Kelley and Faith in Place Policy/Advocacy Director Pastor Scott Onqué. Speakers were recognized earlier that day with a resolution introduced by the MWRD Board of Commissioners.

The panel discussed environmental justice issues and how community leaders and others advocate for equity. The event follows the MWRD’s recent adoption of a new policy to integrate environmental justice considerations into all MWRD programs, policies and activities wherever possible. The MWRD is in the middle of a five-year Strategic Plan, 2021-2025, that expanded its values from excellence, respect, innovation, safety and accountability, to also include equity and diversity.

“We appreciate the opportunity to bring so many unique perspectives together for one night to commemorate Black History Month and advance causes of justice and equity in our region,” said MWRD Vice President Kimberly Du Buclet. “Thank you to the many guests and staff who attended and made this a memorable occasion.”

The event at the MWRD’s McGowan Main Office Building, 100 E. Erie St., was part of a series of Black History Month festivities this February. On Feb. 1, the MWRD raised the Pan-African flag at the Building as well as at all seven of its water reclamation plants.

Participants in the MWRD’s Black History Month celebration and panel included (Front row, L-R): MWRD Environmental Justice Section Principal Civil Engineer Lolita Thompson, People for Community Recovery Executive Director Cheryl Johnson, Blacks in Green™ Founder/CEO Naomi Davis, Faith in Place Policy/Advocacy Director Pastor Scott Onqué, SEIU Healthcare President Greg Kelley and WBEZ Data Projects Editor Alden Loury. (Back row, L-R): MWRD Executive Director Brian A. Perkovich, MWRD Chairman of Finance Commissioner Marcelino Garcia, MWRD Vice President Kimberly Du Buclet, MWRD President Kari K. Steele, MWRD Commissioner Yumeka Brown and MWRD Commissioner Daniel Pogorzelski.

On Feb. 22, the MWRD held a virtual business roundtable to discuss how community leaders advocate for equity in contracting and how minority-owned business enterprises can learn more about business opportunities with the MWRD. MWRD staff, including Diversity Administrator Regina Berry, Director of Engineering Catherine O’Connor, and Director of Procurement and Materials Management Darlene LoCascio participated in the roundtable with area business leaders including Larry Ivory, President/CEO at the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce; Jonathan Jones, Director of Diversity, Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council - Labor Brother’s United and Omar Shareef, President, African American Contractor’s Association.

The MWRD will also participate in the Black Creativity Career Showcase at the Museum of Science and Industry, 5700 S. Du Sable Lake Shore Drive to engage students in STEM careers and shed light on the important work of the MWRD protecting the region’s water environment.

The Art and Design Dept. of SSC Present an Exhibition by Jon Seals

The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition entitled “Sand, Silt & Other Sorrows” by Jon Seals. The series of mixed media art will be on display in the Photo Four Gallery at SSC from Wednesday, March 1 - Thursday, April 20, 2023, with an artist talk and reception on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, from 1-2 p.m., in the Photo Four Gallery.

Seals is a conceptual artist, teacher, and curator. He holds a Master of Arts in Religion from Yale Divinity School and Yale Institute of Sacred Music and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. Seals have exhibited his artwork in solo and group art exhibitions in galleries and colleges throughout the United States and have curated an annual art exhibition at Yale’s

Institute of Sacred Music. His artistic practice explores how identity relates to memory, loss, and redemption in visual culture.

“I create mixed-media works with materials harvested directly from bodies of water and land with severe shifts in natural environments. Artworks are created by pouring, dipping, and combining handdrawn and painted elements using the materials collected. I work directly from the soil, water, and plant life”, stated Seals.

The SSC Photo Four Gallery is open Monday-Thursday, 9-5 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. Post Pandemic Truth Searching

How do we navigate the future? A challenging question and most of us have our own thoughts. We now live in the information age where a lot of good and bad data is at our fingertips, literally, at the touch of our phone or laptop. We just need to filter through it to determine what is good and what is bad. People of different professions have different perspectives and concerns on this question too, be it psychiatrists, economists, small and large business owners, landlords and even Realtors. And let us not forget the politicians whose perspectives and agenda can largely be driven by which side of the isle they are on. I always try to look at things objectively and take the positive approach, no matter how difficult and complicated that might be.

Let’s consider the phrase “New Normal”. What exactly is “New Normal”, what of it will remain in the future and what will fade away? This rhetorical term was stated by the same politicians and news networks over and over. Their messages have been mixed and convoluted at best. Wear a mask, wear double masks, don’t wear a mask, eating inside vs eating outside, same household gathering, not gathering, singing in church ok, singing not ok, I could go on and on. One message remained constant – Wash your hands! And isn’t it rather disturbing that we actually need to have that sign in our public restrooms? Having been bombarded with all this conflicting information the last 3 years, these very same politicians now tell us that after certain dates we can forgo masks, distancing and capacity restrictions (provided you are vaccinated) because everything after these dates will be fine! REALLY? People have been scared to death.

P.L.O.W. through the S.N.O.W.

I’ve been struggling with accomplishing my goals for my personal, business, career, health, and spiritual life. It seemed like there were roadblocks and struggles in every direction. Then one day, I heard in the distance a large street plow coming. It’s doing its job to PLOW through the SNOW, ice, and sleet to clear the roads to make them easier to maneuver. I felt in my soul God saying to me P.L.O.W. through the S.N.O.W. I questioned what that meant. Then it came like a bolt. It’s P: pray and praise; L: listen; O: obey; W: walk and work; through the S: situations; N: negativity; O: obstacles and objections; and W: weaknesses and warfare: with God’s help. For me to accomplish the plans and purposes God has implanted in me, I need to PLOW to remove the SNOW that was preventing me from action. Then God put in my heart to remember that God cannot be defeated. “If God is for us, who is against us?” (Romans 8:31), “but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26 NIV).

How do we implement PLOW to remove the SNOW?

First, we must PRAY to and PRAISE the Lord. Just talk about what’s concerning you and praise the Lord for all things, the good and the bad.

Second, we must LISTEN. Sometimes we need to be quiet and pay attention to what we hear.

Third, we must OBEY what we heard. Children don’t always want to listen to what their parents say, but those instructions are vital to our success.

Lastly, we must WALK and WORK out the

plans, instructions, and details. Work the plan and the plan will work. Do not be afraid to walk, work or stumble. FEAR stops most movement. God does not say there will be no bad SITUATIONS, NEGATIVITY, OBSTACLES/ OBJECTIONS, OR WEAKNESSES/WARFARE. SITUATIONS, good and bad, are apart of life. When situations arise, we must draw on God’s strength as we cannot do this alone. God never promised easy. God does say He will provide us the strength, courage, peace and love to get us through SNOW. We must fight off and dismiss NEGATIVITY in comments, thoughts and reactions that will throw us off focus. Negativity comes from ourselves, others around us, and the world. OBSTACLES/OBJECTIONS need to be removed out the way. Think of the large snowplow that has to go around all the vehicles and trash cans but does not stop until the job is accomplished. We all have WEAKNESSES and WARFARE battles to overcome. God equips us with HIS armor and strength so we can defeat and remove what’s against us.

By using the power given to us by God, we can pray, praise, listen, obey, walk and work our way through to accomplish what the Lord has planned for us. Plans to prosper us and not to harm us, to remove and break through the situation that will arise, fight negativity, overcome obstacles and objections, remove our weaknesses and warfare to be victorious.

Indiana American Water and American Water Charitable Foundation Announce $10,000 Donation to Urban League of Northwest Indiana

We are terrified for anyone to see us sneeze or cough for fear of alarming them – is it an allergy, a cold, or is it the dreaded COVID?

I have watched certain states lock down way longer than others. My radar and red flag go up when politicians start offering bribes, incentives, and lottery ticket opportunities to take the vaccine. When I look closely at pictures of politicians and celebrities getting the vaccine, I am not convinced the jab really went in. Call me suspicious but all this gives me reasons to pause. Admittedly, I have many questions and doubts, one being if the vaccine is so effective, why are those that got vaccinated so concerned about being with people that have not? Aren’t they protected with an annual vaccine and boosters? What about the potential serious side effects or even mortal consequences? Are there longterm side effects? These are just a few questions that are swirling in my head. My Christian faith and my way of thinking on this goes along with my always having to be honest and straightforward. These are “my” opinions, and anyone that knows me or has worked with me knows that my client’s best interest is always first and foremost in my agency relationships. If a client cannot accept my candor, then I am not the Realtor for them. I do my best not to judge others for their opinions and hope they would return that effort when I state my truths. Thank you for reading…

Indiana American Water today announced the American Charitable Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization established by American Water, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, and American Water’s General Counsel Jim Gallegos have made a total donation of $200,000 to the National Urban League and the Affiliate Movement, including a $10,000 donation to the Urban League of Northwest Indiana. The funding will enhance the ULNWI’s efforts to help close the equality gap for African Americans and other historically underserved groups throughout American Water’s national footprint.

“The American Water Charitable Foundation is proud to partner with the National Urban League and the Affiliate Movement, supporting impactful initiatives and programs that help to prepare future leaders of tomorrow,” said Carrie Williams, President, American Water Charitable Foundation. “We remain committed to strengthening our inclusion, diversity, equity and equality principles by supporting organizations such as the Urban League, which helps uplift and empower those they serve. This donation is particularly meaningful as we celebrate Black History Month in February.”

Founded in 1910, the National Urban League is a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment, equality and social justice. The Urban League spearheads the development of social programs, public policy research and advocates for policies and services

that close the equality gap.

“Indiana American Water’s donation to the Urban League of Northwest Indiana will further enhance our efforts to assist clients in securing education and inclusion, diversity and equity opportunities,” said ULNWI President and CEO Dr. Vanessa Allen McCloud. “Education translates into them being able to identify opportunities that improve the quality of life for their families and become more informed on ways to support our local economy. It’s a win for everyone.”

Originally established in 1945 as the Urban League of Gary, the Urban League of Northwest Indiana works to promote, encourage and enhance services to improve social, educational, and economic conditions of African Americans and other minority groups in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties.

“We are committed to northwest Indiana and to making it a better place to live and work for everyone,” said Indiana American Water President Matt Prine. “Giving back and being a good neighbor to our partner communities is a core part of who we are as a company, and we’re pleased to lend support to the Urban League’s efforts here.”

Since 2012, the American Water Charitable Foundation has donated to worthy causes and organizations in communities served by American Water. Being a good neighbor and steward of the environment has always been central to the mission of American Water.

Last week, we saw Jesus wrestling in prayer with his Father. He shrank back in horror at the prospect of choking down a cup filled with his Father’s wrath against sin.

He rose from prayer, however, resolved to do his Father’s will for our salvation. “Your will be done,” he said. Jesus overcame his temptation to go AWOL from his mission as humanity’s Representative.

Only two humans in world history have made crucial decisions as Representatives for the entire human race: the First Adam and the Final Adam (Jesus).

The First Adam enjoyed perfect blessing in fellowship with God in the Garden of Eden. The Final Adam felt the crushing weight of God’s curse in the Garden of Gethsemane. The First Adam, tempted by Satan, rebelled against God and said, “My will be done.” The Final Adam, tempted by Satan, obeyed God and said, “Thy will be done.” The First Adam rebelled on our behalf, bringing down sin’s corruption and God’s curse on his descendants and all creation. The Final Adam obeyed on our behalf, reversing Adam’s curse for all who turn from their rebellion and sin to trust in him.

“For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19, NIV84).

As our Representative, Jesus shares his righteous status before God with all who repent (confess and turn from their sin and rebellion) and trust in him and his obedience on their behalf. Then he fills us with his Holy Spirit who empowers us to pray that we may not fall into temptation (Luke 22:40) and to say, “Your will be done.”

Habitat for Humanity & South Shore Roller Derby Join Forces to Empower Women Through Women Build Get HELP with DEBT

Habitat for Humanity and South Shore Roller Derby has announced a new partnership aimed at empowering women and helping to provide affordable housing solutions in the local community. This collaboration is part of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build initiative, which focuses on engaging women in the construction of safe and affordable homes for families in need.

The partnership will involve members of South Shore Roller Derby volunteering their time and skills to assist in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home in Lake County, Indiana. The Women Build program provides an opportunity for women to take an active role in the construction process and develop new skills while also helping to provide a safe and decent home for a local family in need.

“We are thrilled to partner with South Shore Roller Derby for Women Build,” said Dawn Michaels, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana. “Their dedication to supporting women and building strong, inclusive communities is exactly what Women Build is all about. We believe that by working together, we can create a better future for women and families in our community.”

Through this partnership, members of South Shore Roller Derby will volunteer their time and skills to help build homes in the community. They will also work to raise funds and awareness for Women Build, helping to ensure that everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home. South Shore Roller Derby is hosting three bouts and encourages attendees to make a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana. The bouts are scheduled on March 11th at the Hammond Civic Center, doors open at 5 pm and the bout starts at 5:30 pm. The remaining bouts are scheduled for June 24 in Crown Point at Bull Dog Park, and September 16 at Urschel

Pavillion in Valparaiso, times to be announced soon.

“South Shore Roller Derby is proud to support Women Build and the mission of Habitat for Humanity,” said Ellen Kapitan, Board President of South Shore Roller Derby. “We are excited to work alongside women in our community to build homes and build a better future. Roller derby is all about empowering women, and we are thrilled to extend that empowerment to the construction site.”

The partnership between Habitat for Humanity and South Shore Roller Derby is a testament to the power of community and the importance of empowering women. Together, these organizations will make a real difference in the lives of families in Lake County, Indiana.

If you’re getting closer to retirement, you might be thinking more about Social Security. Specifically, can you count on it to contribute part of the income you’ll need as a retiree?

There’s been an increase in alarming language surrounding the solvency of Social Security, but in reality, its prospects are not nearly as gloomy as you might have heard.

Here’s the story: Under current law, Social Security is estimated to exhaust its trust funds by 2035, after which benefits could be cut by 20%, according to the 2022 Social Security Trustees report. However, the large cost of living adjustment (COLA) (8.7%) for 2023 could cause the trust funds to use up their resources sooner.

But this outlook may represent a worstcase scenario. For one thing, the cost of the 2023 COLA will be somewhat offset by higher taxes on workers contributing to Social Security. The maximum amount of earnings subject to the 6.2% Social Security tax jumped from $147,000 in 2022 to $160,200 in 2023. And in looking down the road, further increases in this earnings cap may also help reduce the gap in the trust funds. Increasing the payroll tax is another possibility for boosting funding to Social Security.

And here’s a political reality: Social Security is a popular program and it’s unlikely that any future Congress wants to be blamed for reducing benefits. Of course, there are no guarantees, but it seems fair to say that you can reasonably expect some benefits from Social Security when you retire.

But perhaps the bigger issue is just how much you should depend on Social Security for your retirement income. On average, Social Security benefits will provide about 30% of a beneficiary’s preretirement earnings, according to the Social Security Administration. But the higher your earnings

before you retire, the lower the percentage that will be replaced by Social Security.

Still, you’ll want to maximize the benefits that are available to you — and that means deciding when to start taking Social Security. You can begin as early as 62, but your monthly payments could be as much as 30% lower than your normal (or “full”) retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67.

Even if you were to wait until your full retirement age before collecting Social Security, you’ll also need to draw on other sources of funding. So, while you are still working, it’s a good idea to keep contributing to your IRA and 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan.

The amount you contribute should depend on your overall financial strategy and your financial needs, so, for example, you probably shouldn’t put in so much into your retirement accounts that you feel significant stress in your monthly cash flow. But when you do get a chance to invest more in these accounts, such as when your salary goes up, you may want to take advantage of the opportunity.

Ultimately, you should be able to count on Social Security as part of your retirement income. You may want to consult with a financial professional to determine when taking Social Security makes the most sense for you and how you can also get the most from your other retirement accounts. You’ll want a retirement income strategy that’s built for the long run.

Lowell Client Forgot

On February 21, 2023, I got a bill from a client in Lowell, Indiana. It was on my desk when I arrived at the office.

The client was getting a bill for $147.19 from a medical firm. The client did not know why she was getting the bill. I checked it for her.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to her after I checked the bill to make sure it was legitimate and accurate.

You sent us a bill from (the medical firm) and asked us to check it.

The bill seeks $147.19. It is your bill. You should pay it. Here is why.

You bought a Plan G Medicare supplement policy. Plan G policies DO NOT pay the Medicare Part B annual deductible. This year, that figure is $226.

The bill for $147.19 was for date of service 1/13/23. Another bill for date of service 01/04/23 was $78.81. Those two bills add to exactly $226. You are responsible for paying these bills because Medicare counted them to add to your Medicare Part B

annual deductible.

Thank you for allowing us to help you with your insurance needs. If you have any questions, please contact your insurance agent.

Checking on medical bills that our clients question is one of the things that I do for our clients. The Medicare system is not perfect and it is not run by people who are perfect. When a medical bill needs to be checked for a client, we do that without charge. It is one way that we demonstrate that we really care for our clients. If your insurance agent does not give the same high standard of help to clients, why not switch to our insurance agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: We contracted to buy a home on the 1st of the month. Closing is in 45 days. Ten days prior to closing there was a huge storm which took down a large tree in the backyard and damaged the house. Is the seller obligated to fix the house and replace the tree?

Answer: At the time you bought the property, the day the contract was signed, you purchased a home with a given physical condition -- not perfect, but as you saw it. The seller has an obligation to deliver the property in substantially the same condition as it was on the contract date.

In the situation you describe it’s likely that the owner’s insurance will cover some or all of the bill. If the repairs are not completed by closing, then establish an “escrow” or trust account at from the seller’s funds at closing to assure that the work is completed.

As to the tree, it was going to fall at some point. The storm was plainly an act of nature. The owner is obligated to clean up. If you’re on good terms with the seller, maybe ask for firewood.

Question: Four months ago we saw a house we liked and said we were interested, but didn’t make a firm offer at that time. The owner now wants to take the home off the market. Is there any way we can make an offer on the house?

Answer: An owner is not obligated to eternally offer a home for sale. You could have made a written offer when the owner was actively marketing the property.

You can still make an offer -- I have had people approach me to buy property which was not for sale. But an owner has no obligation to review an offer or accept it.

VAN BEEK

Roger Glenn Van Beek, 83, of Lansing Illinois passed from this life to his home in heaven on Sunday, February 19, surrounded by his family. Roger was born on November 14, 1939, in Pittstown, New Jersey to Peter and Nellie (Noteboom) Van Beek. He was the third of six children. In his school years, the family moved from New Jersey to California to Illinois before settling in Wisconsin. Roger grew up farming, but chose not to follow that path. He always gave 110% to all he did including his family, work and service to the Lord. Roger married Janice Dykema on March 18, 1960. They were blessed with three children Randy (Ruth) Van Beek of Lansing Illinois, Sandy (Joe) Mulder of Delavan Wisconsin and Paul (Gail) Van Beek of Pella Iowa. He was a devoted husband and father. He was a loving grandfather to thirteen grandchildren Ryan (Olivia), Jeff (Laura), Alexa, Andrea, Ross (Amy), Jon (Susan), Andrew (Meghan), Jared (Maggie), Hannah, Abby, Nick (Jori), Jeremy (Ashley), and Emily. Roger and Janice also are blessed with ten great grandchildren. He loved his family dearly and had no greater joy than to know each one walked with the Lord. Roger was an avid Cubs fan and a loyal Packers fan. He loved to play sports and was proud to talk about his basketball career in HS. Although his education ended with high school, he encouraged his children to pursue college. He loved to sing, and was a member of the Crusaders quartet for 17 years. His love for sports and music were passed on to his children and made him a faithful spectator at many of his grandchildren’s athletic events, concerts, plays and musicals. Roger was devoted to Christian education and served as a school board member in his children’s school. He served several terms as an elder in churches in WI and IL, was a Sunday School teacher and Cadet leader. Roger was a man of deep faith and was always ready to give an answer for the hope that was in him. He was known to share that faith with his family, with neighbors, with travelers and workers at the Oasis where he walked, with his coffee buddies at McDonalds and all those who provided his health care. In his last days, he continued to share that faith in the hospital and was known by all the nurses for his singing. After working in the building industry for 17 years in Wisconsin, he fulfilled a dream to be in ministry when he began to work at Bible League International in 1985 as the vice-president of finance. During his 22 years of service, he helped guide the ministry finances, visited field offices in several foreign countries and led the building project for the current facility in Crete, Illinois. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His brother Lynn and sister Char, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Gerald, Donald and Clifford. Visitation will be held Friday, February 24, 2023 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home in Dyer, Indiana. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 9:45 a.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. at Crete Church 24755 S. Country Lane, Crete, IL with services conducted by Rev. Gerald Erffmeyer. A private family burial will be held prior to the service at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lansing, IL.
