Small businesses can take advantage of Paycheck Protection Program The U.S. Small Business Administration recently resumed the Paycheck Protection Program, and eligible small businesses can apply for the low-interest loans, according to State Reps.

Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) and Hal Slager (R-Schererville).

Aylesworth said the Small Business Association is accepting PPP loan applications from eligible first-time borrowers and those who previously received a loan. The loan can be used to help cover payroll costs, including benefits, mortgage interest, rent, utilities and worker protection costs related to COVID-19.

“Resuming the Paycheck Protection Program is good news for small businesses dealing with the impacts of the pandemic,” Aylesworth said. “This recovery has been a long process, and our Hoosier businesses in need of extra help should take a look at the program and consider applying.”

According to Slager, PPP loans help businesses suffering financial losses from COVID-19 to weather the storm. Small businesses are eligible if they have no more than 300 employees and have experienced at least a 25% reduction in gross receipts from quarter to quarter in 2019 and 2020.

“This second round of PPP loans provides small businesses an opportunity to recover some of their expenses over the past year,” Slager said. “The program can help businesses stay open and continue providing much-needed services to their local communities and our state.”

SBA is currently accepting applications from participating lenders, and businesses must apply by March 31, 2021. These loans have a five-year payback period, and initial payments can be deferred.

As Realtors, I know that sometimes you feel like you are fighting an uphill battle in today’s market. It’s hard to keep motivated after the deal falls apart or you run a buyer around for a whole day, just to find out that because of the market conditions it is impossible to purchase a condo because of the 60% owner occupancy isn’t there for the complex. Constantly fighting with lenders for appraisal values. Explaining to shellshocked sellers that their homes are worth less than they owe on their mortgages. Our industry is like the stock market, scary to watch and even scarier to participate!

I think it takes a very strong person, business wise and emotionally to be a Realtor today. You need to constantly reinvent skills and navigate through endless problems and rule changes.

I’m blessed to have been in this business for 40 years. I have seen good times and bad, but I feel that we do not need ice water running through our veins and nerves of steel to survive in these interesting times. We just need a heart and an outlook that can be focused on the good we do when we have a successful closing.

One of my recent closings helped a young couple get started in home ownership. One

of my closings helped wrap up an estate so the survivors could move on and another closing helped a couple move into something much better suited to their retirement.

It’s still a good business to be in…you just can’t spend much time thinking about the lender who torpedoes the closing at the last minute, or the divorcing husband that files for bankruptcy in the middle of a short sale, or the buyer that abandons you and buys a FSBO without telling you. This business is a lot like a walk in the park. You can choose to ignore the doggy poo and just step over it, noticing that it’s a beautiful sunny day. Or you can step right in it because some inconsiderate doggy left it there, and complain about the dog the rest of the day. Choose the first option – at least the smell won’t follow you around all day!

That was last week’s theme. We discussed who and what we try to control. We discussed how we try to control them.

We discussed why we try to control them. We discussed the consequences of control-worship.

Our efforts to gain control leave us enslaved to the god of control. How can we escape?

Ask God to plant this core truth deep in your gut: “God is in control.” Often, this is a cliché, a bit of ‘head theology’ we rattle off at the right moment in a conversation. But when this becomes your ‘heart theology’, it changes your life.

Psalm 33:10-11 says, “The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.

The counsel of the LORD stands forever; the plans of his heart to all generations” (ESV).

However, it’s not enough to know that God is in control. We need to know, “This God who is in control – who is he? Can I be sure he’s capable of running the universe and cares about me?”

Absolutely. Read Psalm 33 and Romans 8:28-39. All who surrender to his care and control can rest in his almighty power and fatherly care as his children. If you doubt it, look at the cross where Jesus died for you. See there God’s power and love.

Reflect on this beautiful, Bible-based statement of faith: “I trust him so much that I do not doubt he will provide for all I need, body and soul, and that he will turn to my good whatever adversity he sends me in this sad world. He is able to do this because he is almighty God. He desires to do this because he is a faithful Father” (Heidelberg Catechism, Answer 26b).

How Can Women Overcome Obstacles to Financial Security?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN On March 8, we observe International Women’s Day, a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Of course, women still tend to encounter more obstacles than men in the pursuit of financial security. Let’s consider a few of them.

To begin with, women are still more likely to leave the workforce, at least temporarily, to raise children, resulting in lower contributions to employer-sponsored retirement plans such as 401(k)s. And women are often the ones who become full-time caregivers of aging parents or other relatives. Caregiving duties can exact a big financial toll: The lost wages, pensions (including 401(k)s and similar plans) and Social Security benefits that a woman loses to become a full-time caregiver amount to more than $300,000 over her lifetime, according to the National Academy of Sciences.

Women also may be more susceptible to financial downturns. Consider the COVID-19 pandemic: Just a few months ago, in December, women lost 156,000 jobs, while men gained 16,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which also reported that women accounted for 54% of the jobs lost from the pandemic in 2020.

And women are not unaware of their circumstances and outlook. Just 41% of women are confident about retirement, compared with 56% of men, according to a survey by Edward Jones and Age Wave.

But if you’re a woman, you can take steps to help improve your financial outlook. Here are a few suggestions: Take full advantage of retirement plans If you are still working and your employer offers a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it. Put in as much as you can afford each year and increase your

contributions when your salary goes up.

Also, within your plan, you’ll want to choose the mix of investments that can help provide the most growth potential, given your individual risk tolerance. Also, even if you contribute to a 401(k) or similar plan, you may also be eligible to fund an IRA, which gives you even more investment choices.

Evaluate your Social Security options You can typically start taking Social Security benefits when you’re 62, but your monthly checks will be much larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. You might also consider whether you’d be better off by taking spousal benefits, if you’re married and your spouse earned more money than you. You’re generally even eligible for spousal benefits if you are divorced, as long as you were married at least 10 years and you haven’t remarried.

Look for unexpected income opportunities Even after you’ve formally retired, you may still find ways to receive some earned income. Perhaps you can work part time or do some consulting. And if you’re a caregiver, you might be able to receive some compensation for your work. Many local governments pay non-spouse caregivers who act as personal attendants, although the rules vary greatly by state and county.

These certainly aren’t the only ways you can improve your financial status, but they may prove useful to you. In any case, be aware of the challenges facing you and do whatever you can to brighten your future.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: What is happening in the current real estate market? We have friends who just sold, and they had multiple offers over full price.

Answer: The answer is basic economics.

Low supply and high demand = Higher Prices. There are very few homes for sale as compared to previous years, so the many buyers are competing with other buyers for the same home.

We’ve reached a point where buyers are offering thousands of dollars over the asking price, in hopes that the seller will be elated with the price and take their inflated offer.

This brings up a couple of questions. Will the buyer qualify for this increase in sales price?

Will the home appraise out at the higher sales price? Remember, the lender has an appraiser out to ensure that the buyer isn’t overpaying for this home and the lender doesn’t want to be stuck with an overpriced home if the buyer defaults on the loan. But

this seems to be the strategy that buyers and their agents are using. They offer high to get the offer accepted, then hope that the appraised value is closer to the original list price and that the seller will still accept this new, appraised value.

The problem is the seller does not have to accept the lower appraised price and the buyer will have spent hundreds of dollars for the cost of the home inspection and appraisal. Some buyers are willing to take this chance, other buyers do not want to be in a bidding war.

This crazy, low inventory market simply means: Advantage Seller!

DISHONEST DOUBLETALK WOODROW WILCOX One of our clients got unexpected bills after she went for testing of the Covid-19 virus.

She thought that the testing was free. But she got bills for it.

Our client even phoned her Medicare Advantage plan insurance company and got verbal assurances that she would not have to pay anything for the Covid-19 tests. But she got billed anyway.

On February 10, I made a three way call with our client to her Medicare Advantage policy insurance company. I was surprised by the representative’s explanation of the bills that our client received. The representative said that the test for Covid-19 is free to our client but that the visit to the clinic that gave her the test is not free. What??????

This sounds like dishonest doubletalk to me. In my 18 years of helping senior citizens fight mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system, this kind of dishonest doubletalk usually comes from federal government

agencies and officials. It has not usually come from private insurance companies.

How is a person supposed to get tested for Covid-19 without going somewhere to get the test done? If the public is told that the test is free but not warned that going to a clinic or other facility to get the test will cost them money, isn’t that dishonest doubletalk?

I believe it is.

So, I wrote this article to warn the public about this dishonest doubletalk. Before you get the “free” testing for Covid-19, you should ask if you will be charged for the visit to the place where you get the test.

Tooth Fairy thrifty in the Midwest while other states see over $5 per tooth The Tooth Fairy continues to give Midwestern kids the least amount of money for a lost tooth, while other areas of the country are seeing significant increases in giving despite the pandemic.

Children in the Midwest receive an average of $3.66 for a lost tooth – down a nickel from last year, according to the latest Original Tooth Fairy Poll results released by Delta Dental of Illinois.

Meanwhile, about half the kids in the nation are receiving more than $5 a tooth. The West saw a nearly $2 increase over the past two years, up to $5.54. The Northeast continues to lead the nation with a giving rate of $5.72. And the South saw a modest increase to $4.45.

“Regardless of the dollar amount, many families have fun anticipating the arrival of the Tooth Fairy to celebrate the loss of a tooth,” said Dr. Sheila Strock, vice president of dental services and science officer at Delta Dental of Illinois. “Preparing for a visit from the Tooth Fairy is a great opportunity for parents to educate their children about the importance of good oral health habits such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating and drinking tooth-friendly foods and beverages, and visiting the dentist regularly.”

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Feb. 28 is National Tooth Fairy Day. Parents say Tooth Fairy visits not only help their children develop good oral health habits, but also

give them something to be excited about. In fact, more than 1 in 4 parents said a visit from the Tooth Fairy was one of their child’s favorite surprises during the pandemic. Kids often go to bed earlier when they’re expecting a visit from the Tooth Fairy and tend to save their Tooth Fairy earnings.

The Original Tooth Fairy Poll has typically mirrored the economy’s overall direction, tracking with Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) for 16 of the past 19 years. Last year, a single lost tooth was valued at $4.03 nationwide, and this year’s survey shows upward growth to $4.70, a 17% increase. Over the same time period, the S&P 500 also experienced growth with a 19% increase, reaching its highest average since the inception of the Original Tooth Fairy survey.

Delta Dental has been analyzing the Tooth Fairy’s U.S. annual giving trends since 1998. The newly disclosed national value of a lost tooth has more than tripled since its inception, when the value of a lost tooth was $1.30. This year’s national giving rate is the highest cash gift in the history of the survey.

Nursing Homes Set Goal To Get 75% Of Staff Vaccinated By June 30 The American Health Care Association (AHCA), representing more than 14,000 nursing homes and long term care facilities across the country, and LeadingAge, the association of more than 5,000 mission-driven aging services providers including nursing homes, announced today, with the help of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the nationwide goal of getting 75 percent of the approximately 1.5 million nursing home staff vaccinated by June 30, 2021.

“With COVID-19 vaccinations being distributed across long term care facilities over the past two months, we have already seen a decline in cases in nursing homes, indicating that the vaccines are working,” said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA. “Many of our staff continue to be excited about the vaccines and the hope they represent, but some caregivers still have questions. We are continuing to inform our staff about the credibility and safety of the vaccines through our #GetVaccinated campaign, and we hope this goal will further encourage more of our staff members to get the vaccine.”

In December, AHCA launched #GetVaccinated, a nationwide campaign that aims to encourage all long term care residents, families and staff members to consent to the vaccine as well as provide credible information to help inform their decision.

“Achieving a high rate of staff vaccinations will be a game changer for nursing homes. Real progress has been made in vaccinating nursing home residents. Now we must also achieve high rates of staff vaccinations,” said Katie Smith Sloan, president and CEO of LeadingAge. “It’s critical to acknowledge the reasons for vaccine hesitancy are real and varied, and staff concerns must be understood and thoughtfully addressed as we work toward this goal. LeadingAge is committed to doing all we can with our

partners and the Administration to ensure staff at our missiondriven members—at nursing homes and other care settings— have the information, conversations and support they need to get vaccinated.”

LeadingAge, in partnership with the Black Coalition Against COVID (BCAC), is sponsoring a national town hall Thursday, March 4 to address concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine among all levels of staff working in aging services communities. The association also regularly shares important vaccine resources and hosts special webinars to connect members with experts on vaccine education.

According to a preliminary analysis, COVID cases decreased at a faster rate among nursing homes that had completed their first vaccine clinic, compared to those nearby that had not yet administered the vaccine in the first month of the vaccine rollout.

Recent Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) data shows cases and deaths in nursing homes are declining rapidly, which hopefully indicates the vaccines are reducing the spread of the virus, according to AHCA. “We look forward to working with President Biden’s Administration and the CDC to make this goal happen,” added Parkinson.

“We cannot chance slowing the positive progress we have already made. Long term care facilities have been at the forefront of the pandemic since the beginning and our staff care for some of the most susceptible to the virus, making it even more imperative that their caregivers get vaccinated. The sooner we can get more of our staff vaccinated, the sooner we will be able to defeat this deadly virus.”

If you’re in a crunch for St. Patrick’s Day and need something glowing with green, here is a dessert that is sure to have everyone coming back for seconds (and more).

These Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies are as green as four-leaf clovers and have delicious chocolate chips mixed throughout for some extra sweet flavor. Served beside a big glass of milk, they are perfect treats for any St. Patrick’s Day party or virtual gathering.

To start the recipe, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, add butter, sugar, eggs, green food coloring and peppermint extract for that crisp mint flavor. Beat with a hand mixture and combine the ingredients in both bowls together.

Add chocolate chips to the mixed cookie batter. Scoop onto a baking sheet and bake at 375 F for 11-24 minutes until the edges of the cookies are light brown. Cool on a wire rack before devouring.

With so much mixing and scooping to be done, this is a great recipe for kids to get involved in the kitchen, too. One of the best parts is the eye-catching color. Watch children’s smiling little faces as the batter turns from light brown to dark green for a priceless reaction.

After being perfectly baked, these cookies are bright, fun and will be the hit of any celebration. Soft in the middle, a little crisp on the edges and as green as can be. You can’t ask for much more on St. Patrick’s Day.

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies Servings: 24-32 2 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, softened 1 1/4 cups sugar 2 eggs 30 drops green food coloring 1 teaspoon peppermint extract 1 package (12 ounces) chocolate chips Heat oven to 375 F. In large bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt until blended.

Set aside.

In medium bowl, beat butter and sugar until combined. Add eggs, food coloring and peppermint extract; beat until combined.

Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients; beat until combined.

Stir in chocolate chips. Drop spoonfuls of cookie dough onto baking sheet.

Bake 11-14 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned.

Cool on wire racks.
