Bishop Noll Institute will host an entrance exam for prospective students March 27 at the school, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond. Bishop Noll student Nyree Ruiz works on a 3D printer project in the new STREAM Lab, which opened for STEM, computer and engineering classes last year. The $1 million-plus project is the centerpiece of the school’s drive to become the first elite STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) school in Indiana.

Bishop Noll Institute will host its next entrance exam for prospective students at 8 a.m. March 27 at the school, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond. This is the first step in the admissions process for all 8th graders who have not taken the entrance exam yet and are interested in attending Bishop Noll.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, seats for this exam are limited. Parents MUST pre-register their child for the exam by downloading and completing Section A of the Transcript and Behavioral Report request form at bishopnoll.org or by contacting Mr. Stur, Director of Admissions, at jstur@bishopnoll.org.

The deadline to register for the entrance exam is Thursday, March 25. Walk-ins on the day of the exam will not be accepted.

Please be sure to keep in mind the following on the day of the exam: If your child has recently come in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19, is waiting to receive a COVID-19 test result, or is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms on the morning of the exam, PLEASE KEEP HIM/HER HOME. We will reschedule your child’s entrance exam date.

Test takers should arrive by 7:45 a.m. and be dropped off at our Door A (our main entrance).

Test takers will have their temperature checked by a BNI staff member prior to entering the building. If a test taker’s temperature is 100.4 or higher, he/she will be sent home.

Upon entering the building, test takers will drop off their $25 payment, check in at a table

outside of the main office and proceed to their testing location.

Test takers must wear a mask in the building at all times (this is required).

All test takers will be spaced out at least six feet apart during the exam.

No calculators allowed. Pencils and scratch paper will be provided.

Snacks and bottled water will be provided during the exam.

Testing will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and conclude between 11:30 a.m. and noon Parents should pick up their children at Door A. Please email Bishop Noll’s director of admissions, Jeff Stur, at jstur@bishopnoll.org or call (219) 932-9058 with any questions prior to the exam.

Now in its 100th school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education, including the highest graduation rate (99%) of any high school in Lake County over the past six years.

In addition, Noll’s Class of 2020 received $8.7 million in college scholarship offers. Noll is part of the Diocese of Gary, offering a discount to Diocesan families, and participates in the Indiana School Choice program.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA My grandfather used to say “Mercy!” as a lighthearted exclamation when he was exposed to something challenging or difficult. It’s a saying that has endured into my family’s vocabulary to this day. Hearing it sometimes makes me think about the word “mercy,” as it’s not one used often today.

I think of mercy as showing compassion to someone even if they don’t deserve it. From the recipient standpoint, to receive mercy is to not receive the full consequence of whatever offense you may have committed.

Here’s a simple example: If I start playing a friendly game of pick-up baseball with some friends and one of my friends swings and misses three times, the rules of baseball say that he’s out. But as an act of mercy, I could allow him to continue to swing until he gets a hit. He deserves to be out, but I withhold that consequence from him out of compassion.

God does the same, but on an eternal and ultimate scale.

God is perfect and holy, and as such, he is truly worthy of our complete obedience and devotion. He deserves this from us.

As God established the world, he also established that sin is abhorrent to him, and requires a punishment of death.

Sin (ie, actions, thoughts, or words that are contrary to God and His Word) deserves punishment. You and I deserve a just punishment for our offenses against God. The great mercy of God is shown most brilliantly when we call upon the name of Jesus Christ as our Savior. When we do this, God doesn’t give us what we deserve but instead shows us mercy. That punishment for our sin is placed on Jesus and we receive blessing upon blessing from the Lord.

If you’re weighed down by the weight of your sin, come to Jesus Christ for mercy. There is more mercy in Jesus Christ than there is sin in you.

University Of Illinois New Student Scholarship FarmHouse Fraternity at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign is offering multiple scholarships to incoming students of all majors that will be attending the university next fall. In 2020, the Illinois Chapter gave out over $20,000 to incoming students in scholarships. In 2021, we plan to give out more depending upon a qualified pool of candidates.

Scholarships range from $500-$5,000.

Does Your Company Care About The Environment As Much As Consumers Do? It’s not just a product’s quality that compels consumers to purchase it. More people today care about how the item was manufactured and whether the company is harming the environment.

Studies show sustainability is a factor driving customers’ buying decisions. Recent research by IBM revealed that nearly six in 10 consumers surveyed are willing to change their shopping habits to reduce environmental impact, and nearly eight in 10 indicated sustainability is important to them.

That’s why companies can’t afford to pay only lip service to sustainability issues, says David Radlo (www.davidradlo.com), best-selling author of Principles of Cartel Disruption: Accelerate and Maximize Performance, and an internationally recognized expert on corporate innovation and leadership.

“Organizations are under increasing pressure from customers, investors, employees, banks, legislators and insurance companies to embrace social and environmental concerns,” Radlo says.

“Studies increasingly show that the business benefits of sustainable strategies can be quantified and are real. There is a significant amount of money to be made and saved in the area of sustainability. It can give you a competitive advantage and improve your brand image, and it can also spur innovation.”

Radlo offers these points on how companies can prioritize and improve sustainability while turning it into a win-win for the environment and their business: Assess your company’s sustainability level. “Most companies don’t know where to start,” Radlo says. “You start with a complete assessment. As it is conducted, link your sustainability efforts

to the strategic plan and how it will impact your stakeholders. Determine your current status and what improvements you’d like to make.”

Identify ways to reduce waste and emissions.

“Waste and pollution are indicators of inefficiencies, which tend to generate unneeded costs and environmental problems,” Radlo says. “The goal is to achieve breakthroughs that would lead to manufacturing without any form of waste and no carbon equivalent emissions. Waste elimination is achieved at the source through product design, producer responsibility, and waste reduction strategies down the supply chain. Some concepts to eliminate waste include cleaner production, product dismantling, recycling, reuse, and composting.”

Create an implementation plan and operationalize. “Develop your people for this important transition,” Radlo says. “Along the way, improve your processes and focus on the outcomes you wish to achieve. What measurement can you put into place concerning your customers, employees, stakeholders, and shareholder loyalty?”

Permeate the work culture, in addition to financial sustainability, with a go-green mentality.

“The more that overall sustainability is ingrained and practiced in your culture, the stronger the company’s commitment is, and the message spreads organically and authentically,” Radlo says. “When your organization becomes a steward of the environment, and you fully integrate sustainability into your culture, the company now has a long-term vision and the processes in place to continue it.”

“Sustainability works for the greater good of any organization,” Rado says, “and it creates progress toward environmental and social improvement.”

CAR ACCIDENT MEDICAL BILLS WOODROW WILCOX On March 10, 2021, at the request of one of our agents, I wrote a letter to a client about the mix up of her medical bills because of a car accident. With some editing to protect our client’s privacy, here is the letter that I wrote.

Your insurance agent consulted me on a problem that you are having with medical bills related to a car accident. I am familiar with that process. I have helped other clients through that mess. But I usually work with people who come to my office so that we can make phone calls together. In each phone call, the client that I help must give verbal permission for me to speak and question on the client’s behalf.

In this way, I am able to get to the point of the conversations quickly and legally. There is a federal law that outlaws someone speaking to anyone but you about your health matters without your permission.

Because of the distance that [your home] is from our Merrillville office, I thought I would explain some things and give some information that might allow you to handle this matter.

When there is a car accident, the private car insurance company becomes the primary insurer. Medicare becomes an insurer after the primary insurer. If there are two cars involved in an accident, the two insurance companies representing the drivers or owners are the first one(s) obligated to pay claims for medical bills.

An insurance company involved is supposed

to report to Medicare that it has paid all medical claims related to the accident up to the insurance limit. Many companies fail to do that in a timely manner. A doctor might send claim information to the private insurance companies. I noticed that a medical service sent the claim to your Medicare supplement insurance company without sending it to Medicare. That is not allowed. A claim must be filed with Medicare and a ruling made before a Medicare supplement policy is required to pay anything.

If you were with me in my office, we would phone the car insurance claims adjuster(s) to get the facts and figures of where the case stands now. Then, depending on what was learned, we would call either or both Medicare and the Benefits Coordination & Recovery Center of Medicare. The process is time consuming.

If you try to do this on your own, I wish you well. If you become frustrated, I can help you if you make an appointment to come to my office and work with me.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused unemployment to soar in 2020 and is expected to affect the job market for graduates again this year. Some labor analysts see the pandemic perhaps having this ripple effect on graduates for years to come.

The job market is so competitive that companies are looking for far more than candidates with a high GPA. “Hiring managers often seek well-rounded young people who can communicate, collaborate and create,” Thompson says. “They’re looking for people who have been active outside the classroom as well – in

clubs, the community, volunteer work, etc. All of these aspects are part of your brand. Also, the new litmus test in the job market will be, ‘What did you do to improve yourself and others during COVID? Or did you do nothing and feel sorry for yourself?’ Employers are going to be looking for those intangibles.”

Organize your marketing playbook. “Utilizing a complete marketing playbook means leveraging your abilities and interests on social media platforms,” Thompson says. “This is where you display your public brand. Your profile, posts, photos, and videos reflect what you’re about.

It’s key that your presentation and message are consistent on each platform that you use.”

Expand your networking. “Today, about 75 percent of new hires happen through networking,” Thompson says. “Build a target list of people to contact at companies that are hiring. Join discussion groups on LinkedIn that can expand your contacts and your knowledge. Connect with

thought leaders and ask them questions to gain insight.”

Upskill. “Companies want young people who are versatile and able to learn new skills quickly,” Thompson says. “Research skills required in fields that you’re pursuing and get credentialed through online training programs. If opportunities are far fewer in your chosen field, research where your best skills apply in other industries.”

Prepare for virtual interviewing. “When you interview in person, your body language, enthusiasm, handshake and small talk help build a connection with the interviewer,” Thompson says. “Being interviewed on a screen demands that you be fully engaged, establish a rapport, have continual eye contact and express yourself clearly.”

“How you stand out from the crowd has always been the differentiator in hiring,” Thompson says.

“It’s much a bigger crowd now for fewer jobs, so the importance of preparation in all facets has never been more important.”

Indiana American Water Reminds Customers to Guard Against Imposters and Scammers In light of recent reports of scammers around the state impersonating company employees, Indiana American Water is reminding customers to be wary of individuals who may try to gain access to their homes by posing as utility personnel or are asking customers to provide personal information via phone, e-mail, or text.

“We want our customers to feel secure when our service employees reach out or visit their homes and businesses,” said Indiana American Water President Matt Prine. “Residents should be aware that all legitimate water company employees authorized to enter homes will be wearing clothing with our logo on it and carrying proper photo identification. Most service calls are scheduled

in advance and the company makes it a practice to not accept payment during service calls or shut-offs.”

Pretending to be a trusted utility worker is a trick some criminals use to gain access to homes, obtain payments, or steal personal information. Utilities often see spikes in these types of impersonations and scams when customers are most vulnerable. Indiana American Water recommends customers take the following precautions when approached by someone who says they are a utility worker: · Always ask for a company-issued photo ID. Indiana American Water employees carry company-issued photo ID badges. Do not open the door

to anyone who cannot provide this. · Never give cash. Our employees never collect money or credit card information from customers in the field. · Look for the logo. All Indiana American Water service personnel wear uniforms and drive company-branded vehicles with the logo. · If you suspect someone may be a utility imposter, close and lock your door, and call 911. You can also call Indiana American Water at 1-800492-8373 to report the incident and confirm whether service work is scheduled in the area. · For customers that may receive phone calls, e-mails or texts from people claiming to work for the water company, you should never give

out credit card, account information, or other personal information like your social security number or date of birth if you have doubts about who you are dealing with. If you have concerns, we recommend calling us directly as a means of verifying that you are being contacted by an actual company employee.

“There is no need to feel uneasy about making someone wait until you’re sure the person is a legitimate utility worker,” said Prine. “Indiana American Water employees care about our customers’ safety, and our employees don’t mind the wait. We believe it’s worth the peace of mind for our customers.”

5 Things Retirees Will Wish They Had Known Sooner Many people planning for retirement anticipate those post-working years eagerly, ready to veg out after a life of toil. Others plan with greater anxiety, unsure whether they even have an identity without their jobs.

But it may be that retirement these days is far different from what either point of view envisions.

“We all have made decisions based on the information we had at the time, but later realized we would have planned differently if we knew then what we know now,” says Patti Hart, co-author with her husband, Milledge, of The Resolutionist: Welcome to the Anti-Retirement Movement.

“That’s definitely true when it comes to planning for retirement.”

The Harts don’t even think of themselves as retirees, but as “resolutionists,” constantly challenging themselves to improve.

“I’m busier now than I’ve ever been,” Milledge Hart says. “I’m using this time to be a better me than I could when my days were structured and my time was spoken for.”

With that said, the Harts share five things future retirees may wish they had known sooner: Retirement isn’t what it used to be. Most people’s vision of retirement is built on what the people around them did, but that vision is outdated.

“Many of us watched our parents or grandparents settle into a quiet, nondescript life,” Milledge Hart says. “We’ve seen the stereotypical portrayal of aging and irrelevant ‘retirees’ on TV shows and in the movies.” But many retirees today are much more vibrant than those stereotypes and have no intention of sitting quietly on a front porch while the world passes them by.

People have more time in this phase of life than previous generations. Anyone who expects retirement to be a few short years tacked on to the end of their working life could be in for an awakening.

In actuality, this period could last 20 to 30 years or more. The average 65-year-old man can expect to live another 18 years and the average 65-year-old woman nearly 21 more years, according to the Social Security Administration. And those, re-

Nearly Half Of Workforce Is Fatigued From Video Calls Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. March 16, 2021 – While working remotely has become commonplace during the pandemic, so has fatigue from video calls, a new study conducted by Virtira Consulting shows.

Virtira’s study reveals that 49% of employees experience a high degree of exhaustion from being required or pressured to be on camera during online meetings. The Webcam Survey: Exhausted or Engaged? provides insights from over 1,700 managers and employees about the direct impact that company policies on the use of video during online meetings have on the well-being of employees. The survey also examines whether other factors contribute to the high incidence of reported employee exhaustion.

“As businesses adapt and learn from the remote work experiment, many have implemented policies regarding remote work based on opinion rather than data, causing a negative impact on employees,” says Virtira CEO Cynthia Watson (formerly Cynthia Spraggs). “In my conversations with business leaders throughout the pandemic, the majority said that employees on webcams during meetings increased engagement and productivity, but our study clearly shows it can have the opposite effect.

“With many businesses planning to move towards a fully remote or hybrid/flex model, understanding what policies create productive WFH and office-based employees is going to be critical moving forward – if businesses want to increase productivity and move beyond the pandemic.”

Key findings reveal: Over 49% of individuals report being exhausted due to being on a webcam. With current estimates of over 25 million employees working at home and another 41 million at the office or in a flexible commuting arrangement, this means that the rate of exhaustion could exist in over 30 million people.

61% of those surveyed reported that all meetings they attend are conducted on video for all participants.

Over 60% reported that the number of meetings they attend has increased significantly since the pandemic.

Over 65% of responses indicate that being on video is best used for team engagement and connection; however, only 11% reported that the camera was used this way.

Over 25% reported feeling peer pressure to put on their cameras even if it was not a requirement.

member, are averages. “Some people could spend more years in their postcareer life than they did building their career,” Patti Hart says. “Knowing and understanding what that means will help you plan better.”

It’s important to constantly prepare for the next phase. The Harts acknowledge they should have been planning earlier than they did. Instead, time slipped by. “The horizon is closer than it looks,” Milledge Hart says. So, when should you get serious about planning for those post-career years?

“Right now would be a good time,” he says. “But definitely, the sooner the better.”

Retirees need to redefine their metrics. The Harts say it’s important for people to redefine how they measure success in this phase of life because it’s different from how they likely measured success in their career days. “The goals are likely to be more qualitative than quantitative,” Patti Hart says. “For example, one of our metrics one year was to enhance our celebrations. We found that many holidays and special events were filled with

unnecessary stress and were too materially focused. We decided to eliminate event-driven gift giving.” That simple change, she says, improved their lives substantially.

Being a resolutionist is fun. If someone had told the Harts when they were in their 30s that their “retirement” years would be filled with so much fun, laughter, and fulfillment, they would have been skeptical. “We laugh more now than we’ve laughed at any other stage in our life,” Milledge Hart says. “This phase is instilled with so much adventure, and it’s a feeling that comes from within rather than the happiness of achieving a certain stock price.”

“I wish I had known sooner that I could say goodbye to the corporate world and still be interesting and relevant,” Patti Hart says. “I wish I had known that retirement is yours to define. I successfully defined my role in the business world, but it didn’t dawn on me that I could also reinvent retirement. I don’t know why. It seems perfectly obvious now.”

Answer: You did not mention who gave you that advice, but we do not know of any reputable Real estate or Mortgage professional who would tell you that! When considering a home purchase, your Family budget must take first priority. Although your home is very important, there is more to life than a home. How about being able to purchase the right things for your family? How about having a little cash extra to enjoy life? How about the necessity of having savings for an emergency or to reward yourself once in a while for all your hard work? Money problems are very stressful.

You were approved for that amount based on your income and debts. Sounds like you are in a pretty good financial position. Why mess that up? Remember that there is a fine

line between need and desire.

You need to sit down with your spouse and make a family budget. Decide which home mortgage payment fits that budget. Get advice from your parents and a financial adviser. Don’t take advice from anyone unless they are qualified to make those financial suggestions. Ask your lender what price home fits that monthly payment. Then look at homes in that price range. Keep in mind that a house payment includes homeowners insurance, a tax bill, utilities and possible mortgage insurance. If you do not like the homes you see in that price range, then do what your parents and grandparents did….

But as caught up as you are with the feelings and experiences of today, you also need to think about the future – specifically, the financial issues that accompany a growing family. What are some of the key moves you need to make?

Here’s “checklist” to consider: __Establish a budget. If you’re going to meet the additional expenses of a child, plus make progress toward other objectives, such as paying down debts, you’ll need to know where your money is going. Setting a budget, and sticking to it, may seem difficult, but once you’ve gotten into the habit, it will become easier – and for many people, following a budget actually gives them more of a sense of control over their finances. Over time, expenses related to your children will change, so you’ll need to adjust your budget accordingly – for example, once a child is in school full-time, childcare expenses may drop, which could allow you to boost your savings. __Protect against the unexpected. If something were to happen to you, how would your child, or children, be affected? Even a family with two working parents can face serious financial difficulties if one of the parents were to die prematurely, or even just drop out of the workforce temporarily due to illness or injury. To help ensure your family could still stay in your home and your children could still afford to pursue higher education, you’ll want to create an appropriate protection strategy involving both life and disability insurance. Your employer may offer both, but the coverage provided may not be sufficient for your needs, so you may need to purchase your own policies. And

here’s another protection-related idea: Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account.

Without such a fund, you might have to tap into your longer-term investments to pay unexpected costs, such as a major car repair. __Prepare for high cost of higher education. You may already be thinking about sending your child to college. And it is indeed a good idea to start planning early because college is expensive, and it’s getting more so every year. However, you can prepare for these expenses through a college-savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. A financial professional can help you pick the investment, or investment strategy, that’s appropriate for your needs. But whatever route you decide to follow, you won’t want to wait until your child is close to college age. __Keep long-term goals in mind. Even while planning for the costs associated with raising a child, including saving for college, you can’t forget your other long-term goals.

It isn’t selfish to build resources for your own retirement – in fact, you’ll ultimately be helping your family greatly by taking steps to maintain your financial independence throughout your life. So, during your working years, try to consistently contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.

Having a child is obviously a life-changing event, and one with considerable financial challenges – but they can be manageable if you make the right moves at the right times.

AHCA/NCAL Issues Statement On Guidance For Nursing Home Visitation The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), representing more than 14,000 nursing homes and long term care facilities across the country that provide care to approximately five million people each year, released a statement following an announcement from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on new guidance for nursing home visitation.

The statement is attributable to Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL: “While we are still reviewing the guidance, the indication that nursing home residents can visit with their loved ones is welcome news that we fully support. It has been nearly one year to the day since visitors were restricted from nursing homes, and now thanks to the vaccines, we cannot wait to safely reopen our doors. Our dedicated staff members have done an extraordinary job filling in for loved ones and adapting visitations during this difficult time, but nothing can replace engaging with family members in-person. The health and wellbeing of our residents

will improve thanks to this important guidance.

“It is critical that public health officials continue to prioritize vaccines for long term care residents and staff in order to help facilitate these reunifications. After the three rounds of on-site clinics, it is unclear how long term care facilities will be able to quickly access vaccines moving forward. We need the CDC to ensure the vaccine is readily available for new admissions as well as current residents who have since decided to get the vaccine, so they are able to visit with their families per the new CMS guidance. A steady, ongoing allocation of vaccines to long term care will also help ensure we continue to build upon the progress we have already made in reducing COVID in long term care.

“It is also critical we continue to educate staff, residents and family members, and the general public, about the importance of the vaccine, giving them the facts they need to make an informed decision. We launched the #GetVaccinated campaign in December to help in this effort, and providers are committed to increasing uptake among residents and staff.”

Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra announce Spring Concert Series The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Conductor Kirk Muspratt are Bringing Back the Music with a Spring Concert Series. The series consists of 3 concerts held at the Auditorium at Living Hope Church, 9000 Taft Street, on the Merrillville/Crown Point border. The concerts are all 70 minutes with no intermission. Both in-person and virtual tickets will be available to all events.

In-person tickets will be limited with general admission, socially distanced seating. Temperatures will be taken at the venue upon entry and masks must be worn for the duration of the performance and at all times while on church property.

Virtual ticket buyers will receive a private link to watch the performance live the night of the show, then a follow up link will be sent to a recorded version of the concerts to be enjoyed for one month. In-person ticket buyers will also receive the recorded link.

IPHCA Commends President and Congress American Rescue Plan Today, President Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan into law, representing one of the single largest investments in community health centers in our nation’s history. This package contains critical emergency COVID-19 relief funds as well as investments to advance the President’s health equity agenda.

For far too long, structural racism has plagued our health care system, resulting in a lack of investment and persistent inequities. On behalf of Illinois’ 52 community health centers and the 1.5 million patients they serve annually, the Illinois Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA) thanks President Biden and Congress for leading the way to strengthen investment in underserved communities and alleviate racial health disparities. This ambitious package includes funds that will equip health centers to continue to respond to the pandemic and keep highly impacted communities safe. In addition, the Plan will increase investment in public health workforce programs and improve affordability for those purchasing health plans through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace.

Key provisions of the American Rescue Plan impacting community health centers and their patients include: $7.6 billion to community health centers for COVID-19 prevention, testing, treatment, outreach, vaccination, and other response efforts; $800 million for the National Health Service Corps, $330 million for the Teaching Health Cen-

ters Graduate Medical Education program, and $200 million for the Nurse Corps; $47.8 billion to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to implement a national testing strategy and contact tracing surveillance; $7.5 billion to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for vaccine administration and distribution; and Improved affordability of health care coverage by capping premiums and extending subsidies to a broader range of ACA Marketplace consumers.

Community health centers have a long track record as go-to sources for health care and information. The investments outlined in the American Rescue Plan are a testament to the important role that community health centers have played in bridging the gaps in access to care in underserved communities not only during the pandemic, but for the decades prior to the devastating arrival of COVID-19.

Avoiding A Commission MIKE BUDER Often, when listing a for sale by owner (most end up listing), I am asked what happens if someone who expressed interest while the home was a FSBO buys after I list the home.

Habitat Of NWI And Lowe’s Address COVID-19’s Impact On Women Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana and Lowe’s are partnering to raise awareness of the global need for safe and affordable housing for women during International Women Build Week (March 8-15). On International Women’s Day, Habitat and Lowe’s will kick off more than 300 Women Build projects supporting women-led households across the United States, Canada, and India to drive awareness and address the need.

Women have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, from job loss to evictions and foreclosures. According to The National Women’s Law Center, 80 percent of U.S. jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic were held by women. The United Nations (UN) has reported that 40 percent of all employed women globally work in the industries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In a year presenting so many challenges, we are encouraged to see how partners like Lowe’s have risen to the occasion to help women and families right here in Lake County, Indiana find strength, security, and stability through shelter,” said Dawn Michaels, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana. “We’re so proud that our long-standing partnership with Lowe’s is able to continue, especially during this time when affordable housing is more crucial than ever.”

Despite the unprecedented challenges women are facing, women remain on the frontlines of the pandemic as essential workers, as caretakers within their households, and too often have to make the difficult decision between maintaining a place to call home and paying for food, health care, childcare, education or reliable transportation. Harvard University’s State of the Nation’s Housing 2020 report revealed that 37.1 million U.S. households spent more than 30 percent of their incomes on housing in 2019, including 17.6 million spending more than 50 percent. The effects of the pandemic

have further highlighted the need for safe and affordable housing, as 29 percent of renters and 36 percent of homeowners experienced employment income loss between March and September of 2020.

This year, Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana’s Women Build house is being built in Merrillville, Indiana. Young mother and Habitat partner family head Leslie has already begun working towards completing the required 300 “sweat equity” hours. “I’ve already learned so much about how a home is built and what it takes to maintain it. This is very important to me because I’m solely responsible for the care of my little boy. I want to show him the Mommies can take care of home. It also gives me the chance to teach him how to care for his home when he grows up.”

Every day, millions of women face the challenge of a future without adequate, stable housing. This issue underscores the importance of Habitat and Lowe’s efforts to bring awareness to the issue, as well as a partnership focused on ensuring that more women have access to affordable housing.

Lowe’s and Habitat’s partnership began in 2003 and the Women Build program was developed in 2005. To date, the program has brought together more than 143,000 women volunteers who have built or repaired nearly 6,000 houses.

Lowe’s has committed more than $78 million to support the global housing nonprofit’s efforts, including the Women Build program, International Women Build Week, and Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization program. Lowe’s support of Habitat has helped more than 18,000 Habitat partner families improve their living conditions.

A Hoppy Easter Cake Warmer days at the start of spring mean Easter is almost here, and the big bunny himself will be hopping around in no time delivering goodies.

This Easter, celebrate with your loved ones with a delicious and colorful Easter Bunny Butt Cake. It can bring smiles and laughter while putting everyone in a light, joyful mood.

This cake is fun and bright with a fluffy, moist interior. Complete with chocolate candy eggs, shredded coconut and chocolate chips for little bunny toes, this recipe goes all out to paint a picture of the Easter bunny.

Start by combining whole eggs, egg whites, cream of coconut, crushed pineapple, coconut extract and vanilla extract.

In a food processor, pulse flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Then add butter gradually, 6 tablespoons at a time, for a total of 12 tablespoons.

Add dry mixture to a mixing bowl then add egg mixture half at a time. Beat until cake batter is formed.

Fill muffin tins 2/3 full and bake 18-20 minutes.

The remaining batter goes into an oven-safe bowl to bake for 1 hour, 40 minutes.

The buttercream frosting is made with powdered sugar, butter, milk, vanilla extract and coconut extract.

Assemble the cake using pretzel sticks to blend it together to make the bunny butt shape. Frost the cake and spread shredded coconut over it to create a textured appearance. Stick chocolate

chips on the bunny’s feet to create toes. Place your favorite Easter or bunny candies around the cake for extra garnish.

This cake is worth every step. It’s delicious and as cute as can be, plus it’s perfect for dessert after a big Easter dinner.

Easter Bunny Butt Cake

2 large round chocolate candy melts 6 chocolate chips mini candy-coated chocolate eggs, for garnish

Servings: 10-12 Nonstick cooking spray

Heat oven to 325 F.

Buttercream Frosting: 3 cups powdered sugar 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened 3 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract 4 1 8

thin pretzel sticks bag (10 ounces) sweetened shredded coconut drops green food coloring

Line muffin pan with four paper liners. Spray oven-safe glass bowl with nonstick cooking spray.

In large bowl, whisk eggs, egg whites, cream of coconut, pineapple, coconut extract and vanilla extract until combined.

In food processor, pulse flour, sugar, baking powder and salt until combined. Add 6 tablespoons butter. Pulse until combined. Add remaining butter. Pulse until coarse meal forms.

In large mixing bowl, add coarse flour butter meal. Add half of egg mixture. Beat 1-2 minutes. Add remaining egg mixture; beat until combined.

Fill each muffin cup 2/3 full. Bake 18-20 minutes, or until done. Cool completely.

Pour remaining batter into prepared oven-safe bowl. Bake 1 hour, 40 minutes, or until done.

Cool completely.

To make buttercream frosting: In large bowl, add powdered sugar and butter; beat until fluffy. Add milk, vanilla extract and coconut extract; beat until creamy.

Turn bowl upside-down on cake stand until cake removes from bowl. If cake needs leveled, turn cake over and trim to flatten. Frost cake.

Remove wrappers from cupcakes. Using two pretzel sticks, press into base of cupcakes and anchor to bottom rim of bowl cake to create bunny feet. Frost feet.

Take third cupcake and cut muffin top off.

Cut muffin top in half. Using one pretzel stick, anchor one muffin top half at bottom of full cupcake to form toes. Repeat with second muffin top half for other foot. Frost toes.
