Abundant Living Christian Center in Dolton was certainly living out its mission to the community by teaming up with Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard last Saturday. A grocery giveaway was the most recent outreach and was greeted by excited residents on the front lawn of the church located at 14550 Lincoln Ave in Dolton. Mayor Henyard and her team organized the grocery giveaway that was so appreciated by grateful residents. One resident remarked, “I’m so thankful for these groceries. It’s really hard to make ends meet these days because prices are going up and up. Mayor Henyard truly looks out for us. I’m blessed to live in a town where the Mayor has such a heart for the people.” Dolton Trustee Andrew Holmes was on hand to greet the crowd and lend his assistance in organizing the event. Stan Brown commented on Facebook, “Make sure you come back to church tomorrow to thank the Lord for your blessing!” Mayor Henyard remarked, “We are out in the community on a regular basis. Please stay tuned for more outreach and help coming to Dolton and beyond. Now as Supervisor of Thornton Township, I can help even more people during difficult times!” Mayor Henyard mentioned that new grants are available to help the Dolton community. Check www.vodolton.org for upcoming events that include assistance for seniors and veterans to help with home repair, as well as $5,000 small business grants.

Clerk’s Office Conducts Ballot Lottery for June 28, 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Races Cook County Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough and the Clerk’s Office Election Team held ballot lotteries in a public drawing March 21st to determine candidate ballot positions for countywide races in the June 28, 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election. In total, 15 drawings – 12 for the first ballot spot and three for the last spot – were held for a total of 12 primary races. The lotteries for the first position on the ballot were comprised of candidates competing for the same office who filed their nomination petitions simultaneously on March 7 at 9 a.m., the first day of candidate filing. A separate lottery was held for candidates vying for the last spot on the ballot – these candidates filed their nomination petitions on March 14 between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., the last day of candidate filing. Anyone who filed after 9 a.m. on March 7 and before 3:59 p.m. on March 14 will be on the ballot in the order they turned in their nomination paperwork. The ballot lottery was open to candidates, the media, and the public and it was also streamed live on the Clerk’s Facebook page. The list and status of candidates who filed with the Clerk’s Office can be found on the Clerk’s website at cookcountyclerk.com.

South Suburban College to Unveil Men’s Basketball Championship Banner Saturday The South Suburban College (SSC) Men’s Basketball Team won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament on Saturday, March 19, 2022. The college is inviting the community to celebrate with the team at a special Bulldogs Championship Banner Unveiling on Saturday, March 26 at 12 noon at the SSC Fieldhouse. All media and fans are encouraged to attend to view the banner, enjoy light refreshments, and hear from players, coaches and special guests. The Bulldogs defeated Davidson-Davie Community College 79-63 at the Mary Miller Center in Danville, Illinois, to cap off a 33-0 season. They entered the tournament as the #1 seed as the national leader in points allowed, blocks and steals. The Bulldogs became the first NJCAA championship winner in school history in any sport. They also earned the distinction as the first team in NJCAA DII history to go undefeated. “It is a great feeling to win the national tournament, but I am even more impressed that these men were able to go undefeated all year,” said Head Coach John Pigatti. “All of the credit goes to the players – they were really locked in and stayed focused together all week here in Danville. We played some excellent teams and still held three of our opponents to their lowest point totals and the fourth to their second lowest all year.” Local talent Demarco Minor, a freshman guard from Thornton High School in Harvey, IL, was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He is joined on the All-Tournament Team by Damontae Taylor, a freshman forward from Zion-Benton High School in Waukegon, IL, Camron Donatlan, a sophomore guard from West Aurora High School in Aurora, IL, and Nmesomachi Nnebedum, a sophomore guard from Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, MI.

The DNA of an Appraiser MIKE BUDER “How on earth did the appraiser come up with this value?” How indeed…was the value contrived based on his or her feelings and intuition? Was it parsed with assumed data? Or did the appraiser just make it up and collect the fee? Well, I don’t blame you for asking. To sort out what appraisers are, let’s look at what they do. Real estate appraisers write reports about both what they see and what they hear at the subject property and what their market research reveals. These reports must not mislead, and the arguments must be well supported. In the end, appraisers must sign their name to a conclusion and accept liability for it. Every party who is aware of the appraisal generally has a specific desire or agenda for the outcome of the process, yet the only things that appraisers can allow to influence their conclusion are the facts. The facts must be verified and cross-checked. Appraisers will often visit the value indicators (the comparable sales) in person. They must weed out false and misleading data. They must be able to explain themselves well. The best appraisal is an accurate and well informed appraisal. If an appraiser is led to believe something that is not true or is given partial truths, his or her appraisal may not be accurate. This can hurt everyone. Among the negative consequences of a misinformed appraisal are confusion or anger on the part of buyers and sellers, unwanted contract renegotiations, unwarranted denials of

mortgage applications, and of course the risk that bad loans pose to nationwide economic stability. When lending institutions and underwriters rely on an inaccurate appraisal, they make poor decisions. Those decisions can cause grief for years as we witnessed in the sub-prime mortgage fallout from 2007 until 2012. Some good appraisers will ask many questions. Other appraisers, who are equally good, will ask far fewer. Whatever the case, the non-appraiser participants in a transaction should help the appraiser to be accurate by giving facts. Appraisers are trained to assess the quality of the data they receive, and if they detect that a data source is biased or unreliable, they must stop trusting it entirely and this could negatively impact the accuracy of the conclusions. If we need to sum up what appraisers are, we could say they are the eyes and the ears for their clients…They look, they listen, investigate, analyze, conclude and report. Appraisers will be able to serve your interests best when they have complete and accurate information and data. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. Speaking Of Seniors

Protecting 94-year-old Client WOODROW WILCOX

Bulldogs Head Coach John Pigatti celebrates with his team after earning the school’s first national championship.

_______________________________

“I am very appreciative of the support I have received since I came to SSC 16 years ago: from President Stokes and the Board of Trustees, the administration, our Athletic Director Steve Ruzich, and of course our fans,” Pigatti added. “I am proud to bring a championship home to such an outstanding school. These players and the entire South Suburban College community deserves this.” Pigatti adds his first National Championship to 12 Regional Championships he has won during his 16-year tenure as Head Coach of the SSC Men’s Basketball Team. For more information, contact Coach Pigatti at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2524, or email jpigatti@ssc.edu. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

On March 17, 2022, I wrote a letter to a medical firm that sent to our 94-yearold client a bill with two different balances due. Obviously, our elderly client did not understand why there were two balances due on the bill. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill is dated 03/02/2022. It states an Invoice Number of XXXXXXXX and an Account Number of XXXXXXXX. The bill is confusing. At one place, it reports a balance due of $48.50. At another place, it seeks a balance of $243.73. Which is the correct balance? Please, send details of how this bill was calculated including the dates of service, the original billing, the Medicare approved amount, the Medicare paid amount, and the secondary

insurer’s payment amount for each date of service. Send it to our client so that she can forward it to our office for our examination. Until then, know that our client is not ignoring this bill. She is reviewing your bill for accuracy. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients in such matters. If your insurance agency does not follow this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

JOSH BOOTSMA Do you struggle with procrastination like I do? (Just ask the editors of this paper about my habit of turning in columns at the 11th hour!) The “I’ll do it later” idea is one that sneaks its way into Christianity, too. Maybe you’ve thought it yourself: “I’ll get serious about following Jesus once I’m done with X, Y, or Z.” Or maybe it’s, “I just want to enjoy myself a little bit before I get all devout as a Christian.” This procrastination can apply to both Christian and nonChristians alike, and it’s very misguided. Here are three problems with it: First, it ignores God’s command in Isaiah 55: “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts” God doesn’t ask us to call on Him when we feel like it, He commands us to call on Him now! Second, “I’ll do it later” assumes something about our future. In a world of heart attacks, terrible accidents, and other life-changing events, we need to remember that tomorrow is not promised to us. Third, Christian procrastination implies that the world’s greatest joys are found outside of Jesus Christ. It ignores Jesus’ promise in John 10, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” This is a worldview that is upsidedown! Only as the beloved children of God, saved by Jesus Christ, can we have true joy and freedom. Whether you’re putting off giving your life to Jesus or whether you’re a longtime Christian who’s putting off committing to change in your life, know this: the pleasures of living your own way ultimately pale in comparison to the eternal joy of having life in Christ and living like Him! Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: If a realtor tells me my house is worth 380k and an Internet Home Estimate site says 440k, who do I believe? Answer: If the Realtor has over 5 years years of experience in your local market, has been inside your home, has noted the lot characteristics, has found comparables and provided a market analysis, and has discussed with you the features of your home that both add, and detract, from its value, you can bet their estimate of your home’s value is more accurate than an Internet Home estimate site. These internet home estimate sites are notorious for over, and under, estimating home values. They don’t make house calls and have never been inside your home. They can’t see (or can’t subjectively evaluate) your ugly bathroom, your tired kitchen, your out-of-date finishes. Their algorithm doesn’t compensate for your house backing

to a busy road, a fast-food drive-through window, or a sewage treatment plant. When it comes to subjective determinants of value, these internet home estimate sites miss the mark. Every time. It’s ridiculous to try to compare an experienced human real estate professional to these inaccurate home estimate sites. I know it’s tempting, but just don’t do it. SSC Seeking Teachers SSC to Offer for College for Kids Summer Graphic Summer Program Design Session to High School Juniors and Seniors The Office of Continuing, Corporate and Community Education (C3) at South Suburban College (SSC) is seeking teachers to join the College for Kids teaching staff. This program will greatly enhance a child’s development this summer. This program will begin on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 and conclude on Thursday, July 28, 2022. Classes will not be offered on Monday, July 4, 2022, as campus will be closed for the holiday. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and should be familiar with educating children in grades K-12. While teaching credentials are preferred, experience educating in a school setting is sufficient to apply for these paid positions. This program will explore reading, study skills, grammar and essays, math (including pre-algebra, algebra and geometry), foreign language (such as Spanish), and art. “Teachers in the College for Kids program have a direct opportunity to positively impact the youth of our community through education,” said Gervaise Edwards, Manager of C3. “If teaching is your calling and the future is your concern, this opportunity is right for you. Teachers in this program influence, inspire and mentor our local children to have better, brighter futures.” Call Gervaise Edwards at (708) 596-2000 ext. 5723 for more information or to apply to teach in this program. College for Kids will be offered on SSC’s Main Campus, located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

The Art and Design Department at South Suburban College (SSC) invites students, who will enter their junior or senior year of high school in the fall of 2022, to learn about the Graphic Design Program this summer. This hands-on opportunity will run from June 6 - 16, 2022 between 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday on the South Holland campus in room 4431. Participants will have the opportunity to work directly with Pamela Planera, who is not only the Graphic Design and Visual Communications Coordinator at SSC, but a professional graphic design artist and photographer as well. She will share details learned throughout her many years of experience in this exciting field while focusing on design elements incorporating professional Adobe software tools such as Illustrator and Photoshop. A variety of topics will be covered from print to animation. Planera remarked, “If you are passionate about art and design, South Suburban College degree programs can teach you the skills to keep it at the center of your universe. In the graphic design summer session, students will be able to build a hands-on experience that combines traditional fine arts with today’s digital tools and techniques. The students will explore their creativity into a career path in graphic design.” The enrollment fee for this non-credit session, called Graphic Design I, is $99. This opportunity is limited to 20 students. The deadline to apply for this summer session is June 2, 2022 or until full capacity is reached. Contact Pamela Planera at pplanera@ssc.edu or (708) 5962000 ext. 2211 for more information or to register. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Financial Advice Column

Don’t be surprised by Social Security Taxes SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN When you reach the appropriate age, it’s easy to apply for Social Security retirement benefits – just go to Social Security’s website, fill out the online form and you’re essentially done. But many people overlook the next step – completing Form W-4V, which asks you how much federal income tax you want withheld from your benefits. And if you skip this step, you could face an unpleasant surprise when it’s tax-filing time, because Social Security benefits can indeed add to your taxable income. Here are the details: If you’re a single filer…If your “combined” income is between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your Social Security benefits. (“Combined” income includes your adjusted gross income, non-taxable interest, and one-half of your annual Social Security benefits.) If your combined income is more than $34,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable. If you’re married and file jointly…If you and your spouse have a combined income between $32,000 and $44,000, you may be taxed on up to 50 percent of your benefits. If your combined income is more than $44,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable. These numbers might seem high, but they don’t mean you’ll lose 50 percent, or 85 percent, of your benefits – they are just the percentages of benefits you may be taxed on, at your personal income tax rate. To help avoid a big tax bill or an underpayment penalty, you can file Form W-4V with the Social Security Administration and request to have 7, 10, 12 or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. Your tax advisor can help you choose the withholding percentage that’s appropriate for your situation.

The amount of taxes you may need to pay will also depend on when you start taking Social Security. The earlier you take benefits, the smaller your monthly checks, and the smaller the taxes. But taxes should not be a key issue in deciding when you need to begin collecting your payments. Rather, you should consider other factors, such as your anticipated life expectancy, your employment situation, your spending needs and the benefits for your spouse. Here’s something else to keep in mind: Because Social Security taxes are based on your overall income, as described above, the amount of money you withdraw during retirement, and where that money comes from, can also affect your tax situation. For example, withdrawals from a traditional IRA are taxable and will increase your adjusted gross income, but withdrawals from a Roth IRA will be tax-free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you’re over 59 -1/2, so this money won’t enter into your taxable income calculations and it won’t increase the tax you owe on your Social Security benefits. Similarly, withdrawals from health savings accounts (HSAs) used for qualified health expenses also won’t count toward your taxable income. By knowing exactly what to expect from Social Security, including the tax effects, you can more effectively incorporate your benefits into your overall retirement income planning – and the better your plans, the more you’ll be able to enjoy your life as a retiree. I’M NOT A DOCTOR, BUT I PLAY ONE ON TV This common phrase was first uttered by

General Hospital actor Chris Robinson, who portrayed Dr. Rick Webber on the daytime drama. The original commercial. airing in 1984, was for Vicks Formula 44 Cough Syrup. The ad campaign was successful enough that the Vicks execs re-cast it in 1986 (with All My Children’s Peter Bergman, aka Dr. Cliff Warner) after Robinson was convicted of income tax evasion in 1985. 1 5 4
