JOSH BOOTSMA Perhaps we’re too hard on “Doubting Thomas.”

Thomas was one of Jesus’ disciples, and, upon hearing of Jesus’ resurrection, insisted on seeing and touching Jesus before he would believe He was alive. Yes, Thomas should have believed in the first place, but that sin should not define him.

How does Jesus treat Thomas when they first meet after Thomas’ doubt? The whole ordeal is recorded in John 20:24-29. Jesus tells Thomas to touch his hands and feel his pierced side, exactly what Thomas said he needed to believe. Jesus doesn’t curse Thomas for his doubt, but responds with specific assurance!

Jesus doesn’t define Thomas by his doubt, and He doesn’t define you by your doubt either.

Far too often, Christians equate doubt with unbelief. But they’re not the same. Doubt says “I have questions.” Unbelief says, “I know all the answers.” Doubt says, “I’m open to discovering more about God.” Unbelief says, “I’m closing myself off to God.” Doubt can be God’s way to refine you, to bring you to a fuller understanding of Himself.

19th Century poet Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote a poem called “Doubt and Faith” telling the story of a man who challenges the notion that doubt is “Devil-born.” Some of the poem is included below. May it bless you as you seek to think about your own doubt in a healthy way: Perplext in faith, but pure in deeds, At last he beat his music out.

There lives more faith in honest doubt, Believe me, than in half the creeds.

Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ A REMEMBRANCE OF THE LIFE OF SPENCER LEIGH MINTON: My son Spencer was called to the Lord on Wednesday March 17, 2021, St. Patrick’s Day. That day is usually one of fun and rejoicing, of parades and corned beef and cabbage--but for me and (Spencer’s daughters) my four granddaughters, Alex, Tina, Julie and Jennifer, it was one of sadness. Spencer’s body just failed him, at age 51. And we are left to carry on--with our memories and our fondness for all the things he loved--the Chicago White Sox, Metallica’s music, rock concerts in Chicago, his best friend David VanderVort, McDonald’s McRibs, his new job at the Secretary of State office in Bradley, and most of all his children-his four daughters. He was the best father on the planet and lived to see his kids happy. As Alex said to me shortly after he died at 10:10 am on March 17, 2021, “ I know Dad always wanted the best for us and he tried to make it happen for us.” Flashback to December 6, 1969.

This bundle of joy came into my life and it was forever changed. We were a team, Spencer and I, but not to leave out his adoring Dad, Spencer L. Minton Sr. Or my parents’ Florence Triller and Jerry Triller who lived on 153rd and Sunset in Dolton or my grandmother who took up residence in Manor Care on 154th Street where Spencer would ride his bike over to see her on a regular basis.

Spencer was one of the 154th and Clyde Avenue kids in the unincorporated area of South Holland east of the expressway, then called the Calumet. His best friend was across the street neighbor David VanderVort. Others included the kids next door, the Bogoioff’s, Shelly, Jeannie, Johnny, and Gloria seen in some pictures here. Spencer attended St, Jude Grade School and then Dirksen Jr. High before attending Mt Carmel for 2 years and graduating from Thornwood in 1987 in what was surely their largest class of over 3,000 students. In between Spencer played ball on the South Holland Little League coached by Don Moll at the time. His Dad or I attended most of the games, rain or shine, win or lose. And after the game we would sometime go to Rukavina’s on Torrence for a burger supper. (or ribs if we were feeling flush) In 1991 Spencer joined the US Army during the Gulf War and was active until his honorable discharge in 1993. He took a few jobs until he used his Army training with the Signal Corps to sign up with A T & T where he worked for almost 23 years.

Friend and client Cornell Hudson helped the process along. In the meantime, he moved to Beecher and then Grant Park, Il and stayed close to the country life he loved. No city boy this guy--he loved the farm fields of the far south burbs, Will County and Kankakee County.

When he did come to visit me in Hegewisch he always said....”Mom, got to get you out to the country--God’s country.” And if my Catholic-Christian upbringing serves me right--that is exactly where he is right now-in God’s Country--Heaven. Rest in Peace my Darling Spencer Leigh. ***

If you’re planning to retire in just a few years, you may be getting excited about this next phase of your life. However, your ability to enjoy retirement fully will depend, at least partially, on the resources you can draw from your investment portfolio. So, while you still have time to act, ask yourself if you’re comfortable with your portfolio’s risk level.

Your relationship with risk can change noticeably over time.

When you started saving for retirement, you may have been willing to take on more investment risk, which translated into a relatively high percentage of stocks and stock-based mutual funds in your investment portfolio. As you know, stocks offer the potential for greater returns than other assets – such as bonds and certificates of deposit (CDs) – but they are also typically more volatile and carry more risk.

But when you were many decades away from retirement, you had sufficient time to recover from market fluctuations.

(Of course, there are no guarantees – it’s possible that some stocks will lose value and never regain it.)

Now, fast forward to where you are now – closing in on retirement. Even at this stage of your life – and, in fact, even during your retirement – you will need some growth-oriented investments to help stay ahead of inflation. Over time, even a low inflation rate, such as we’ve had the past several years, can erode your purchasing power.

So, the issue isn’t this: “Should I get rid of all my risk?” You shouldn’t – and, in fact, you couldn’t, because all investments, even the ones considered most “conservative,” contain some type of risk, even if it isn’t the risk of loss of principal. For instance, some investments run the risk of not keeping up with inflation. Instead, ask yourself these questions: “How much risk should I take within my portfolio?” “How much risk do I actually need to achieve my goals in retirement?”

Of course, there are no one-size-fits-all answers. You’ll need to look at your investment portfolio to see if it’s positioned to provide you with the income you’ll require in your retirement years. You might have initially based your financial strategy on a specific type of retirement lifestyle, but now that you’re nearing retirement, perhaps you’ve changed your mind. Your anticipated new lifestyle might require either more or less income than you had originally projected – and if that’s the case, you may need to adjust the risk level in your portfolio or make other adjustments.

For example, suppose you had initially envisioned a rather quiet retirement, sticking around your home, volunteering and spending time with your grandchildren. But in recent years – and especially since the confinement many of us have felt during the COVID-19 pandemic – you may have thought that you’d now like to travel extensively. To achieve this goal, which will likely cost more than your original one, you may have to work longer, or invest more each year until you retire, or seek a higher return on your investments – which means accepting more risk.

As you can see, managing risk is a balancing act – and you may need to make some tough choices. But as long as you’re aware of how much risk you can take, and how much risk you may need to take to reach your goals, you can develop a strategy that aligns with your objectives.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My daughter is trying to buy a house and the mortgage broker she is dealing with told her the closing cost would be between $4,000 to $5,000 on a $113,500 house with a $10,000 down payment. This seems a little bit on the high side. Is this a normal charge or is she being ripped off?

Answer: The closing costs paid by your daughter reflect the requirements of the sales contract, transfer costs and loan expenses. Whether these amounts are reasonable or not depends on how the agreement was negotiated, the transfer costs for the local jurisdiction and the loan expenses. For instance, is your daughter paying additional points up front to get a lower interest rate?

At the very least, why doesn’t your daughter speak with other lenders to see what alternative financing options are available. In other words, have her get a 2nd opinion.

Question: What do the terms “Under Contract” or “Sale Pending” mean?

Answer: In real estate it is a routine matter for buyers and sellers to sign a sales agreement. That agreement, however, does not mean the house has been sold -- that title has been transferred. Instead, there may be a period of time allowed for the purchaser to have a home inspection inspection, to line up financing under certain terms, to check the title, etc. In this situation, the property is “under contract” but not sold, so other offers may be made. Such offers may also be accepted by a seller, usually as back-up agreements -- meaning they have no value unless the first offer falls through.

A client and friend of mine from Schererville brings me the sales pitch letters that she gets from other insurance agencies or companies. I review them and explain them to her.

All that she has sent have been “slick” sales pitch letters.

But one really bothered me because I felt it was just dishonest and might trouble some senior citizens. In bold letters near the top, the letter stated “MEDICARE COVERAGE REVIEW – CALL IMMEDIATELY”.

At the bottom of the page, it stated “Please turn over for disclaimer information”. On the other side of the paper, it stated, “This letter is an advertisement.”

An average senior citizen might become alarmed at the phrase “MEDICARE COVERAGE REVIEW – CALL IMMEDIATELY”. It suggests that some drastic change has happened in the Medicare system. It is phrased to alarm and startle a senior into the action of calling the number. But is the phone number really with an insurance agency, or is it the phone number of scammers who want to “phish” the startled senior citizen into giving personal information of the senior in order to take money from the senior’s

bank account?

The same firm sent two other similarly worded letters. None of the letters nor the envelopes showed a return address or the name of a real insurance agent or real insurance company.

Envelopes from a real insurance agent, agency, or insurance company have real return addresses with the real name of an agent or agency or company. I believe that the letters that have no names or addresses should be used as evidence to shut down the perpetrators. If you believe that someone is trying to scam you or a senior citizen that you protect, contact your state’s Attorney General’s Department of Consumer Protection and make a complaint.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. What I most enjoy about playing my flute is the sound that comes out. I love playing my flute; it’s one of my hobbies. I love to see myself improving.”

She said she enjoys the band because it is fun and Carioto makes sure band students are having fun and trying their best.

“I have increased my knowledge in playing my flute in my two years of high school band and I hope to continue to learn more.”

In addition to the band, Carlos is also involved at Bishop Noll in tennis, Drama Club, chess, Women’s Empowerment Club, Science Olympiad, Crochet Club, Environmental Club and National Honor Society.

Freshman Berenice Manuel recently started to learn the violin in Bishop Noll’s band class. She performed “Claire de lune” on the violin for the ISSMA competition.

“It made me really happy because I recently started to play and it was the first time I ever did ISSMA. I enjoy playing music because it’s a way I use to distract myself and lessen stress. I enjoy band because it’s fun playing music with other people. It adds to the excitement of bringing a music piece to life.”

In addition to band, Manuel is in Art Club and plays tennis at Bishop Noll.

Fellow freshman violin player Mackenzie Halas also performed the piece “Claire de lune.”

Halas began to relearn the violin this year at Bishop Noll, having taken lessons in the past.

“I wasn’t expecting to get the medal,” she said. “It made me feel like I did a good job. What I enjoy most about playing music is that I can possibly make someone’s day just by playing a simple note or song for them.”

She enjoys band because everyone plays well together.

“Everyone treats each other like family. I also like our teacher.

He’s a great band teacher and he is always there to help us.”

In addition to band, Halas is in Drama Club, Art Club, ANK club (a club she created for anime and K-pop fans), tennis, basketball and Campus Ministry.

“I plan on joining as much as possible so I can stay active,” she said.

The COVID-19 virus put a halt to many activities at many schools but not at Bishop Noll. The band continues to have a busy year, having played at football games and Masses and conducting a socially distanced outdoor concert this fall. In addition, the band and choir held a virtual Christmas concert, with more than 1,200 views. At Bishop Noll, band is a course offering for all students. The school is currently enrolling students for Fall 2021. Bishop Noll Institute’s band recently made history at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) competition. All competitors from Bishop Noll scored gold medals for the first time in school history.

Students Nyree Ruiz, of Hammond; Rebecca Carlos, of Hammond; Hanna Abuzead, of Hammond; Arianna Magallanes, of Hammond; Alessandra Lopez, of Hammond; Abigail Wojtaszek, of Hammond; Alexis Vega, of East Chicago; Kylie McCabe, of South Holland; MacKenzie Halas, of Griffith; and Berenice Manuel, of East Chicago; all had to prepare and submit their pieces virtually along with more than 800 other school participants from around the state. Songs were judged and scored by music adjudicators.

“I love this process,” said Rocco Carioto, BNI band director. “I receive back a much more accomplished player and they become leaders in the band through their sacrifice and hard work. These kids have proven that pandemic or not, if you keep pushing forward and raising the bar, nothing can stop you.”

Bishop Noll junior Abigail Wojtaszek has played the clarinet for six years and is learning the cello.

She practiced the song “Spirit Dance” for several weeks prior to the ISSMA competition.

“It was nice to win the gold medal. I won it last year as well, so it was good to keep a streak going,” she said. “I enjoy hearing the beautiful melodies that come from playing music. It feels like I’m in control. I enjoy being able to learn new instruments in band. I get to explore other things I may be good at.”

In addition to the band, Wojtaszek is Drama Club president, Environmental Club founder and a representative for the Diocese of Gary Diocesan Youth Council. She is also a member of Crochet Club, Chess Club, Choir, National Honor Society, Academic Superbowl, Speech, golf and Student Ambassadors.

Bishop Noll sophomore Rebecca Carlos plays the flute and has played since seventh grade. For ISSMA, she played a solo called “Adagio.” She also competed as part of a trio performing the song “trio 3” with Ruiz and Abuzead.

Our politics have become so corrosive and divisive that the primary casualty has become common decency and respect. Lately it seems that we dehumanize and view one another with suspicion and contempt, and often we reduce our

neighbors to a label.

This week, Christians around the world will observe the most important event that history has ever recorded. From Good Friday through Easter Sunday we reflect upon prophecy fulfilled, selfless sacrifice and the gift of grace that was freely given to us from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is a great time for us to think about the unmerited grace that has been offered to us. In the true spirit of Easter, let us strive for unity in our conversations as we address our brothers and sisters with humility, repentance, forgiveness, and love. Happy Easter!

Calendar Of Events April 12: ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE Have you heard about the young activists who have been on a hunger strike since early February to protest the injustice of the proposed dirty General Iron plant on the Southeast Side of Chicago? Join us April 12th via Zoom to learn more about General Iron and about the concept of ‘environmental justice.’ Environmental justice refers to the need to redress the fact that environmental degradation falls most heavily on communities of color and on areas of economic deprivation. The move of the polluting General Iron scrap metal plant from Lincoln Park to the Southeast Side of Chicago is a prime example. Urban ecologist Mika Marshall, Illinois Sierra Club’s new Clean Water Advocate, and Caroline Wooten, Illinois Sierra Club’s Organizing Director, will share their insights into environmental justice and discuss examples such as General Iron.

The meeting itself will be held at 7:15 pm on Monday, April 12th on the Zoom platform.

For our May 10th Zoom meeting, we need your tips on the best “Hidden Gems in the Sauk-Calumet Region.” We’re looking for natural areas in or near Will, Kendall, Kankakee, Grundy, and southern Cook counties that are open to the public and that you love to visit. If you’ve got a gem, please email Portia Gallegos at portia. gallegos@illinois.sierraclub.org. We would love to have you talk about your gem at the Zoom meeting. If you prefer, you can tell us all about your favorite place and someone else will do a presentation at the meeting.
