Local School Districts Expected To Receive Over $250 Million As Black communities have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, State Senator Napoleon Harris (D-Harvey) announcing schools in the 15th District are set to receive an estimated $261,020,731 in additional funding to help address the many challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on our Black communities, and I’m glad to see that the Black Caucus’ efforts are helping make a change,” Harris said. “Providing guidelines on how to spend the funding will increase justice for our communities and help them move forward.”

The funding comes as part of the most recent federal COVID-19 relief packages. Schools, students and parents have overcome challenges that no one could have imagined before the pandemic began, including remote and hybrid learning, digital connection issues, new processes for receiving state and federal aid that normally flow through schools, and more.

At least 20% of the funding must be used to address learning loss, but beyond that, school districts can use the money to address many different issues and costs. For example, it can be used to better equip schools for safe learning, to prevent layoffs, to address students’ social and emotional needs, to fund summer programs, or to ensure all students have access to reliable Wi-Fi and technology.

The State Board of Education, in collaboration with other state agencies that address education, has produced a guide for local school districts to help them decide how to best use their resources. While the guide and other state-sponsored services are completely voluntary, the state aims to support local districts during this difficult time.

“Our Black students and teachers were some of the people most impacted by this pandemic, so our local school districts need to use the funds in a way that helps them overcome their barriers,” Harris said. “This federal funding means a lot for Illinois’ education system, and it will go a long way to help the 15th district community.”

In total, Illinois received nearly $7 billion to support local school districts.

Every year, spring puts the wind in my sails and a bounce in my step. It’s the sunshine, warmth, longer days, the greening of everything, the daffodils, the chirping of birds, the re-emergence of new life after the barren winter months.

Every year, the creation-calendar conspires with the Christian calendar to direct our hearts to the Lord Jesus, the Source of new and everlasting life for all who put their trust in him.

On Good Friday, we remember and believe that our Lord Jesus came to give us abundant life. He came as our Substitute. He came to live the life we were supposed to live in covenant with God. He came to die the death we deserve to die as covenant-breakers. “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. Yet we considered him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds, we are healed” (Isaiah 53:4-5). “His dying breath has brought me life – I know that it is finished” (Stuart Townend, ‘How Deep the Father’s Love’).

On Resurrection Sunday, we remember and believe that our Lord Jesus burst forth from the tomb. “Death cannot keep his prey – Jesus my Savior. He tore the bars away – Jesus my Lord” (Robert Lowry, ‘Low in the Grave He Lay’). Those who trust and follow Christ share in his resurrection. His resurrection becomes our resurrection – resurrection from the inside-out. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

The old has gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Will Investors Change Behavior After the Pandemic?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN The COVID-19 pandemic may end up changing our lives in some significant ways. To cite one example, it’s likely we’ll see a lot more people continue to work remotely, now that they’ve seen the effectiveness of tools such as videoconferencing. Education, too, may be forever changed in some ways. Perhaps just as important, though, is how many people may now think more about the future – including how they invest.

If you work with a financial professional, you may have connected with this individual over the past several months through a videoconferencing platform, rather than in person. Some people like this arrangement because it offers more scheduling flexibility and eliminates the time and effort of traveling to and from an appointment. Others, however, still prefer face-to-face contact and look forward to when such arrangements will again be practical and safe for everyone involved. But if you’re in the first group – that is, you prefer videoconferencing – you may now wish to use this communication method in the future, at least some of the time.

But beyond the physical aspects of your investing experience, you may now be looking at some changes in your investment strategy brought on, or at least suggested, by your reactions to the pandemic.

For example, many people – especially, but not exclusively, those whose employment was affected by the pandemic – found that they were coming up short in the area of liquidity. They didn’t have enough easily accessible savings to provide them with the cash they needed to meet their expenses until their employment situations stabilized.

Consequently, some individuals were forced to dip into their long-term investments, such as their 401(k)s and IRAs. Generally speaking, this type of move is not ideal – these accounts are designed for retirement, so, the more you tap into them early, the less you’ll have available when you do retire.

Furthermore, your withdrawals will likely be taxable, and, depending on your age, may also be subject to penalties.

If you were affected by this liquidity crunch, you can take steps now to avoid its recurrence. Your best move may be to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the funds held in a separate, highly accessible account of cash or cash equivalents. Of course, given your regular expenses, it may take some time to build such an amount, but if you can commit yourself to putting away a certain amount of money each month, you will make progress. Even having a few hundred dollars in an emergency fund can help create more financial stability.

Apart from this new appreciation for short-term liquidity, though, the foundation for your overall financial future should remain essentially the same. In addition to building your emergency fund, you should still contribute what you can afford to your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement plans. If you have children you want to send to college, you might still explore college-funding vehicles such as a 529 plan. Higher education will still be expensive, even with an expansion in online learning programs.

Post-pandemic life may contain some differences, along with many similarities to life before. But it will always be a smart move to create a long-term financial strategy tailored to your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance.

Nooooooo Not Today MIKE BUDER Ok, perhaps I’m being a tad dramatic, but this is a plea to all you anxious home sellers out there: STOP DECLINING SHOWINGS! I have recently been on both sides of this issue, and in both cases the cost of the declined showing outweighed any benefit the seller might have perceived in passing on the appointment. ON THE BUYING SIDE: I had an approved buyer that was motivated to purchase quickly. I had three homes to show, and gained entry to only one. The evening ended with us in a darkened front yard, in a light rain, in the cold, wondering why I got a text message canceling the appointment. My buyers were frustrated and wondering out loud if the sellers wanted to sell. ON THE SELLING SIDE: Several of my sellers are understandably anxious.

We often speak of pricing, nearby sales activity, competing listings, strategy and all the other nuances to attract the buzz of a buyer. And no fewer than two of my sellers declined showings this week. “There wasn’t enough notice”. “The place is a mess” or “it’s a bad time”. I don’t dispute that showing your home is sometimes inconve-

nient, uncomfortable and troublesome but honestly, unless there is a steaming pile of dragon dung in your living room you really need to “assume the sale” the way a good salesperson does and open the door. I have said it before that outside of a wedding or a funeral in your living room, you need to allow showings to proceed. I have sold houses when we walked past guests from out of town, college students crashed all over the floor on semester break and barking, foaming at the mouth dogs. I still sold them!

Because if it feels like home, THEY BUY! Even if people are putting on warm coats and galoshes in December a week before Christmas to look at your home, they are probably serious. Let them in.

Carmel Catholic’s 47th Annual Street Scenes Goes Virtual Carmel Catholic High School has shifted its annual Street Scenes Fundraiser to be held as a virtual event this spring. Scheduled for April 9-15 and featuring a wide selection of music performed by a variety of local bands who have graced the event’s stages over the years, the 47th annual Street Scenes will be free to view on the Street Scenes official YouTube Channel.

Each evening will include 90-120 minutes of varying entertainment, along with silent auction opportunities, trips down memory lane for school alumni, guest cameos, Lake Zurich and Waukegan shows, and the always popular Student Variety Show, which will serve as the Grand Finale on the final evening.

The theme for this year’s extravaganza is “Home Sweet Home” and according to event organizers is meant to serve as a thank you to all of its past supporters and entertainers who have tirelessly given their time and energy to help generate more than $11.4 million to support academic programs at Carmel Catholic over the past 46 years.

“COVID may have changed the way we can safely interact with one another, but it can’t stop the love and joy that Street Scenes provides to our Carmel community and those who have faithfully supported the event over the years,” said Michelle Ptasienski, Director of Street Scenes and a 1992 Carmel graduate whose two sons are enjoying their sophomore and senior years at the school.

Street Scenes 2021 will feature more than 40 local bands, all who have been busy pre-recording their performances at the school since December. The week will include different musical content and, in lieu of tickets, refreshments, and the annual casino, those tuning in will have opportunities to make a donation in exchange for Street Scenes commemorative swag.

A large number of area restaurants will support this year’s Street Scenes by donating proceeds of their sales during the week back to Carmel Catholic. The switch from doing most things in real life to practically living online full-time, has been a good distraction for many - like ordering takeout via apps to save us from cooking every day.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Online shopping has soared, and with so little to do, it’s no wonder; what’s not to love about treating yourself to something you certainly don’t need, but you absolutely want for that little endorphin rush?

Well, it all depends on whether you’re doing what’s known as ‘emotional spending’ - where you buy something you might not necessarily need in order to ease your emotions. Rehabs. com, a provider of rehabilitation and addiction treatment resources, conducted a poll of 3,040 respondents, and found that half (50%) of Illinoisans admit to emotional spending during the pandemic (compared to a national average of 51%).

Do we really need a second coffee machine or a third waffle maker? Probably not, but does it make us feel good to see that package coming

to the front door and unwrapping it like it’s Christmas? Yes! Broken down by gender on a national scale, women are more prone to emotional spending (60%) than men (47%).

Nationally, 30% of respondents say they have treated themselves to more expensive, higherquality alcohol during lockdown to try and cheer themselves up. The survey also revealed that 15% of people admit to shopping while drunk during lockdown, and nearly a third (32%) said they tend to do these online shopping sprees when they feel low.

The survey also revealed that about half (45%) of respondents have spent more money shopping online as a direct result of the emotional stress of the pandemic, whether that’s been caused by feelings of isolation from loved ones, personal loss, or general uncertainty about the future. A treat is just the thing to make one feel better even if it’s only temporarily, which explains why more than 1 in 5 say they’ve done some online shopping while feeling stressed, specifically to cheer themselves up.

A Lemon Delight for Any Occasion Sweets with enhanced fruit flavors are often among the best of the best when it comes to family treats. Fruit can add levels of sweet, tart or even citrus flavor to all kinds of recipes.

From grapefruit to berries and lemons, there are a variety of fruits that can take your delightful desserts to the next level of flavor.

For example, these Baked Lemon Donuts are a unique dessert that can double as a sweet, fruity breakfast. Delicious and packed with lemon zest, they are coated in a lemon-sugar topping for a burst of lemon in every bite.

To make this recipe, start with 2 cups of flour in a mixing bowl. Add sugar, baking powder and salt then whisk everything together.

Baked Lemon Donuts Serves: 12 2 cups flour 3/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup buttermilk 2 eggs 2 tablespoons butter, melted 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon lemon zest Lemon Sugar Topping: 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/2 cup butter, melted

Then add buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, lemon juice, vanilla extract and lemon zest to the dry ingredients. Stir until all ingredients are combined to form dough.

Heat oven to 350 F.

Use a piping bag or cut a corner off a re-sealable storage bag then pipe the dough into a donut pan and bake at 350 F for 9 minutes.

Add buttermilk, eggs, butter, lemon juice, vanilla extract and lemon zest. Stir until combined.

In large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Pipe batter into donut pan.

While the donuts are in the oven, add some lemon zest to a half cup of sugar and mix.

Bake 9 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

When they are perfectly baked, dip the tops of each one into some melted butter then into a lemon-sugar mixture.

To make topping: In bowl, combine sugar with lemon zest. In separate bowl, place melted butter.

The end result is fluffy little donuts that are filled with light and scrumptious lemon flavor and covered with lemon sugar for a hard-toresist lemony treat.

Place donut face down in melted butter then face down in lemon sugar topping. Repeat with all donuts.

Late night or early morning, these donuts can leave you – as well as anyone you choose to share them with – craving “just one more.”

WIU Alumnus Releases Recordings of Compositions and Arrangements

A Western Illinois University alumnus recently released a recording of 11 of his compositions and arrangements, with at least one having a connection to his alma mater.

Jeff Ford, a 1981 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music, from Oswego, IL, recently recorded “Saxophoning: The Music of Jeff Ford,” which includes performances with 11 fellow musicians.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic paused Ford’s work as a performing saxophonist, which led to his focus changing to the recording. He said the recording, which has been available to the public for less than one month, has been played on Chicago’s only jazz radio station, and has received some media attention.

“The music is all jazz based, but pretty eclectic in content,” said Ford. “Traditional ‘rhythm changes’ to electronic drum grooves, and the occasional use of the electric saxophone (EWI) will all be heard. The actual content had already been recorded, but the production, artwork, marketing etc. details needed to be attended to. I had the time to do it, so I did.”

One of the tracks on the recording is titled

“Sherman Shuffle,” and the accompanying story is spelled out in the CDs liner notes. Ford said the song is an homage to his time at WIU and waiting in line to register for classes inside the University’s administrative building.

“Back in the days before computers scheduling classes, changing classes, acquiring necessary forms and paperwork etc. required a long walk across campus to the administration building,” he said. “There was no online, only in-line. This walk became affectionately known as the ‘Sherman Shuffle.’”

After his graduation from WIU, Ford received his master’s degree in music from DePaul University in Chicago. He then directed the jazz ensembles and taught applied woodwinds at Waubonsee Community College for 29 years, retiring in 2014. He opened his own business in 1998, which specializes in the repair and restoration of musical instruments.

While at Waubonsee Community College, Ford and the music department there established the Skyway Jazz Festival. The school’s big band performed at jazz festivals throughout the country and was invited to perform at the Black Sea Jazz Festival in 1990.

Jeff has presented masterclasses and clinics throughout the area for middle school, high school and college-level students and ensembles. Some of his favorite masterclass topics are “Beginning to Improvise for the Young Musician, The Art of Improvising (spontaneous composition),” and The Modern Saxophonist (being a chameleon).”

Ford remembers his time at WIU fondly, especially for the friendship he made with saxophone Professor Emeritus Bob Sibbing.

He made annual trips back to Macomb to visit Sibbing until his recent death.

Ford also stays connected to the University by participating in the jazz festivals within the WIU School of Music, and he maintains contacts with many classmates “The skills I acquired, and the people I met at WIU, continue to guide a great deal of my musical journey,” he said.

SSC Student Jaleel Harris named to Illinois Community College Board The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) announced this week the appointment of South Suburban College (SSC) student Jaleel Harris to its 202122 Student Board. Candidate review and voting from the pool of nominations was recently conducted by the ICCB Student Advisory Committee.

Harris, a 26-year old resident of Chicago, first enrolled at SSC after graduating from Homewood Flossmoor High School i n 2012. He is currently studying Business Administration.

“I am honored to serve my students and community through the amazing opportunity,” said Harris. “Here at SSC, our Mission is to serve our students and community through lifelong learning. With pleasure, this is a mission I will honor throughout my professional journey and one I will cherish when performing my respon-

sibilities with the ICCB.” Harris said he has future plans to further his education in Sociology with the goal of starting a foundation focused on the needs of at-risk youth.

“My experience here as both a student and student employee has taught me a variety of values. Most importantly, I have learned the significance of acquired knowledge and service.” Harris added, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, ‘life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?’”

Harris represents the second South Suburban College student elected to serve on the state-wide board. Dr. Lynette Stokes previously became the first SSC President named to the Illinois Community College Board in 2020.

Nursing Homes See 96% Decline In COVID Cases Since Vaccine Rollout

The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), representing more than 14,000 nursing homes and long term care facilities across the country that provide care to approximately five million people each year, released a report today showing nursing homes in the U.S. continue to see a rapid decline in new COVID-19 cases thanks to initial vaccine allocations prioritized for nursing homes and called on Congress to consider the industry’s Care For Our Seniors Act to address systemic issues facing the nursing home sector and prevent another COVID-type crisis.

Recent CMS data shows that nursing homes have seen a 96 percent decline in new COVID cases among residents since the peak during

the week of December 20 of last year when there were more than 30,000 new resident cases. Along with the lowest number of new COVID cases, AHCA/NCAL’s new report shows COVID related deaths in nursing homes declined by 91 percent since December 20, 2020.

“We are not out of the woods yet, but these numbers are incredibly encouraging and a major morale booster for frontline caregivers who have been working tirelessly for more than a year to protect our residents,” said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/ NCAL. “This trend shows that when long term care is prioritized, as with the national vaccine rollout, we can protect our vulnerable elderly population. Now we need Congress to priori-

tize our nursing homes for the long-term by considering the initiatives in the Care For Our Seniors Act to improve the quality of care for our residents.”

AHCA and LeadingAge, recently released the reform agenda, the Care For Our Seniors Act, to address long-standing challenges affecting the quality of care provided in America’s nursing homes. The organizations say the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated systemic issues impacting the nursing home sector, such as workforce shortages, aging physical plants and underfunded government reimbursements for care.

The Care For Our Seniors Act focuses on four key areas for improvement, which include enhancing the quality of care with enhanced standards for infection preventionists, requiring that each nursing home have a registered nurse on-staff, 24 hours per day and requiring a minimum 30-day supply of personal protective equipment in all nursing homes. The initiative also calls for a multi-phase, tiered approach to attract, retain and develop more long term care professionals leveraging federal, state and academic institutions.

While recommending several new ways to improve oversight and processes to support better care and protect residents, the Care For Our Seniors Act also aims to modernize nursing

homes by looking at how the industry could shift to more private rooms, promoting resident privacy and supporting infection control best practices.

AHCA and LeadingAge say reform will be costly, but is long overdue. The nursing home sector has been facing a financial crisis for years even before COVID due to low Medicaid reimbursements, the primary coverage for nursing home residents. The Care For Our Seniors Act calls for an increase in federal Medicaid funds provided to states and bringing the Medicaid rate up to equal the cost of care. Currently, Medicaid only covers 70 to 80 percent of the costs to care for a nursing home resident.

“With a growing elderly population soon needing our services, the moment is now. We must pay tribute to all those who lost their lives to this vicious virus and resolve to bring forth a brighter future,” concluded Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. “We have already seen what progress can be made when policymakers come together to make long term care residents a priority and through these reforms, we can significantly improve the quality of care for our current residents and generations to come.”

Public Art Project to How to Combat Social Isolation Commemorate Chicago Race Riot Partners with NBA Teams A public art project, co-founded by Western Illinois University History Professor Peter Cole to commemorate the deaths caused by the 1919 Chicago Race Riot, has entered into an exciting partnership with two National Basketball Association (NBA) teams to bring programming into Chicago and Tulsa, OK classrooms.

Cole and Franklin Cosey-Gay, executive director of the Chicago Center for Youth Violence Protection, co-direct the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project (CRR19). Its goal is to create and install markers at each of the 38 locations where a life was lost in 1919.

The project is also working in collaboration with the Chicago Bulls and the Oklahoma City Thunder through their Black History Classroom Exchange program, which reflects on the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 and the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. According to a press release from the two teams, the virtual program gives high school students at South Shore International College Prep HS in Chicago and Booker T. Washington HS in Tulsa, OK “a chance to learn about two tragic events in U.S. history often left out of school curriculum.”

Cole said his organization consulted on the planning of the exchange program and are leading one of the sessions this week.

“We’re thrilled that the Bulls invited us to teach high school students in Chicago and Tulsa

about the tragic, yet deeply relevant, history of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919,” said Cole. “Last year’s killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd reconfirmed that racism and inequality persist in our country, yet few people are aware of the 1919 riot, the worst incident of racial violence in Chicago history. We believe that the origin story of Chicago’s persistent, residential segregation lies in 1919, so strive to educate people about our history via presentations, bike tours, and our public art project. We’re excited to unveil the first markers created by our artist partners this summer.”

The goal of the NBA partnership is to “reflect on the past in an effort to empower the future and encourage students to explore ways to expand economic empowerment within their communities,” the two NBA teams said in the release.

CRR19 has gained numerous community partners and endorsements from organizations in an effort to build a community of local artists, educators, citizens and community groups who share the project’s vision.

Even before COVID-19 limited social contact with friends, family and colleagues, many adults experienced loneliness and depression due to limited contact with others. Now, a year after the pandemic forced many people into even greater levels of isolation, the issue of social isolation is especially prevalent in Americans over the age of 50.

Despite the physical implications of a global pandemic, research shows the mental health stakes are high, too. A nationwide survey, commissioned by Barclays, found that half of Americans over the age of 50 said the isolation from their friends and family has been more challenging than concerns over health risks they may face.

Social isolation has provided plenty of time for Americans to reflect on their priorities. The majority of Americans surveyed (90%) have reevaluated their post age-50 goals and put spending more time with family at the top of their lists.

In fact, the most common first thing 50-plus Americans will do once COVID-19 is over is to see and spend time with their families (41%).

“While restrictions are beginning to ease, many older adults are still isolated from friends and family, and that takes a toll on their mental well-being” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of the AARP Foundation. “We must do all we can to help older adults, who have suffered greatly during COVID-19, strengthen the social connections that are so essential to their ability to lead longer, healthier lives.”

With tax time upon us, one message we keep hearing is that you should file as early as possible.

You may recall that last year there were numerous delays in getting tax refunds after the pandemic caught everyone, including the IRS, off guard. If you have a refund coming, the sooner you file, the sooner that refund will make its way into your bank account.

If you’re like most Americans, you also want to do everything you can to reduce your overall tax bill. We all understand that taxes are needed to run the government, but there’s no need for you as an individual to pay more than you owe.

Let’s face it, though. It’s a little late in the game to put into play most steps that can help you reduce your 2020 tax bill. You really need to have done whatever you were going to do before the end of the tax year.

But now is definitely a good time to start thinking about ways you can improve your tax situation for next year. Here are a few areas to consider or understand as you do so: Funding tax-preferenced accounts. One way to save on taxes is by putting money in a variety of tax-preferenced savings accounts such as an IRA, a 401(k), and others. Depending on the account, you can deduct your contribution each year, defer paying taxes on growth, or take withdrawals tax free. In at least one case – health savings accounts – you can do all three.

Since an HSA gives you that triple whammy of tax avoidance, it’s definitely something you want to consider. although there are eligibility requirements you need to meet. Also, unlike retirement accounts, an HSA can only be used for medical expenses. With a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA, you don’t get that triple whammy that comes with an HSA, but there are still significant tax advantages. With a traditional IRA, you don’t pay taxes on your contributions, and you defer taxes on the account’s growth. You do pay taxes on withdrawals you make in retirement. A Roth IRA has different advantages.

You can’t deduct your contributions now, but your money grows tax free and you aren’t taxed when you make withdrawals.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, the challenges that COVID-19 brought include a higher risk of identity theft, with 89,390 reports of tax identity theft in 2020, compared with 27,450 reports in 2019. Last year alone, the FTC received more than 2.2 million reports about fraud, with people reporting losses of nearly $3.3 billion.

“Scammers have used the pandemic to prey on Hoosiers and convince them to give out their personal information,” Aylesworth said.

“Understanding the signs of a scam and taking precautions can save you from this situation.”

The Internal Revenue Service reports scammers use mail, telephone or email to deceive individuals, businesses, and payroll and tax professionals. According to the IRS, the bureau does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information.

The IRS is reminding the public to avoid scams including unethical ghost tax return preparers who do not sign tax returns they prepare, emails or text messages asking for personal and financial information, and imposters who call taxpayers claiming to be IRS employees using fake names and identification badge numbers.

they think of these solely as a way to save for a child’s college education. But a 529 can also be used to pay for private school in elementary and high school if you so desire. The big tax advantage with a 529 is that you don’t pay federal income taxes on the account’s growth, but you must spend the money on qualified educational expenses and nothing else.

That last point is important to remember and understand because if you use the money for other reasons, you will pay taxes on that withdrawal and you will also pay a penalty. A 529 account is definitely something to consider if you have children or grandchildren and want a tax-efficient way to save either for K-12 or college educations.

Making charitable contributions. Charitable contributions are a powerful tool for reducing your tax bill, and they come with the added bonus of allowing you to make a positive impact in your community or the world. What could be better? Through charitable contributions, you can reduce your income tax, your capital gains tax, and your estate tax. Some people view this in the most straightforward way – you choose a worthy cause that qualifies under the tax rules, and you write a check. But there are other taxadvantaged ways to approach charitable giving. Here’s just one of many examples: You can establish a donor-advised fund, which is a personal charitable account opened in the name of one or more donors and held in custody by a nonprofit organization. How does that work?

Let’s say you sell a stock and, instead of paying the capital gains tax, you place the proceeds in a donor-advised fund. You can claim the full amount as a charitable deduction, but you don’t have to donate the money all at once. The money remains in the fund and can be donated in small amounts over a period of years. All the while it is drawing interest.

These are just a few examples of strategies you can consider as you seek ways to reduce that tax bill. Certainly, all of this is complicated, but your financial professional should be able to help you work your way through the IRS weeds and find what works best for you and your personal situation.

Inside the Largest and Fastest COVID-19 Vaccine Operation By plane, boat and foot, 2 billion COVID-19 vaccines are making their way to some of the most remote corners of the globe as part of the largest and fastest vaccine operation in history.

To help ensure an equitable global vaccine distribution and end the pandemic as quickly as possible, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and partners have been called upon by GAVI, the global vaccine alliance, to lead procurement and distribution efforts for the COVAX Facility, helping vaccines reach 180 countries by the end of 2021.

The largest vaccine buyer in the world, UNICEF reaches almost half the population of children with routine immunizations every year and has 75 years of experience responding to public health emergencies around the globe.

Before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the organization was already providing support, and has delivered more than 200 million masks to more than 100 countries.

From Warehouse to Health Facility From its humanitarian warehouse that can deliver supplies anywhere within 72 hours, UNICEF is expected to transport up to 850 tons of COVID-19 vaccines per month in 2021, more than double its average vaccine shipment. To support this increase, the organization established the Humanitarian Airfreight Initiative where more than 10 leading airlines have committed to prioritizing shipments of COVID-19 vaccines, essential medicines, medical devices and other critical supplies.

The organization is also working with governments, helping prepare their infrastructures to rapidly receive vaccines. To store and preserve doses, 70,000 cold-chain fridges, in-

cluding solar fridges, will be installed in health facilities mainly in Africa by end of year.

Protecting Communities

To promote safe vaccinations, health care workers are partaking in training on COVID-19 vaccine storage, handling and administration.

The organization expects to provide 1 billion syringes for injections and 5 million safety boxes for proper needle disposal. Each safety box carries 100 syringes and helps prevent accidental needle injuries that could potentially transmit blood borne diseases.

A Long Road to Recovery For children and families around the world, this recovery effort is crucial. According to UNICEF data, this is the first year that poverty rates are expected to increase in 25 years.

Additionally, 6.7 million children are at risk of severe malnutrition due to food insecurity caused by COVID-19, and over 1 billion children were forced out of school since lockdowns began.

Equitable access to a vaccine helps mitigate public health and economic impacts of the pandemic. Only once the spread slows and stops can people begin to reimagine and build a better future for children and families. This mission takes a joint effort, starting in laboratories and warehouses and ending in local communities.

Our greatest obstacle are neighbors who have years of accumulated junk in plain view for potential buyers. The neighbors are very nice people and we have expressed my concern regarding the adverse affect their junk is having on the sale of our property. They have been working hard at clean up and we do notice a difference. But it’s just not quite enough and ultimately their definition of valuable things and a good looking home are far different than mine. What can we do?

Answer: Since you have friendly relations with the neighbors, and since the neighbors seem willing to be helpful, you could offer to clean up the area. However, this is an approach with red flags. They would either like the idea (because you would be doing the

work), or they would resent the suggestion and do nothing.

Alternatively, if a vacant property has been on the market for eight months perhaps the problem is not the neighbors. It may be that your perception of value and attractiveness are not consistent with marketplace realities.

Speak with your broker and see if the marketing plan is being followed. If yes, see if it needs to be changed in light of evolving market conditions.

On March 24, 2021, I received a fax from the husband of a client from Lowell, Indiana.

He was upset. His wife got a medical bill for $86.24 and did not know why. He faxed to me the bill with this message.

My wife was charged $86.24 for medical services. Insurance was supposed to cover this expense. She was told to put this to Woody’s attention and it would be handled by your firm.

Fortunately, it was a simple problem and I handled it the same day that I got the fax from the husband.

First, I checked our records of the client and phoned her Medicare supplement insurance company. I confirmed that the only reason the insurance company did not pay on the claim was because MEDICARE NEVER SENT THE CLAIM INFORMTION TO IT. That happens thousands of times every day to Medicare enrolled seniors all over the country.

Second, I sent a letter to the medical service provider and explained what Medicare failed to do and asked them to send the needed information to the correct Medicare supplement insurance company so that it could pay the bill.

Third, I requested that Medicare send its claim report on this bill to our client.

Fourth, I wrote a letter to the client and explained what I had done for her. Also, I told her that Medicare was sending to her the claim report. I asked that when she got that, she should get that to me so that I could

compare it with the medical bill. I want to see if there is any other fact or problem with the medical bill so that I can be proactive in helping to protect our client.

This was a simple problem caused by Medicare being so slow in updating the Medicare file of a senior citizen. In the case of our client from Lowell, she switched from one insurance company to another on January 1, 2021. She went to a medical appointment on January 23, 2021 but Medicare did not update her file until almost 90 days later. So, when the claim for January 23 was filed with Medicare, Medicare sent the claim report to the client’s old insurance company instead of to the current Medicare supplement insurance company.

Remember, this was a simple problem that I was able to handle the same day. More complex problems take more time. Our insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” to protect our client from the financial problems that the Medicare system creates for seniors. And we don’t charge our clients a cent for helping them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service to clients, why not switch to our agency?
