Financial Issues Facing Women Business Owners SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN As a business owner, you’re always busy, so it’s understandable if you’ve put off thinking about events that won’t occur until far in the future – such as your retirement, the sale or transfer of your business and the settling of your estate. Nonetheless, it’s a good idea to start planning now, while also recognizing the special challenges that women business owners face in these areas. Essentially, you’ll have four key issues to consider: Building assets – While you’re working, you’ll want to build as many financial assets as possible. This is especially important in case your career is interrupted by the need to provide care for children or parents. And there’s also the matter of longevity: On average, a 65-year-old woman can anticipate living about 20 more years – almost three years longer than a 65-year-old man, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, the average age of widowhood is just 59, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Given these concerns, you’ll want to contribute as much as you can afford to a retirement account, such as an “owneronly” 401(k), a SEP-IRA or a SIMPLE IRA. A financial professional can help you choose an appropriate plan. Planning an exit strategy – How you transition from your business can affect your estate plans, in terms of the assets you leave behind and which family members are connected to your exit strategy. To illustrate: You could choose to pass your business to an adult child or other close relative, but if you have no family members willing to take on this responsibility, you could transfer ownership through an employee buyout, if you have employees, or you could sell the busi-

ness outright to a third party. Whichever route you choose will need to be integrated into your overall retirement and estate plans. Caregiving – As mentioned above, you might take some time off work to care for your children or aging parents. In fact, two of every three caregivers in the United States are women, according to the CDC. Being a caregiver can incur emotional and financial costs. To help avoid entangling your finances with those of the family members to whom you’re providing care, you may want to consider creating a durable financial power of attorney, a legal document that gives you the authority to make financial decisions on behalf of someone who may be incapable of making them on their own. You’ll want to address the possible need for this document well before it needs to be activated. Creating estate-planning documents – You will need to work with a legal professional to create estate-planning arrangements such as a will and a living trust, relevant businessplanning documents, powers of attorney and health care directives. If your situation is complex enough, you also may need to bring in a trust company to manage the assets placed in a trust and oversee the eventual transfer of these assets to beneficiaries. A lot goes into preparing for retirement, developing estate plans and keeping them current. So, start early and get the help you need from experienced professionals. The more thorough your planning, the more control you’ll have over your future. #CCMonth: The Community College Advantage More than 100 years ago, community colleges were created as publicly funded institutions of higher education at community-based facilities. They began a policy of welcoming all who wished to learn, regardless Terry R. Wells, Chairman, of age, race, gender, South Suburban College wealth or previous Board of Trustees academic experience. ––––––––––––––––––––––– The foundation of diversity, equity and inclusion. Community colleges have championed these ideals since inception. Today there are more than 1,100 community colleges in the United States sharing common goals of accessibility with a commitment to high quality lifelong learning. Community colleges allow students to positively impact their lives, their families and their communities. Everyone knows someone who is the product of the community college system. For some, it may have been a stepping stone toward an advanced degree, for others it may have been the last beacon of hope that inspired a newfound career path. A child, relative, friend, neighbor, or colleague who became a nurse, attained a specialized skill to return to work, earned a GED, was a first-generation graduate, transferred

on scholarship to the University of Illinois, or even became a basketball national champion. No matter the goal, the success stories are all around us. In spite of – at times – misconceptions, naysayers or even critics, the positive evidence is overwhelming when brought to light. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated the significant impact community colleges have on student outcomes, on training a skilled workforce, and on the local economy. In fact, a 2021 economic impact study by Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies revealed the Illinois Community College system accounts for $3.5 billion in economic output and more than 43,000 jobs throughout the State. Now in 2022, community colleges have emerged from an ongoing pandemic stronger than ever. New educational platforms, class delivery methods and student service models provide various opportunities for students to choose their own destiny. All while remaining a fraction of the tuition cost at the nearest university. And let us not forget the free community health role many of our institutions have played, most recently. So, as we take a moment to recognize national Community College Month, let’s make sure we celebrate our shared reinvestment in an old core value: accessibility. Afterall, it’s what we’ve done better than anyone since 1901. Share your community college stories on social media by tagging posts with #CCMonth.

This Illinois Realtor can also make you an up front offer to buy your South Suburban property. CASH • AS-IS • QUICK CLOSING • NO COMMISSION

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Enraged, you snatch a precious pitcher from the table and hurl it to the floor. It smashes into a million pieces, scattered far and wide. You cannot undo what you have just done. When the First Adam rebelled against God, he shattered something precious. Sin has shattered creation, our relationships with God and others, and ourselves. The process of disintegration and breakdown continues in our fallen world. Our bodies, too, disintegrate. “You are dust and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19b, ESV). Imagine someone recorded your pitcher smashing to smithereens. Later, she plays the video in reverse. Shattered fragments merge from every corner of the room, like a 3-D puzzle, in the shape of your precious pitcher. For a split second you see the network of cracks between the pieces. Then they disappear. Your pitcher jumps back into your hands, which set it back on the table. That’s the process Jesus Christ, the Final Adam, initiated when he rose from the dead, on Resurrection Sunday. His death and resurrection in our place were the turning point of cosmic history. When he rose with the glorified, indestructible 2.0 version of his body, he initiated the reversal of the Great Shattering unleashed by the First Adam. All who entrust themselves to the care and control of Christ participate in that Great Reversal. His resurrection becomes your resurrection. He restores your shattered relationship with God through repentance and faith. His power begins to restore your shattered relationships with others and your shattered inner self. When he returns at the end of time, he will reverse the disintegration of your body, by raising you with a Body 2.0, like his own. Finally, he will reverse the disintegration of creation itself. That’s the good news of Easter. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church (cfcsh.org)

Speaking Of Seniors

They Already Got the Money

WOODROW WILCOX

On April 13, 2022, I wrote a letter to a medical service or supply firm for a client who lives in Valparaiso. I researched the medical billing problem and wrote the letter. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the billing firm. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill from your firm seeks a balance of $147.16 on Account Number XXXXXX for services rendered on 02/23/2022. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement plan insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. The secondary insurer reported that your bill to our client is false. Here is why. The insurance company paid your firm $168.10 in March. That was a combination of part of the client’s Part B annual deductible and coinsurance. The $168.10 was part of a bulk payment of $242.16. The payment was made by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) through XXXXXXX. To verify this, contact XXXXXXX at 877-XXX-XXXX. Please, do not bother our client about this bill any more. You have been paid. Our client was charged NOTHING for our assistance. This insurance agency cares about our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does? This one does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

A Realtor Is Not An Expense MIKE BUDER I wouldn’t think of going mountain climbing without some professional guidance. I remove splinters but I wouldn’t feel comfortable about taking out an appendix or spleen. I can clean my own teeth, but fillings and crowns go beyond my understanding. In time, I could learn to do most anything but, some things are better left to professional career-minded people who do them constantly. Real estate is one of those things. Anyone can buy, sell, trade or invest. I am not challenging the capability of a person and what they can do if they put their mind to it. But I am saying that there are times where the prudent, most sensible thing to do is to spend your money correctly to accomplish a need or want. A real estate agent is a tool that when wielded correctly does what it is supposed to do. In a transaction that involves a large amount of money, a team should be formed to accomplish the necessary moves to either get in or out of a transaction. When entering into something for the first time, it is important to be informed and/ or protected to some reasonable degree… camping comes to mind. If you don’t already have a handy reliable reference or friends who camp out, then you go to a place that sells camping stuff and they will question

you so they can make proper recommendations. Sleeping bags, tents, utensils, and general discussion will insure the layman’s success and lead to the enjoyment of camping out. Getting poison ivy, not being able to start a fire, storing food properly, keeping warm, staying dry and setting up camp are all things you have to know. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! I might add, real estate is not a do over activity. In fact, if not done right, litigation can creep into the mix and prior to that is the ill feeling and lack of wellbeing that will rob you of any life-joy. Why spend unnecessary negative time and money trying to undo what should have been done correctly to begin with. Real estate agents can pilot your transaction effectively and efficiently, so hire up, relax and enjoy the deal. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your comments are always welcome. The Issue of Assurance One Perspective Many Christians struggle with the concept of their assurance. The result of this can be distress and uneasiness when reading a passage such as Matthew 7:23. In that scripture, the Lord addresses someone who has passed and comes before Him; He says “I never knew you, depart from me…” We may think we are living the Christian life but perhaps a quiet voice within us speaks: how can I know if Christ will deny my existence when I see Him face to face? Eternal life begins here on earth once we accept the Lord as our Savior. If we have cultivated a personal relationship with the Lord during our lives here, we should expect to know Him and be known by Him when we come face to face with Him. When dealing with our own issues related to the question of “how can I be sure”, perhaps it is helpful to look at whether we are living in an actual relationship with the Lord during our Christian walk. Cultivating a personal relationship with the Lord begins with knowing Him: we learn first, through scripture, that Jesus is “the Word”, then Jesus tells us He “is the Way”, and then we are informed there is no other way to eternal life than through Him. The Word is the Bible; we are informed and educated about who the Lord is, why we are here, and how we are to live. We live in a time where communication is not always a face-to-face encounter. When

you are close to someone, you do a lot to get to know who they are, what is important to them, how you can become closer to them, and what they expect of you. You keep in touch almost constantly; you ask them for advice, you go to them with your fears and joys. You show appreciation for them and thank them; you express gratitude for their presence in your life as your friend. Many times these expressions aren’t conveyed face-to-face but rather through internet posts, text messages, emails or even a phone call. The point of the example is that you do not actually have your friend in front of you where your eyes see them or your hands can reach out and touch them. In a personal relationship with the Sovereign God, you would be doing all these things without seeing Him face-to-face. This would not change the fact that nothing is impossible for Him, nothing surprises Him, and He knows everything about us. We could spend hours talking to someone in our life about our issues and they would never understand completely; they would never “get it” like God would and does about every part of our life, every day of our lives. There will be more to follow on this topic for those of us who are Christians. If you are NOT a Christian and want to know more, please reach out to a Christian friend or go to a church that adheres to Bible based teaching. - Sara

Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Why do people still buy houses? I fail to see any need to own real estate unless you’re flipping homes! Answer: There are arguments both ways, but when you take the positives and negatives of home ownership and compare them, home ownership wins. It’s nice knowing the home is “YOURS.” You can’t have a lease terminated. You can upgrade, fix up and decorate. There is a nice mental comfort in that. You get a fixed monthly cost in your mortgage. How many things stay the same price over 30 years? Well, your mortgage does! If you itemize your deductions on Schedule A of your 1040, you can deduct the mortgage interest and property taxes you’ve paid. Meanwhile, if you’re a tenant, you will keep paying, and paying a lot more. Rents are expenses that are rising at record rates, while homes are rising in value. People often cite an advantage of renting that they don’t need to pay for certain things a homeowner pays for like maintenance, up-

keep, taxes, etc. From a practical point of view, that’s wrong. You do pay for all that when you’re on a lease, it’s just not called maintenance or upkeep or anything like that. It’s called RENT. In other words, the person who owns your apartment has certain expenses, like taxes and maintenance. They may or may not have a mortgage. They also have a certain amount of capital tied up in the apartment. You can be sure that the rent they collect, more than offsets those expenses, and offsets the cost of tying up that much capital. Real estate investing must have some merit, since it has created 90% of the world’s millionaires. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home?
