Rebuilding Small Businesses: Volunteers Wanted Are you a successful corporate executive with deep business knowledge? Or a social media maven who guided a corporate brand to big time success? Maybe, you’re a public speaker and trainer that can inspire small business owners to climb to new heights of success. Or a savvy entrepreneur who has launched successful startups?

If so, then consider volunteering with SCORE, the nation’s largest network of volunteer, expert business mentors and help small businesses recover from the economic devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Your skills are valuable, needed and appreciated by small business clients and entrepreneurs,” according to SCORE CEO Bridget Weston. “Volunteer to join our community of more than 10,000 volunteers in 1,500 communities. You’ll find a wealth of support and build back small business where you live.”

Only about a third of small business owners reported turning a profit in 2020. Black and Hispanic-owned small businesses were particularly hard hit. Only 8.8% of Black business owners and 6.7% of Hispanic business owners reported profitability and growth last year, according to research conducted by SCORE.[1] SCORE welcomes all volunteers and offers a variety of ways to get involved based on the time you have to give and your interests and expertise. You don’t have to be retired to volunteer with SCORE (which was formerly known as the Service Corps of Retired Executives), notes Weston. Today, half of SCORE’s volunteers are actively employed or running their own businesses.

Volunteer roles include: Subject matter expert - Volunteer 2-10 hours per month and consult with mentors and business owners to answer questions in your area of expertise. Share your know-how and professional knowledge in e-commerce, accounting, human resources, social media or anything else and be an invaluable resource for small business owners.

Local workshop presenter – Share your mas-

tery of a business topic or strategy and deliver local business training for small business owners. The time required can be as little as 2-10 hours for each presentation.

Business mentor – SCORE mentors provide hands-on assistance to local small business owners or aspiring entrepreneurs, helping develop business plans and a roadmap for growth. Mentors have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as broad expertise as a business owner or upper-level manager. This role requires training and then 15-20 hours per month of volunteer time.

The benefits of volunteering with SCORE include networking with local and national business experts and building new community relationships through the local SCORE chapter, notes Weston. Volunteers also expand their own skillsets through training, and receive local and national recognition. Helping others is extremely rewarding, and many SCORE volunteers value supporting the small business community where they live and knowing they are making a genuine difference.

Volunteering through SCORE creates a positive, tangible impact. In 2020, SCORE volunteers donated nearly four million hours of service and helped start 45,027 new businesses. They also supported the creation of 119,562 jobs and mentored 143,651 small business clients, many of whom reported higher revenues and business growth.

“My hard work is worth it when I read the emails saying how grateful people are for SCORE’s help,” said Toma Talpa, a volunteer with SCORE Chicago. “I chose SCORE because of its mission and because of the people who volunteer. They are all passionate about helping entrepreneurs and business owners achieve their goals. It always amazes me that all of the resources and national workshops that SCORE provides are free to anyone.”

SIUE Spring Commencement Class of 2021 Graduates List Southern Illinois University Edwardsville completed 2021 Spring Commencement exercises for more than 2,325 eligible graduates during the first two weekends in May at both outdoor and indoor venues.

What A ‘Team Health Assessment’ Reveals About Your Business As the nation works its way out of the pandemic and associated economic troubles, some business leaders may fret about their company’s strength going forward.

Perhaps it’s time for those businesses to assess just how well their teams are performing.

“It’s always helpful to take an overview of your company, exploring both the strengths and the weaknesses to see where you can do better,” says Jeanet Wade, the ForbesBooks author of The Human Team: So, You Created a Team But People Showed Up! (www.thehumanteambook.com).

Here’s a hint: Wade says a company’s strengths ultimately come down to its people and how well leaders are able to communicate goals and strategies to them.

“Regardless of what industry sector you’re in, business leadership is people leadership,” says Wade, founder of the consulting firm the Business Alchemist. “No matter how automated or systematized work becomes, inspiration, innovation, and the highest level of problem-

solving requires the highest level of human thinking.”

That’s why Wade suggests it’s useful for leaders to ask themselves a few questions about how well their business is doing in relation to their teams. Wade provides a more in-depth “team health assessment” online, but a few initial areas to consider in giving your organization a self assessment include: Strategy. Does your team have a clearly articulated strategy or plan? “People on teams sorely need clarity, or they’ll lapse into confusion,” Wade says. “Specifically, team members must understand the purpose of the team itself, their role within it, the team’s outcome goals, and how this team fits within the larger organization.” Many leaders don’t communicate the organization’s larger vision and strategy because they believe employees won’t understand it or will get derailed by the minutiae of revenue projections, profit goals, and the like, she says.

“But if someone is familiar with strategy and its envisaged implementation, they’ll possess

the vision and clarity to guide themselves through obstacles or small misunderstandings that inevitably arise,” Wade says. “Even if they don’t understand every task and step along the way, they can trust in the larger purpose and visualize the final outcome.”

Team building. Does your team participate in regular team building and trust building activities? There are many such exercises on the market that can help team members connect with each other. Wade refers to one activity she likes to use as 3-2-1. People in a group are asked to share three events they’ve experienced, how they responded to them, and how those events impacted them. Then they share two childhood stories or coming-of-age adolescent memories. Finally, they share one of their biggest fears.

Contribution. Is it evident that each team member is contributing their best version of themselves to the team? “As leaders, it’s important for us to acknowledge the human psyche’s need to contribute and reward it,” Wade says.

Habitat for Humanity of NWI Receives Funding from Crown Point Community Foundation Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana uses Crown Point Community Foundation grant to help build new home in Lowell, Indiana.

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana recently received a $5,000 grant from the CPCF Unrestricted Grant Fund through the Crown Point Community Foundation serving south Lake County, Indiana. Thanks to this grant, Habitat began work on the Lowell home in April 2021.

“A home is so much more than just a place to

live. We are pleased to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanities to help make this build in Lowell a reality, providing a beautiful and affordable home for the Sagissor family to call their own and create many happy memories with their family,” said Mary Nielsen, President of the Crown Point Community Foundation.

“Safe, decent, and affordable housing is critical to the safety and welfare of every family. As affordable homeownership has become an even

greater challenge for many families, we are so grateful to partner with the Crown Point Community Foundation, to stabilize a family in Lowell, Indiana,” Dawn Michaels, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana.

“Every time a family is stabilized, the community grows stronger right along with them.”

I called my agent the next morning and gave him our top dollar. However, the house was sold to the first bidders, and we were never asked to counter bid! Answer: All sellers have different motivations and interests. It may well be that the first bid met all the owners’ criteria and that they no longer wished to continue marketing the home.

Could they have gotten more money? Perhaps, but selling a home involves a certain psychological cost and some owners simply want to sell as quickly as possible and move on.

You were told that there was an existing bid on the property -- a bid that could be accepted at any moment prior to withdrawal.

Your bid was not made until the next morning. It’s perfectly possible that the first bid was accepted even as yours was being developed. Once a bid has been accepted, the property is under contract and the sellers have no obligation to consider other offers.

Lastly, price is only one consideration in an offer. While a higher price is surely an enticement, there may have been other factors which attracted the sellers.

TOTALLY MEDICARE’S FAULT WOODROW WILCOX On May 10, 2021, I reviewed some papers that a client had brought to our office for my examination. The client is from Crown Point.

The client had two claims in question. One claim was for January 20, 2021 in which Medicare ruled that the patient’s Medicare Part B annual deductible portion that the client should pay was $198.96. The other claim was for March 4, 2021 in which Medicare ruled that the patient’s Medicare Part B annual deductible portion that the client should pay was $81.70.

But that is impossible. The total amount for Medicare Part B annual deductible claims for 2021 must not add to more than $203.

The Part B balance of the two claims mentioned adds to $280.66. That is almost $80 more than what it should be. Medicare’s arithmetic stinks.

Medicare caused this problem. The patient, his insurance company, his insurance agency, and the medical equipment providers DID NOT CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. Medicare and only Medicare caused this problem.

Because of Medicare’s bad math, the client is being billed for amounts that he really does not owe. This is a mess. But I phoned the client and made an appointment with him to visit me at my office so that we could make phone calls together to get Medicare to fix its mistakes.

All the help that I am giving this client is FREE OF CHARGE. Sims moves to ensure affordable housing for community college students Senator Elgie Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) passed legislation out of a Senate committee today to give community college boards of trustees and local housing authorities permission to develop affordable housing for community college students.

“This is about bettering the college experience for every student in this state,” said Sims.

“Research shows that students who live on campus have higher GPAs. When students live on campus they are more plugged-in to the campus community and have more opportunities to join clubs, attend events and meet new people.”

Under current law, community colleges do not have the right to own student housing. In order for community schools to develop affordable

housing for students, the process must be administered through a local Housing Authority or nonprofit organization.

Proponents of the bill also suggest that restricted housing on community college campuses fail to meet the needs of every student.

Traditionally, community colleges catered to students living within a reasonable driving distance of the school. And while that arrangement works for some students, more students are facing a lengthy and costly commute that poses a challenging barrier to those living at a distance, including international students.

House Bill 374 passed out of the Senate Higher Education Committee and moves to the full Senate for consideration.

The South Suburban College Baseball Team captured their 13th Regional Championship on Friday following a 3-0 tournament sweep at Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs earned a 16-8 victory over Kishwaukee College, followed by 8-4 and 16-6 wins over Triton College. The Bulldogs improved their season record of 41-17 – the 12th time they have reached the 40-win mark in school history.

“I am very proud of the hard work and dedication this group of players and coaches have put in,” said Head Coach Steve Ruzich. “It’s been four years since our last title and it feels good to bring the Regional Championship back to SSC.” In the 16-6 Championship win over Triton, the Bulldogs were led by a solid start from freshman RHP Tommy Windt, who gave up just 1 earned run in 7 innings to get the win. The Bulldogs struck early and often with a 5-run second inning capped by sophomore Logan Anderson’s bases clearing double.

The rest of the offense was provided by Tommy Windt (3-4), Conner Tomasic (2-4), JJ Rivera (1-3 with 4 RBI) and Jake Mucha (1-3 with 3 RBI). South Suburban’s Conner Tomasic, RHP and IF, was named the Regional Tournament MVP. The sophomore was lights out on the mound with a win and 8 strikeouts while going 5-9 at the plate with 4 RBI for the Bulldogs.

The 2021 Baseball Team boasts one of the top offenses in school history with an overall team batting average of .342 and 558 total runs scored – both top 5 in the Bulldogs record book. The team also had a season high 15-game winning streak from March 10 – April 1.

“This has been the hardest working group of guys I have been around,” Assistant Baseball Coach Marty Joyce. “We pushed them extremely hard this offseason, and they showed up every day with a willingness to get better. That is all you can ask for as a coach.”

Next up, the Bulldogs will host the District Tournament this week and play Wabash Valley College at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 19th. The District Tournament will consist of South Suburban, Wabash Valley, Indian Hills (IA), and Kaskaskia. So, during your initial meeting, and at subsequent reviews afterward, here are some of the key areas you’ll discuss: Feelings about your financial situation – Numbers are important to financial advisors, but what’s most meaningful to them is understanding what’s important to their clients.

For the second consecutive year, a South Suburban College Men’s Basketball player has been named National Player of the Year for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II. Sophomore guard Deshawndre Washington, of Morgan Park High School, added the highest accolade to his multiple awards garnered this season in leading the Bulldogs to a 20-6 record and 8th Place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

“I am extremely happy for, and proud of Deshawndre,” said Coach Pigatti. “He carried this team on his back all season long – quite an accomplishment considering the impact of COVID-19 this year. He really matured and developed his overall game. Deshawndre has a bright future and great things are destined for him.”

Washington averaged 27 points, 13.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.8 blocks, and 2.7 steals per game during the 2021 campaign. He was also named to the NJCAA National Championship All-Tournament Team, Region IV Player-of-the Year, Midwest District Tournament MVP, and NJCAA 1st Team All-American. This is the second year in a row and now fourth player in nine years to win National Player of the Year for the South Suburban program and Coach Pigatti.

Star Studded Guitar Smash Marks Grand Opening of New Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana

In true Hard Rock tradition, the new Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana celebrated its grand opening with a legendary Guitar Smash on Friday morning featuring Tito and

Marlon Jackson, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray and Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. Musicians Kym Mazelle, Crystal Taliefero and Deniece Williams, all of whom are Gary natives, also

participated. Leading the smash were Hard Rock International COO Jon Lucas; Chairman Marcellus Osceola of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Matt Schuffert President, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana. The $300 Million casino and entertainment destination officially opened to the public on Friday, May 14 at 5 p.m. The 200,000-square foot entertainment complex includes a massive gaming space, five food venues an on-site sportsbook, a retail shop, and a 1,954-seat Hard Rock Live performance venue.

The Royal Family of Music – the Jacksons – are featured prominently throughout the property.

DOGE and BITCOIN are not the only things that have been going “to the moon” over the past year. Real estate prices have also risen on the national level in the average range of 10-12%. Even with that in mind, I believe we’re in the midst of one of the most favorable housing markets for buyers when it comes to affordability. Many of the prospective buyers out there who are on the fence about buying or “waiting for the dip” might be disappointed if home values continue to rise, markets continue to be competitive, and everything gets more expensive as builders struggle to keep up with demand. A good reason for buying now is that the real estate inventory issues most likely will not disappear overnight. However, what could put a huge damper on affordability is the expected increase to interest rates as the inflation-

ary metrics have skyrocketed and that trend is expected to continue. Historically, with inflation comes increased mortgage rates, which could turn a competitive and affordable market into a competitive and unaffordable market. This would make the best time to buy yesterday, but the next best time to buy today.

While the price tags on homes may not seem affordable and bidding wars continue to drive up prices, based on historical data and forecasts in terms of wage inflation and home appreciation the market is still presenting a great opportunity for prospective buyers. So, putting in the extra effort (and money) to get a home today should be worthwhile for people in the long run in most markets. This is especially true if there is a mortgage involved with the purchase.

Franchisee’s Growth Reflects Including More Voices Essential Ingredients Of Success In Decisions May Bring The year 2020 will always be synonymous with words like “tragic,” “traumatic,” and “tough.”

For Mosquito Authority® franchise owner B.J. Bacha, it was certainly challenging, but it was also a year when being involved in an essential business brought out the full value in being a franchisee. As many other businesses were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic and people were quarantined most of the year, home and the yard were their main refuge – and a pest control service was top of mind.

“There was that panic in March and April last year when we thought at our franchise, ‘Are we going to get shut down?’ “ said Bacha. “We were trying to come up with a game plan if that happened. Then we were deemed essential, and the demand on our services soon started to overcome our supply.

“So many people were stuck at home and not able to take a vacation. So they called us because they planned to spend as much time as possible in their yard. It hammered home the best point of all of being a franchisee in any industry: being a great service to your community.”

Bacha and business partner Ryan Hahn reaped nice recognition for their service when the company named their Charlotte, N.C., outlet franchisee of the year for 2020.

“We made some changes in our office, and the key often as a franchisee is finding people who can do what you do, but do it with more efficiency and take pride in it,” Bacha says.

“We have some good team players who really pushed to make 2020 as good as it was for our franchise. It was challenging, but definitely rewarding and a good learning opportunity.”

Bacha says an entrepreneurial spirit is helpful in following a franchise path for a career, and he definitely had one as a boy – selling baseball cards at the age of 8 and cutting grass. Those pursuits also grew his customer service skills, which he thinks go hand-in-hand with managerial ability to find success as a franchisee.

When demand for their franchise services in Charlotte last summer was too high for their available staff to satisfy quickly, Bacha said customers appreciated it when his team set proper expectations while getting them on the schedule for yard treatments as soon as they could.

“Our customer service team is incredible,” Bacha says. “We try to be the Chick-fil-A of the mosquito/pest industry, so when customers call in, they leave that conversation feeling warm and fuzzy. In the service industry, that’s very dif-

ficult to offer, but we really push to do so.

“It’s all about making every effort to make the customer’s experience positive. We can all look at our own negative experiences we’ve had with companies over products and services.

After the call you rub your head and say, ‘That was painful.’ I want our franchise to bring a smile to your day. There’s not enough of that in the world to begin with, so if we can add a little bit of that and provide a good service, it’s a win-win.”

Bacha and Hahn were partners in a children’s fitness center before their Mosquito Authority® franchise, which began as a side job for Bacha, grew into a busy full-time gig. Their first season with the franchise was in 2010, and their customer base has grown 10 times as big since then.

“It’s due mainly to old-school referrals,” Bacha says. “Customers are our best ambassadors.

They tell their friends. That’s the way it is in many industries. And as our territory expanded around and outside of Charlotte, we kept seeing the need for it.”

Unlike entrepreneurs, who start a business from scratch, franchisees are given a running start – a proven product/service with the template, the processes, and perhaps some existing customers or hot leads that will result in business. And another big difference from starting a business on your own, Bacha stresses, is the continuing corporate support and the growing relationships with other franchisees.

“Over the last few years, I’ve built relationships with other franchisees, and it’s nice when there’s a whole community of people that have the same interest that you do,” Bacha says.

“There are incredible resources to pull from and help each other. You celebrate the milestones and victories together, but you also lift each other up when things go wrong.

“To be where we are now if we had started out the business on our own, it would have probably taken us another five years at least.”

Another rewarding part of being a franchisee, Bacha notes, is making it a family business.

His dad, Bob, and sister, Amy Dimarco, are team members. Bob takes care of the company vehicles and prepares the equipment for each day, and Amy handles some customer service duties.

“It’s been a great experience from a personal and business standpoint,” Bacha says. “Being my own boss, having a great partner, having my family and best friends involved, helping families, I couldn’t ask for more.”

Discomfort – And Results When companies struggle, whether because of a bad economy, poor decisions, or other factors, top management’s reaction is often to become tight-lipped about the turbulent situation.

Employees are shut out from strategy discussions, and any ideas they might have for fixing the problem go unheard.

But in many if not most cases, such secretiveness is the wrong approach and can even make things worse, says Joe Ferreira (www.joeferreira.com), the ForbesBooks author of Uncomfortable Inclusion: How to Build a Culture of High Performance in Life and Work.

“For organizations with tens of thousands of employees, it might make sense to limit who participates in strategy,” says Ferreira, who is CEO and president of the Nevada Donor Network. “But for smaller organizations, where every person contributes to a thriving culture and facilitates effective operations, there’s a lot of value in involving everyone.”

As his book title suggests, Ferreira calls this all-inclusive way of dealing with things “uncomfortable inclusion.” He put this philosophy into action when he came to the Nevada Donor Network in 2012 at a time when the organization was dysfunctional and on the verge of losing its membership in the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing. That would have shut down the organization for good. Over time, with a few fits and starts along the way, the organization rose from floundering to soaring as a current world leader in the industry.

Ferreira acknowledges that uncomfortable inclusion is an approach that can be messy and difficult, but also says that involving the entire organization in strategy and problem solving can “reinforce synergy, cooperation, and unity while cultivating better ideas and innovation.”

And that’s true whether uncomfortable inclusion is put into action at a failing company, or simply activated at a place where leaders believe their teams and organization could be performing better, he says.

“It is critical to include everyone because ultimately the frontline staff knows best what their environment is going to look like tomorrow and likely a few years down the line, and they are best positioned to be innovators,” Ferreira says. “Why wouldn’t we have them as part of the planning process?”

He says some of the traits needed to embrace this inclusion approach include: Transparent. This one may be especially important because Gallup reports that millennials especially say they want leaders who are open and transparent. Uncomfortable inclusion means being transparent to the point of discomfort, Ferreira says. If it is not uncomfortable, you are not being inclusive enough.

“When you’re transparent with team members and include them in decision-making, you create a network of stakeholders who participate even in small decisions,” he says. “When it comes time to make more impactful decisions, a leader can tap into that banked brain trust to make the best decision possible based on feedback from a proven set of deciders.” Ferreira suggests even taking transparency a step further by including your critics, something he did when he took over at Nevada Donor Network. “In my view, our critics and antagonists are the most important catalysts for growth and innovation,” he says.

Accountable. People within an organization need to be accountable for their actions and to each other. “I talk about how we’re serious about our values, and we hold people accountable,” Ferreira says. “It isn’t enough to be technically competent. Each member of our organization, regardless of title, role, or results, must adhere to our values. We maintain our commitment to quality and excellence, and we are supremely, publicly accountable when we fail.”

Committed. Adopting a more inclusive approach requires commitment, possibly a commitment to changing the organization’s very culture. But the goal may be more attainable than it first seems, Ferreira says. “Achieving success in a seemingly hopeless situation requires hard work and a committed mindset, but it does not require the reinvention of the wheel,” Ferreira says. “It does not even require luck. All it requires is willingness and a mind open to learning and implementing actions that can facilitate transformative success.”

“Make no mistake, doing this is messy and hard,” Ferreira says. “It might seem unnecessarily difficult, complicated, and yes, uncomfortable. But keep chipping away and remember this: Success is achievable, even from the bleakest and most dysfunctional starting points.”

In Life, There Are Only Small Victories - By Glenn Ignazio

The first time I saw the US Navy’s Blue Angels, I was just four years old. I watched in awe as they soared above my head, glistening in the sun, and roaring so loudly that I had to cover my ears with my hands. It was in these moments that I realized my dream to become a pilot one day. I truly felt called to the cockpit.

Anyone who knows me knows that it was the one thing I was sure of growing up —and I managed to turn that dream into reality.

That dream became reality when I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the ripe age of 18. My parents were proud, and I was ready. For twentytwo years I served our great nation as a Special Operations and Combat Rescue Pilot, until one fateful day when I suffered from decompression sickness in an altitude chamber- the same altitude chamber that we trained in almost every day. My life’s dream came to a screeching

halt and my military career ended (literally) overnight. It turned my life upside down.

Decompression sickness refers to injuries caused by a rapid change in the pressure around you. What a metaphor.

While flying high, small nitrogen bubbles left my bloodstream and got caught in the nerves in my brain, spinal cord, and major joints of my body. This caused lesions to form in my spinal cord and brain. It had a huge neurological impact on me, weakening the left side of my body while causing me to lose some peripheral vision.

My life was forever changed.

I went from practically living in the cockpit to being evicted without notice in just a short number of hours. After the accident, I had to have my left hip and part of my femur replaced, so the left side of my body consists of more metal than I ever expected it to.

After losing my ability to fly, work, and even walk, I was challenged to start from ground zero. It was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. When faced with the challenges of navigating a new body and virtually a new life, I had to find ways to keep my momentum going and keep myself working towards the goal of getting back to a semblance of normalcy. In those moments, instead of laying out what the rest of my life was going to look like, I started with small goals. The first of which was being able to walk again. That goal was broken down into multiple achievable steps that I would eventually accomplish– starting with the assistance of a walker, graduating to a cane, and finally to walking on my own again. These small steps helped me to wake up with a goal every single morning and work hard to reach that goal, ultimately leading me to be able to walk on my own again.

Whatever challenge you may be going through right now, I want to stress the importance of small victories– setting small things in front of you that you may do every day but make you feel like you are achieving something. Instead of taking a giant leap towards a goal, take small, achievable steps that will get you to your end goal quicker and easier.

The challenge I had to overcome was learning how to walk again, but your challenge may be different. Are you struggling with depression?

For you, even getting out of bed may be an objective. Celebrate that. Your next step may be to simply make yourself breakfast in the morning, or step outside and water the flowers.

Those achievements should be celebrated too!

The challenge you are facing may not look like mine, but I believe your personal experience is valid and your end goal can be achieved through small victories.

More often than not, I have come to realize that many people give their problems a life they do not deserve. Their problems are real, but they do not need to be focused on at the moment. Instead of focusing on the things

you need to worry about in the future, focus on what is happening in your life right now. If you do not have to worry about a problem until Thursday, what are you doing worrying about it on Monday? If you want to give something life, give the good things life. What are you thankful for today? How can you show yourself love and care today?

Small victories can change your day but focusing on them can also change the trajectory of your entire life. Set achievable goals for yourself that you can reach throughout your day, and then continue on the next day and the day after that. Life is a blessing, but with all the good aspects come a lot of difficulties that can tear you down and knock you off track.

If you can pick yourself up and work towards something, even something that seems so minuscule, you are getting closer to your end goal of making it out.

I believe in you. No matter what you are facing in your life right now, no matter what keeps you up at night and consumes your mind with worry, do not let it take over your life. Focus on the good, achieve small victories, and ask for help if you need it. You are going to be okay.

Seven individuals in custody at the Cook County Jail competed this morning in an online international chess tournament against individuals in custody in Armenia, Spain and Russia, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

The tournament began 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks from Sheriff Dart, FIDE President, Arkady Dvorkovich, and 12th World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov. After a six-match, round robin competition, Russia was declared the victor with a total of three match wins.

Cook County, representing the United States, came in second place with two match wins.

“Chess is more than an entertaining past time, the game teaches its players valuable life lessons,” said Sheriff Dart. “It requires these men to practice critical thinking and the consider the risks and rewards of their decisions, which

The Cook County Jail’s chess program started in 2012 and has hosted numerous chess dignitaries over the years, including Karpov. There are currently 14 participants in this program, which meets for an hour each week to practice.

Today’s participants were chosen based on skill, and four of the players previously competed in the 2019 international chess tournament held at the jail.

“The game of chess transcends language and cultural barriers, and even the physical barriers within which these men are playing,” said Sheriff Dart. “These participants may not all speak the same language, but they were able to connect, compete, and enjoy their time together. After the difficult year we have all had, that is incredibly important.”

Emily worked at the Horseshoe Casino as a stationary engineer and had an immense love for animals. She was also an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed vacationing in New Orleans. Emily had the heart of an Angel and the soul of a child. She would immediately win you over with her stunning smile and sparkling blue eyes. Emily was a beautiful young woman. Quite willful, she would never shy from an argument. And quite loving, she would never shy from a hug. Emily’s carefree spirit and love for her family and friends will always be in our memories.

1 in 3 Illinoisans think walking dogs every day should be required Paws & Pandemics: As humans, it’s easy to get caught up in the way in which the coronavirus pandemic has affected our daily lives, forgetting the impact that lockdown has had on our furry friends. Being home for months on end has affected our activity levels as humans, but we sometimes forget that our pets need sufficient exercise too. A proposed law set to pass this year in Germany orders dog owners to walk their pets twice a day for at least one hour in total, based on evidence that many of the country’s 9.4 million dogs are not getting enough exercise. Do Americans feel pet owners need to

take more responsibility for their pets’ health?

Pet product review & tip site, MyPetNeedsThat. com, conducted a survey of 3,000 respondents and found that almost one-third (31%) of Illinoisans think there should be a state law which enforces dog owners to walk them every day, at least once a day, in order to ensure they receive enough exercise (compared to a national average of 28%). If you’re a pet owner, perhaps your pooch was confused about you being home every day during the pandemic, or maybe they started experiencing cabin fever or acting strangely from not being out and about

as usual. Lack of exercise can have severely negative effects on your pet’s health, including restlessness, boredom, frustration; increased risk of weight gain and withdrawments from daily activities.

Broken down across the country, Granite Staters, Vermonters and Mississippians equally felt most strongly about this idea, with 50% agreeing with the idea of this law. In comparison those in Massachusetts felt least strongly with only 9% in agreement.

The poll also found that 43% of people believe dog owners who don’t walk their pets should receive a life ban from owning pets. Moreover, nearly 1 in 5 (15%) respondents think owners that don’t walk their dogs should be subject to criminal law, rather than civil.

More than a third (34%) of Illinois respondents say if they noticed a neighbor who never allowed their dog to exercise, they would report them to authorities. Considering America has a serious pet obesity epidemic, it’s perhaps no wonder people feel strongly about caring correctly for animals and ensuring they live happy,

healthy lives.

Although it may be glamorized, owning a pet requires time, effort and proper dedication to care for them correctly. It’s easy to get caught up in the positive side of adopting a pet and ignore the lifelong commitment to taking care of them, which is perhaps why nearly 1 in 5 (19%) respondents think a law should be introduced limiting people from owning more than 3 dogs.

Finally, it was found that over half (54%) of people think tying up dogs for over an hour should be illegal.

‘Some people underestimate the amount of work required to effectively care for a pet, especially if they are sold on the idea of adopting during the pandemic as a way to have a companion while home more often,’ says Dr Travis McDermott of MyPetNeedsThat.com. ‘Before considering your pet options, it’s important to evaluate your own post-pandemic lifestyle in order to determine if you’re able to provide an animal with sufficient exercise – such as daily walks – and dedicate enough time to them.’
