South Suburban College Celebrates First Class of Barber College Graduates South Suburban College (SSC) celebrated the first graduating class from its Barber College on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Called, the “Final Punch Out,” the ceremony was attended by students, faculty, administrators, SSC President, Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, members of the Board of Trustees, including Chairman Terry R. Wells, as well as Illinois State Representatives Thaddeus Jones (29th District) and William “Will” Davis (30th District). Attendees observed special remarks, various student awards and each of the nine cohort completers log their last punch card, noting 1,500 hours of successful completion. It was a bittersweet moment for everyone involved in pioneering the program. “It was both an overwhelming and terrific experience,” said Lucas Gunby, SSC Barber College Program Coordinator. Once an award-winning barber for television shows like “Empire” and “Chicago Fire,” Gunby now teaches the next generation of barbers at SSC. “One of the things that makes SSC’s program so unique is that you can earn a Barber Technician Certificate or an Associate in Applied Science in barbering degree,” he stated, noting that students may transfer in credits from traditional barbering institutions. “Not only that, but if you’ve never attended classes on a college campus, you can enter this program and get the full student experience.” Eight students were recently awarded certificates from the SSC Barbering Program, many of which have made connections in the field that led to employment opportunities. One student, Shuntai Robinson, earned an AAS degree in barbering. Similar to Gunby, Robinson has an interest in training new students. “I’m looking to expand the knowledge I already received in order to teach others properly. I’m really eager to learn,” she stated. Robinson spoke as the SSC Barber College class valedictorian. She tipped her cap to Gunby and remarked, “He is very knowledgeable about cutting techniques. He can use a comb and clippers without guards. It takes years of experience to get to that level.” Students complete both clinical and theoretical education in

On May 24, 2022, I helped a senior client from Dyer, Indiana. She got a bill for $45 from a local medical firm. She should not have gotten the bill. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement firm to learn if it got the bill from Medicare. It did not. I wrote a letter to the medical firm to ask it to send information to our client’s insurance company so that the bill would be paid. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $45 on Account # 179504CCN for services rendered 02/08/2022. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement plan insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that it received no such claim from Medicare. That is not the fault of the patient – our client.

To fix this problem as fast as possible, please send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB information directly to the secondary insurer at the following address. Thank you for your cooperation. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our senior citizen clients to correct problems with Medicare related insurance bills to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to this agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered at book stores or online.

Special Gifts to Make Dad Smile Father’s Day brings a special opportunity each year to celebrate the dad in your life, whether it’s spent lighting a grill in the backyard, heading to the golf course or simply relaxing at home. Make his day one to remember by enjoying his favorite activities and giving a gift that’ll put a grin on his face. From home chefs and snazzy dressers to outdoorsmen and sports fans, these gifts offer an array of ideas for dads of all kinds, so you can bring a little extra joy to this year’s celebration. Find more Father’s Day gift inspiration at eLivingtoday.com. Special Steaks for a Special Dad Even for the man who has it all, sometimes Father’s Day gifting can be pretty simple. Show Dad some love with the Omaha Steaks Best Father’s Day Gift package that includes mouthwatering favorites like Bacon-Wrapped Filet Mignons, Boneless Pork Chops, Boneless Chicken Breasts, Gourmet Jumbo Franks, PureGround Filet Mignon Burgers, Individual Scalloped Potatoes, decadent Caramel Apple Tartlets and a jar of Omaha Steaks Seasoning. Find more gifting wisdom at OmahaSteaks.com/Dad. Wilderness Must-Haves Determining the type of gear dad needs depends whether he’s camping high in the mountains or just down the road, but if he’s an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys spending nights with nature, there’s no limit to the options that can make his nights in the wilderness just a little more comfortable. From tents and backpacks to lanterns, camp stoves and fireside foldout chairs, the man who seems ready for anything might just need one last piece of equipment.

Golf Bag Goodies If he’s like most golfers, chances are your dad spends a few minutes each round searching for his ball after a wayward tee shot. Save him some precious time on the course with the extra golf balls he needs so he doesn’t have to worry about leaving one (or two or three) in the woods. Even amateur players sometimes prefer a certain ball, so don’t be afraid to sneak to the garage and check his current supply so you can put his favorite brand in your cart. Food from the Fire Quick seared, slow smoked or anything in-between, a true chef-worthy grill can take your dad’s barbecue reputation from backyard novice to neighborhood celebrity. He may already view himself as master of the meats, but a new charcoal or propane grill can give him the motivation he needs to try new recipes and cook up classics. It’s a gift he can enjoy while bringing the entire family together to celebrate savory success. Perfect for His Pocket Just before heading out the door, there’s one last “checklist” for many dads: phone, wallet, keys, pocketknife. The next time he goes through the classic pocket check, give your dad an upgrade he can smile about with a knife he can use for a variety of situations on a daily basis. For a reminder of home every time he opens the blade, consider a customized option engraved with a loving message so he’ll never forget your thoughtful gift. A Wardrobe Upgrade Whether your dad has style or just thinks he does, you can give his wardrobe the finishing touch it needs with a watch to match the look that’s all his own. From casual styles that complement most of his clothes to traditional timepieces suited for special occasions, there are options in virtually every price range to help the final piece of his outfit make a statement. In the office, on the road or right at home, he’ll be reminded of you every time he checks his wrist.

JOSH BOOTSMA The deadliest school shooting in ten years happened last week. If you’re like me, you’ve read more details about it than you ever cared to know. In the immediate calls from both sides of the aisle to do something in response to the tragedy, I just feel heavy. I don’t know the answer to gun violence, which has increased in recent years. I don’t know what God is teaching us through the gruesome death of elementary schoolers. There’s only one thing that’s consoling in this situation: though I don’t know the answers to my questions, I do know who God is. Think of your best friend. If your best friend approaches you and asks for your car keys, you’re going to toss them over, no questions asked. Why? You toss your keys not because you know exactly what your friend is going to do with your car, but because you know who your friend is. You know that even though you might not understand why they need the car, you trust them to take care of it, because you know and love them so deeply. If there is any time to toss the keys of our lives and understanding to the Lord, it’s now. God’s driving the car of our reality in this world, and I won’t lie, it really seems like he’s chosen some rough, bumpy roads. Sometimes it feels like we’re heading towards a cliff. But it’s not your or my job to drive this car. Because even though we don’t know where we’re going, we do know who our driver is. He’s the Lord. He cares. He sees. He knows. He loves. Exodus 34.6-7: “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty…” Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

THE MINTON TWINS VISIT CRETE’S CONE COTTAGE WITH SYDNEY LEIGH: With the long winter behind them, the twins plus Baby Sydney Leigh Minton Barry decided to visit the Cone Cottage, a popular favorite last Thursday. Sydney enjoyed being outdoors with her Mom Christina Marie and Auntie Alex Rennee for some summerlike refreshment. Needless to say, the Tot charmed all who came into her orbit! ***

A REMINDER FROM MUNSTER CHURCH: About the holiday we celebrate this weekend--Memorial Day, (formerly called Decoration Day) when we remember the fallen soldiers from our World Wars. Lets never forget their sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. God Bless our Fallen Soldiers. ***

VETERANS REMEMBERING MILITARY SERVICE AT THE SHED IN CHICAGO: Disabled Veteran Eddy Majewski, is surrounded by his veteran friends as they observe Memorial Day. Also pictured is Larry Kutz, President of the Southeast Side Vietnan Veterans and Tony Rebeles, Treasurer. The veterans gathered to “remember when” and swap war stories! *** PRAYERS FOR THE USA VETERANS ON MEMORIAL DAY 2022: A long ago memory of this reporter--going to the cemetery with my parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles on Memorial Day and caring for the graves of the veteran members of our families with flags and flowers. And prayers that our country stays strong and out of any more wars and prayers for the people of Ukraine that they prevail! ***

VETERANS AT THE SALUTE DURING THE CEREMONY HONORING FALLEN SOLDIERS: Veterans salute the fallen soldiers during a memorial at the “Soldiers Wall,” 92nd and Brandon in South Chicago. Members of various American Legions, VFW and Amvets meet at the wall each Memorial Day to pay tribute to and remember those veterans who lost their lives in previous Wars. ***

IN MEMORY OF SPENCER LEIGH MINTON: A Veteran of the Gulf War, who lost his battle with life on March 17, 2021. He leaves behind his four daughters, Alex, Tina, Julie and Jennifer and grandbaby Sydney Leigh Minton Barry. Spencer was a proud member of the US ARMY and served his country and his family well. May Spencer Rest in Peace. ***

CONGRATULATIONS TO FR. STEVE KOSINSKI ON 40 YEARS OF PRIESTHOOD: Father Steve, pictured here with Mary Ann Drosos at his gala dinner Saturday May21, 2022 at the Salvadorian Hall in Merrillville, Indiana. Fr. presided at Mass in Polish and English at 2 pm and the all Polish dinner to follow. Father Steve was joined by his many friends from the various parishes he served at over the course of the 40 years he was a priest, from All Saints Church in Hammond to his more recent post in Cleveland. Fr. Steve was a welcome visitor to Amvets in Burnham, Steves in Hegewisch, the Southeast Vietnam Veteran events in and around the Region. He has a zany sense and keeps everyone in his orbit amused. Congratulations Fr Steve Kosinski for 40 years in the service of the Catholic Church! ***

BNI senior’s hard work pays off with full scholarship to Purdue Bishop Noll senior Kayode Olaoye set big college goals for himself, and he began turning them into a reality at a young age. Thanks to his foresight and dedication, and inspiration from his siblings, he will head to Purdue University in West Lafayette this fall with a full scholarship. When Olaoye, who plans to study biomedical engineering, set his sights on earning the prestigious Evans Scholarship like his sister and brother did before him, he did so knowing that the journey would be difficult but not impossible. “I knew to gain this title I had to make sure I excelled on multiple fronts such as my skill set on the golf course, as well as my academic, home and athletic life,” said Olaoye, of Hammond. The Evans Scholarship is a full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies. A student must caddie for at least three summers at an Evans Scholar-aware golf course, have excellent caddie records, and a high academic standing at his or her school. In summer 2018, Olaoye began his caddie journey at Flossmoor Country Club in Flossmoor, Illinois. He maintained high grades throughout his education and was named a Graduate with Distinction at Bishop Noll his senior year, a title reserved for students who earn at least a 4.0 GPA. At Bishop Noll, Olaoye was on the soccer and track teams all four years, and joined the golf team his junior year. Bishop Noll coach David Padilla, who coached him the past two years, said he was a great addition to the team. “Kayode always has a positive outlook whether we win or lose. He is always encouraging his teammates when they are having a bad round of golf,” Padilla said. “It’s been a pleasure coaching and getting to know Kayode. He has a great personality and a positive attitude that will lead to a successful career.” Olaoye also served as a school Student Ambassador and was a member of the Black Student Union, Speech team, National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society in addition to serving as a religious retreat leader his senior year. “Being granted the title Evan Scholar, as well as a full ride scholarship, has blessed me and my family with new opportunities and burdens relieved,” he said. “It’s an honor to have this chance just as my older brother and sister have. I also have a younger brother who will be starting his caddie journey this summer, and as he finishes he will begin his freshman year at Bishop Noll. I’m thankful that I now have the opportunity, tools and ability to guide him on this journey just as my older siblings have guided me.” His sister, Anyah Akanni, received the Evans Scholarship in 2015 and attended Northwest-

Bishop Noll senior Kayode Olaoye has been named an Evans Scholar and will attend Purdue University on a full scholarship. _________________________ ern University, graduating in 2019. His brother Michael Akanni, Bishop Noll Class of 2019, received the scholarship in 2019 and currently attends Kansas University, said Olaoye. Now in its 101st school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education, including the highest graduation rate (99%) of any high school in Lake County over the past six years. In addition, Noll’s 95 graduates of the Class of 2021 received $8.1 million in college scholarship offers. Noll is part of the Diocese of Gary, offering a discount to Diocesan families, and participates in the Indiana School Choice program. Visit bishopnoll.org for more information on enrollment. The Evans Scholarship is valued at more than $120,000 over four years. The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Glenview, Illinois, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. Currently, a record 1,070 caddies are enrolled at 21 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 11,500 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. “These young students have each shown excellence in the classroom, in their communities and on the golf course,” said WGA President and CEO John Kaczkowski in a press release. Each caddie has a story that reflects the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

Mrvan Testimony Before Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee Today, Congressman Frank J. Mrvan testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development during their Member Day Hearing. A video of his testimony is available here and the text of the full statement as prepared for delivery is below. I would like to thank Chairwoman Kaptur and Ranking Member Simpson for holding today’s Member Day hearing. I appreciate the opportunity to engage with all members of this Subcommittee and advocate for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects that are essential to strengthening the economy of Northwest Indiana, the entire Midwest, and our nation. I have the great honor and privilege of representing Indiana’s First Congressional District. Our district serves as a center of vital road, rail, air, and port networks in the Great Lakes region and is home to major manufacturing industries. This infrastructure – in conjunction with our labor workforce and proximity to Chicago – enables our region to attract new commercial and residential interests and talent. Northwest Indiana is proud to have the largest concentration of steel production and the largest inland oil refinery in our country. These industries foster economic activity and provide good-paying, union jobs to thousands of workers in this district. From maintaining the federal navigation depths of our commercial and recreational harbors to ensuring Northwest Indiana residents have clean drinking water, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Chicago District stands steadfast as an unparalleled federal partner in the effort to facilitate economic development and to promote environmental stewardship in Northwest Indiana. There is no doubt the projects under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers serve as an economic driver in Indiana’s First Congressional District, and I am grateful for their missions in our region. The Community Project Funding process demonstrates the constitutional prerogatives of the Legislative Branch, and I fully appreciate the attention this Subcommittee and its staff devote to reviewing Members’ requests. It is important that we are provided the opportunity to exercise our constitutional authority to direct funding to our districts, and it is incumbent for us to submit project requests that are beyond reproach and focused on the criteria set forth by this Subcommittee. For the First District of Indiana, I have asked this Subcommittee to appropriate $10 million in Community Project Funding to the Corps’ Construction account for the specific purpose of undertaking Environmental Infrastructure projects in the Calumet Region. I would note that the requested amount is equal to the Chicago District’s demonstrated capability for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023. Authorized by Section 219 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1992 and subsequent laws, Environmental Infrastructure projects continue to have a transformational impact in my district, aiding local communities in making necessary, overdue improvements to water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater sewer infrastructure that directly impact the Great Lakes system. These projects also serve in a primarily industrial corridor in majority minority populations that are dealing with the legacy costs that are so common in the Midwest. These projects are indeed environmental, but I believe the investments have proven to attract capital and built an excitement and interest to attract new people and businesses to my district. With respect to the appropriate transparency measures that this Subcommittee has put in place, I would emphasize for the Calumet Region Environmental Infrastructure that the evidence of local community support is overwhelming, with local sponsors consistently contributing 25 percent of their projects’ costs. These projects provide a vital benefit to residents in our district and attract new economic activity to our region. In partnership with the Chicago District, this cost-sharing approach serves as

a model of federal-local cooperation and consistently delivers a strong track-record of proven results, included, but not limited to: sanitary sewer interceptors and lines that benefit residents by reducing backups and damages to homes; improved operations of local wastewater treatment facilities by eliminating inflow and infiltration of groundwater into sewer systems; and stormwater projects constructed in areas where no previous stormwater infrastructure existed to protect homeowners from costly flooding events. It is imperative that we build on such models of cooperation and continue to appropriately distribute federal assistance through the annual appropriations process to communities that are depending on our leadership. Additionally, I have requested $1 million and $914,000 in Community Project Funding to support the Corps’ operations and maintenance missions at the Michigan City Harbor and at the Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor, in Portage, respectively. Given the First District’s location along the south shore of Lake Michigan, recreational harbors have an integral role in the economic development plans for shoreline communities. Michigan City Harbor features prominently within the Washington Park complex that is home to the Michigan City Zoo and the city’s publicly accessible lakefront, a 99-acre park that attracts visitors from the tri-state area. As important, Michigan City Harbor and its channel provide safe refuge for recreational boats traveling within southern Lake Michigan during adverse weather events. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) maintains law enforcement and rescue vessels within the port; improving the navigable waterway within the harbor and channel will improve the USCG’s access to and from the port to conduct its Homeland Security missions on Lake Michigan. Similarly, Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor supports economic development within the City of Portage driven by its proximity to Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes National Park. The availability of this harbor allows the city to pursue commercial and recreational plans that tie into the waterway and the natural environment. Along with Michigan City Harbor, Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor and its channel provide safe refuge for recreational boats traveling within southern Lake Michigan during adverse weather events as nearby commercial harbors such as Burns Waterway Harbor, Gary Harbor and Indiana Harbor do not have facilities for the protection of recreational boats during intense thunderstorms or other weather conditions that affect navigability within Lake Michigan. To the immediate south of both harbors, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District is constructing its Double Track project, a $649 million project with substantial investments made by the federal and state governments. The transit-oriented development along this rail line, which connects Portage and Michigan City, focuses upon the accessibility to Lake Michigan via multiple methods of transportation, including waterways. Requested funds will allow the Chicago District to address the needs of the Michigan City and Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbors within its authorized missions and will support Portage and Michigan City in their efforts to maximize economic development opportunities attracted to this region resulting from these federal investments. In closing, Chairwoman Kaptur, Ranking Member Simpson, and all members of this Subcommittee, I thank you for your consideration and for the opportunity to share with you the importance of these worthwhile projects to Northwest Indiana. The work of this Subcommittee, and that of the House Appropriations Committee, leads to federal investments that have the power to transform the economies of local communities and improve the quality of life and place for those who entrust in us the responsibilities inherent of Members of Congress as we work in a collaborative and productive manner on behalf of all the American people.

Manage Heart Health for Stronger Brain Health The same risk factors that contribute to making heart disease the leading cause of death worldwide also impact the rising global prevalence of brain disease, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The global death rate from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is increasing even more than the rate of heart disease death, according to the American Heart Association’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2022 Update. Globally, more than 54 million people had Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in 2020, a 37% increase since 2010 and 144% increase over the past 30 years (1990-2020). Additionally, more than 1.89 million deaths were attributed to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias worldwide in 2020, compared to nearly 9 million deaths from heart disease. “The global rate of brain disease is quickly outpacing heart disease,” said Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D. M.S., FAHA, the past president of the American Heart Association (2020-21), a professor of neurology and epidemiology at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and attending neurologist at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “We are learning more about how some types of dementia are related to aging, and how some types are due to poor vascular health. It’s becoming more evident that reducing vascular disease risk factors can make a real difference in helping people live longer, healthier lives, free of heart disease and brain disease.” According to the statistics update, people with midlife hypertension were five times more likely to experience impairment on global cognition and about twice as likely to experience reduced executive function, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The risk

for dementia associated with heart failure was nearly two-fold. Experts recommend maintaining a healthy weight, managing your blood pressure and following other heart-healthy lifestyle behaviors that can also support good brain health while studies show maintaining good vascular health is associated with healthy aging and retained cognitive function. Optimal brain health includes the ability to perform tasks like movement, perception, learning and memory, communication, problem solving, judgment, decision making and emotion. Cognitive decline and dementia are often seen following stroke or cerebrovascular disease and indicate a decline in brain health. Consider these steps to live a healthier lifestyle and protect your heart and brain health: * Don’t smoke; avoid secondhand smoke. * Reach and maintain a healthy weight. Be mindful of your eating habits; eat foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and added sugars. * Be physically active. Start slowly and build up to at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (such as brisk walking) each week. As an alternative, you can do 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of the two, to improve overall cardiovascular health. * Get your blood pressure checked regularly and work with your health care team to manage it if it’s high. * Have regular medical checkups and take your medicine as directed. * Decrease your stress level and seek emotional support when needed. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I have a few questions about selling my home. I have an agent already, but I’m dealing with him long distance. There’s a potential buyer already who I was told wants the house but has some minor details about paying off bills before he would be qualified. Does this constitute a “qualified” buyer? Answer: Whether local or long distance, the broker works for you. The questions you have should be answered by the salesperson. If the salesperson cannot or will not answer these questions to your satisfaction, then speak with the supervising broker. If necessary, ask to work with someone else. A buyer is not qualified until he gets a preapproval or at least a prequalification letter from a lender. So, your potential buyer has not been qualified by a lender. If the buyer is unable to get financing, then any interest in the property is worthless. However, it’s often possible to clean up bills and negative items on a credit report and thus become a ready, willing and able buyer -- the type of buyer that deserves your attention. Keep in mind that a buyer with a preapproval is a much stronger buyer than one who just has a prequalification. In this sellers’ market, buyers should get themselves preap-

proved with a reputable lender or lender that has been recommended by a Realtor. Preapproved buyers need to know that they have a better chance of having their offer accepted, over a buyer with just a preliminary prequalification. But there are also other aspects of a person’s loan that needs to be looked at. Talk to your salesperson about this. How serious can a buyer be if they haven’t even taken the steps to get themselves prequalified to see if they can afford the payment on a particular home? Remember a house payment is more than just principal and interest, it’s taxes, insurance and one item that many people forget about…….lots of maintenance! Remember, a letter from a lender does not guarantee that financing will go through, but it’s a good start. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? Agent or No Agent MIKE BUDER Some buyers and sellers wonder whether they can save money by not using a Realtor for their home sale and/or purchase. I will do my best to explain the variables for different types of transactions. SELLING A HOME, you will probably be best served to hire a Realtor to list it for you and to represent your interests throughout the transaction. This is known as a “fiduciary responsibility”, and Realtors must abide by a code of ethics which means we are working for you alone, not our own interests or those of the buyer. Realtors must treat everyone fairly, but for negotiations it is very helpful to be represented by a professional. This also applies to exposure for your home. More than 80% of homes sell in the MLS. It will behoove you to have a full-service agent who can help with pricing, photography, staging, marketing, negotiations, inspections (which sometimes lead to additional negotiations), and the closing process itself. If you try to go it alone, the statistics show that “For Sale by Owner” homes eventually end up listing with a realtor around 85% of the time. BUYING A RESALE HOME, you could go directly to the listing agent in an attempt to get them to discount services because you have no agent helping you. They however

are under no obligation to give you any of their commission. Additionally, since the listing agent is representing the seller, they are on the other team and working against you with regard to the sale price and repair negotiations, so it could end up costing you more. BUYING NEW CONSTRUCTION, builder pricing normally includes agent commissions. Reputable builders will not discount or undercut Realtors because they bring them a lion’s share of their business. So the bottom line is that although it is possible, you probably won’t save money if you choose not to hire an agent. This is beside the additional time spent and stress involved. You would not go into court without a lawyer or do your own surgery without a doctor…allow a professional to handle your real estate needs. Realtors do this stuff every day! 5 Healthy Habits to Help Reduce Stress Between work, family obligations and a constantly changing world, people in the United States are stressed. In fact, U.S. workers are among the most stressed in the world, according to a State of the Global Workplace study. While some stress is unavoidable and can be good for you, constant or chronic stress can have real consequences for your mental and physical health. Chronic stress can increase your lifetime risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also lead to unhealthy habits like overeating, physical inactivity and smoking while also increasing risk factors, including high blood pressure, depression and anxiety. However, a scientific statement from the American Heart Association shows reducing stress and cultivating a positive mindset can improve health and well-being. To help people understand the connection between stress and physical health, the American Heart Association offers these science-backed insights to help reduce chronic stress. Stay Active Exercise is one of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy and release stress. Physical activity is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression. It can also help increase energy and improve quality of sleep. The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or a combination. Meditate Incorporate meditation and mindfulness practices into your day to give yourself a few minutes to create some distance from daily stress. Some studies show meditation can reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, support the immune system and increase your ability to process information. Practice Positivity A positive mindset can improve overall health. Studies show a positive mindset can help you live longer, and happy individuals tend to sleep better, exercise more, eat better and not smoke. Practice positive self-talk to help you stay calm. Instead of saying, “everything is going wrong,” re-frame the situation and remind yourself “I can handle this if I take it one step at a time.”

Show Gratitude Gratitude - or thankfulness - is a powerful tool that can reduce levels of depression and anxiety and improve sleep. Start by simply writing down three things you’re grateful for each day. Find a Furry Friend Having a pet may help you get more fit; lower stress, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar; and boost overall happiness and well-being. When you see, touch, hear or talk to companion animals, you may feel a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing and happiness. At the same time, stress hormones are suppressed. Dog ownership is also associated with a lower risk of depression, according to research published by the American Heart Association. Find more stress-management tips at Heart. org/stress. Stress 101 Understanding stress is an important step in managing and reducing it. Consider these things to know about stress and how it could affect your life: * Today, 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. report being worried or depressed. * Higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol are linked to increased risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular events like heart disease and stroke. * The top sources of stress are money, work, family responsibilities and health concerns. * Work-related stress is associated with a 40% increased risk of cardiovascular disease like heart attack and stroke.

So far, 2022 has not been a good year for investors. In fact, we’re moving into bear market territory. What should you know about bear markets? And how should you respond? To begin with, a bear market occurs when a stock market index, such as the S&P 500, falls at least 20% from its most recent high point. You might think this type of drop is rare, but that’s not actually the case. Historically, bear markets have occurred every few years and are a normal feature of the investment landscape. We experienced a bear market fairly recently, from mid-February 2020 through late March of that same year. What causes bear markets? Each one is different, but the current one is largely the result of several factors, including high inflation, rising interest rates, the war in Ukraine and global supply chain problems. When will the financial markets again start moving in a positive direction? No one can say for sure, but in any case, it’s not really a good idea to make investment decisions based on what may happen next in the financial markets. Instead, consider these moves: Be patient. It can be challenging to look at your investment statements during these days. But you’ll help yourself by taking a long-term view. Consider this: From March 2009 until the end of 2021, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained more than 460%. So, if you’ve been investing for a while, compare where you are now to where you were 10 or 12 years ago. You’ve probably made pretty good progress over this time – and 10 years from now, the current downturn may not look like such a big event, either. Review your risk tolerance. If you’re having a hard time coping with investment losses

– even if they’re just “paper losses” for now – you may want to review your tolerance for risk and see if it’s still the same as it was when you began investing. Even without a bear market, people’s risk tolerance can change, especially as they approach retirement. Review your goals. A bear market is not meaningless, but by itself, it shouldn’t cause you to change your long-term goals. And if your goals haven’t changed, neither should your investment strategy. Look for buying opportunities. During a down market, you can find quality investments at attractive prices. So, you could take this opportunity to fill gaps in your portfolio or add shares of investments that you already own and that you believe have good prospects for growth. Get some help. When trying to navigate a lengthy market downturn, it can be useful to get some support and guidance. Consider this: Among investors who work with a financial advisor, 84% said that doing so gave them a greater sense of comfort about their finances during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey conducted in 2020 by Age Wave and Edward Jones. And getting professional help may provide the same type of reassurance during the current market turmoil. A bear market is never enjoyable. But taking the long view and making moves appropriate for your needs can help you get through this period and look ahead to better days. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Patrick Zamkin 18735 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL 60430, (708) 798-9066. Edward Jones. Member SIPC.
