Tip #3: Build mastery Find an activity that you enjoy and work toward building mastery. This will not only encourage you to find a group of people with similar interests, but it will also build your sense of worth within yourself and within the group.

Start by sampling some things that you have a smidgeon of interest in and explore them. If it is a sport, commit to the season. If it is a new hobby or club, give it at least 3 months of your time. Building mastery is a great way to solidify your confidence.

Financial Tips for the Self-Employed SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Being self-employed has some benefits: You get to choose your own hours, you don’t have to count “vacation days” and you’ll never worry about getting downsized. On the other hand, you’re truly on your own – there’s no employersponsored retirement plan and no benefits package. So, if you’ve recently started a business or become a “gig worker,” possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, what can you do to get on the road to financial security?

There are several steps you can take, including the following: Establish a budget. When you’re self-employed – and especially when you’re first starting out – you need to keep tight control over where your money is going. So, establish a budget and stick to it.

Open a retirement plan. As a self-employed individual, you can choose a retirement plan, such as a SEP-IRA, a SIMPLE-IRA or an “owner-only” 401(k). When your earnings are limited, you can contribute modest amounts to any of these plans, but when your income rises, you can boost your contributions. While these retirement plans have some things in common, including tax-deferred growth of earnings, they differ in other areas, such as contribution limits, and one plan may be more suitable for you than another, depending on whether you have employees. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine which plan is best for your needs.

Build an emergency fund. When you work for a business or other organization, your income is predictable – but that’s usually not the case when you’re self-employed. And when your earnings are uneven, you can be vulnerable to financial stress when you face an unexpected expense. To help protect yourself from these threats, try to gradually build an emergency fund containing a few months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account.

Pay down your debts. Some debts, such as loans to help your business, may be unavoidable – and even productive.

But other debts, especially those that can’t be deducted from your taxes and carry a high interest rate, are far less useful, so you may want to set up a repayment plan. With your other expenses, you might not be able to whittle these debts down as fast you’d like, but, over time, your efforts can pay off.

Put money aside for taxes. Because no employer is withholding taxes from your paychecks, you will likely have to make quarterly estimated payments. Plus, you’re responsible for all your Social Security taxes, which, if you worked for someone else, would be split between you and your employer. To make sure you’ve got enough money available to pay your taxes, you might want to set up a special account – one that’s not used for any other purpose.

Get proper insurance. Depending on the nature of your work, you may or may not need some type of business insurance, but if you have a family, you should certainly consider the need for life insurance, and you may also want to consider disability insurance.

Self-employment can be quite fulfilling – and you’ll find it even more rewarding when you make the right financial moves.

How could they say it is not a bedroom when we have beds in there and our sons slept there for 13 years? We are furious!

Answer: I understand your frustration. You have a nice home, both parties agreed to the sale price, you made it through the home inspection and everyone is happy. Then the appraiser steps in and ruins this perfect deal.

Although your home obviously has a bedroom in the basement, it does not meet the bedroom criteria that an appraiser uses.

This may vary from state to state, but generally a bedroom is considered a bedroom by an appraiser if it has 2 ways of egress (door and/or window). The bedroom must be at least 70 sq. ft, and it cannot be smaller than 7 ft in any horizontal direction. Sorry, that

2’x35’ room is not a bedroom. The escape window or door must be at least 5.7 sq. ft for an opening.

But guess what? It doesn’t need a closet according to the appraiser!

NOTE: It would be a good idea to put at least an armoire in that bedroom to satisfy your buyer.

The Conclusion: It may look like a bedroom, it may have a bed like a bedroom and you sleep in it like a bedroom, but according to the appraiser, it doesn’t quack like a bedroom.

Only 1 in 3 Illinois parents understand teen slang To parents, it must seem that their offspring speak a different language half the time, especially if they’re online playing games with friends. When it comes to slang and gaming lingo, then they literally do. Messaging each other with acronyms such as TTYL, ROFL or GOAT, teens immediately get what their friends are saying, even if it comes across as a weird, alien terminology (okay, we’ll translate: Talk to You Later; Roll on the Floor Laughing; Greatest of All Time). But how much do parents really understand? Solitaired.com quizzed 3,000 parents to find out, testing their knowledge of general and online gaming phrases…

Perhaps unsurprisingly, they didn’t come out of this well. Almost 1 in 3 (31%) Illinois parents were able to understand the meaning of words like ‘Lit’ [amazing, cool or exciting], ‘Dope [cool or awesome]’, ‘Thirsty’ [trying to get attention], ‘Snatched’ [looking good, perfect or fashionable] or ‘Shook’ [to be shocked or shaken up].

The rest showed themselves up as total ‘Noobs’ [a person who doesn’t know what they’re doing or who is bad at something; in other words, a newbie], frankly.

However, moms can congratulate themselves a bit more; 29% of them knew what most of the terms meant, unlike only 24% of dads. And broken down by state, Alaska parents are the most lit, scoring a dope 66%. They’d probably throw shade [give a dirty look] at parents in Montana, who could only manage a lame 7%.

And when it comes to online games, one of the most interesting results from the survey, given that kids have mostly been off school for the

past year, is how many parents now view their offsprings’ obsession with it as a blessing. 40% of parents have changed their attitudes towards online games since the start of the pandemic, and are seeing it as a positive, rather than something the kids can’t be dragged away from.

Parents have been crediting online games as providing them with the opportunity to get precious time to do their jobs, prepare meals, and even get some quiet time away from the rest of the family. And they have, on average, allowed their kids to spend roughly 41% more time online than before the pandemic. Their views of the benefits include that it’s a boost to their kids’ reading skills (9% of parents agreed); good for visual-spatial skills (9%); good for problem-solving (38%); provides good social connections for those playing against friend or those with similar interests (16%); that it’s good for creativity (16%); and an optimistic 13% feel it could turn into a career.

Over half of parents (56%) admit that lockdowns would have been harder without their kids having access to online games. But that aside, it’s nice to hear that 55% of parents say they’ve bonded more with their children since the start of the pandemic.

‘It’s something that would have been totally unexpected in pre-pandemic times: parents now view online games in an overwhelmingly positive way’ says says Neal Taparia from Solitaired.com. ‘Rather than have to drag kids away from laptops and consoles, they now appear to recognize online gaming’s overwhelmingly positive attributes.’

SAVED CEDAR LAKE FAMILY OVER $2,000 WOODROW WILCOX On February 11 and 12 of 2021, protected the surviving family of our deceased client over $2,000. On February 11, I investigated the bill. On February 12, I wrote a letter scolding the firm that sent the wrongful bill.

This is what I do every day to protect our senior citizen clients from mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. I wish more people would learn how to help seniors to correct wrongful Medicare related medical bills. The insurance agency where I work hired me to protect its clients from wrongful bills to demonstrate that the owners and staff really do care about our clients. It is an extra service that the agency is not legally required to give clients. Our clients seem to appreciate my work.

Following is the letter that I sent to protect the Cedar Lake family with some editing to protect our client’s privacy.

Dear Representative, The family of our deceased client brought a bill from your firm to our firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $2,114.69 on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on three different dates in December 2020. The date of the statement is 01/29/2021.

I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this bill. It reported that your bill to our client is FALSE. Here is why.

All the proper balances on the bill (i.e., $10.11, $19.05, $5.51, and $7.64) were

paid by our client’s secondary insurer on 01/05/2021 in a bulk check for $149.86 via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) with transaction confirmation # XXXXXX. In other words, your firm got paid on 01/05/2021 but never bothered to credit our client’s account by the time you sent the bill on 01/29/2021.

Someone at your firm failed to credit that payment to the account of our client. In addition to that, someone at your firm failed to discount the bill for the Medicare adjustment. That is a serious breach of Medicare rules. Your bill to our client is an attempt to wrongfully collect $2,114.69 from our client and her surviving family. I consider that a very serious breach of ethics.

A duplicate Medicare Summary Notice on all these claims has been ordered. That document with the Explanation Of Benefits from the secondary insurer will confirm your failure to account for payments from Medicare and adjust the bill according to Medicare’s ruling for the claim adjustment.

Please, do the honest thing and correct your errors. If you believe anything that I have alleged in this letter is untrue, explain your position in writing.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by correcting false medical bills. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available online and at many booksellers.

All we need to do is hold steady to God as He “takes hold” of our hand and our life. “Do not fear.” He will help. We stress when we

feel alone and helpless. Then our helplessness creates hopelessness. We have never been promised a life without problems and challenges, but we have been assured that God would never leave us nor forsake us.

We are assured that with God all things are possible; therefore, we do not need to lose hope.

During those challenging moments of life, I want to encourage you to hold steady. Maintain emotional groundedness, stay firm in your determination, remain consistent and unwavering in the knowledge that God is with you always. He will help you and He will bring you out of whatever situation you are facing. Hold steady to the fact that He knows how much you can bear and that He has already prepared a way of escape for you. You are more than a conqueror and God is always concerned about the things that concern you. Hold Steady and watch God work!

Full Time Supervisor of Facility Maintenance Essential Function: Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Recreational Services, the Supervisor of Facility Maintenance is responsible for independently conducting the day to day operational management and implementation of all assignments pertaining to maintenance, housekeeping and overall cleaning for the Department of Recreational Services. This position involves the supervision, education and training of maintenance staff on proper maintenance and cleaning procedures. A successful candidate has the ability to initiate, plan and implement all necessary routine maintenance services, daily work lists and checklists to ensure that maintenance goals are being accomplished. This position requires developing an annual maintenance plan and budget as well as the responsibility to maintain all appropriate records, agreements, contracts, proposals, reports, and expense summaries. An ideal candidate is involved with assisting and delegating staff needed as support for recreational activities and special events. The maintenance division includes the maintenance of the aquatic center, therefor a successful candidate must be able to coordinate maintenance of pool and whirlpool including cleaning, temperature checks, and water chemistry testing as well as supervise full time and part time maintenance staff including, staff meetings, hiring, scheduling, work duty lists, and time sheets.

A successful candidate must assist in moving the Village forward through modeling behavior that is consistent with our Good to Great leadership philosophy, and the overall mission and vision as public servants. They must have the ability to interact effectively with the public, department leadership, fellow employees and village officials; preserve the integrity of our organization by making decisions that are in the best interests of the organization; and perform all job duties in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Village of South Holland with high ethical standards and behaviors.

Minimum Qualifications: A minimum Associates degree in a related field from an accredited college preferred. A minimum of three to five years working in a maintenance field as well as a minimum of three to five years of management experience required. Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), or Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO) preferred, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Basic working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry preferred.

MIKE BUDER Some of today’s buyers are now using escalation clause riders in their offers in order to catch the seller’s attention. With an escalation clause the buyer is willing to raise their current offer at some amount more than the next highest offer. So, for example if a house is listed at $200,000 and the buyer wants to offer more than $200,000 in order to beat out the other buyers, the buyer can offer $200,000 as their initial offer and escalate that amount by $500 or $1,000 more than the next highest offer. Generally, an escalation clause should have an upper limit which means the buyer is willing to raise their offer up to a certain amount and then after that they are not interested. In the case of the $200,000 buyer offer they are willing to raise their offer by $1,000 over the next highest offer but no higher than $225,000 then the escalation clause is stopped out.

A properly written escalation clause should also require written proof of the next highest offer so that the buyer knows there is indeed a legitimate offer that raised their offer price.
