Illinoisans plan on vacationing locally this summer While we’re all eager to leave our homes and get outdoors in nature again this summer, there’s no denying the financial constraints some people are still facing due to the pandemic. With a road trip requiring far cheaper travel costs than an airplane ticket, as well as providing a boost to local tourism, could the solution be… A summer staycation?

Conducted by OnePoll and Commissioned by Cooper Tires, the survey of 2,000 respondents found that over 1 in 4 Illinoisans (28%) plan on vacationing within the Prairie State this summer. Moreover, the average respondent said they want to drive no more than 115 miles to get to their destinations, and have an average of three road trips already planned out!

The survey also found that for the first time since the pandemic began, 63% of people will be leaving their homes for more than 2 days

this summer vacation.

Almost two-thirds plan on getting more in touch with Mother Nature this summer – it seems we’ve missed being outdoors after months of lockdown!

This summer, people want to drive to their nearest lake or river (51%) national monument (49%) or state park (47%). At these locations, camping (41%), swimming (40%) and fishing (38%) are among the top summer activities planned.

With the window rolled down to scenic views, a cool breeze through your hair and your favorite song blasting in the background, it’s hard to list the negative aspects of a road trip – especially with good company. This is perhaps why 3 in 5 (62%) of us believe there’s nothing quite like a summer road trip to reach your destination.

RICHARD ZEKVELD These Greeks had come a long way to worship Israel’s God in Jerusalem. They were drawn to him. They were also drawn to someone who looked like him – Jesus. They found Phillip, one of Jesus’ disciples. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21).

The apostle John doesn’t tell us if they met Jesus that day.

After Jesus heard their request, he said, “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself” (John 12:32). He meant he would be lifted up as a horrific, humiliated spectacle, to die on a Roman cross.

Normally, that sight would repulse people, not draw them. But with Jesus, it was different. He died for us. He died for our sins, not his own. “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Ultimately, Rome didn’t put him on the cross. Love did.

Later, Jesus rose from the dead and sent his followers to proclaim the news of his death for us. Christ crucified is ‘lifted up from the earth’ for all to see each time that good news is proclaimed. Through that message of radical, sacrificial love, Jesus draws people from all nations to himself.

Maybe those Greek seekers met Jesus in person that day.

Maybe they met him later in the gospel.

What about you? Have you met Christ crucified in the gospel? Has he drawn you to himself, to trust and treasure him? Read Matthew 26-28 or Mark 14-16 or Luke 22-24 or John 18-21 in the Bible. Ask Jesus to meet you in these readings. Ask him to draw you to him.

1 in 10 Illinois singles would not date a nondrinker When it comes to finding a relationship, there are always obstacles to the path of true love.

Most people have a list - long or short - of deal-breakers; traits that they will not accept, compromise on, or adjust to when it comes to a potential partner. These can include their political orientation, whether they have kids, if they’ve been previously married, if they’re covered in piercings or tattoos, whether they smoke, or, very commonly, drink too much.

But what about the opposite - someone who doesn’t drink at all? Detox.net, an online resource for finding drug and alcohol addiction detox centers, surveyed 3,375 single Americans to find out how many people would not date a teetotaler, or nondrinker, and who couldn’t even fathom being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t share a few drinks with them.

This could, of course, demonstrate how some people come to form a dependence on alcohol within their relationships.

Firstly, the survey made the startling discovery that over 1 in 10 Illinois singles (12%) would NOT date a teetotaler, period (compared to a national average of 14%). However, if given a binary choice between dating a teetotaler, and someone who drinks too much, 12% would opt for the latter. This does change slightly when it comes to gender: 19% of men would definitely date someone who drinks too much compared to just 5% of women.

Nearly 1 in 5 singles (18%) admit they would be disappointed if they discovered on a first date that their date didn’t drink alcohol. This could be due to an element of feeling judged - that the nondrinker had a more moralistic approach and was able to control themselves better than the one who likes a drink or two.

But, the main reason people drink on a date is to potentially boost their confidence; after all, 31% of singles said that dating is definitely harder without alcohol and more than a quarter (29%) say they need a bit of liquid courage before they even go on a date.

When it comes to online filtering, 3 in 4 singles (75%) think nondrinkers should state that they abstain from alcohol on their online dating

profiles so they know in advance whether they are happy to meet up with them, or not. Another potential deal-breaker Detox.net found was that 38% wouldn’t date a potential partner who smokes tobacco or uses other substances.

Finally, a significant 13% of people say they have been in relationships where the only thing they had in common with a partner was drinking. Alcohol dependency can have major effects on romantic relationships in the most destructive ways. Detox.net provides the following advice on how to avoid forming alcohol dependencies within relationships: · Focusing alcohol consumption on romantic interactions and activities can lead to alcohol dependency within the relationship. To avoid alcohol dependency in romantic relationships, couples should participate in intimate activities that are not centered around alcohol consumption, such as date nights and learning new skills together. · Singles should avoid seeking out romantic partners who are overly indulgent when it comes to alcohol consumption. Seeking out partners with healthy drinking habits is very effective in limiting the potential for alcohol dependency in romantic relationships. · Intimate activities within romantic relationships should not be based on alcohol consumption. Singles should opt for dates that are not centered around drinking. This can create a positive and healthy foundation for a potential relationship. · Although having a drink on a date can suppress anxiety and nerves, singles should look for healthy ways to deal with dating anxiety by communicating with their potential partners.

Drinking to pacify one’s anxiety could create an unhealthy pattern in any potential relationship. · Couples should also avoid turning to alcohol when there is conflict within the relationship and should find healthier ways to deal with conflict and frustration. · Counseling is an important tool when dealing with alcohol dependency in relationships, and is a healthier option for couples dealing with this issue.

The NWI Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Chamber Series Concludes with Return of Maestro Kirk Muspratt The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra concludes its Spring Chamber Series with a concert featuring the return of Music Director and Conductor Kirk Muspratt, Friday, June 18 at 7:30pm at the Auditorium at Living Hope Church, 9000 Taft Street, on the Merrillville/ Crown Point border.

This Chamber Orchestra concert will include string, piano, and percussion sections with show-stopping solos from the Symphony’s principal oboist, Jennet Ingle. Take a tour of the world from your seat as the concert features composers from eight different countries, with a mix of folk, dance, ballet, opera, movie and patriotic music.

In-person tickets are $30 per person and virtual tickets are $15.

How to safeguard your mental health in the “New Normal” Tip #1: Before you jump back into ‘what was’ pre-pandemic, take inventory of the things that were working for you during the pandemic.

I like the analogy of the frog in the boiling pot of water. Pre-pandemic many of us were quite ‘comfortable’ living in the discomfort of the boiling water. Once we were taken out of the water we then realized how uncomfortable it actually was. Now, we are often being asked to jump back into the boiling water as if it isn’t boiling.

This is a great time to unpack the things that you may have enjoyed during the pandemic and move in those directions. Perhaps you really liked the freedom of not commuting so you were home for meals with your family.

Evaluate what is important to you, time with loved ones is likely on top of the list. Often our mental health suffers when we continue to live in discomfort. You may experience more depression, anxiety and sleep-related problems. That is why it is important to begin your evaluation of what parts of the ‘new normal’ you absolutely need to protect and what you can leave behind.

Tip #2: Establish healthy habits one micro habit at a time.

For some of us, we have gathered some unhealthy habits during the pandemic. Perhaps hygiene was slipping, or not dressing properly daily or not exercising. More than ever, the time is now to evaluate some of the negative habits we have developed and start replacing them with new, healthier ones. Don’t try to tackle

all habits at once. Instead set a micro goal and master that. Then habit stack positive habits around that micro habit.

Healthy and unhealthy habits play a large role in our mental health. However, habits are tough unless we establish an awareness of what we are doing in the first place. That is why before you start something new, evaluate your day from start to finish and find a time of day that makes sense to you to start something new.

What are some things we should try to look out for when going through this process of creating a “new normal”?

Here are two things to avoid when creating your “new normal”: #1: When starting something new, avoid the pitfalls of perfection.

The idea is to do something new more often than not. However, we tend to do the all-ornothing idea here. If we aren’t perfect, it isn’t worth that sort of thinking. Look to create trends that more often than not, the new habit is completed instead of looking for perfection. #2: Have realistic expectations of yourself.

For instance, if your new goal is to go for a walk every day, think of the time of day that you are at your best and put the walk in there. If you are not a morning person, don’t set your alarm for early dawn to fit it in because you will likely hit the snooze on day 3. Instead, look for the time of day that you could easily fit in the walk and start there instead.

Speaking Of Seniors

HELPED CLIENT COMPLAIN AGAINST DOCTOR WOODROW WILCOX In October 2020, our client had laboratory work done that was ordered by her doctor.

Medicare ruled that the claim filed with Medicare lacked notes to give a medical need for the tests. For that reason, Medicare denied the claim for the laboratory work and our client got a bill for $264. She came to me.

On March 24, 2021, I sent a very polite letter to the doctor for our client. The letter asked the doctor to correct the claim notes and refile the claim with Medicare. But the doctor ignored the letter for over two months and never responded to me or our client – the patient.

On June 2, the client returned to our office with a note that unless she paid the bill right away, the bill would be forwarded to a collections firm. This collections letter could have been avoided if the doctor had responded to my previous letter in a professional way.

For that reason, on June 2, I worked with our client to file a complaint against the doctor with the Consumer Protection Division of the Indiana Attorney General’s office. In the past, I have found that the Indiana Attorney General is more interested in protecting

senior citizens from bad billing practices than any federal official or contractor with Medicare.

Note that if the doctor or other medical service provider does not file a claim with Medicare correctly, Medicare will rule that the medical service or device is not covered

by Medicare. Then, the senior citizen patient on Medicare will receive an unexpected bill. This happens all the time.

America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places 2021 List Unveiled As the nation begins to reopen after a long period of waiting and uncertainty, the National Trust for Historic Preservation unveils its much-anticipated list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Last year, despite the country’s focus on the pandemic and the 2020 election, the 11 Most list brought critical public attention and support to the endangered places that were highlighted. The 2021 list will again demonstrate the power of historic places to capture the public imagination, revealing lesser-known stories and reminding us of the courage, perseverance, and creativity that characterizes our shared American narrative.

“This list draws attention to historic places we must protect and honor—not only because they define our past, but also because the stories they tell offer important lessons for the way forward together,” said Paul Edmondson, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “These 11 places celebrate the fact that our past is a multicultural fabric that, when pieced together, reveals our true identity as Americans.”

Annually, this list spotlights important examples of our nation’s architectural and cultural heritage that, without applied action and immediate advocacy, will be lost or face irreparable damage. Due to the efforts of the National Trust and the passionate work of our members, donors, concerned citizens, nonprofit and forprofit partners, government agencies, and others, placement on the 11 Most list is often the saving grace for important cultural landmarks.

In the 34-year history of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List, less than five percent of the more than 300 places spotlighted by the list have been lost.

“These 11 Most Endangered Historic Places,” said Katherine Malone-France, the Trust’s Chief Preservation Officer, “demonstrate that the act of preservation is a powerful form of activism itself that makes a tangible difference in the way we understand ourselves as a nation. The stories told by each of these 11 places demonstrate that our history is often not simple or easy, but it is always powerful.

That is why saving and stewarding these places and their stories is so important. They help us more accurately define who we are as a people, recognize our intricate cultural connections with each other, and inspire us to work together to build a more just and equitable future.”

The 2021 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places (alphabetical by state): Selma to Montgomery March Camp Sites, Selma, Alabama In March 1965, as thousands of Civil Rights demonstrators marched from Selma to Montgomery to campaign for full voting rights, three African American farm owners along the 54mile route courageously offered their properties as overnight camp sites for the marchers, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, and Congressman John Lewis.

These families are among those who Dr. King called the “ordinary people with extraordinary vision” as they risked their lives in support of the Civil Rights movement. Today, several of these sites—the David Hall Farm and Robert Gardner Farm—are still proudly owned by the same families and are situated along the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, but

their incredible stories remain largely untold.

Many of the farm properties now need stabilization, repair, and interpretation to expand the narrative of this significant landscape in Civil Rights history and share the stories of these families, whose tremendous bravery helped to change American history.

Summit Tunnels 6 & 7 and Summit Camp Site, Truckee, California The Summit Tunnels 6 & 7 and Summit Camp Site tell the story of thousands of Chinese railroad workers who constructed the Transcontinental Railroad through the Sierra Nevada mountains from 1865 to 1867. These workers, making up approximately 90 percent of the Central Pacific Railroad workforce, risked their lives to cut and build railroad beds and dig tunnels in incredibly difficult working conditions and extremely dangerous terrain and weather—all while being paid less than their white counterparts. Vandalism currently threatens the tunnels, resulting in extensive graffiti, as well as physical damage to cultural and natural resources at the site. The Tahoe National Forest protects the archaeological remains of Summit Camp, but visitors who don’t understand its significance are not always respectful of the site’s remaining artifacts. Highlighting how Chinese laborers accelerated the development of the American West, and better interpreting and protecting these sites, would honor this important and often overlooked part of our country’s history.

Trujillo Adobe, Riverside, California Constructed in 1862 by the Trujillo (pronounced true-HEE-yo) family, and today the oldest known building in Riverside, the Trujillo Adobe tells the story of migration and settlement in inland southern California. Lorenzo Trujillo, who built the Adobe in what was then a part of Mexico, was a Genízaro—one of many Native Americans who were captured, sometimes held in slavery, sometimes baptized and raised by Spanish colonists. Trujillo led many expeditions as a scout across the Old Spanish Trail, enabling immigrants to settle inland California, and his home became the beating heart of a community known as La Placita de los Trujillos, Spanish Town, and Agua Mansa.

The Adobe is now deteriorated and fragile, protected only by a wooden structure (also in need of repair) that hides the Adobe from view. Local advocates hope to transform the Adobe into a cultural and educational site to recognize and take pride in the multiple cultures that shaped and continue to define the region.

Georgia B. Williams Nursing Home, Camilla, Georgia The Georgia B. Williams Nursing Home was the residence of Beatrice Borders, a Black midwife who used the space to serve communities in southwest Georgia during the Jim Crow era.

Over several decades, Mrs. Borders and her assistants persevered through local and systemic racism to deliver more than 6,000 babies, and the Nursing Home provided the only known birthing center of its kind for thousands of Black women in the rural South during times of challenging economic and living conditions.

The vacant nursing home, now uninhabitable, suffers from water damage and deterioration. Local advocates are leading a campaign to rehabilitate the facility as a museum and educational center where they can share Mrs. Borders’ story as well as the stories of the children delivered by “Miss Bea.” Morningstar Tabernacle No.88 Order of Moses

Cemetery and Hall, Cabin John, Maryland.

Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Order of Moses Cemetery and Hall were established around 1885 alongside a post-Emancipation Black settlement known as Gibson Grove. Residents, some of whom had been formerly enslaved, established a local benevolent society to care for the sick and destitute, bury the deceased, and provide overall support to the local Black community. In an act of racial injustice, highway construction in the 1960s ran through the Gibson Grove community and took a portion of the cemetery site. Today, foundations are all that remain of Moses Hall, and the planned expansion of the Washington, D.C.-area Beltway further threatens the cemetery, where known burials span from 1894 to 1977. A coalition of neighbors and descendants is leading the effort to save this place by advocating that new Capital Beltway construction avoid the cemetery and hall site.

Boston Harbor Islands, Boston, Massachusetts The Boston Harbor Islands, now part of a National and State Park, are home to a wealth of historic resources dating back 12,000 years, including the most intact Native American archaeological landscape remaining in Boston, historic Fort Standish, the Boston Light, and more. Storm surges, which are intensifying due to climate change and sea level rise, are causing accelerated coastal erosion resulting in the escalated loss of archeological sites and other historic resources. Protecting these sites before their stories are lost requires greater public attention, funding for mitigation efforts and archeological studies, and strategies to document and protect historic and natural resources from climate-related storm surges.

Sarah E. Ray House, Detroit, Michigan Sarah Elizabeth Ray was a Civil Rights activist who filed a successful discrimination case after the SS Columbia, a steamboat that carried passengers to Detroit’s Bob-Lo Island Amusement Park, ejected her on the basis of race. Her 1948 case was eventually decided in Ray’s favor by the U.S. Supreme Court and was an important precursor to the Brown v. Board of Education decision, which struck down the doctrine of separate but equal educational facilities in 1954. Ray’s Civil Rights work in Detroit continued over her lifetime. Following the violent confrontations between Black residents and the city’s police department in the summer of 1967 in Detroit, Ray and her husband opened a community center called Action House to stabilize their neighborhood, promote racial tolerance, and enrich the lives of local children. They also bought the house next door for their primary residence, where Ray lived until her death in 2006. While the Action House was eventually demolished, Ray’s home remains. It is vacant and deteriorated, but still contains her personal papers, photos, books, and memorabilia. The Sarah Elizabeth Ray Project is leading the effort to save the house, conserve its contents, and elevate the story of this little-known Civil Rights activist.

The Riverside Hotel, Clarksdale, Mississippi In 1944, Mrs. Z.L. Ratliffe opened The Riverside Hotel as a boarding house for Black people, eventually extending the building to include 20 guest rooms over two floors. As one of the only Black hotels and boarding homes in Jim Crowera Mississippi, The Riverside played host to a who’s who of musical legends such as Muddy Waters, Sam Cooke, Howlin’ Wolf, and Duke Ellington, making it central to American musical

history as a landmark of the legendary Delta Blues sound and—literally—one of the birthplaces of rock and roll. Owned by the Ratliffe family since 1957, The Riverside is also the only hotel related to blues history that is still Blackowned in Clarksdale. But the building, which has not been operational since storm damage in April 2020, needs significant rehabilitation.

The current owners are seeking partnerships and funding to repair and reopen the hotel so it can continue to serve as a destination for musicians, tour groups, and other blues aficionados.

Threatt Filling Station and Family Farm, Luther, Oklahoma The entrepreneurial Threatt (pronounced THREET) family first sold produce from their 150-acre family farm outside Luther, Oklahoma, in the early 1900s, and over time expanded their offerings to include a filling station (built in 1915), ballfield, outdoor stage, and bar. The filling station was the only known Black-owned and -operated gas station along Route 66 during the Jim Crow era, making it a safe haven for Black travelers. The farm also reportedly provided refuge to Blacks displaced by the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The Threatt family still proudly owns the property and envisions revitalizing this site in time for the 2026 Centennial of Route 66, starting Route 66’s second century off with a more representative narrative of the legendary “Mother Road.” But they need partners and financial support to fully restore the filling station and bar and do justice to its stories of Black entrepreneurship and travel.

Oljato Trading Post, San Juan County, Utah The Oljato Trading Post (pronounced ole-JAYtoe) is a rare example of a once-ubiquitous mainstay in Navajo communities—trading posts that offered a wide assortment of goods, provided Navajo producers a place to sell or trade their products, and acted as community centers and social hubs. Built in 1921 by a licensed Anglo trader, the National Registerlisted Oljato complex includes a trading room, living area, storage for wares, and a traditional hogan (or sacred home) for overnighters. The trading post is now entirely in Oljato and Navajo hands, providing an opportunity to adapt the trading post in a way that brings more resources, attention, economic opportunity, and social benefits to the tribal communities.

However, the deteriorated facility needs $1.3 million for rehabilitation so it can have a new life as a community center and cultural tourist destination.

Pine Grove Elementary School, Cumberland, Virginia Built in 1917 as a Rosenwald School, the tworoom Pine Grove Elementary School served its African American agricultural community as a center for education, programs, and Civil Rights activities during the era of segregation.

After it closed in 1964, the building was saved twice by Black community leaders, alumni, and descendants of alumni. However, the proposed construction of a nearby landfill now threatens the Pine Grove Elementary School. According to the Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility, the landfill intends to accept up to 5,000 tons of waste daily and operate 24 hours a day, six days per week. Moreover, the disposal unit will be located within one thousand feet of Pine Grove Elementary School. Advocates believe that the proposed landfill could negatively impact their goal of using the school as a community center.

GOOD DEED FOR THE DAY THANKS TO RICK LESNIEWICZ OF LANSING: N 2 N was in American Legion Post 697, last week waiting for hubby Larry Kutz to emerge from a meeting. I turned SiriusXM on the radio to listen to Frank Sinatra and forgot that I had the car turned on also, but not running-- just on. I listed to Sinatra for about an hour and when Larry emerged, he went to turn on the car and the battery was dead! I had my HALO battery with me but guess what? I forgot to charge it! So that was a dead end. Enter one Rick Lesniewicz who emerged from Post 697 a little later.

I appealed to him to see if he would help this ‘damsel in distress?’ He laughed and said , “Okay. I haven’t done my good deed for the day. So, you guys are it!” Luckily, I did have full sized cables in my trunk and in one minute, Rick had our VW Passat, humming again. An animal lover who lives right across the street from the post, Rick noted that he had to get home to feed the critters he cares for. Thanks again for the help Rick Lesniewicz!! Oh, by the way, Rick is the 3rd District Indiana Service Officer Veteran’s Representative for the VA--so he does good deeds for Veterans on a regular basis! Thank You!! ***

Cook County Closes SSC Vaccination Site

Cook County Health (CCH) announced the closing of its mass vaccination site at South Suburban College (SSC) on May 29th. CCH President Toni Preckwinkle, SSC President Dr. Lynette Stokes and Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli were among the dignitaries who were present for a “clap-out” ceremony to voice their thanks and recognition for the countless individuals who worked to make the College vaccination site one of the County’s most efficient.

“Thank you to President Preckwinkle, Cook County Health, the National Guard, and our entire team here at South Suburban College for providing a significant service and sacrifice to protect our community,” said Chairman Zuccarelli. “Our success here is a demonstration of how the South Suburbs works together to accomplish our goals and lift each other up.”

Individuals who will need their second vaccination shots have been scheduled for the Matteson location, or another site closer to their residence. Other regional sites are also being closed due to a significant slowing of demand for vaccination. SSC’s site was delivering 1,200 vaccinations per day during its peak, and has provided more than 71,000 vaccinations in total.

Cook County Health is encouraging individuals who are seeking vaccination to walk-in at the Matteson location at 4647 Promenade Way, or visit myshotcookcounty.com for an updated list of vaccination sites.

South Suburban College’s drive-thru testing will continue four days a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. A second COVID-19 testing site recently opened at the College’s Oak Forest Center to provide free rapid testing through the SHIELD Illinois program. The OFC-SHIELD testing site is initially limited to two days a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. If demand increases, dates and times will be expanded. To schedule an appointment, a SHIELD account must be created through Portal.shieldillinois.com using agency code: df5brbrj. SSC will be providing the SHIELD test at no cost, compared to $100 or more for a standard nasal swab test. Current notification time for the saliva test is less than 24 hours.

Build, Learn, Grow initiative to help working families connect to early care and education The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Build, Learn, Grow initiative, has made 50,000 scholarships available to help get Hoosier children from families working in essential industries – regardless of income enrolled in early care and education, summer learning or out-of-school care. Scholarships run from May through October 2021 and will cover up to 80% of the early care and education program’s tuition for each child age 12 and younger. Information is available at www.

For families to qualify for Build, Learn, Grow scholarships, an adult in the household must work in an essential business (examples include health care, human services, retail, restaurant and food service, essential infrastructure, media, manufacturing and logistics, religious and charitable organizations and many others). Income guidelines are outlined here. Families will qualify for The Build, Learn, Grow scholarship to cover 80% of their cost with incomes of up to 250% of the federal poverty level. Families with incomes between 251% and 400% of FPL will qualify for 60% of costs covered and those with incomes at 401% of FPL

and above will qualify for 20% of costs covered.

Families should complete the Build, Learn, Grow Scholarship Fund application found here and submit it to their early care and education provider. Families not currently connected to an early care and education program will be able to find a list of participating programs on the Build, Learn, Grow website also on the eligibility page. All providers who currently accept federal child care assistance are encouraged to enroll.

The scholarships are funded by more than $101 million provided to Indiana by the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, or CRRSA. And it’s a good idea to recognize the importance of good communications because it plays a role in almost every aspect of living – including your finances. You’ll want to clearly communicate your financial goals to your loved ones – and you’ll want to hear theirs, too.

Let’s look at some of the communications you might have with family members: Your spouse – You and your spouse may have different thoughts about a range of financial topics – how much to save, how much to spend, the level of debt with which you’re comfortable and so on. Try to reach some type of consensus on these issues.

However, in regard to investing, you don’t necessarily have to act in unison all the time. You each may have different investment styles – one of you may be more aggressive, willing to take on more risk in exchange for potentially higher returns, while the other would rather invest with an eye toward mitigating risk, even it means accepting a lower return. Of course, there’s nothing stopping each of you from pursuing your individual investment strategies in your own accounts – IRA, 401(k) and so on. Still, if you are going to work toward common goals – especially toward a shared vision of your retirement lifestyle – you each may want to compromise in your investment choices. And this accommodation is even more necessary in your joint accounts.

Your parents – If you may someday be involved with your parents’ financial plans – which is highly likely – you should know in advance what to expect. This may not be the easiest conversation to have, but it’s an important one. So, for example, ask your parents if they have a durable power

of attorney, which allows them to designate someone to manage their financial affairs if they become physically or mentally incapacitated. You might also inquire if they have protected themselves against the potentially enormous costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. If not, you might suggest that they contact a financial advisor, who can offer solutions.

Once you begin communicating about these issues, you may well want to go further into your parents’ estate plans to determine what other arrangements, if any, they have made. If it seems that their plans are not fully developed, you may want to encourage them to contact an attorney specializing in estate planning.

Your grown children – Just as you talk to your parents about their estate plans, you’ll want to discuss the same topic with your own grown children. Let them know who you have named as a durable power of attorney, what’s in your last will and testament and whether you’ve established a living trust. If you’re already working with a financial advisor and an estate planning professional, make sure your children know how to contact these individuals. Of course, you don’t have to confine your communications to estate plans – if you want to help your children financially, such as loaning them money for a down payment on a home, let them know.

By talking with your loved ones about key financial matters, everyone benefits. So, keep those lines of communication open.

Bidding Wars and Waiving Contingencies MIKE BUDER Last week, I explained how many buyers in today’s market are using escalation riders to get an edge over competing offers on popular listings. Another strategy I am seeing buyers resort to is waiving contingencies, which means getting rid of certain conditions on the offer that can either delay or kill the transaction after terms have been agreed to. On some transactions a buyer can elect to waive the appraisal contingency. This means if the home appraises for less, the buyer will and can still go through with the deal. Usually that means the buyer will come up with money out of pocket in order to make sure the mortgage lender’s loan to value (LTV) requirements are met. The buyer can also offer to waive the financing contingency whereby if the loan is denied the buyer will still continue with the purchase. This only works however where the buyer can show they have access to enough cash to make the home purchase in the event the mortgage is denied. When waiving either the appraisal or mortgage contingency, the sellers will be asking for a proof of funds (POF) similar to a cash offer.

Some of today’s buyers are also waiving the home inspection contingency in order to make their offer more competitive. In other cases, the buyer opts for no inspection at

all, which does make an offer much more competitive. However, waiving the inspection entirely puts a lot of risk on the buyer.

If after moving in the buyer discovers major foundation issues, mold issues, termite infestation, or something else that will be costly to repair the buyers are on the hook to pay for those repairs. A safer option for a buyer would be to purchase the property “as-is” but still leave the home inspection contingency in. This means the buyer will not ask the seller to perform repairs, however, if a major defect is discovered from the inspection the buyer can cancel the contract within the inspection contingency period. The bottom line when buying a home in a seller’s market is buyers need to come up with every advantage they can to beat out other offers. Buyers also need to understand the risks involved as well with certain strategies like removing the home inspection contingency.

Illinois may allow studentathletes to receive compensation for images and likenesses As an ex-college player and advocate for student-athletes, State Senator Napoleon Harris, III (D-Harvey) is nearing victory in his fight to allow Illinois student-athletes to receive compensation from their use names, images, or likenesses who attend Illinois colleges and universities.

“These student athletes shed their blood, sweat, and tears to play college sports,” Harris said. “Their schools’ benefit off their talent by selling clothing, rights to use their images in video games and more. The kids deserve to get financial benefit, too especially at powerhouse universities who generate millions of dollars.”

The NCCA came out in support of paying college athletes but still has not provided guidelines on compensation for participating in sports other than through scholarships.

Senate Bill 2338 allows student-athletes to earn compensation for use of their names, images, or likenesses – not their athletic ability. This legisla-

tion would be preempted if the federal government or the NCAA enacts its own regulations.

This legislation would prohibit student-athletes from benefiting from their athletic abilities, participating in intercollegiate athletics or sports competitions, attending a specific educational institution, or entering into a publicity rights agreement.

The legislation would also help Illinois stay competitive with other states, like California. In 2019, California’s governor signed a similar law, making that state more appealing to studentathletes.

“This legislation is not just about money. It’s about right and wrong, and we need to protect the rights of every student-athlete in Illinois, Harris said. “Student-athletes deserve to receive benefits for the use of their images and likenesses.”

Senate Bill 2338 passed the Senate and now heads to governor.

1 in 10 Illinoisans have given up alcohol since the start of the pandemic It has been widely reported that lockdowns have had a significant impact on our lifestyles.

While it has inevitably had a negative effect on some people’s habits - turning to drink, or drugs, or increasing their use of one or both - for others, it appears it has actually been a force of good. That’s according to DrugAbuse. com, a national resource for alcohol and substance abuse treatment, who surveyed 3,200 Americans to find out how many had formed better habits during the pandemic and why.

The results included the encouraging statistic that 1 in 10 Illinoisans have actually given up alcohol or drastically cut down since the start of the pandemic. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two main reasons why are to do with socializing.

A quarter (26%) of those who said they’d cut down on drinking over the past year explained that the lack of after-work drinking had been a significant factor - it’s harder to head out with colleagues after a long, hard day in the office when, well, you’re not in the office in the first place. And a third (32%) said the lack of regular get-togethers with drinking buddies was what prompted them to cut down.

For those who gave up alcohol completely over the last year, 52% said their main reason for doing so was because they were actively trying

to be healthier, while 28% said the main reason was to save money. Another 14% indicated that the main reason they gave up drinking during the pandemic was that they simply got bored of alcohol, while 3% did so to avoid hangovers.

Lastly, another 3% say they quit alcohol during the pandemic to improve their relationships between friends and family.

However, there is a worry among some of those surveyed - 28%, in fact - that they will go back to drinking when restrictions are lifted, i.e. when bars are open again, after-work drinks resume when they go back to the office, or when they take vacations.

Despite this, the survey also found that there have been other benefits to lockdowns; nearly half of respondents (45%) have been grateful to spend more time with their partner, or family, and more than a third (35%) have enjoyed the sense of community spirit which emerged during the pandemic and brought people closer together - things like collecting groceries for a neighbor, for example. A climate-conscious 9% have been grateful for the decrease in pollution, 6% have been taking on home improvement projects, and 3% have been enjoying more sleep.

Illinois CPA Society Announces 2021 Scholarship Recipients The Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS) is pleased to award $104,500 in scholarships through the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois to 55 accounting students as part of its annual Accounting Scholarship Program, which supports accounting students at Illinois colleges and universities who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership qualities, and financial need.

While most of the scholarships reward college upperclassmen for their hard work thus far, this year ICPAS awarded eight scholarships to racial and ethnic minority high school seniors who are planning to major in accounting this fall. These scholarships for incoming freshmen aim to increase awareness of the accounting profession among minority students and prepare them for success as they begin their college careers.

All these scholarships are possible thanks to the generous giving of more than 1,000 donors who support the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois. Donor contributions also support initiatives like ICPAS’ CPA Exam Award Program and Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparation Program, which help students and CPA candidates transition into the profession by enhancing their business skills and providing financial aid toward their CPA exam fees.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I took a few small bushes from my yard because they were given to me by my late Mom. The buyer noticed this and complained that they had to stay. Does certain personal property have to stay with the home when I sell?

Answer: When selling or buying a home, you need to think ahead about what you are actually selling along with the property and the house.

The general rule is, “if it attached to the structure or the ground, it is real property and stays with the house.”

For example, curtains are attached, but will the sellers leave them?

They may match the decor in the seller’s next home. What if they take them and the buyers assumed they would stay?

This can cause a disagreement. Disagreements tend to move from minor issues to major issues, because emotions rule and logic melts away.

So if you want to take your curtains with you, put it in the contract. Don’t “assume” anything.

Buyers and sellers can argue about the silliest things.

Believe it or not, there is a story about how a deal almost fell apart because the buyer wanted the sellers to leave the welcome mat.

It must have been a really nice welcome mat. Normally, sellers are free to take their welcome mat with them when they move.

The point is that you need to think about these things in advance. If you have to unscrew a screw, detach anything from the interior or exterior structure, or uproot anything from the ground -- and you want to take it with you when you move -- put it in the contract. That way there are no possible misunderstandings later.

As far as the bushes go, explain to the buyer the sentimental value in these bushes and ask if you can replace them with something else suitable to the buyers.

Our beloved child of God, Ms. Wyonnie Lindsey Wofford, was born on Thursday, April 21, 1938, in Selma, Arkansas to Rev. Roosevelt Lindsey, Sr. and Inez Butler Lindsey. She died (transitioned) on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at University of Chicago Medicine-Ingalls Memorial Hospital, in Harvey, IL. The service was held Monday, May 24, 2021 at Leak & Sons Chapel. She was married earlier in her life. Our mother was 83-years-old, and the oldest child (daughter) of five children. She loved family, her career, life and the Lord.

Mom loved her family and was affectionately called Wy; Sis; Grandma Wy or G Wy; Tee Tee;

She had a very special loving relationship with her parents, family and friends. Wy had a heart full of love, she would listen, give advice and support her loved ones anytime they needed her.

At the age of 16, Mother Inez shared that Wyonnie decided on a career in Nursing. Her first job was in Housekeeping at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello, Arkansas. In 1956, she graduated from Drew High School, where Black students attended in Monticello, Arkansas. After a few years at her first job at the hospital, and attending Arkansas Agricultural Mechanical & Normal (AM&N) College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, she moved to Chicago, IL to continue her educational and career journey.

Mom worked at the Cook County Board of Health, while earning an Associate of Arts Degree from Olive Harvey College. She then went on to earn her nursing degree, from Triton College, as she worked at Roosevelt Hospital. Mom continued her health care journey at Cook County Hospital; St. Mary’s of Nazareth; and Illinois Central. After 45 years of nursing and caring for the sick, her final career stop was at Oak Forrest Hospital, where she retired as a Licensed Practical Nurse, after 25 years of service at the age of 70.

Wow, what a career and life!

Most of us knew her family roots included hard workers and she worked a lot, but Mom also enjoyed reading, traveling, shopping and spending time with family and friends. Mom’s Illinois Nursing Association was always sponsoring trips throughout the years, and she became an international traveler. The Red Hat Society, which is an international fun society for women 50 and beyond, gave mom another opportunity to socialize and travel locally and out-of-state.

She enjoyed this group in retirement. Oh, we can’t leave out her weekly journey to the South Holland Community Center where movies, bingos, banquet dinners, and $1.50 lunches were a hit! Yeah, mom enjoyed the Center and all these non-working activities, with blessings from the Lord.

Mom was a devoted Christian woman, whose roots were from the church. As a Pastor’s Kid (PK), it was evident that she embraced the spiritual teachings of her parents throughout her life. For over 28 years, she was a member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church, on 12th & Roosevelt Road in Chicago. Due to the distance from her new home in South Holland, IL., Mom transferred her membership to the Calvary Community Church in South Holland. In 2018, her health began to

decline and she was unable to attend and participate in church services/activities as she preferred. However, Wy’s intimate relationship with Christ increased her faith and trust in God to continue her healing journey . She knew that the Lord was her Shepard… and surely goodness and mercy shall follow me (Wy) all the days of my life: and I(Wy) will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Wyonnie was preceded in death by her son, Kelvin Lindsey and her father, Rev. Roosevelt Lindsey, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory, Mother, Inez B. Lindsey, of Monticello, AR., two sons; Dexter G. Johnson (Karla) Carbondale, IL, Dennis L. Lindsey (Anita) of South Holland, IL., seven grandchildren, Dexter G. Johnson, II (Nnebuife), Katona S. Lindsey, Sr., (Brandi), and Bryan Lindsey, six great-grandchildren; Daveon, Brenton Jr., Robbin, Amari, Andrew,and Aubrey, two brothers; Ricky W. Lindsey (Jackie) Richton Park, IL, Rev. Roosevelt Lindsey, Jr. (Dr. Kaye) Calabasas, CA; two sisters: Rev. Dr. Peggy L. Owens ( Rev. Ray) Raeford, NC, Debra L. Lindsey, New Orleans, LA and three nieces; Daphney, Katrina, Lindse’, four nephews; Keith, Phillip Sr., Jeremiah, Joshua and a host of grand nephews, grand nieces, uncles, aunts,cousins, relatives, and friends.

A special thanks to Anita Lindsey, Keith Lindsey, Karla Johnson, Angie Clark, and friends Diane Washington, Mildred Graves and Jackie Jackson for the love and personal sacrifice they showed during her time of need.

The Highland Parks and Recreation Annual Spring Dance Showcase

The Highland Parks and Recreation Youth Dance Program is getting ready for their Annual Spring Dance Showcase on June 12th. The Dance Program is under the direction of Katie Solina.

The dancers are very excited to have their annual showcase this year after not being able to have one last year due to the pandemic. A lot of the dancers continued their dance instruction online through Zoom Dance last year. The classes were taught by their teacher, Miss Katie. All of the dancers have been working very hard and are excited to perform in the Showcase that is outside this year! Summer classes for the Youth Dance Program begin June 21st. Registration is now available at the Lincoln Center in Highland or on their website at Highlandparks.org.
