Support Mental Health in Rural America: The value of sharing lived experiences. Throughout many parts of the country, an increased understanding of mental health has led to enhanced awareness of its importance. A catchall description of emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, mental health affects how people think, feel and act, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, mental health is an important component of overall health. However, in some instances, there remains a gap between understanding mental health and embracing solutions, particularly in rural areas. “When my 28-year-old nephew died by suicide in a farming community where mental illness was a subject never discussed, my mother courageously announced ‘Enough is enough. We are going to talk about this, and we are going to talk about this in detail,’” said Jeff Winton, founder and chairman of the board of nonprofit Rural Minds. His commitment to confronting suicide and mental illness in rural areas supports the goal of the organization, which is to serve as an informed voice for mental health in rural America and provide mental health information and resources. A major barrier to individuals seeking help in rural communities is the stigma often associated with mental health challenges. The organization is working to confront the stigma through people talking about their personal, lived experiences with mental illness. Recognizing the value of sharing deeply personal accounts of mental illness is also the message of Jeff Ditzenberger, a farmer who attempted suicide. His own challenges confronting and managing his bipolar II disorder while returning to farming motivated Ditzenberger to found TUGS, a mental health nonprofit with the mission to address the stigma surrounding mental health challenges and suicide. Passionate about normalizing discussions about mental illness, Ditzenberger is working with Rural Minds to encourage others in rural areas to talk about their challenges with PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia or other mental issues. The goal is for people to become as comfortable with the discussion of mental health as they are talking about COVID-19, the common cold or the flu. Mental health professionals agree that opening up about mental health challenges can be the first step to finding a path forward. “Sharing the burden of mental illness and life experiences can be really, really powerful,” said Dr. Mark A. Fry, consultant in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic. “As a psychiatrist, I would tell you it’s a critically important part of the

COUPON overall treatment plan. In my opinion, the concept of providing peer support – sharing lived experiences with mental illness and supporting each other – really is invaluable.” Barriers to Seeking Metal Health Support in Rural Areas While mental health is imperative for overall health, some people do not recognize mental illness as a disease; rather, it is sometimes perceived as a character flaw or personal weakness. “Mental illness is an illness – just like cancer or diabetes,” Winton said. “Just as it is with many other diseases, the person who is ill is not responsible for getting the illness. Much of the stigma around mental illness may be rooted in the misdirected and unfair shame that can be an added burden for someone who is already suffering with a mental illness. “Similar to many people in rural America, I grew up on a farm and was taught to pull myself up by my bootstraps and get over it, to just move on and to not think about it. Well, that is not an acceptable response to a mental illness. You don’t do that with other illnesses. You can’t do that with mental illness.” Collaboration is Key In the spirit of collaborating to better serve the mental health needs of rural America, Rural Minds is partnering with The National Grange, a family, community organization with roots in agriculture that was founded in 1867. “Our aim in collaborating is to develop a grassroots, person-toperson approach to provide people who live in rural communities with mental health and suicide prevention information by working with local Granges, civic groups and community leaders across the country,” Winton said. Help is Available There are several established organizations that provide mental health information and services across the country, but Rural Minds focuses entirely on confronting the mental health challenges in rural communities.

BNI graduate hits million dollar mark for scholarship offers It’s not unusual for graduating classes of Bishop Noll to earn millions of dollars in college scholarship offers, but it is unusual for one student to earn more than $1 million on his own. By the time Bishop Noll’s Matthew Salazar walked across the graduation stage on June 3, he had received more than $1.1 million in college scholarship offers from 21 colleges including Saint Xavier University, DePauw University, Bradley University and Valparaiso University. Salazar, who plans to study business, ultimately selected Purdue University in West Lafayette. “I received scholarship offers from almost every school I applied to,” he said. “All of the scholarship money that I was awarded was based on the grades I received throughout high school and test scores.” Like all seniors, Salazar dealt with the effects of the pandemic for multiple years in high school, and said that was his biggest challenge. “Having to do classes online was tough, especially trying to remain focused while being stuck at home all day looking at an iPad.” Salazar was named a Graduate with Distinction, reserved for seniors graduating with at least a 4.0 GPA. He was also a National Honor Society member and a player on BNI’s baseball team all four years. “All of the teachers and staff at Bishop Noll have inspired me. They have all pushed me to do better and work hard to make sure that I am reaching my full potential.” Choosing a high school four years ago was a tough decision, said Salazar, who attended public elementary school in Chicago. “I decided to attend Bishop Noll even though I did not know many people. As my high school career is quickly coming to an end I realized that I made the right choice to attend Bishop Noll. The relationships I have made here with the students and staff is something unbreakable and the experiences and memories made are unforgettable.” Bishop Noll’s Class of 2021 included 101 graduates and as a group, they received more than $12.1 million in college scholarship offers. Now in its 101st school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education, including the highest graduation rate (99%) of any high school in Lake County over the past six years. Noll is part of the Diocese of Gary, offering a discount to Diocesan families, and participates in the Indiana School Choice program.

Disputing Errors on your Credit Report MIKE BUDER If you are in the process of reviewing your credit report, the first thing to do is make sure that the information contained within the report is correct. Recently, a U.S. public interest research group published the results of a survey it conducted involving 200 adults in 30 states to test the validity of credit reporting. Their findings were as follows: 25% of the credit reports contained errors serious enough to result in the denial of credit; 79% contained mistakes of some kind; 54% contained personal demographic information that was misspelled, longoutdated, belonged to a stranger, or otherwise incorrect; and 30% of the credit reports contained credit accounts that had been closed by the consumer but incorrectly remained listed as open. If you find errors on your credit report, follow this procedure to correct these errors. 1. Make a copy of the report and circle the items you are questioning. Keep the original copy for your own records. 2. Prepare a letter to the Credit Reporting Agency (CRA) that provided you with the report in question and request to have the erroneous item(s) removed. If you have proof of payment for an item in question include a copy of that documentation. 3. Prepare a letter to the creditor reporting the problem, especially if you feel you are a victim of fraud or identity

theft. Inform the creditor that you are disputing an error reported to the CRA. State why the claim is inaccurate and include any relevant documentation to prove your point. 4. Send your correspondence via Certified Mail. You should receive a response from the CRA within 30 to 45 days. If the error has been corrected, they will send you a fresh copy of your credit report at no charge to show you that the item has been removed. They will also send a corrected report to any entity that received a report that contained errors within the last 6 months. If you cannot have a disputed item removed, you have the right to include your side of the story on the credit report. Your statement should be a concise explanation (100 words or less) as to why you are challenging the item in question. From that point on, this notation will be included in your credit report as long as the item in question remains on your report. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your comments are always welcome. RICHARD ZEKVELD Back to Olaudah Equiano, the kidnapped African who purchased his freedom and became a primary champion in the fight to end slavery and the slave trade in the British Empire: Equiano’s personal experience of slavery and the slave trade and the horrors done to his own people fueled his passion in the fight. But another powerful force also drove Equiano – his living faith in Christ and his Word. Christ was the Source of the conviction and love that drove him. Equiano describes his conversion in The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa the African Written by Himself. “The Lord was pleased to break in on my soul with his bright beams of heavenly light, and in an instant… I saw clearly with the eye of faith the crucified Saviour bleeding on the cross on mount Calvary: the scriptures became an unsealed book, I saw myself a condemned criminal under the law, which came with its full force to my conscience… I saw the Lord Jesus Christ in his humiliation, loaded and bearing my reproach, sin and shame. I then clearly perceived that by the deeds of the law, no flesh living could be justified… The word of God was sweet to my taste… Christ was revealed to my soul as the chiefest among ten thousand… When I considered my poor wretched state, I wept, seeing what a great debtor I was to sovereign, free grace.” True Christianity does not pit personal faith against a public care for mercy and justice. True Christianity does not abuse Scripture to justify evil. Many of Equiano’s colaborers in the cause shared his living faith. The power of Christ in them also drove them forward in the cause of freedom. Happy Juneteenth, everyone.

Cong. Mrvan’s 2nd Veterans Bill to be Signed into Law President Biden is expected to sign into law the VA Electronic Health Record Transparency Act, a bill introduced by Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization. Previously, the House approved Rep. Mrvan’s legislation by a voice vote in November of 2021, and the Senate approved Rep. Mrvan’s legislation without an amendment by a voice vote on May 26, 2022. The VA Electronic Health Record Transparency Act aims to improve the management of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) project. In the past year, the VA Office of the Inspector General has found that VA is not conducting reliable and complete cost estimates for infrastructure upgrades and costs under the EHRM program. This legislation will require VA to provide Congress with quarterly reports that assess the full costs, performance metrics, and outcomes. “As Chairman of the Technology

Modernization Subcommittee, I have seen the great need for Congress to conduct oversight and have accurate information to ensure that the Electronic Health Record Modernization program is able to meet the needs of our veterans,” said Congressman Mrvan. “I thank the leaders of the Senate for also seeing the value of this legislation, and as we move forward, I look forward to obtaining the requested information and continuing our work to ensure that all veterans receive the world-class health care they deserve.” This is Rep. Mrvan’s second piece of legislation that President Biden has signed into law. Previously, on September 30, 2021, President Biden signed the Department of Veterans Affairs Expiring Authorities Act of 2021 into law, a bill that extended various veteran benefits, including certain transportation benefits and the VA’s authority to administer dental insurance for veterans, their dependents, and certain survivors who are enrolled in the VA health care system.

WE CARE ABOUT PERFECT AIR.

ESPECIALLY YOURS.

On June 7, 2022, an agent in our Schererville office introduced me to a client who had a problem with Medicare. I spent over an hour and a half to help her fix the problem. The client was from East Chicago, Indiana. She did not have only one problem. She had two. One was that Medicare and Social Security had made mistakes regarding her payments of Medicare Part B premiums. I helped her to complain to her congressman about the inept bungling of those two federal agencies. The second problem was that Medicare took over four months to update her Medicare file to show that she had Medicare and the Medicare supplement insurance plan that our agency helped her to select. All her claims (medical bills) needed to be refiled with Medicare. So, I typed a letter for her to deliver or mail to every medical firm where she got service during the over four months that Medicare waited to update her file. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I typed for the client to deliver or send to the medical firms. We helped our client select her Medicare supplement insurance plan which became effective on 01/01/2022. Today, in a phone call to Medicare, she and I learned that Medicare did not update

her file to show that she had a secondary insurer until May 4, 2022. That is not the fault of the patient – our client. If you filed a claim with Medicare for services rendered between January 1, 2022 and May 4, 2022, it probably was denied. Medicare caused this problem. To fix this problem as fast as possible, please refile any claim that was previously denied. Thank you for your cooperation. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems for free. It is a way we show our clients that we really do care for them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance company that does? This one does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available from book stores and online.

Cook County Sheriff’s Police investigators are seeking information from the public to help identify one of the juveniles that vandalized the Homewood Acres Fire Station in southwest suburban Homewood. At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30, Cook County Sheriff’s Police responded to a burglary call at the Homewood Acres Fire Department. Upon arrival, officers found extensive damage throughout the station including broken toilets, windows, TVs, computers, and cabinets. No offenders were located inside at the time.

On Saturday, May 28, security cameras captured images of two white male juveniles smashing the walls with hammers and causing extensive property damage between the hours of 8:14 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. During this time, the two boys briefly left the property, changed their appearance, and returned. On Thursday, June 2, one of the boys was arrested and charged with burglary. Sheriff’s police are still trying to locate the other juvenile. Anyone with information, or if they recognize the juvenile, is asked to contact Sheriff’s Police detectives at 708-865-4896 or 847-635-1188.

Financial Advice Column

What’s your investment risk tolerance? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Risk is a normal part of investing. If you didn’t take on any risk, you wouldn’t have the potential to achieve higher returns. But how much risk should you accept? You don’t want to incur unnecessary risk. So, you’ll need to assess the amount of risk you’re comfortable taking and then determine if this risk level supports your ability to achieve your long-term goals. Here are some of the key factors in determining your own capacity for investment risk: • Personality – We all have different personalities. And your individual personality can certainly affect your comfort level with risk. If you enjoy taking chances or pushing yourself outside your comfort zone in other aspects of your life, you could be more likely to accept greater investment risk, too, because you know that greater risk means greater potential reward. Conversely, higher-risk investments also carry greater potential for volatility, including steep short-term declines. • Time – Risk tolerance can change over time. When you are first starting out in your career, with decades to go until you retire, you may feel comfortable with a certain degree of investment risk, knowing you have time to potentially overcome the inevitable downturns in the financial markets. But as you near retirement, you might consider lowering your risk level and investing more conservatively, because once you do retire, you’ll likely have to start withdrawing money from your retirement accounts, which means you may need to liquidate some investments – and, ideally, you won’t want to have large fluctuations in value at that time. However, even during retirement, you may want your portfolio to include some growthoriented investments to help keep you ahead of inflation.

• Type of goal – You might have different risk tolerances for different goals. For example, if you know you need a specific amount for a particular goal in two years – such as buying a new car or taking an overseas vacation – you may want to put away money in a low-risk, liquid vehicle. This type of investment might not have much growth potential, but for this goal, you are less interested in achieving a high rate of return than you are in being reasonably sure the money will be there when you need it. So, in this instance, you may have quite a low tolerance for risk. But for a long-term goal, such as a comfortable retirement, you may be prepared to take more risk in the hopes of greater returns, given the longer time horizon. By understanding your risk tolerance and knowing how it can change over time and under different circumstances, you can be better prepared to face investment volatility. And there are certainly things you can do to mitigate risk. By owning a variety of investments – domestic and international stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on – you can reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.) In any case, the biggest risk of all is simply not investing. If you are going to achieve your financial goals, you need to invest for them. By understanding your own risk tolerance, and by making wise choices along the way, you can stick with an investment strategy that can work for you in the long run. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Patrick Zamkin 18735 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL 60430, (708) 798-9066. Edward Jones. Member SIPC.

Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m selling my home in a great area. We had many offers and the one we took was $20,000 over the asking price. The buyers are putting in a lot of cash and are only financing $100,000 of the $600,000 sale price. We’re afraid that our house will not be worth that much, but does the lender care? Answer: Lenders care very much about value and risk. They will make a loan based on the sale price or the appraised value, whichever is less. If a buyer wants to pay more, that’s okay -- as long as the additional price is not paid with lender funds. You have a home selling for $600,000 and a borrower who is putting up $500,000 in cash. The lender is providing $100,000. The lender wants to be certain that in the event of

foreclosure the property has sufficient value to re-pay the loan. In this case, even if the property sold at a 75 percent discount from the sale price, there would still be enough value to re-pay the lender. From the lender’s perspective, this is a loan situation with virtually no risk because there is so much equity in the property -- that $500k put up by the purchaser. Summer means extra time outdoors. Sunny months provide a perfect opportunity for bonding with pets, but higher temperatures, seasonal plants and pests and additional travel can pose higher risks for complications. To help keep dogs, cats and other pets safe during summer adventures, consider these tips from the experts at VCA Animal Hospitals, which has more than 1,000 locations across North America that cared for more than 4.5 million pets last year. Beat the Heat Dogs and cats cannot control their body temperature by sweating as humans do. They have a small number of sweat glands located in their footpads and primarily regulate their temperature by panting. Vigorous exercise, leaving a pet in a vehicle with poor ventilation - even if the windows are down - or being left outside without shade and water on hot days can lead to heatstroke, or hyperthermia. Increased humidity combined with warmer temperatures intensifies the risk of heat stroke, especially during the first few warm days as pets transition to outdoor activity. If your pet exhibits any symptoms of heatstroke - elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, lethargy, disorientation, abnormal gum color, bruised gums or seizures - pour cool water over your pet’s head, stomach and feet or apply cool, wet cloths, ensure continuous airflow and see a veterinarian immediately. Keep Ticks at Bay As pets spend more time outdoors in the summer, they’re often exposed to pests like ticks. Ticks can transmit serious diseases to both dogs and cats. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, as many as 1 in 20 dogs tested positive for tick-borne diseases in 2021. Ticks climb onto pets from blades of grass or fall from overhanging trees and foliage. If a tick finds its way onto your pet, use tweezers or disposable gloves to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible then pull straight out with steady, even pressure until the tick releases. If you find a tick, carefully inspect all areas of skin, including behind the ears and between

the toes, for additional ticks. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area with soap and water and wash your hands. Save the tick in a resealable plastic bag to show your veterinarian and take note of the time and place the bite occurred and any other details that may aid your veterinarian should an illness occur. Follow your veterinarian’s advice about tick preventative measures, and make sure the product is safe to be used for your pet’s size. Never use dog flea and tick products on cats. Travel Safely If you plan to travel with your pet, pack the necessities for your animal. Your pet’s luggage should include food, water bowls, treats, a leash and collar, toys, medications and printed copies of medical records, including vaccination history. Check with your veterinarian to determine if a health certificate is needed for travel. Also ensure your pet is comfortable with his or her crate or carrier before flying or embarking on a long road trip. Knowing where to take your pet in case of an emergency while away from home is also essential. Look up emergency veterinary clinics near your destination before departing or ask if your vet offers virtual care options. For example, through the myVCA app, you can access 24/7 live chat with licensed veterinary professionals. Manage Allergies Many of the same allergens that affect humans impact pets. Atopy, also known as inhalant allergy, is a common cause of skin problems in dogs and cats. Affected animals often have a history of chronic or recurrent itching and tend to have a history of repeated skin or ear infections. Itchy pets tend to scratch themselves, lick their feet and rub on furniture or carpet. Atopy can also cause cats to groom excessively and develop bald or crusty spots on their skin. Some allergies may also affect the respiratory or digestive systems or the eyes. If your pet is displaying signs of allergies, your veterinarian can recommend appropriate testing and treatment to reduce symptoms. Visit vcahospitals.com to find more ways to keep pets safe throughout the summer and book an appointment.

Indiana American Water Gives More Than $295,000 to Its Communities in 2021

Indiana American Water today announced that it donated more than $295,000 last year to organizations in the communities it serves across the state through general charitable contributions and programming support. The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides grants and contributions where American Water employees live, work and operate, also donated $40,850 to 77 non-profit organizations in Indiana in 2021. “In addition to providing safe, clean and reliable water and wastewater services to our customers, we are also committed to giving back to our partner communities,” said Indiana American Water President Matt Prine. “Our employees and their families live, work and engage in the communities we serve to make them better places. It is a core part of our values and who we are as a company. “Whether it’s through supporting local charities and social service organizations, awarding environmental grants, or involvement in various community, economic development, and service organizations, we are active participants in every community we serve,” Prine continued. “Last year alone, our employees volunteered 1,065 hours in the communities we serve and nearly 150 times for local community events.” Each year, Indiana American Water provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to its communities through its Environmental Grant Program, firefighter grants, support for economic development organizations, and other charitable contributions and community partnerships. Indiana American Water employees also donated to dozens of organizations across the state through United Way and the American Water Charitable Foundation’s volunteer and matching gift program. Filet Mignon with Blue Cheese Chive Butter

Recipe courtesy of Omaha Steaks Executive Chef David Rose Servings: 2

Omaha Steaks Private Reserve Filet Mignons Omaha Steaks Private Reserve Rub To make blue cheese chive butter: In medium bowl, use rubber spatula to fold and incorporate butter, blue cheese, chives, salt and pepper. Section 18 inches of plastic wrap and place blue cheese chive butter about 6 inches above bottom. Take bottom portion of plastic wrap and place over blue cheese chive butter then shape butter into 1 1/2-inch cylinder. Continue to roll butter in plastic; pinch ends of plastic wrap while rolling to tighten cylinder. Once size and tightness are achieved, tie off loose ends of plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator 1-2 hours, until blue cheese chive butter is chilled and firm. To make filet mignon: Bring filet mignons to room temperature, about 20 minutes; pat dry and season on both sides with rub, to taste. Prepare grill for 500 F direct heat. For medium-rare, place steaks on grill 3-4 minutes. Flip and cook 2-3 minutes, or until 130-140 F internal temperature is reached. Rest 7-8 minutes before serving. Slice chilled blue cheese chive butter into 1/2-inch pieces and place on top of filets.
