Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois Press Foundation Award Grants to 16 High School Journalism Programs Illinois Farm Bureau and the Illinois Press Foundation today announce the awarding of grants to 16 high school journalism efforts throughout the state. The awards are part of the Illinois High School Journalism Grants Program offered by the Illinois Press Foundation and financially sponsored this year by Illinois Farm Bureau. More than $21,000 total in grants will be distributed to the schools in the fall to pay for laptops, cameras, podcasting stations and more. The Illinois Press Foundation Board of Directors’ Education Committee approved the grant recipients. “We’re really looking forward to visiting each of these schools in the fall when we present the grant checks,” said Jeff Rogers, director of the Illinois Press Foundation. “It’s so invigorating to see students engaged in journalism and excited about learning the foundational elements of the craft. “This year’s group of grant recipients is especially interesting because not only is there a variety in the regions where the schools are located, but there’s a diversity in the forms of journalism being practiced. Student newspapers. Agriculture programs. Multimedia digital platforms. Podcasts. Film clubs. Even a TV news broadcast. They’re all part of this year’s class of grant recipients.” Chris Magnuson, executive director of Illinois Farm Bureau’s News and Communication division, congratulated the 2022 grant recipients. “The talent inside each of these programs is promising, and helping these programs develop and grow is rewarding,” Magnuson said. This year’s grant recipients include: • Bremen High School in Midlothian, $1,440 for 12 photo video kits • Downers Grove North High School, $1,500 for a video camera and microphones • Downers Grove South High School, $1,400 for a camera kit including a camera and lens • Galena High School, $1,420 for video editing software • Harrisburg High School, $1,320 for Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions • Jacksonville High School, $450 for website hosting fees for 1 year • John Hancock College Preparatory High School in Chicago, $1,500 for subscriptions to online audio editing programs • Kenwood Academy High School in Chicago, $1,500 for

podcast equipment, website hosting fees and a laptop • Madison School in South Holland, $1,500 for an iPad background kit, tripods, smartphone teleprompters and microphones • Mercer County High School in Aledo, $1258 for microphones for use in podcasts • Morgan Park High School in Chicago, $1,360 for a camera and lens • Okawville High School, $1,100 for website hosting fees, video equipment and an Adobe Creative Cloud license • Plainfield High School, $1,025 for a camera and lens • St. Charles North High School, $1,500 for a Canon camcorder • Thornridge High School in Dolton, $1,500 for three external camera flashes • York Community High School in Elmhurst, $1,350 for a Motion Array subscription for access to copyright-free video and audio clips The Illinois Farm Bureau is a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, a national organization of farmers and ranchers. Founded in 1916, IFB is a non-profit, membership organization directed by farmers who join through their county Farm Bureau. IFB has a total membership of more than 378,237 and a voting membership of 77,909. IFB represents three out of four Illinois farmers. The Illinois Press Foundation is dedicated to promoting and protecting free expression through educational activities that foster the practice and respect of First Amendment principles and values, to enhance the quality of services provided by newspapers to their communities, and to support reading and literacy efforts. The IPF was established in 1982 as the charitable arm of the Illinois Press Association. Its news service, Capitol News Illinois, has provided daily coverage of state government for Illinois’ newspapers since it was formed in 2019. The Foundation also sponsors an annual summer journalism workshop for high school students at Eastern Illinois University, scholarships for students in the University of Illinois-Springfield’s Public Affairs Reporting program, and in the fall will award grants to collegiate journalism programs. It also is the funder of a collaborative program between the Illinois Press Association and Our-Hometown, Inc., to provide websites to newspapers with a nonexistent or minimal digital presence.

roughly half of the voting public, and let’s take an assumptive leap here, buying population when they pull up to see your home (Or very possibly not see it)? True story: I have literally had a Chicago Bears fan walk out of a Packer Fans home because of the flags, pennants and contraband. Silly right? People are passionate. Don’t give them a reason to be passionate against your home before they even set foot in it. As a seller, you want to try to appeal to 100% of the buyers in your price range. While 100% is not realistic, do not give any one person (it only takes one) a reason to walk away without giving your property a fair shake. With cryptocurrencies so much in the news, you might be wondering if you should invest in them. But “invest” may not be the right word – because, in many ways, cryptocurrencies, or “crypto” for short, are more speculation than investment. But what’s really the difference between a speculator and an investor? Probably the main factor is the differing views of time. A true investor is in it for the long term, building a portfolio that, over many years, can eventually provide the financial resources to achieve important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But speculators want to see results, in the form of big gains, right now – and they’re often willing to take big risks to achieve these outcomes. There’s also the difference in knowledge. Investors know that they’re buying shares of stock in a company that manufactures products or provides services. But many speculators in cryptocurrency don’t fully comprehend what they’re buying – because crypto just isn’t that easy to understand. Cryptocurrency is a digital asset, and cryptocurrency transactions only exist as digital entries on a blockchain, with the “block” essentially being just a collection of information, or digital ledgers. But even knowing this doesn’t necessarily provide a clear picture to many of those entering the crypto world. In addition to time and understanding, two other elements help define cryptocurrency’s speculative nature: Volatility – Cryptocurrencies are subject to truly astonishing price swings, with big gains followed by enormous losses – sometimes within a matter of hours. What’s behind this type of volatility? Actually, several factors are involved. For one thing, the price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies depends heavily on supply and demand – and the

demand can skyrocket when media outlets and crypto “celebrities” tout a particular offering. Furthermore, speculators will bet on crypto prices moving up or down, and these bets can trigger a rush on buying and selling, again leading to the rapid price movements. And many purchasers of crypto, especially young people, want to see big profits quickly, so when they lose large amounts, which is common, they often simply quit the market, contributing to the volatility. Lack of regulation – When you invest in the traditional financial markets, your transactions are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the firms with which you invest are typically overseen by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Other agencies are also involved in regulating various investments. These regulating bodies work to ensure the basic fairness of the financial markets and to prevent and investigate fraud. But cryptocurrency exchanges are essentially unregulated, and this lack of oversight has contributed to the growth of “scam” exchanges, crypto market manipulation, excessive trading fees and other predatory practices. This “Wild West” scenario should be of concern to anyone putting money in crypto. The cryptocurrency market is still relatively new, and it’s certainly possible that, in the future, crypto can become more of an investment and less of a speculation. In fact, Congress is actively considering ways to regulate the cryptocurrency market. But for now, caveat emptor – “let the buyer beware.” This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Patrick Zamkin 18735 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL 60430, (708) 798-9066. MIKE BUDER Real estate and politics just don’t mix. With the mid-term election season upon us, those sellers and soon-to-be sellers out there need to take a moment to think it over before they put or allow to be put a political sign in their front yard next to their “for sale” sign. I can speak from experience – real estate and politics don’t mix! Now don’t get me wrong…do exercise your right to support the candidate or political party that you want to win the election. Just don’t do it in the front yard of the house you are trying to sell. This has nothing to do with whom you support, why or for how long. This has to do with: do you want to do everything you can to sell your home and receive the most favorable terms in the offers? This is not a tirade about political correctness, or who is left, right or wrong. It has to do with looking at the basic political leanings of the U.S. voting public over the last two national elections. In both, the American people voted 48% one way and 46% the other way. So ask yourself this question: do you really want to alienate

Crypto: Investment or speculation?

FSSA encourages Hoosiers to participate in survey to measure addiction treatment, recovery resources in Indiana The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction today announced the launch of the Recovery Capital Index, designed to measure the sum of resources necessary for an individual to initiate and sustain recovery from addiction and to help track the overall recovery capital of the state and communities. “People in recovery have been telling us for decades that there is more to recovery than just maintaining sobriety,” said Jay Chaudhary, DMHA director. “A well-rounded, fulfilling life is the key to a thriving recovery. The Recovery Capital Index will help the state measure the quality of life for Hoosiers in recovery and ensure that Indiana remains a great place to recover.” Recovery capital is the overall measure of internal and external resources available to an individual with a substance use disorder to ensure their continual success in recovery. The RCI provides a comprehensive picture of a person’s whole well-being using an online, automated 68-question survey. Generally, the higher the level of recovery capital, the better the chances of someone maintaining success in recovery. The state of Indiana has invested more than $45 million of federal State Opioid Response grant funding over the past four

years to combat the drug epidemic and improve mental health. DMHA plans to use aggregate and geographically analyzed results from the Recovery Capital Index to drive future decisions about funding and resource allocation. Chaudhary said mapping and measuring recovery capital will also allow DMHA to see the effect of its investment and track it over time. To complete the Recovery Capital Index survey, text “RECOVERY” to 833-638-3784. All Hoosiers are encouraged to complete the survey, not just those directly affected by addiction. To help drive participation, Overdose Lifeline, Inc., an Indiana nonprofit dedicated to helping those affected by substance use disorder, will place stickers on over 200 NaloxBox units and 19 naloxone vending machines across the state. The stickers will prompt users to scan the QR code or text “RECOVERY” to 833-638-3784 to access the survey and additional information about naloxone, including training videos. To find a naloxone distribution site near you, visit www.overdoselifeline.org. DMHA has contracted with Commonly Well to administer the survey statewide. Commonly Well is a public benefit company that uses technology and data to help communities and organizations employ well-being initiatives.

RICHARD ZEKVELD Leprosy was a dreaded condition in Bible times. It described a number of contagious skin diseases, including Hansen’s Disease. The isolation was devastating. Lepers were cut off from community, forbidden to attend worship and other group functions. They missed all birthday parties and holiday celebrations. This isolation could last years, even a lifetime. Leviticus 13:45-46 (ESV) instructs, “The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean.’ He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease. He is unclean. He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.” Imagine. Those cured of leprosy were usually described as cleansed, not healed. Leprosy was a powerful visual of sin’s effects on people and on our relationships with God and others. Sin makes us unclean and cuts us off from God and others. Sin is also contagious. Along came Jesus. One day, a desperate leper broke quarantine and threw himself at Jesus’ feet. He said, “I know you can cleanse me if you want to.” Jesus did not rebuke him. Jesus did not recoil from him. Jesus said, “I am willing. Be clean.” Immediately, the man was cleansed. Restored to enjoy life in community again. One more thing: Jesus reached out and touched the man. Normally, uncleanness is contagious. But Jesus reversed that flow. Jesus’ incarnation was all about Jesus getting close enough to us to touch us. To do so, he had to immerse himself in our unclean and broken mess. He had to absorb it and even die for it to cleanse us from it. When we run to Jesus with our sin, his touch makes us clean. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

IL Shatters Record for Film Cook with Heart Health in Mind Revenues with $630 Million in Economic Impact in 2021 Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot today announced that projected film production revenue in 2021 hit a record high of $630 million, shattering pre-pandemic levels in 2019 by $70 million. Film production revenues are the costs associated with film, television, streaming, and digital media, which have steadily increased over the past 10 years. Additionally, film permits issued by the City of Chicago have also reached pre-pandemic levels. “Illinois has always played a special role in the zeitgeist of American culture, and as a state, we’re proud to be on full display during what has become a golden age of film and television,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “The fact that we have surpassed pre-pandemic levels speaks to the strength of our high-quality filming facilities, locations and initiatives like the film Production Tax Credit.” In addition to film revenues statistics, which are collected by the state as part of the Illinois Film Production Tax Credit, the Chicago Film Office at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) recorded gains in the number of permits administered. Additionally, in 2021, Chicago Film Office launched a new “Chicago Made” initiative to strengthen Chicago’s TV and film industry — including a workforce development program and public awareness campaign based on recommendations from the City of Chicago’s COVID-19 Recovery Task Force. “Chicago’s TV and film industry is globally renowned and continues to generate significant economic and cultural gains for our city,” said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Our forward-thinking Chicago Film Office is building the infrastructure with initiatives such as the ‘Chicago Made’ workforce program that

will continue to open doors for our residents and deepen investments in our communities.” In addition to major prime-time programs such as NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago PD” being renewed for an additional season, 2021 also brought new TV productions like “Shining Girls” from Apple TV+ and “61st Street” from AMC Studios. Major high-profile TV productions and movies were also filmed in Chicago suburbs and rural areas, including HBO’s critically acclaimed series, “Somebody Somewhere,” which was filmed in Lockport. Moreover, 2021 brought new studios to the greater Northeast region of Illinois, such as Legendary Television which filmed “Paper Girls” and “Lightyears” for Amazon Studios primarily on location outside of Chicago. “In addition to film revenue, every filming project spurs economic development in communities by increasing foot traffic to local restaurants to recruiting local extras and bringing recognition to local landmarks — shown to audiences across the globe,” said Sylvia I. Garcia, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), which houses the Illinois Film Office. “Every TV and film project here in Illinois brings a flurry of economic activity to our state,” said Sylvia I. Garcia, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, which houses the Illinois Film Office. “Every production creates a multiplier effect by increasing foot traffic to local stores and restaurants, recruiting local extras, and hiring our talented crews — and then by making our incredible Illinois landmarks well known to audiences across the globe.”

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be difficult or require you to take favorite meals off your family’s menu. In fact, making smart choices when cooking at home can give you more control over the types of tasty, heart-healthy dishes you put on the table. High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease and stroke, with about 38% of American adults diagnosed with high cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. These cooking tips can help you prepare heart-healthy meals that could help improve cholesterol levels by reducing excess saturated fat and trans fat. Cook Fresh Vegetables the Heart-Healthy Way Roasting, steaming, grilling or baking can help bring out the natural flavors of vegetables. Adding herbs and spices can also help make veggies tastier, including combinations like basil with tomatoes, oregano with zucchini, dill with green beans or rosemary with peas and cauliflower. Reduce Saturated Fat in Meat and Poultry The amount of saturated fat in meats can vary widely, depending on the cut and how it’s prepared. Opt for poultry and fish over red meat and look for lean cuts of meat with minimal visible fat, which should be trimmed away before cooking. Also limit processed meats such as sausage, bologna, salami and hot dogs, which are often high in calories, saturated fat and sodium. Use Liquid Vegetable Oils in Place of Solid Fats Some fats are better for you than others. Liquid vegetable oils such as canola, safflower, sunflower, soybean and olive oil can often be used instead of solid fats, such as butter, lard or shortening. If you must use margarine, try the soft or liquid kind. Find more heart-healthy recipes and tips for lowering cholesterol at heart.org/cholesterol.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I want to sell the property I have occupied for 25 years. I had 100 amp service installed and recently a new furnace and air conditioner. My insurance company now says the wiring is not up to standard so they will not insure a purchaser. Can they do this? Answer: Your insurance company has provided coverage to you for 24 years -- but that does not mean they are obligated to provide coverage for anyone else, perhaps someone with a bad claims history. As well, an insurance company is not required to provide coverage for properties which do not meet underwriting standards. As to the matter of whether you have adequate electrical capacity, that’s a fair question. With the increasing use of appliances and computers, homes tend to consume more electrical power than in the past. Older homes, in many cases, should have more power. By any chance, did you increase the capacity of your heating and cooling systems? Have you expanded the house? In such situations it may be that additional electrical service is

appropriate. Your next step should be to contact the local building inspector for your community. Ask them to look at the property to determine if your system meets the code. If yes, get a letter from the building inspector so you have proof for the insurance company (and any buyer) that you have met the existing standard. If no, you must upgrade your system. As to buyers, they have a fair and understandable expectation that a property is insurable. For this reason, you must resolve this question before you sell the home, otherwise you will have to disclose the problem to purchasers. That disclosure may trigger a demand for a discount -- enough money to upgrade the system. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? June Dairy Month spotlights a resilient industry Things are generally looking up for milk producers this year after a long stretch of economic challenges. USDA recently forecast average milk prices for 2022 at $25.75 per hundredweight for all milk, $22.75 for Class III and $23.80 for Class IV. If realized, the prices would be up from $5 to $7 per hundredweight compared to last year. Tasha Bunting, Illinois Farm Bureau associate director of commodities and livestock programs who manages the Illinois Milk Producers Association (IMPA), discussed the state of the industry and promotional work taking place as part of June Dairy Month. “Stronger prices are starting to come back. So, that’s certainly helpful to our dairy farmers in Illinois,” Bunting said. “We have definitely seen a shrinkage of the number of dairy farms the last several years.” The number of licensed dairy farms in the U.S. contracted from 70,375 in 2003 to 31,657 in 2020, the American Farm Bureau Federation reported. Illinois has about 450 Grade A dairy farms with a total herd around 81,000 milk cows following a multi-year stretch of consolidation. “Fortunately, our cow numbers aren’t shrinking quite as drastically,” Bunting said. “What that tells us is our farms are getting a little larger. And with that comes different efficiencies and ways to utilize those scales of economies to maybe get a better price for feed or inputs they need.” June Dairy Month officially began in 1939 as an effort to promote sales during the annual spring flush of milk production and celebrate an industry that was facing economic struggles, which many farmers can relate to today. “June Dairy Month is really a time dairy associations and dairy men and women throughout the U.S. promote and highlight the different products available and the headway all our farmers made on improving the industry,” Bunting said. IMPA will promote information about the dairy industry and provide dairy-related recipes at its website, www.illinoismilk.org, and Facebook page throughout the month. IMPA to host Dairy Tech Tour The association will also host its annual Dairy Tech Tour July 14 to highlight the latest

WOODROW WILCOX On June 2, 2022, I met with two Polish speaking clients in my office. Both could speak some English, too. But the client with the problem was more limited in English. His friend, another client, accompanied him. She was the widow of another Polish speaking client that I had helped years ago. She was much stronger in English and made it easier for me to help her friend – our client with the problem. Together, we made phone calls to Medicare and to medical billers. The source of the problem was that our client switched from one Medicare supplement insurance company to another on 01/01/2022. Medicare did not update its files for about ten weeks. Medicare was not forwarding all the claims to the correct, new insurance company. I wrote letters to each of the medical billing firms explaining that if the balances were not paid by the time they got my letter, it meant that the correct secondary insurer never got the claims. happened, I asked them to send the essential claim information to the correct insurance company and then I gave the proper address for that. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. I spent over two hours helping the client and it did not cost him anything. This insurance agency is proud of its reputation for giving this high level of customer service to our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this kind of great service to you, why not switch to use our insurance agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Agency in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

advancements in the industry and give dairy farmers a chance to network. The Dairy Tech Tour will be held at Beer’s Robo Holsteins Dairy Farm near Mascoutah. “That farm uses robotic milkers and, from what I understand, it’s one of the first in the state to put robotic milkers in place,” Bunting said. “We’re going to talk to them about what they’ve learned the last 11 years and how that experience has gone. “It (the dairy tour) is always a great time for our dairy farmers and those in the industry to connect.” Dairy output, export opportunities grow While the number of U.S. dairy farms decreased the past 20 years, the amount of milk produced by the industry actually increased 37% since 2001 due in part to improved efficiencies and genetics. That not only reduced the industry’s footprint, but also positions it to meet growing demand around the world. Long-term global dairy consumption is projected to rise while the two largest suppliers, the European Union and New Zealand, face structural constraints that could limit the ability to significantly increase milk output in those places. The U.S. is better positioned than any other country to grow milk and dairy production in a sustainable manner that meets rising global demand, if the industry continues to invest in exports, noted Krysta Harden, president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council. The U.S. is the third-largest dairy exporter in the world with about 17% of its production shipped to other countries. USDA projects the industry could produce 226.7 billion pounds of milk this year, up from 226.3 billion last year. The U.S. dairy industry also managed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% during a recent period of increased output (2002-17) and remains committed to reducing water use, improving water quality and achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. The Towle Theater to present the hilarious musical, Reefer Madness

The Towle Theater is proud to present the third show in their 2022 season. Reefer Madness is a musical comedy by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney and is directed by Towle Theater Managing Director, Jeff Casey with Musical Direction by Ron Attreau and Choreography by Colin Funk. Reefer Madness is sponsored by Calumet College of St. Joseph. The 2022 Season is sponsored by Leon Dombrowski and Seda Turan and Accucraft Imaging. Reefer Madness is inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name. This raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-incheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. The Towle Theater is pleased to welcome back Ryan Alan Jones (Chicago) last seen in A Fabulous 50’s Christmas, Sarah Jean Mergener (Chicago) last seen in Play Dates. Jim LaPietra (Berwyn, IL) last seen in A Fabulous 50’s Christmas, Mandi Corrao (Chicago) last seen in Miracle on 34th Street, A Live Musical Radio Play and Nikki Dizon (Lockport, IL) last seen in Night Tide. The Towle welcomes newcomers Geon Ruffin (Willowbrook, IL), David Blakeman (Chicago), Amanda Donohoe (Chicago), Autumn Christensen (Chicago), Lili Galluzzo (Chicago), Adonis Clayborne (Alsip, IL) and Declan Durr (Westmont, IL). Reefer Madness runs July 8-10, 15-17, 22-24. Performances on Fridays and Saturdays are at 8pm and Sundays are at 2pm. The box office opens 1 hour prior to performance time. Tickets are only $21 and must be paid for in advance are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Group rates are available. There is no late seating. Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to curtain. All guests who feel more comfortable wearing masks are strongly encouraged to do so. However, due to the decline in covid-19 case numbers, the Towle Theater is no longer requiring proof of vaccination or masks. Our board and staff will continue to evaluate on a show by show basis. The Towle Theater is located in beautiful downtown Hammond at 5205 Hohman Avenue. Parking is available just off Fayette Street and only steps away from our alley entrance and across Hohman Avenue from the front entrance.
