Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart launched today a new Community Resource Center site where the public can walk in and secure assistance with a wide range of social services, filling a critical need in the community. The Community Resource Center (CRC) is open to anyone and helps individuals connect to mental health assistance, substance use disorder treatment, housing assistance, food, education, clothing, and employment, among other resources. Trained CRC staff serve as comprehensive service navigators by understanding the client’s problems, identifying solutions, and working to overcome barriers that often emerge in seeking help, especially among individuals facing multiple challenges. CRC clinicians will be available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2418 W. Division Street in Chicago, the site of a former city mental health clinic. “There is nothing more frustrating than wanting help and not knowing where to start. You try to get help, don’t get anywhere and just give up,” Sheriff Dart said. “The CRC is here to help navigate those systems and ensure individuals get the help they need. Ultimately our goal here is creating safe communities. When individuals are connected to critical services and are receiving the help they need, it reduces the likelihood they’ll encounter law enforcement.”
Nearly 1 million people in Illinois with a mental illness go without help, according to Mental Health America. Moreover, nearly 700,000 people statewide with a substance use disorder don’t receive treatment, according to the National Survey of Drug Use and Health. At a press conference Wednesday, Sheriff Dart was joined by Alexa James, CEO of NAMI Chicago. “We continue to be encouraged that the Sheriff and his staff respond to gaps in our mental health and re-entry systems,” James said. “Case management, support and care coordination continues to be an area that lacks investment. We have seen increasing need for social services at NAMI Chicago, and value the partnership and commitment to supporting wholistic wellness for our community members.” CRC opened in the fall of 2020. Due to the pandemic, most of CRC’s work was done virtually. To date, more than 4,800 people have accepted CRC assistance. The community site will allow for more people to access CRC’s help and will particularly benefit those who work better in person instead of by phone. CRC staff will also continue to assist people over the phone and online. CRC staff may be reached at (773) 405-5116 and ccso.resourcecenter@ccsheriff.org. Those seeking assistance may also visit www.cookcountysheriff.org for an online submission form.
SSC Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program Seeks Tutors and Learners South Suburban College (SSC) is seeking tutors and learners to participate in the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-onone tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading and communication skills. Community residents are welcome to volunteer as tutors or encourage others to take advantage of this free program. Illiteracy is debilitating in many ways for adults who never received proper instruction. Adults unable to read experience difficulty completing daily tasks often. They are also at a disadvantage while competing in the job market. New tutor training sessions will take place at the Main Campus in South Holland on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 12 through July 28 from 3–5 p.m. Tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Training is also available in an online format. Once certified, tutors will continue to receive free professional development services through this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for employment, scholarships, educational opportunities and more. Once certified, SSC’s volunteer literacy tutors visit adult learners at locations within or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring is flexibly scheduled based on the availability of tutors, learners and
tutoring sites. Tutoring sites have been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Public Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Blue Island Public Library; Dixmoor Public Library; Tinley Park Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. The SSC Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. For more information or to register, please contact David Stephens, Adult Literacy Grants Manager, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email DStephens@ssc.edu. The South Suburban College Main Campus is located at 15800 South State Street South Holland, Illinois. Our mission is to Serve our Students and the Community through lifelong learning.

On June 21, 2022, I helped a widow with a bill from the final days of her husband’s life. The bill was not being paid. Their agent alerted me to the problem and provided some papers to help me research the problem for the widow. To help the widow, I asked her to join me on some phone calls. One was to the Medicare supplement insurance company and one was to Medicare. She granted me permission to speak and question on behalf of her and her late husband. We tried to phone the medical service provider, but all we got was a recording telling us to leave a message. Instead of leaving a message, I typed a letter. With some editing to protect the privacy of our clients, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm that sent the bill for $811.28. The family of our client brought to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. Today, with the widow on the phone to grant me permission to speak and question on behalf of the family, we phoned both the secondary insurer and Medicare about your bill. We requested Medicare Summary Notice forms about the claims. Those should arrive in about fifteen business days. The surviving family will bring those to me to compare with your bill. But already, I expect to find some problems with your bill. The Medicare representative with whom we spoke told us that one or more of the services on the bill were never

which to extort the seller. There is a big difference between presenting a reasonable list of repair requests, consistent with the property’s asking price, and issuing a manifesto of demands. Negotiations should transpire until a mutually satisfying result is achieved. Defects involving electrical wiring & gas fixtures are conditions that need to be addressed, and most sellers understand this. Repair requests involving significant problems of this nature are usually regarded as reasonable and acceptable. Common conditions such as gate repairs, door adjustments, etc, are included in an inspection report purely for disclosure purposes. These are not supposed to be part of the buyer demands. Too many transactions fall through because buyers use a home inspection report as a reimbursement of grievances. My recommendation is to weigh the importance of every disclosure in the report, with the understanding that there is no such thing as a perfect house. Question: During my home inspection, my inspector found a long list of problems with the house, including defects with the electrical, furnace and a whole lot more. But when I presented the sellers with the report and demanded repair of each and every item, they broke off negotiations and refused to sell me the house. What’s the use of a home inspection if all it does is blow the deal or force me to buy the house in as-is condition? Answer: First, no one is forcing you to buy the house. Your inspector has provided you with pertinent information. What you do with that knowledge is a matter of choice, to be exercised with prudence and thoughtful consideration. Second, common sense dictates that if the home has problems with the electrical wiring and furnace, the inspection report for which you paid hundreds of dollars may have saved you thousands. Lastly, the purpose of a home inspection is to get a clear indication as to the overall quality and general condition of the property. Upon viewing the report, you need to make some reasonable assessments: Is this house still worth buying? What repair items are considered immediate structural or safety issues that sellers should be expected to address? What items should be regarded as routine maintenance, not requiring immediate attention? The inspection report is not a shopping list of demands with
filed with Medicare. The representative was XXXXX XXXX who works at a Medicare call center in Kansas. I do not know that is true. But it is true that the Medicare representative told us that. Also, there seems to be some confusion of which medical service provider gave which service. Your billing the surviving family long before the Medicare Summary Notice forms were sent so that the bill can’t be compared to Medicare’s ruling on each claim seems extremely unfair. Do not demand payment until the federal documents have been received and some time has been allowed for review. All the help that I gave the widow was FREE OF CHARGE. This agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients when a Medicare related billing problem occurs. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an agency that does? This one does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in medical billing. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

SOUTHEAST VIETNAM VETS MEET WITH DR. WILLIE WILSON: Pictured at St.. Simeon Church on Chicago’s East Side prior to a meeting with the philanthropist/candidate are Jose Joe Cruz, Omar Medellin. Tony Rebeles, Larry Kutz and Joe Sanchez. Dr. Wilson asked to meet with veterans as he feels they are unrepresented with city health and wellbeing services. ***
SSEVV HOST ANNUAL STEAK FRY AT THE SHED: Pictured enjoying the annual Steak Fry in honor of the late, great, Rene Nawodylo, co-founder and longtime proprietor of The Shed, Chicago, are Anita Chico (also celebrating her birthday) Leonore Jr and 95 year old Leonore Sr and Bob from Loncar’s who provided the delicious fried chicken! ***
SOUTHEAST VIETNAM VETS WITH DR. WILLIE WILSON--Philanthropist, and entrepreneur Dr Willie Wilson of Chicago hosted a town hall meeting at St. Simeon Church on the East Side on June 22nd, 2022. He is running for elected office there and wanted to hear what locals had to say on the current state of affairs as concerns the city and it’s environs. One of the groups he was eager to meet were military veterans who he considers “under represented” as regards health care and support in the city. Dr. Wilson is pictured here with members of the SSEVV: They are Omar Medellin, Joe Sanchez, President Larry Kutz, Jose Joe Cruz and Tony Rebeles, treasurer. Dr Wilson also listened as candidates for local offices made short speeches and enjoyed a buffet of delicacies created by local culinary students and their instructor Culinary Arts Instructor Gloria Hafer. Readers will remember recent media reports of Dr. Wilson as the generous soul who recently poured more than $5 million dollars into the gas tanks of needy south and west side Chicagoans. His plans are to do more of that this week in different areas. The short program Wednesday consisted in part of Dr. Wilson telling his own impoverished story of life in Louisiana sleeping 5 kids to a bed, unsure where his next meal was coming from and going out on his own at a tender age. Through it all, Dr Wilson says he “never lost his humility or the capacity to understand how hard it is for others or himself to make a future out of nothing.” Dr. Wilson thinks he can do better for all Chicagoans and he is out to prove it! ***
HAIL TO THE GRILLMIESTER AND HIS ASSISTANTS: No Steak Fry is complete without a professional at the Weber Kettles. In this case, Steve Garcia is pictured here with Jesse Gomez and Jose, Joe Cruz. Steve also chefs at the knights of Columbus in Lansing and is a relative of SSEVV Treasurer Tony Rebeles. Some 130 tickets to the event were sold and most of the revelers came out to enjoy the feast which included salads and sweets. Great fun for a great group of Veterans and their families. Next up is the SSEVV Picnic held at the Rod and Gun Club in Hegewisch. Stay tuned for date and time! ***
HAMMOND YOUNGSTERS OFFER FRESH LEMONADE: On a hot day last week, Ella Snyder, 15, Lia Rasmussen, 9, and Ephraim Snyder, 9, posted a sign as they stood on Hohman Avenue pitching their ice cold lemonade. Business was good, according to Ella. “Its hot and people are thirsty,” noted the youthful entrepreneur, “so we did okay!” ***
AND THE WINNER IS.......Debbie Sullivan who holds the winning card that net her the 50/50 pot at the Annual SSEVV Steak Fry at The Shed, Sunday June 26, 2022. Also pictured is SSEVV President Larry Kutz who had just thanked and asked the group to raise a glass in a toast to one of the co-founder’s of the organization and longtime owner of The Shed the late, great Rene’ Nawodylo. ***
CRETE WOMENS CLUB HOST GARDEN WALK: Pictured here in the shade of an umbrella on a hot summer day last week, the ladies took a breather from highlighting their garden walk and participation in the craft fair next to the Crete United Methodist Church. The members include Yvonne Hurlburt, Faire Co-Chair; Linda Tylk, Parliamentarian; Karen Hysell, Garden Walk Co-Chair; and Pat Galata, Garden Walk Co-Chair. ***

RICHARD ZEKVELD I’m still digesting the news. And praising God. Hours ago, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 federal abortion law. This is a landmark civil rights moment in our nation’s history – one I would not have thought possible ten years ago. This ruling returns abortion law to individual states. Today, I thank God for the entrenched, vibrant network of pregnancy care centers that cover our land. This includes our local ministry, PASS (Pregnancy Aid South Suburbs). These frontline ministers of mercy come alongside expecting mothers and fathers, some of them in troubling circumstances, to resource and walk with them. They also counsel and support women dealing with the trauma of past abortions. More than ever, they need our encouragement and support. I thank God for grandparents and other extended family members who step in to care for children when the parents of those children cannot. More than ever, they need our encouragement and support. I thank God for individuals and families who open their hearts and homes to foster and adopt children in crisis. More than ever, they need our encouragement and support. I thank God for communities who enfold struggling moms and dads in community to provide networks of spiritual, financial, emotional, and relational support. More than ever, they need our encouragement and support. Today’s Supreme Court ruling reminds us it is not enough to be against abortion. The church of Jesus needs to embody the pro-Life love of Jesus in sacrificial, incarnational, relational ways to be God’s life-giving alternative to abortion in our land. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:16, NIV). Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
ESPECIALLY YOURS.
Agent In Training MIKE BUDER Everyone is a “newbie” at some time. We see managers training the teenager at Taco Bell or the “student driver” signs atop of cars. But when was the last time you saw a “real estate professional in training” badge on a real estate agent or loan officer? Never! A good real estate company will hold an agents hand during the “baby” stage. And a good lender will make sure a complete mortgage application is completed for a new loan officer. Sadly what often takes place is a “sink or swim” training method and some poor soul’s home purchase is the training ground. We’ve seen this with both newbie real estate professionals and often with the “I’m using a relative” scenario. Is it a fair question to ask a professional how many transactions they have completed lately?… this year?…ever? ABSOLUTELY! However, as a homebuyer, working with a new agent or loan officer isn’t necessarily a curse. Just because a real estate professional is new to the business doesn’t mean that they have to be new to professionalism! Indeed, some new real estate professionals are years ahead of some of the “dead wood” agents that have been around for years. If a newbie

Mrvan Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade A07377-21Fa-5x7.75.indd 1
11/2/21 4:11 PM
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan released the following statement on the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. “Today’s lamentable decision by the Supreme Court reflects the very real consequences of our elections. The decision to become a parent is one of the most important decisions any person can make, and it should be made by women, their families, their faith, and medical professionals, not the government or elected politicians. I stand with every woman today, and will continue to fight for a country in which all women, including my two daughters, have the legal right to access safe reproductive care.”
The rolling back of women’s reproductive health protections is a disaster for Hoosiers, said Destiny Wells, the Democratic Party candidate for Indiana secretary of state. And it should be a rallying cry for voters, Wells added. “Women dying is non-negotiable for me,” Wells said. “I’m a woman candidate. I need to make sure women are being represented at the ballot box. We don’t have a voting system in place that allows us to be truly represented. If we did, we wouldn’t be talking about life-saving care being outlawed. A majority of Hoosiers oppose banning abortion.” Following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and the decimating action on Roe v. Wade, Wells said Hoosiers need to take steps to ensure that the right to vote and have their viewpoints represented does not continue to be compromised as it has under 30 years of Republican control of the Indiana Secretary of State’s office. “Reproductive freedom is reproductive health care,” she said. “What it means for Hoosier women at large is no longer having access to health care that keeps them both healthy and alive. It’s also how they are affected economically and socially as a citizen. They’re carrying the burden of raising our future, but in doing this, they’re being asked to sacrifice the future they might have for Republican gamesmanship.” This past weekend the GOP convention attendees taunted Governor Holcomb as his appointed incumbent Holli Sullivan lost her election bid as Secretary of State. Governor Holcomb needs a political win with conservative voters, and he may just get that at the July 6 legislative special session he recently called. Wells stated, “The livelihood of Hoosier women shouldn’t be held hostage to the political ambitions of one man – that’s not a representative democracy.” Two-thirds of Americans polled in May did not support overturning Roe v. Wade, NPR has reported. The right to preserve access to women’s reproductive health options is “not only applicable to women in childbearing years,” Wells said. “Once you pull the thread of Roe v. Wade on the quilt of privacy rights, it all starts to unravel. You lose this blanket of privacy rights that affects people. It’s a 50-year precedent that opens the gate of going after other privacy rights. It has huge implications. It’s not just about women’s reproductive freedom.”

has a strong support system with their broker, you can feel confident they should do a fair job. If they lack support AND they are green, then you are taking a big chance with them handling one of the largest transactions of your life. Today’s real estate transactions are highly detailed. Home buyers and especially home sellers should never be the training ground for a new agent or loan officer to learn the ropes on their own. As a home buyer/seller, do not be afraid to ask questions upfront and put the professional you choose to work with to the test. Any professional worth your time will welcome the questions and concerns. And that is a fact, because in such a situation, the professional has the opportunity to shine, which will help all parties understand one another and work better together. Next week, we observe Independence Day, an opportunity to celebrate all the liberties we enjoy in this country. Of course, there are different types of freedoms – such as financial freedom, which can open the doors to many other opportunities. What steps can you take to gain your financial independence? Here are a few suggestions: Save, invest … and repeat. There’s really no shortcut to achieving financial freedom – you do have to save and invest for many years. And that means you should take full advantage of the opportunities available to you. If you have a 401(k) or similar retirement plan at work, try to put in as much as you can afford each year, and when your salary goes up, increase your contributions. Even if you have a 401(k), you may also be eligible to fund an IRA. Both a 401(k) and an IRA offer tax benefits and an array of investment options, so they are powerful retirement savings vehicles. Invest for growth. How much you invest is obviously a key factor in reaching your financial freedom. But how you invest is also important. If you’re going to accumulate the resources you need to retire comfortably and meet your other financial goals, you will need to devote a reasonable percentage of your investment dollars to growth-oriented vehicles, including stocks and stock-based mutual funds. Of course, these investments will fluctuate in value, so you’ll need to be prepared to accept a certain level of risk. Your individual risk tolerance will help determine how much of your portfolio should be devoted to growth investments. Put financial windfalls to work. Whenever you receive a fi-

Mayor Lightfoot and First Lady Eshleman Announce Series Of Events To Commemorate The 50Th Anniversary Of The Passage Of Title Ix Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and First Lady Amy Eshleman today announced Chicago Title IX Week, a series of events to honor the 50th anniversary of passing Title IX of the Higher Education Act. Events will take place July 17 through July 23. Highlights of Chicago Title IX Week include: • The Title IX Hero Awards recognizing sports icon and equality champion Billie Jean King, two-time WNBA champion and sports broadcaster Candace Parker, and head coach of DePaul Blue Demons women’s basketball team Doug Bruno for their work advancing opportunities for women and girls. • A public panel with Olympic gold medalist and Chicago Blackhawks player development coach Kendall Coyne Schofield, former Notre Dame head women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw, and USA Today sports columnist and commentator Christine Brennan. • Activities throughout the week with the Chicago Park District and a Title IX resource guide by the Chicago Public Library. • A special 30th anniversary of A League of Their Own film screening at Gallagher Way. • A screening of Candace Parker’s documentary produced by her company Baby Hair Productions called Title IX: 37 Words That Changed America. • A full slate of events in partnership with organizations across Chicago. More information will be available at chi.gov/chicagotitleixweek. The passage of Title IX on June 23, 1972, was the first comprehensive federal law that prohibited discrimination based on gender, pregnancy status, sexual orientation, and gender identity within an education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. After 50 years, this landmark legislation has had a lasting impact on expanding opportunities for women and girls in education and athletics in Chicago and across the country. “The passage of Title IX is particularly important to me, as it allowed my wife, Amy, and I to participate in sports and thrive. Because of this, we are excited to be able to mark this crucial milestone, acknowledge the achievements of these three sports icons and recognize their impact on the lives of women and girls,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Today, Title IX continues to protect women and girls from sex-based discrimination in any school or any other educa-
tion program that receives funding from the federal government — making it a critical piece of historic legislation. As Chicago gets ready to celebrate Title IX’s 50th Anniversary, Amy and I encourage residents to celebrate how far we have come since its passage while acknowledging the work ahead to fully achieve equality for women and girls across Chicago.” To honor Title IX’s 50 years of achievements, the City of Chicago will award Billie Jean King with the Title IX Legend Award, Candace Parker with the Title IX Leader Award and Doug Bruno with the Title IX Champion Award. These honorees have led Chicago by example through leadership, participation, and their continued work to uplift women and girls on and off the playing field. “The passage of Title IX in 1972 made a difference in my life and in the lives of women, girls, and families throughout the nation. It is an honor to join Mayor Lightfoot in celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of the most important pieces of legislation of the 20th century,” said Title IX Legend Awardee Billie Jean King. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without Title IX, so receiving the Title IX Leader Award in my hometown of Chicago is an honor. While we still have a way to go to achieve complete equity in sports, we’ve made enormous progress thanks to all the individuals who have paved the way for future generations to succeed,” said Title IX Leader Awardee Candace Parker. “I want to thank the City of Chicago for this distinctive honor. The opportunity for a young girl to be educated through athletics is not based on some quota, but it is a civil right. Title IX is a federal civil rights law, not just some rule,” said Doug Bruno, Title IX Champion Awardee. “While we have made significant strides in addressing gender inequality since Title IX was enacted 50 years ago, inequalities remain all- too prevalent in our country. The battle for gender equality is a fight that must be waged every day.” Chicago Title IX Week is made possible through the support of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Fire, Laura Ricketts and Brooke Skinner Ricketts, One Chicago Fund, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, Chicago Red Stars, Chicago Sky, and Chicago White Sox.
nancial windfall, such as a bonus from your employer, a tax refund or even an inheritance, consider putting some of it to work in your investment portfolio. Over time, these windfalls can add up. Reduce your debts. It may be easier said than done, but try to reduce, or eliminate, as many debts as you can. The less money you have to pay each month on your debts, the more you’ll have available to save and invest. Of course, some debts, such as your mortgage, can’t be easily erased, but if you can find ways to cut down on spending, you may be surprised at how much progress you can make toward debt reduction. Prepare for the unexpected. Life is unpredictable – and some unforeseen events could threaten your ability to achieve, and maintain, your financial independence. For example, if you were unable to work for a while due to illness or injury, you might be forced to dip into your savings and long-term investments just to help meet your cost of living. You can help protect yourself from this risk by building an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. And you may want to consult with a financial professional to learn about other protection strategies. It will take a concerted effort to reach your financial independence – but, like all freedoms, it offers immense benefits. The Spirit of ’76: Protecting us against the Putin Playbook By KEN PAULSON Director, Free Speech Center As we gather to celebrate Independence Day, it’s a good time to reflect on how our most fundamental freedoms have served this nation well. It’s an even better time to think about what would happen if those liberties were taken away. Sadly, the latter doesn’t take much imagination in 2022. Your closest video screen will show you scenes of Russian troops pummeling Ukraine with the support of a majority of the Russian people. The Russian public has been told that their country is doing noble work ferreting out “Nazis” and that the West is engaged in its usual persecution of Russia and its people. Surveys say most Russians believe it. In times of war, people always want to see their government as the good guys, but it’s still a little hard to grasp how that many people can be so thoroughly misled. That’s the power of the Vladimir Putin playbook. The Russian president quickly and with little opposition eliminated the freedoms of speech and press. First, Putin bandied around allegations of “fake news,” undermining domestic news media that had far more latitude than their Soviet Union counterparts. Then he coordinated a plan with the national legislature to pass a law imprisoning those who “lied” about the war, including even calling it a war. Russian media of integrity had to close, and international journalists in Russia had to temper their reporting. That left the internet as the one avenue for Russians to learn the truth about their country’s misdeeds. Putin then banned social media outlets and sharply limited access to international news sites. In short order, the Russian people were isolated, left to believe the lies of their government. It took just weeks for Putin to wipe out freedoms of press, speech and dissent. Could anything like that ever happen in the United States? As unlikely as it might seem, there are some areas of concern. After all, over the past 60 years, certain presidents from both parties have been known to mislead the public about the purpose and progress of wars. And the use of “fake news” claims to evade responsibility began with politicians in this country, only to be adopted by totalitarian leaders around the globe. Today there are active efforts to overturn New York Times v. Sullivan, the 1964 Supreme Court decision that made investigative reporting viable in the United States. And there are many politicians, again of both parties, who
want to control how private social media companies are run. Do I believe that America could fall victim to something resembling the Putin playbook? No. But it’s also no longer unthinkable. It’s not a coincidence that the first step wouldbe dictators take is to shut down the press. That eliminates questions and accountability, both of which are anathema to those who abuse power. There are some today who choose not to be informed, saying the media are biased. Well, there are tens of thousands of media outlets in this country, including manipulative cable channels, partisan sites that masquerade as news providers and those sites that would entice us with clickbait. But there are also many core news organizations of integrity, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, PBS and the very newspaper you’re reading right now. They’re the ones we need to support with readership and subscriptions. From the very beginning of this nation, Americans understood the importance of a free press aggressively reporting on people in power. In an era when newspapers were fiercely partisan and unfair, that first generation of citizens still insisted on journalists being protected by the First Amendment. That shouldn’t surprise us. After all, the model was right there in 1776 in the document we celebrate this week. The Declaration of Independence called out King George III, reporting a list of injustices perpetrated by the mother country against its colonies. We had “unalienable rights,” it said, and they were being violated. Americans were no longer going to put up with this “long train of abuses and usurpations.” That is the same spirit with which America’s free press has exercised its duties since 1791. Abolitionist newspapers took on slavery, suffragist papers focused on injustices against women and news organizations spanning centuries have reported on scandals, corruption and racial injustice. We live in a highly polarized time, when it’s easy to dismiss the views of those with whom we disagree and deride those who publish the facts we don’t want to acknowledge. We have to take care, though, that our internal political wars don’t turn us away from the core principles contained in the Declaration of Independence. We remain a free people and need to be vigilant in protecting our rights and documenting the abuses in people in power, not just when the other guy’s party is in office. That’s the real spirit of ’76.

Pritzker to Call Special Session on Reproductive Rights Gov. JB Pritzker will call a special session of the General Assembly in the coming weeks to focus on legislation to strengthen women’s access to abortion and other reproductive health services in Illinois. Pritzker made that announcement Friday, just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court released an opinion overturning the landmark 1973 abortion rights case Roe v. Wade. “We knew this day was coming,” Pritzker said at a hastily called news conference in Chicago. “The extremists on the Supreme Court have made an abhorrent decision, one rooted in partisanship, leaving an indelible stain on our nation.” Pritzker had already been scheduled to hold a news conference Friday to highlight legislation he signed recently expanding access to medication that protects against HIV infection. But the Supreme Court’s decision, released shortly after 9 a.m., upended those plans and set off a flurry of reaction, both for and against the ruling. “Today, Illinois Right to Life joins millions of Americans in celebrating the end of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that has denied over 63 million preborn children their most fundamental right: life,” the Illinois Right to Life organization said in a statement. “With today’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, states have regained the ability to protect preborn children and their mothers.” Attorney General Kwame Raoul criticized the decision in a statement. “I am extremely disappointed with today’s Supreme Court decision, which jeopardizes the health, the safety and the lives of millions of women in the United States – especially those who already have the least access to health care and other resources,” he said. “This single decision rolls back 50 years of court precedent and with it, decades of progress toward reproductive autonomy.” Illinois is among the states with laws already on the books protecting access to abortion. In 2018, the state adopted a law allowing public funding of abortion through its Medicaid program. And in 2019, lawmakers passed the sweeping Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, enshrines abortion access as a “fundamental right” in Illinois law. Finally, during last year’s veto session, lawmakers passed a bill repealing the state’s Parental Notice of Abortion law, removing the last legal restriction on abortion in Illinois. Friday’s Supreme Court decision will have no effect on those laws. In fact, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in a concurring opinion, specifically pointed to Illinois and other states as being un-
June 29, 2022
affected by the decision. “Today’s decision therefore does not prevent the numerous States that readily allow abortion from continuing to readily allow abortion,” he wrote. “That includes, if they choose, the (friend of the court) States supporting the plaintiff in this Court: New York, California, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii.” But Illinois’ laws stand in stark contrast to those of some neighboring states that already had so-called “trigger laws” on the books that would either ban or severely restrict access to abortion upon reversal of Roe v. Wade. “Let me make this explicit and clear to women throughout our state, throughout the Midwest and our nation – Illinois will be a safe haven for the exercise of your reproductive rights,” Pritzker said. “In Illinois, Roe v. Wade is still the law and it will remain the law as long as we have a pro-choice legislature and a pro-choice governor.” It wasn’t immediately clear what types of legislation lawmakers would pursue in a special session. One that is likely to come up, though, is House Bill 1464, which prohibit state regulators from revoking or suspending the license of a health care provider solely because they were sanctioned in another state for performing abortions. That measure passed the House this year but requires action in the state Senate. Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie, of Hawthorn Woods, suggested in a news release that Democrats may also try to pass legislation to offer public funding for out-of-state residents to receive abortion services in Illinois. “Right now, Illinoisans can already get an abortion in all nine months of pregnancy for any reason and use taxpayer dollars to pay for it. But that’s not enough,” he said. “Now, they want us to help pay for out-of-state residents to travel to Illinois to receive abortions and even allow non-physicians here to perform them.” The Supreme Court’s decision is also certain to cause political fallout in Illinois because it came just four days before the state’s June 28 primary elections, and it is certain to be a toptier issue going into the Nov. 8 general elections. “For this primary on Tuesday and November’s general election, game on. This is on the ballot,” Sen. Christina Pacione-Zayas said at the news conference.
