Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Wrigley Field is at full capacity now, and last week was my first time enjoying a game that way since before COVID. There were multiple moments that made me feel a type of euphoria that you sports fans out there might know: When the crowd stood to sing the National Anthem, when the pinch hitter crushed a double to break the game open in the late innings, and when the up-and-coming rookie sent a baseball well over the left field wall. At one moment, instead of cheering myself, I just watched the sea of thousands of fans celebrate. It was an experience that brought a tear to my eye. I feel like I belong at Wrigley Field. Two days later, I had a similar euphoric experience. I was standing in my church singing a hymn. As I looked across the congregation, I saw close friends, growing families, people struggling with health issues, people lamenting a loss. Everyone was gathered together to praise and worship God, and there was no place I wanted to be more. I feel like I belong at my church. A much stronger bond connects me with my fellow Christians than the bond that links me to my fellow Cubs fans. As Christians, we pray together, we laugh together, we learn together. We share each other’s burdens and rejoice in each other’s happiness. Christians belong to each other, and more importantly, we belong to God. In Him, we find our true sense of belonging. If you don’t yet know the true sense of belonging that God offers through Jesus Christ, I encourage you to take steps to do so. Place your trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and bask in the glory of truly belonging.

‘YOU CAN’T STOP TIME ACCORDING TO FRED SCHRUM:” Fred took his watch and clock expertise to the Calumet City Historical Society Sunday July 11, 2021. A serious hobby Fred (the immediate past Commander of American Legion Post 697 in Lansing and present CCHS Board Member) has pursued for the past 15 years, brought with him some 20 different clocks and watches and explained the origins and history of each. A member of the NAWCC Peace Pipe Chapter 83, the clock and watch club that meets the 2nd Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the St. John, Indiana Community Center. Fred grew up in Lansing next door to the Amy and Andy VanderAA family. Fred’s Dad was interested in Clocks and the VanderAA’s turned the family on to Zeeland, Michigan and the clock fanciers there. Fred is pictured here holding up a watch he said belonged to his cousin Donald Schrum. Due to the digital age we now live in, members of the audience lamented the fact that students no longer know how to read a clock that is not digital. They don’t know “numerical or roman numerals,” noted one of the audience members, Rich Dominiak of Calumet City. In possession of an almost encyclopedic knowledge of clocks and watches, the speaker concluded his talk with a Q and A and then proceeded to win the 2nd prize offered that day--a charming basket of goodies. First prize of $72 50/50 drawing was won by CCHS President Mike Wolski. ***

SO PROUD OF THE SSEVV ON 4TH OF JULY 2021 IN WHITING: The guys laid a wreath to honor the past, present and active members of the military at the Whiting Soldier’s Memorial, 119th and Schrage Street. Following the ceremony at the Memorial corner, the South Southeast Vite Nam Veterans posted colors at Whiting City Hall down the street where Mayor Steve Spebar offered a short patriotic speech. *** BURNHAM FAMILIES DAY IN LAWHEAD PARK: Hosted by Thornton Township’s Services and Programs, and Frank Zuccarelli, Thornton Township Supervisor, the event, located at 145th and Marquette Avenue, is set for Wednesday July 14, 2021 from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be free games, food, music and activities! We are invited to bring our lawn chairs and join our Burnham neighbors for an afternoon of fun! Festivities will be held rain or shine (unless severe weather conditions prevail.) As a longtime bank customer (even before when the bank was called Citizen’s) our family has done business there as well as in Hegewisch and all the other branches dotted along Northwest Indiana and Illinois. Most recently I had to change my debit card. It was a bit of a hassle due to the fact that the machines which make the cards were not working or rather “being worked on.” As always, my ‘go to’ banker was Cristina who patiently explained that I would have to come back when the machines were up and running. Got my card a few days later, but Cristina made the whole experience so much nicer due to her calm and reassuring demeanor. Nice person doing nice things for others....Thanks so much Cristina! *** CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF DOLTON FIREFIGHTER: Robert Morgan, 50, who devoted almost 21 years to the Dolton Fire Department on July 17, died Wednesday July 7, 2021 while on vacation in the Dominican Republic, according to Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard, who had high praise for his dedication to the Dolton community. Possesed of an adventuresome spirit as a world traveler, Mr. Morgan was a native of Calumet City and graduated from Thornwood High School in South Holland and Western Ilinois University. Mr. Morgan’s mother Sandra Morgan as well as Dolton Fire Chief Pete McCain expressed admiration for the veteran fire engineer, who served “the village of Dolton proudly.” McClain added,”Bobby was a son, a father and a great friend. He was loved by all and will be missed by his first service family.” Mr. Morgan is also survived by a daughter Aliyah. (Thanks to NWI Times for some of this content). ***

Speaking Of Seniors

Minimum Payments = Mega Costs

I WROTE TO HER DOCTOR WOODROW WILCOX On June 11, 2021, I received medical bill information from a 91-year-old client who lives in Whiting, Indiana. She got a medical bill for almost $200 and she wanted to know why. After researching the matter, I wrote to her doctor. With some editing to protect our client’s privacy, here is the letter that I sent to the client’s doctor. The daughter of our client brought to our firm a bill from your firm and a note that you had not yet been paid on a claim for date of service 03/02/2021. You bill sought a balance of $180.51. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that Medicare never sent this claim to it. That is not the fault of our client, her insurance company, or your firm. It is Medicare’s fault. Sadly, the Medicare system of communication breaks down hundreds or thousands of times each day and causes this sort of problem for seniors and their doctors all the time.

The fastest way to fix this problem is for your firm to send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB information that you have regarding this claim directly to the secondary insurer. Thank you for your cooperation. Following here is where to send that information. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency gives free help to our clients who experience a medical bill problem in the Medicare system. It is a way that we show that we really do care about our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service to senior citizen clients, why not switch to an agency that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be purchased at bookstores and online.

Emotionally Attached MIKE BUDER When it’s time to say goodbye to a house you love. I remember being very impressed with the property on my first visit. The 100 year-old farm house shone with careful restoration and charm. The acreage that surrounded it was dotted with heirloom fruit trees and organic pathways winding through a variety of flower and veggie gardens. The owner, and mother of one of my recent clients, wanted my opinion as to its value. True comps were hard to find, but we came up with a plan for pricing. However, after a long interview, we determined she wasn’t emotionally ready to sell. Our relationship developed into a warm friendship, and two years later she finally was ready to say goodbye. Years of taking care of the house on her own (after her husband died) had taken its toll. She longed for a new vision and new adventures. It didn’t take long to get an offer, and fortunately it was a cash buyer with plenty of motivation. The couple, who owned and adjacent property, wanted to buy the house for their daughter and sonin-law. Getting a loan on the property might have been difficult. It was built on a skirted post and pier foundation. In addition, at the

time, there was no heat source to the second floor bedrooms. The process of selling was an emotional one. The property was filled with memories-her children had played in the nearby creek, her daughter’s wedding was held in one of the gardens, a dog was buried underneath a tree in the back yard. At times, it proved difficult to walk that fine line between friendship and a professional relationship. Fortunately, her son and daughter, also both excited for their mom’s freedom from the upkeep of the home, helped through the difficult moments. The children threw a birthday party for their mom, the weekend before she moved out. Guests gathered in the gardens on a warm summer day and enjoyed libations, delicious food, and shared fond stories. It was the perfect time to say goodbye to a well-loved home. NANCY ZEKVELD Have you considered purchasing something on a credit card because you need it or want it right now? Credit cards can serve you well , allowing you to get something now that you don’t have cash for on the spot. They make provision for you to make a purchase in an emergency when you need that furnace fixed now or to replace a tire that has blown on your car. They make provision, but they also come at a price. Consider something as simple as purchasing an electronic device such as a computer with accessories, a television set, or some gadget that comes in at or around $2500. Assume that you use a credit card to make the purchase. Perhaps you do not pay the high end rate of 24.99% on your credit card but you do not have a great rate like 9%; let us assume you have an interest rate of 18%. You have intentions of paying it off, but you know you can fall back to making only the required minimum payment. The true cost of the purchase considers that our interest rate is compounded daily; each day, every day, at the end of the day. The credit card company figures out what your balance is on that $2500 purchase and adds on one day’s worth of interest. The formula for this is to take your interest rate and divide it by the number of days in the year (360), to get the daily rate. Then at the end of the next day, the magic of math is repeated; over and over for each day of the month. For example, day one is the $2500 balance plus one day’s worth of interest but day number two is now the initial purchase and day’s one interest (so you have a “new balance”) which is now used to calculate

the next amount of daily interest calculated to be added on and used as your “new balance”…and so on and so forth. If you are only making the minimum payment every month it will take close to 28 years to pay off that electronic device which most certainly would have stopped working or needed to be replaced well before that time. The electronic device would have cost you close to $8400 dollars after considering the initial purchase plus interest. In summary: A $2500 purchase at 18% daily interest making only the minimum payment would cost you $8400 and take 28 years to pay. Ouch! Maybe you are currently feeling the pain of seemingly endless payments and are overwhelmed with a number of credit card balances or other debts. Financial Advice Column

How Does Social Security Fit into Retirement? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Here’s something to think about: You could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. To meet your income needs for all those years, you’ll generally need a sizable amount of retirement assets. How will Social Security fit into the picture? For most people, Social Security won’t be enough to cover the cost of living in retirement. Nonetheless, Social Security benefits are still valuable, so you’ll want to do whatever you can to maximize them. Your first move is to determine when you should start taking Social Security. You can begin collecting benefits when you reach 62 – but should you? If you were to turn 62 this year, your payments would only be about 71% of what you’d get if you waited until your full retirement age, which is 66 years and 10 months. (“Full retirement age” varies, depending on when you were born, but for most people today, it will be between 66 and 67.) Every month you wait between now and your full retirement age, your benefits will increase. If you still want to delay taking benefits beyond your full retirement age, your payments will increase by 8% each year, until you’re 70, when they “max out.” Regardless of when you file, you’ll also receive an annual cost-of-living adjustment. So, when should you start claiming your benefits? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone. If you turn 62 and you need the money, your choice might be made for you. But if you have sufficient income from other sources, you’re in good health and you have longevity in your family, or you’re still working, it might be worthwhile to wait until your full retirement age, or perhaps even longer, to start collecting. Another key consideration is spousal benefits. If your own full retirement benefit is less than 50% of your spouse’s full retirement benefit, you would generally be eligible to claim spousal benefits, provided you’re at least 62 and your spouse has filed for Social Security benefits. Survivor benefits are another important consideration. When you pass away, your spouse would be able to receive up to 100% of your benefit or his/her own retirement benefit, whichever is higher. Thus, delaying Social Security could not only increase your own benefit, but also the benefit for your surviving spouse. An additional issue to think about, when planning for how Social Security fits into your retirement, is your earned income. If you’re younger than full retirement age, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for each $2 you earn above a certain amount, which, in 2021, is $18,960. During the year you reach full retirement age, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for each $3 you earn above a set amount ($50,520 in 2021). But once you hit the month at which you attain full retirement age, and from that point on, you can keep all of your benefits, no matter how much you earn (although your benefits could still be taxed). One final point to keep in mind: The more you accumulate in your other retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, the more flexibility you’ll have in managing your Social Security benefits. So, throughout your working years, try to contribute as much as you can afford to these plans. Registration begins at 11 AM and a shotgun start is at 12:30 PM. The event, titled “LARC on the Links,” features 18 holes of golf, lunch, games, contests, and complimentary select refreshments on the course. A recognition dinner following the scramble is also included. This year’s event features over $30,000 in hole-in-one prizes. Golf-dinner packages are $165 per person. Dinner-only guests are $60 per person. LARC is seeking golfers, sponsorships, as well as in-kind donations for their raffle. Sponsorship opportunities range in price from $165 to $3,500. In-kind donations, such as gift cards and gift certificates from area restaurants and businesses, will help

to provide additional raffle revenue at the event. All proceeds will support more than 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in programs that provide job training and employment, daily life skills enrichment, senior services, 24-hour residential services, and special recreation. “LARC’s special events fundraising revenue has been on the decline due to the pandemic. Despite the safely coordinated protocols implemented at last year’s event, many of our regular golfers did not feel comfortable participating,” said Executive Director Ernie Gonzalez. He added, “As local and national conditions have been showing signs of reopening to a new normal, we are excited to host this event again, and we’re hoping to see many new and familiar faces!” Sponsorships, golf, and dinner reservations should be received by Monday, August 2. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My neighbor said he just sold his home but he had to pay the buyers closing costs. No one ever paid for my closing costs. If I didn’t have the money, I didn’t buy it. Why is this allowed? Answer: First off, your neighbor did not have to pay for his buyers closing costs. He chose to as part of the negotiations. Your neighbor was satisfied with his bottom line, which is simply the net sales price of the home. There is no difference whether he paid for his buyers closing costs or simply reduced the sales price by the same amount. The closing costs were taken out of your neighbors proceeds at closing. No money was given to the buyer upfront. This transaction must be viewed as only a business deal. Keep your emotions out of it. Times are different now. Paying a buyer’s closing costs has advantages to the seller and

buyer. For sellers, it presents an option in negotiations to help them sell their home. For buyers, it allows them to either ‘buy down’ their mortgage interest rate or to have extra cash to update the home or make other improvements that may be needed. A successful business transaction takes place when both parties are satisfied with the deal. Apparently your neighbor was satisfied or he wouldn’t have accepted the offer.
