CONGRATULATIONS
The Miss GEICO Offshore Racing Team will bring high-speed excitement to the southern shore of Lake Michigan, IN during the 12th Annual Great Lakes Grand Prix on August 4-8. The races in Michigan City are the third stop in the six-race APBA Offshore National Championship Series. Miss GEICO currently holds the top position in the Class ONE division. The Class ONE racing division was established in 2019 to attract the top-ranked teams from across the globe. As the fastest class of racing, specific parameters were incorporated for the watercraft requiring consistency for all boats: a weight of 11,750 pounds, factory-sealed twin 1100 horsepower engines, and consistent propeller sizes. By standardizing the specifications of the boat, wins and losses were determined by the skill and expertise of the driver-throttleman combo thereby creating some of the best racing action seen to date. The 47-foot Victory catamaran will be driven by Hall of Champions Inductee Brit Lilly. World renowned throttleman Steve Curtis will share the cockpit with Lilly. The elite racers hold numerous world championship titles separately and won their first combined world championship race at the end of the 2020 offshore racing season. “The Great Lakes Grand Prix is one of the top events of the year,” said Brit Lilly. “I love Michigan City and can’t wait to be back in the driver’s seat of the Miss GEICO to compete in the races.
SHARE
I look forward to clinching another win with Steve Curtis to continue the winning streak for the team.” “Over my 35-year career I have had the opportunity to work with dozens of drivers and Brit is one of the very best. It will be great to compete with Brit and cross the finish line in the first position during the Great Lakes Grand Prix,” said Steve Curtis. The Miss GEICO Team is expected to make numerous appearances on the winner’s podium during the 2021 season while defending its world championship title. Race teams will begin arriving on Thursday prior to the start of the evening VIP Party at 6 p.m. at Sunset Grill. Additional teams will arrive on Friday afternoon and the Taste of Michigan City will kick off at 4 p.m. On Saturday, August 7, AquaX races and powerboat testing will take place beginning at 10 a.m. and wrap up by 4 p.m. The Taste of Michigan City re-opens at noon with a boat parade and block party starting at 6 p.m. on North Franklin Street. A full day of racing with all classes of boats will take place on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. with Miss GEICO competing in the last race of the day. The race village is located in Washington Park in the Michigan City and will be open to the public Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA The Biblical book of 1 Samuel opens with a story of answered prayer. Hannah desperately wanted a child. She was married to a man named Elkanah, who had children by another woman. But Hannah wanted her own. So she prayed. She prayed and prayed. She visited the Lord’s house with her husband and prayed there. The Bible tells us other women of her household mocked her for her lack of children. Hannah would weep and refuse food. 1 Samuel 1:7 says, “So it went on, year by year.” The Bible tells us of one occasion when Hannah prayed in the Lord’s house. 1 Samuel 1:10 says, “She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.” A priest notices her prayer. It’s so fervent and emotional that he thinks she’s drunk at first. She throws herself before the Lord’s mercy and promises that any future son He might give her will be devoted to Him. Then comes the verse that brings a tear to my eye. After Hannah returns home, 1 Samuel 1:19 says, “The Lord remembered her.” After years of desperation, the Lord has not forgotten Hannah. Hannah conceives and gives birth to a son (Samuel) who would be instrumental in God’s plans. In Chapter 2, Hannah praises God for His goodness and love. If I were to give this small section of the Bible a title, it would be “The Lord Hears.” The Lord never forgot Hannah. In His perfect timing, He answered her prayer. He does the same today. He may not always answer our prayers in the way we want, but He hears them, and his plans for us are perfect — even if not fully understandable. Your desperate prayers are not just empty whisperings in the dark. They are heard by the Lord of the universe — and He loves you. Bring your prayers to God. He will hear you. Linda, Jerry’s then fiancée’ are both from Calumet City. Linda died about five years ago. my brother Jerry in 2010 and Spencer, my son on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2021. Many fun memories with those three beloved people in our lives. Linda was a dedicated nurse who worked in a clinic in Chicago Heights. Jerry was working for various companies delivering anything from Jays Potato Chips to Wholesome Bread and in his spare time he was collecting antique cars and parts for those cars. Spencer worked for 23 plus years at A T & T and then a short time at the Illinois Secretary of State in Bradley, Il. He adored his 4 daughters and lived to make them happy. All 3 will be missed. CLIENT CAUSED BILL PROBLEM
Market Value VS Appraised Value
WOODROW WILCOX A client caused his medical bill problem. The client is a senior citizen from Highland, Indiana. On June 23, 2021, I discovered how the client caused the bill problem. A few days earlier, he called me to complain about a medical bill not being paid by his insurance company. I asked him to take the bill to our Munster office and let the people there copy the medical bill and send it to me. Actually, it was a collection letter about a medical bill. Danielle MacDonald at our Munster office questioned the client. She discovered that the client made a mistake when he got the medical service. Would you like to know what that mistake was? The client has a Medicare Advantage policy. He should have shown the card for that policy to the medical service. Instead, he showed them only his Medicare ID card. That is a big mistake if you have a Medicare Advantage policy because there are two separate and distinct claim systems involved. A claim on a Medicare Advantage plan must be filed with the insurance company of that plan. A claim for a combination of Medicare and a Medicare supplement plan can be filed simply with a Medicare ID card. Again, there are two claim filing systems. By showing only his Medicare ID card without the Medicare Advantage plan card, the client gave false
information to the medical firm for filing the claim. Medicare Advantage plans combine Medicare parts A, B, and D into a single plan that operates similarly to the old Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) models. With those plans, you must stay in-network or get charged much more. Because the client showed the wrong ID card to the medical firm, the claim never was directed to the correct place for processing and payment. That caused the client to get a letter from a collection firm. Danielle MacDonald explained this to the client. So, he went to the medical firm, explained what happened, gave them the correct information for filing the claim, and asked them to call off the collection firm. If they are reasonable, that should work. But again, it was the client who made the mistake that caused the problem. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be bought at bookstores or online.
Five Natural Antihistamines to Fight Summer Allergies Did you know that more than 50 million Americans experience some form of allergy every year? Whether it be food, pollen, dust, dander, mold (or any other allergy you can think of), allergies can take us down in an instant without notice. While you may be tempted to turn to your handy-dandy, over-the-counter antihistamines, there are some other approaches that may help ease your allergy struggles totally naturally. Dr. Vikki Petersen, certified clinical nutritionist, chiropractor and certified functional medicine practitioner, dives into the power of antihistamines and how they work to combat allergies: “An antihistamine, meaning “against histamine”, is a substance that blocks the effects of histamine. Histamines are released by your immune system when you are exposed to something it feels is a danger to you. The histamine response is responsible for the classic symptoms of allergies including seasonal allergies, environmental and food allergies. Antihistamines come in the form of synthetic drugs as well as natural substances,” says Dr. Vikki Petersen. How do antihistamines help with all allergies? “Antihistamines block the receptors for histamine, lessening the symptoms histamine creates. They provide relief of such symptoms as runny nose, watery eyes, itchy skin, congestion, and scratchy throat. Antihistamines can also provide benefit for the symptoms associated with food allergies which can include hives, rashes and digestive upset.” Here are Dr. Vikki Petersen’s top 5 natural allergy-reducing antihistamines to try out:
ANTIHISTAMINE #1: Vitamin C Vitamin C is a known antioxidant and antihistamine and is a great natural way to get these benefits. Taking 2 grams (2,000 milligrams) of vitamin C per day has potent antihistamine effects. Vitamin C is high in citrus fruits, berries, grapes, kiwi, red and green bell peppers, onions and green tea. ANTIHISTAMINE #2: Butterbur Butterbur is a marsh plant, and part of the daisy family, that has been found effective in treating hay fever symptoms. It is best taken in supplement form. ANTIHISTAMINE #3: Bromelain Bromelain, commonly found in pineapples, has been found effective at treating allergy-related respiratory distress and inflammation. Bromelain is also found in kiwi, ginger, and asparagus, and you can easily find it in supplement form. ANTIHISTAMINE #4: Probiotics A healthy immune system is important to prevent allergies. Probiotics balance the good bacteria in your gut, enhancing your immune system. Probiotics, and a healthy diet that feeds your good bacteria, would be a long-range approach to avoiding allergies. You can find probiotics in cultured yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha tea and many more healthy foods. ANTIHISTAMINE #5: Quercetin Quercetin is an antioxidant with known antihistamine effects. Research has shown it to reduce inflammatory effects even in the lungs and sinuses. Quercetin can be found in foods such as capers, red onion, shallots, apples, grapes, berries and cherries.
Pritzker Signs YI-Backed Student Parents Bill Into Law Last Friday, July 9th, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Student Parent Data Collection Act into law. The legislation will require public colleges and universities in Illinois to collect data on students who are also parents to better understand the challenges confronting this population. Only limited data exist, and a rough estimate indicates 14 percent of all Illinois college students are parents. In response, Lily Rocha, Midwest Regional Director for Young Invincibles, issued the following statement: “Obtaining higher education is challenging enough, but it is twice the commitment and twice the cost if you are also a parent. While roughly 14 percent of all Illinois college students juggle school and parenthood, we do not know how many student parents there really are in our state or have a full account of the unique challenges confronting them. From national data, we know that students of color—especially Black, Latina, and Native American women—are more likely to be parents than their white counterparts. We suspect that this reality is the case in Illinois, but we cannot be sure without
more data. And if this statement is accurate, then by not counting and serving student parents, we are allowing inequities in our higher education system to persist. Thankfully, on Friday, Illinois took a major step forward. We are thrilled to see this bill signed into law and commend Governor J.B Pritzker for his commitment to student success. The data collected because of this new law will help to better target resources to student parents, identify effective support programs that do work and help institutions improve conditions for their students. This victory would not have been possible without the hard work of our coalition partners: Illinois Action for Children, Partnership for College Completion, ReadyNation, and Women Employed. YI Midwest is also deeply grateful to our legislative sponsors, State Representative Will Guzzardi (D-Chicago) and State Senator Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago) for their leadership and support of student parents.”
MIKE BUDER The appraised value of a property and the market value are separate but equally important metrics. Two separate terms are often used when discussing the value of a home: The appraised value vs market value. Many homeowners often wonder what the difference is between the two and which one matters most. The truth is, they both play an important role in your real estate transaction. What is the market value of a property? In real estate, the market value is determined by how much prospective buyers are willing to pay for it in the current market. In other words, it’s the same as the purchase price that’s proposed when a buyer submits an offer on the home. Typically, when buyers decide on a proposed sale price for a property, they take the following four factors into consideration: 1. The Asking Price. Usually, buyers will look at your home’s asking price as a starting point for the negotiations. They will then decide to offer a contract price that may be higher or lower based on their overall impression of the property. 2. The competition. For the most part, by the time buyers are ready to submit an offer, they’ve been on a few showings, this means they have seen a few other homes that are currently on the market and are likely similar. When making their offer, they’ll be weighing how your home stacks up to the competition. 3. The Condition. The property’s condition is another big factor in determining the proposed selling price. In buyers’ minds, they’re budgeting how much money they would have to put into the property if they end up buying it. That said, homes that need more
TLC are likely to receive lower proposed purchase prices than homes that are more up-to-date. 4. The Interest In The Property. Our current market has many properties that receive multiple offers and they tend to receive contracts above the list price while some properties sit on the market without experiencing much activity at all. What is the appraised value of a property? Once your home is under contract, it will likely undergo an appraisal. Mortgage companies require appraisals because they want to verify that the property is worth at least the proposed purchase price…They do this in order to make sure they’ll be able to sell off the asset to cover any losses in the event that the buyer defaults on the loan. The appraisal is done by a third party professional which is licensed or certified in the state. These appraisers are trained to determine your home’s value without showing any bias and must be able to substantiate their determination of value. Simply put, a home’s market value is often more subjective because it is largely based on the buyer’s opinion of the property. The home’s appraised value is very important in our area because it will often be a condition of the buyer’s mortgage approval. prepared audition materials are not necessary. Auditioners will read from scenes, which will be available at the time of auditions. Be prepared to list all conflicts with the rehearsal schedule. “South Suburban College is still concerned for the safety of our students, staff and community members,” said Ellie Shunko, the manager of the Kindig Performing Arts Center. “As such, auditionees will need to enter the building at the Atrium entrance for a temperature check. Masks will be required when not on stage.” Signs will be posted pointing the way from the Atrium entrance, which is a short walk away. In addition to acting talent, the PAC Rats are also seeking volunteers who want to try their hands backstage. “Putting on a play takes a lot of hands,” said Shunko. “We hope that those who aren’t ready to step on stage will enjoy working backstage on sets and props.” For character descriptions, rehearsal schedule and more information, visit the Kindig Performing Arts Center’s website at http://learn.ssc.edu/ theatre/ or email ssctheatre@ssc.edu.

Real Estate Questions & Answers
The Right Emotions can be Useful in Investing
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are going to sell our home. We have a dog and cat. What suggestions do you have for showings? Answer: Your pets are members of your family, and you love them as such, but when it is time to sell your home, they can create a bit of a challenge in a few key ways. You are not alone if you are trying to sell a home and you have pets. Around 60% of sellers have them, with 61% being dogs and 33% being cats. However, buyers either want to visualize their own pets in the home or, depending on their preferences, no pets at all. Pets can also create messes and odors that can turn buyers off. It is important when your house is on the market that you keep it incredibly clean, especially if you have pets. You want to make sure you get to the root cause of any odors as well. If you have rugs or carpets, you might need to have them professionally cleaned or even replaced to eliminate pet odors. Same with furniture. Vacuum your home every day. You must be conscious of not just odors and cleanliness when you have pets, but there may be people who come into your home with pet allergies. Pets can be destructive, and you may overlook some of this
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN You may have heard that it’s important to take the emotions out of investing. But is this true for all emotions? Certainly, some emotions can potentially harm your investment success. Consider fear. If the financial markets are going through a down period – which is actually a normal part of the investment landscape – you might be so afraid of sustaining losses that you sell even the investments that have good prospects and are suitable for your needs. Greed is another negative emotion. When the financial markets are rising, you might be so motivated to “cash in” on some big gains that you will keep purchasing investments that might already be overpriced – and since these investments are already expensive, your dollars will buy fewer shares. In short, the combination of fear and greed could cause you trouble. But other emotions may prove useful. For example, if you can channel the joy you’ll feel upon achieving your investment goals, you may be more motivated to stay on track toward achieving them. To illustrate: You may want to see your children graduate from college someday. Can you visualize them walking across the stage, diplomas in hand? If so, to help realize this goal, you might find yourself ready and willing to contribute to a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. Or consider your own retirement: Can you see yourself traveling or pursuing your hobbies or taking part in whatever activities you’ve envisioned for your retirement lifestyle? If you can keep this happy picture in mind, you may find it easier to maintain the discipline needed to consistently invest in your IRA, 401(k) or other investment accounts. Another motivating force is the most powerful emotion of all – love. If you have loved ones who depend on you, such as a spouse and children, you need to protect their future. One key element of this protection is the life insurance necessary to take care of your family’s needs – housing, education and so on – should something happen to you. Your employer may offer group life insurance coverage, but it might not be sufficient, so you may want to supplement it with your own policy. Furthermore, you may need to protect your loved ones from another threat – your own vulnerability to the need for long-term care. Someone turning age 65 today has almost a 70% chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This type of care, such as an extended nursing home stay or the help of a home health aide, is extremely expensive, and, for the most part, is outside the reach of Medicare. So, to pay for long-term care, you might have to drain a good part of your resources – or depend on your grown children for financial help. To keep your financial independence and avoid possibly burdening your family, you may want to consult with a financial professional who can recommend a strategy and appropriate solutions to cover long-term care costs. We’re used to a certain level of distraction while we’re driving: listening to a podcast about serial killers, or catching up with the sports news on local radio. But these kind of things require us to be passive, and don’t require our hands to leave the wheel. However, due to everyone’s increased obsession with social media, it’s become more common to find drivers turning to their phones while on the road - and not just at the traffic lights... Gunther VW Fort Lauderdale commissioned a survey of 3,100 drivers and quite shockingly, found that nearly 1 in 3 (29%) in Illinois admit to using social media while behind the wheel (compared to a national average of 26%). More specifically, almost 1 in 5 (16%) of us have taken a selfie while driving. Drivers in South Dakota and Rhode Island seem to be the most distracted drivers across the country with half (50%) admitting they have used social media while driving. Comparatively, only 11% of those in Arkansas say they’ve done so. And what platforms are we most likely to use while driving? Over half (58%) said Facebook, which often involves reading boring status updates or scrolling through quick new snippets. 12% said Snapchat, where you watch short videos - possibly involving cats and 10% said Twitter, which involves reading a range of tweets,

some which can make you laugh, some of which can make you angry. 8% said Instagram, involving scrolling through pretty images and perhaps catching up on celebrity updates. Another 8% watch longer videos on YouTube and just 4% exchange messages on WhatsApp while driving. This all adds up to a driver’s attention being severely distracted from what’s going on them, and on the road ahead. And far more seriously, it turns out 1 in 5 (18%) drivers don’t know it’s actually illegal to use a cellphone while driving. When asked whether people who do this should face the same penalties as drunk drivers, almost half (48%) agreed - but worryingly, 21% of drivers said they didn’t think using social media while driving affected their driving capabilities. And if a friend posted a selfie while driving, 1 in 10 (12%) people admit they would probably like the post. ‘It’s deeply concerning if over 1 in 4 of the driving population aren’t aware of these rules of the road,’ says Joseph Gunther IV from spokesperson from Gunther VW Fort Lauderdale, ‘as it can have serious consequences. Being distracted by social media means you’re more likely to have an accident; best to keep the updates to when you’re parked up.’

damage because you are used to it, but buyers will not. Go through your home with fresh eyes and look for any pet damage that needs to be repaired, like scratched or torn furniture or flooring, chew marks on baseboard or window sills or ripped curtains. Check for any damage outside of your house too. Remember, not everyone loves pets as much as you do. If possible, put your pets elsewhere during showings. If your pets do have to stay at home, come up with a solution with your real estate agent. Do not have buyers be surprised by your pets. For example, maybe you can put them in the basement and leave a few notes if necessary. Finally, talk to your real estate agent about giving you plenty of notice before a showing so you can arrange care for your animals whenever possible. Nutrition and blood pressure: The best and worst foods for hypertension Did you know that nearly half of all adults in the U.S. suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure, and are taking medication to help combat it? Even though it affects such a large population, only about 24% have their hypertension condition under control. Many assume that medication is the only solution in helping combat high blood pressure; however, there are other common lifestyle factors that can drastically affect blood pressure levels, especially your diet. Dr. Vikki Petersen, certified clinical nutritionist, chiropractor and functional medicine doctor, highlights the importance of knowing how the foods you eat can affect your overall health and contribute to your blood pressure levels: “What you eat, and don’t eat, has a strong influence on your blood pressure. Your blood pressure is not only a monitor of your cardiovascular health and risk of stroke but also your kidney and brain function,” says Dr. Vikki Petersen. What are some common foods that can increase blood pressure? Here is Dr. Vikki Petersen top 4 worst foods for hypertension: Food #1: Salt Salt, or sodium, is everyone’s top of mind culprit for causing high blood pressure. However, healthy salt for flavoring your food can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet. Excess salt pulls water into your blood vessels to help balance the excess sodium, and the result is increased blood volume which in turn increases blood pressure. Food #2: Sugar Sugar, especially fructose, can have a direct effect on elevating your blood pressure. Fructose decreases your levels of healthy nitric oxide, a dilator and a relaxor to your blood vessels. Nitric oxide also keeps your vessels elastic, another factor in reducing blood pressure. Food #3: Deli meat Deli meat is cured with sodium and, therefore, contains a very high
quantity. The mechanism is the same as discussed above in how salt increases blood pressure, but deli meats further aggravate inflammation due to all the preservatives and chemicals they contain. Food #4: Trans fats and unhealthy saturated fats Trans fats and unhealthy saturated fats raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol. The latter is responsible for removing bad cholesterol from your body, which is important for preventing high blood pressure. Trans fats are found in many prepackaged foods, while saturated fats are found in red meat, butter, chicken and cream. So, what are some foods that are good for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels? Here are Dr. Petersen’s top 4 best foods for hypertension: Food #1: Fruit Fruit is rich in phytonutrients that can decrease your blood pressure. Specifically, they are rich in fiber, magnesium and potassium which lower the tension in your blood vessels. Potassium can help your body get rid of sodium. Food #2: Vegetables Vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, are rich in nitrates that are known to relax your vessels and lower blood pressure. Similar to fruit, vegetables are rich in healthy fiber. Food #3: Whole grains Whole grains are rich in potassium, which as we mentioned earlier can help lower your blood pressure by ridding your body of sodium. Realize that a true whole grain is completely unprocessed, such as steel-cut oats (gluten-free preferably), quinoa, and buckwheat. Food #4: Beans Beans, along with nuts and seeds, are rich in magnesium which relaxes vessels and lowers blood pressure.

Stand-up comedy is a comedy performance and narrative craft whereby a comedian communicates to a live audience, speaking directly to them through a microphone. Stand-up comedy is a dialogic monologue, or a grouping of humorous stories, jokes, and one-liners, typically called a shtick, routine, act, or set. It can take an amateur comedian about 10 years to perfect the technique needed to be a professional comedian, this is a constant process of learning through failure.

Purpose-Driven Change Begins 1 in 3 Illinoisans achieved with Finding Your ‘Yes’ ‘perfect work/life balance’ in lockdown “Marie Pizano is an example of how you can overcome challenges to live with passion and purpose, and realize your ambitions. Her story can help empower and motivate others to find their Yes.” — Jack Canfield, Award-winning Author and Life Coach Memphis, TN, July 12, 2021 — Integrity. Cultural diversity. Purpose-driven change. Guided by these soul-nourishing principles, Marie Pizano hurdled one obstacle after another and ignored any naysayers on her way to becoming a filmmaker, music manager and founder of MVP3 Entertainment Group — and she hopes to inspire others by example. “I have a passion for life, a passion to get this entertainment powerhouse built, and a passion to teach my children the right way to live,” she says. “I have a passion for having fun, and I have the energy and determination to go and get my YES.” From Barefoot to Stilettos, Finding My Yes is the candid, compelling story of a woman who seeks responsible, win-win scenarios that create change and redefine expectations. As the CEO and founder of MVP3 Entertainment Group, she used her expansive vision to launch a groundbreaking multipurpose complex in Memphis by partnering with Darnell Stitts of ATWEC Technologies to form MVP3 Studios & Partners, LLC. She also partnered with Melissa Harville-Lebron, the first African-American woman to own a NASCAR team, and they are joining forces for the upcoming NASCAR series. But she is not all-business. She is also an impassioned community activist who spent the better part of 2020 advocating for a Tennessee amendment requiring divorcing parents to become educated on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) — before being granted a divorce. Giving back to the community and empowering others to rise up have been her driving forces since she could afford her first pair of stilettos.

Finding My Yes is Pizano’s way of sharing the trials she endured and the triumphs she celebrated through humorous and heartfelt vignettes that elucidate simple but powerful life lessons. Ultimately, she hopes to encourage readers to ignore the haters, bolster their moral backbones, and ultimately, find their own “yes.” About the Author Born and raised in Chicago, Marie Valentina Pizano moved to Memphis in 1999. She has served on the boards of the International Children’s Foundation, the Women’s Foundation for Greater Memphis and The Commission on Missing & Exploited Children. She was co-founder of the Tiara Tea Society, chairperson for Go Red for Women and created “ROCK FOR HOPE” for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is a devoted mother of two and very passionate about film, music and community. The author, producer, radio/TV host and speaker is building her life and her companies, MVP3 Entertainment Group and MVP3 Studios, on truth and integrity. From Barefoot to Stilettos is being made into a TV series, with Karyme Lozano (best known as an award-winning actress from Mexico) on board as writer. Pizano donates 10 percent of her book sales to charities that raise awareness and funding for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking: Amanda’s Way (www.AmandasWay.org) and Thistle & Bee (www.ThistleandBee.org); and she is working with www.RotaryFYI.com to educate the public on ACEs. Lockdowns were certainly a shock to the system when they first started and required some readjusting, particularly for those who found themselves working from home (WFH). Totally unprepared, millions of workers had to improvise by using ironing boards as desks, or hunching over low kitchen tables that would have triggered alarm bells if the occupational health consultants were present. When it all started, many would have questioned whether they could ever be happy with their new setups - afterall, there were no ergonomic chairs, no conference rooms to retreat to for calls, and no in-house WeWork style cafes serving your favorite tall, non-fat latte with caramel drizzle. But when it became clear that lockdowns were not just short term circuit breakers to defeat the virus, people did what they have been doing for centuries – they adapted and made the best out of their situation. Gradually, the new WFH set up started to have its advantages – in came real plants (as opposed to the plastic ones in the office); mid-morning jogs around the neighborhood became routine; and the lack of after-work drinking sessions has turned out to be great for people’s health and time for other activities. PRPioneer.com, the leading resource for public relations news, conducted a survey of 4,500 employees and found that over 1 in 3 (39%) Illinoisans say they have achieved the ‘perfect work/ life balance’ (compared to a national average of 44%). When broken down by state, this figure was highest in Alaska, where 70% of employees

It is difficult in these times to share exciting news when we know that the world, the country, our city and our community has suffered, and JDRF has had one of the hardest years in record, but I am proud to say as a chapter we persevered and found new ways to make an impact,” said Mimi K. Crabtree, Executive Director of JDRF Illinois. “Science and research have defined and guided JDRF for over 50 years. JDRF was built on this notion – of accelerating scientific breakthroughs

say they’ve found the perfect balance between work and personal life. Comparatively, it seems those in Louisiana, New Hampshire and Rhode Island still seem to be struggling with achieving this balance, with only 20% saying they’ve effectively done so. So, what hobbies and activities have Illinoisans been partaking in during lockdown? When asked, a quarter (25%) said they’ve spent time on home improvement and gardening, while 23% have been reading more. Another 19% enjoyed cooking more and 17% spent quality time with family, while 13% dedicated more hours to exercising and 3% made the most out of having more time for a proper breakfast. Furthermore, over a quarter said they’ve become more self-sufficient during lockdown, doing things they may have never done before like starting a herb garden, growing their own fruit and vegetables, baking from scratch and learning new DIY skills. ‘There’s no denying the difficulties brought on by lockdown but with the fast-paced nature of life as it was, there’s also no question that slowing things down has been beneficial for many of us as employees, parents, students and people in other walks of life,’ says Jamie Ellis for PRPioneer.com. ‘It’s refreshing to see that so many of us have taken these extra hours spent at home and translated it into using our time more mindfully and personally by doing enjoyable activities we never had the time for before.’

to make the lives of those living with type 1 as manageable as possible. And it is exciting to see the effort and dedication that continues to drive this mission forward, especially in this fiscal year,” said Board Chair Steve Dragich. Chapter boards and their members provide volunteer guidance to the chapter and play a vital role in executing fundraising, leadership and advocacy activities to ensure that its efforts remain aligned with the needs of people who live with T1D. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. An estimated 64,000 people are diagnosed each year in the U.S. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life in order to manage blood-sugar levels, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness or eye disease. JDRF is committed to advancing life-changing breakthroughs from development to the marketplace and into the hands of people with T1D.
