students received $145,579 in debt relief and 415 students received $133,836 in technology – primarily laptops – through the CARES Act for the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEERF). The SSC Foundation awarded $66,221.17 in COVID-19 funding for tuition, books, technology, and living expenses in addition to its traditional annual scholarship awards. Most recently, SSC initiated a new Student Emergency Aid Program through the Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC) to provide financial support up to $500 per student for short-term, nonrecurring emergencies. New South Suburban College Student Trustee, Dion Rubin, wants to encourage more students to come back to school. Rubin received a free laptop, hotspot and $950 in direct aid to date. “I have complete confidence in South Suburban College – the faculty have done an amazing job and I have felt extremely safe returning to campus.” Rubin received his High School Equivalency (HSE) before pursuing his college education in the Fall 2020 Semester during the height of the pandemic. “My goal is to make the student experience the best it can be and to promote a positive educational culture. Positivity can do great things.” Other opportunities for career program funding at SSC include the Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) Grant, and the One Workforce Grant through the Calumet Area Industrial Commission (CAIC). The WEI grant provides wrap-around services including comprehensive financial assistance and academic support to participating students within a variety of program areas providing stackable credentials. Funding for the H-1B One Workforce Grant is provided by the US Department of Labor for tuition, fees and books in short-term advanced manufacturing programs with industry recognized credentials. All of the funding, grant and programmatic information is available from ssc.edu. Fall classes will begin Monday, August 16, 2021, with the safety and flexibility of five modes of class delivery at SSC. Class schedules, registration services and a new “live chat” with staff are available at ssc.edu. Prospective students may also call (708) 210-5718 or email admissions@ ssc.edu to get questions answered.

It’s not too late to get registered and take advantage of a significant range of free resources at South Suburban College (SSC) this fall. In fact, returning to school or pursing one’s college dream for the first time is a “no-brainer,” according to college promotions. “This is truly a unique time in our College history when most students literally are debt free, and in many cases plus direct financial assistance, and plus free laptops,” said Dr. Lynette Stokes, SSC President. “SSC has long provided comprehensive scholarship and tuition waiver packages to students, but this is much more and we want residents of our community to know they have an opportunity. We have worked really hard to secure and thoughtfully distribute multiple sources of funding to help our students manage this difficult year and be successful.” Those additional funding sources available to students include CARES Act stimulus, several new grant initiatives, and Foundation-sponsored COVID-19 Impact Awards among others. In total, SSC has provided over $3,400,000 in tuition relief, personal checks and technology grants to students last fiscal year, and more is available. Shanika Mack is a South Suburban College student who has made the best out of the challenges of the past year. “Losing my job forced me to step away and think about what’s important, like pursuing my bigger dreams,” said Mack, a 31-year old returning adult student who previously attended SSC immediately after graduating from Thornton High School. “The pandemic can take away my job but it can’t take away my education.” Mack received a free laptop, free books, and will have her entire tuition balance waived at the end of the 2021 Summer Semester if she stays on track to receive a “C” or better. She is already enrolled for fall classes with plans to graduate with an Associate’s Degree in General Studies next spring. Mack hopes to pursue a Business Degree at Governor’s State University upon graduation. According to SSC’s Business Office, 1,219 students have received $1,283,556 in tuition balances waived to date, and another 3,415 students received direct payments of $2,124,600 through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA As I was walking alone in Chicago late one night, a woman approached me and asked if she could use my phone. She was clearly unnerved and as I pulled out my phone and unlocked it, I prayed that the Lord would let my 2% battery be enough to help her. She completed her call and thanked me, saying she needed to walk to Union Station, which was at least 10 blocks from where we were. I offered to drive her instead, and she accepted. As we travelled the dark city streets, Paulina started to tell me, with tears in her eyes, why she was on the street by herself in the middle of the night. Her partner had abused her, verbally and physically. This had been going on in small ways for some time, but tonight had been the worst. She left her home with bruises and a bag and took to the streets, hoping to walk to a safe pick-up location designed for people in her exact situation. Paulina’s story was shocking, but her perspective was even more so. “I know the Lord has a plan for me in this,” she told me, just hours after her horrific ordeal. “God does everything for a reason.” I was dumbfounded. The strength of this woman’s faith shocked me. She had every right to scream out in anger, bitterness, and grief and instead she chose to tell me — a complete stranger — about God’s faithfulness. I brought Paulina where she needed to go, I prayed for her, and I gave her a hug before she walked away. As I got back in the car, the tears came. Tears of sympathy for her terrible experience, tears of thankfulness that God allowed me to help her, and tears of humility as her deep faith brought God’s sovereignty front and center in my mind. Paulina was right, of course. If you’re going through something horrific, I won’t pretend to tell you how to feel. I’ll simply pass along what Paulina taught me: the Lord works through it all. Is Roth IRA Better for Young Workers?
Renovation Costs… Through The Roof $$$ MIKE BUDER
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

Many people are looking to fix up their existing homes in order to take advantage of the commodity based real estate market of 2021. It doesn’t matter if you are doing the work yourself or calling professional contractors you will notice an uptick in prices compared to previous years. If you haven’t recently shopped for materials or received contractor quotes, you may be in for a little shock at the cost of certain things today. Let me shed some light on why home renovation is so expensive this year. First, the pandemic after-effects…by now, we are all familiar with the impact that COVID-19 had throughout 2020, from the economy to the public health and safety challenges that came along with it. One of the lingering reasons why home renovation has become so expensive is the measure of safety precautions that needed to be taken to ensure all parties involved are safe from infection. While many states are peeling regulations back, each business and location needed to move at their own pace in accordance with health and safety guidelines. Additionally, services are in higher demand due to the delays the pandemic placed on many projects and businesses. That alone can increase charges for construction and contractors. Another significant reason why home renovations are so expensive this year is the shortage of materials that is spreading throughout the construction industry. From lumber to steel to electrical supplies and appliances most contractors are facing delays from material shortages. This means materials will be more expensive and sourcing them will require more effort, meaning higher labor costs. If you’re working with a contractor to find reasonable materi-
als, check out local avenues such as nearby auctions, thrift stores, online shops and yard sales. You never know exactly what you might find. Labor shortages have also been an issue, both during the height of the pandemic and in our post-vaccination world. Many industries are seeing a labor shortage in the United States right now and in person work is in high demand. Especially in fields like construction and contracting. In a field that relies heavily on skilled labor and expertise that takes time and effort and is impossible to do remotely, the cost of that labor will most likely increase with the rules of supply and demand. Unfortunately, this is an issue that may also stretch out for the next few years across industries. Longer delays are expected well into 2022 specifically due to the COVID-19 pull backs placed on so many construction projects. At the same time they’re dealing with falling behind, the labor and material shortages have put many businesses at a further disadvantage. However, if you are prepared to wait a bit, you can rest assured your project will still get completed. And as contractors complete their existing backlog of projects the delays may even shrink earlier than anticipated depending on the specific contractor you work with. If you’re in the early stages of your career, you’re probably not thinking much about retirement. Nonetheless, it’s never too soon to start preparing for it, as time may be your most valuable asset. So, you may want to consider retirement savings vehicles, one of which is an IRA. Depending on your income, you might have the choice between a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA. Which is better for you? There’s no one correct answer for everyone. But the more you know about the two IRAs, the more confident you’ll be when choosing one. First of all, the IRAs share some similarities. You can fund either one with many types of investments – stocks, bonds, mutual funds and so on. And the contribution limit is also the same – you can put in up to $6,000 a year. (Those older than 50 can put in an additional $1,000.) If you earn over a certain amount, though, your ability to contribute to a Roth IRA is reduced. In 2021, you can put in the full $6,000 if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is less than $125,000 and you’re single, or $198,000 if you’re married and file jointly. The amount you can contribute gradually declines, and is eventually limited, at higher income levels. But the two IRAs differ greatly in how they are taxed. Traditional IRA contributions are typically tax-deductible (subject to income limitations), and any earnings growth is taxdeferred, with taxes due when you take withdrawals. With a Roth IRA, though, your contributions are never tax-deductible – instead, you contribute after-tax dollars. Any earnings growth is tax-free when withdrawn, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t take withdrawals until you’re at least 59½. So, which IRA should you choose? You’ll have to weigh the respective benefits of both types. But when you’re young, you may have particularly compelling reasons to choose a Roth IRA. Given that you’re at an early point in your career, you may be in a lower tax bracket now than you will be during retirement, making the tax-deduction of traditional IRA contributions less beneficial. So, it may make sense to contribute to a Roth IRA now and take tax-free withdrawals when you’re retired. Also, a Roth IRA offers more flexibility. With a traditional IRA, you could face an early withdrawal penalty, in addition to taxes, if you take money out before you’re 59½. But with a Roth, you’ll face no penalty on withdrawals from the money you contributed (not your earnings), and you’ve already paid the taxes, so you could use the money for any purpose, such as making a down payment on a home. Nonetheless, you may still want to be cautious about tapping into your IRA for your spending needs before you retire, since IRAs are designed to provide retirement income. If your income level permits you to select a Roth or traditional IRA, you may want to consult with your tax advisor for help in making your choice. But in any case, try to max out on your IRA contributions each year. You could spend two or three decades in retirement – and your IRA can be a valuable resource to help you enjoy those years. Real Estate Questions & Answers
WOODROW WILCOX
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I purchased a 250-year-old home and had an all-around home inspection including termites, power post beetles etc. The house passed. The home was inspected in May and by mid-September I saw a white ant walking across my dining room floor next to my fireplace. I called a pest control company and they collected samples. The samples confirmed that we have termites. Who is ultimately responsible for taking care of this? Answer: Do you have actual termite damage or just a few bugs hopping around? A change in the weather could drive insects indoors, thus there may not have been termites in the house during the warm months when the house was first inspected. You say you had a “home inspection.” Was the inspector a licensed pest controller or a general structural inspector? If there is termite damage that was missed, then speak with the inspector about such warranties as they may provide. As to the current infestation, it should be treated by a licensed pest controller. Question: We expected to close on a house today, but then found out that the buyers’ broker neglected to mention the minor contingency of them needing to sell their home first. At contract, they specifically mentioned the
buyers had no contingencies. Now they are having trouble closing on their home ... which they need to close on our deal. What happens if our deal falls apart? Answer: Read the sale agreement. Does it permit closing to be delayed until the buyer’s current residence is sold and title is transferred? Real estate agreements are in writing precisely because verbal understandings are worthless. The buyers have no right to unilaterally change the terms of a sale agreement, thus the purchasers may lose their deposit and face other damages if they do not meet all contract requirements. That said, your goal is to sell the home. A brief delay rather than the loss of the sale might be in your interest. Of course, it might be even more in your interest to allow a delay if the buyers paid more of the closing costs or made other concessions. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. BILLING FIRM IGNORED THE RULES
Place your classified ad online at myshopper.biz
On July 6, 2021, a senior citizen client from Merrillville visited our Merrillville office to ask me for help. He got a bill for $3,124 from a medical billing firm in Texas. He was a smart client. He brought to me a copy of his insurance company’s Explanation of Benefits and a copy of his Medicare Summary Notice. The bill was wrongful because the billing company ignored Medicare rules and billed our client $3,124 when he actually owed nothing. All over our country, senior citizens are being hit with medical bills that are caused by mistakes or fraud in the Medicare system. For years, I have tried to get the attention of politicians to take steps to fix the problems. They just ignore me or give lip service. The lack of concern is in both major political parties. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical billing firm. Remember, if I had not helped this client, he would have been hounded to pay this bill that he really did not owe. Our client brought to our office a bill from your firm, a copy of his Medicare Summary Notice that relates to your bill, and other papers. Your bill to our client seeks a balance from him of $3,124 on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on 01/12/2021. I compared your bill with the Medicare Summary Notice. I phoned the patient’s secondary insurer to learn if it had received the Medicare Explanation of Benefits. It had and it paid exactly what Medicare
determined was owed. Your bill gives evidence that you received the Medicare EOB but ignored Medicare’s ruling in order to bill our client wrongfully for $3,124. Medicare ruled that the maximum you could bill our client for the service was $97.47. Medicare paid 80% of that figure and the insurance company paid the 20% balance. OUR CLIENT OWES YOUR FIRM NOTHING. But you ignored Medicare’s ruling and billed our client for $3,124. That is the original billing amount. YOUR BILL TO OUR CLIENT EVIDENCES SLOPPY, UNPROFESSIONAL, AND DECEPTIVE BILLING PRACTICES. Follow Medicare rules and send a bill to our client with a balance of zero. If you don’t cancel this bill, we will help our client file a complaint against your firm for your bad business practices. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to protect our clients from Medicare related bills that are caused by mistakes or fraud in the Medicare system. We help our clients AT NO CHARGE. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our insurance agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through bookstores and online.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away The aphorism, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” originated in Wales, first appearing in a publication in 1866 in a different rhyming format: “Eat an apple on going to bed and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” In the 19th century and early 20th, the phrase evolved to “an apple a day, no doctor to pay” and “an apple a days sends the doctor away,” while the phrasing now commonly used was first recorded in 1922. So, have an apple!
