College Exploration

CAA Students Go On College Field Trip By: Angela Don Tuesday, November 29, 2011 Commercial Art Academy students at Tampa Bay Technical High School were introduced to college options for schools with art majors. Most of the Junior class went on a field trip to Keiser University and the Art Institute of Tampa. The colleges put their effort into trying to present the students with as much information as possible. The Art Institute of Tampa made sure to explain what happens after graduating form their school "Of all 2009 graduates available for employment,

Spring2012

74.7% were working in a field related to their program of study within six months of graduation, at an average starting salary of $24,476" (Tom Deaton). Tom made sure the academy everything about their career options at the institute and about financial aid options. The Art Institute of Tampa was very welcoming to the students who attended the field trip. Ledja Tashi, a commercial art student at TBT, "I believe that the school was very prepared, informative, and inviting; it was definitely a good experience." The school is located right by the Raymond

James Stadium, which is great because of distance form home. You can go to the Institute without worrying of leaving the state and your family. Keiser University put their hearts into the presentation of their college. They taught the academy about different programs and gave several lessons that related to their design and multimedia degree. At Keiser, the students receive their education one class at a time which eliminates juggling multiple classes and academics simultaneously. They also have a very hands-on career education

while having small classes. This allows students to enjoy a more personal learning environment. At Keiser, Commercial Art Academy students got to experience the presentation with delightful people and food. They offered the students a breakfast bar and lunch to satisfy hunger needs. "At Keiser, the environment was very friendly and persevering" (Tram Pham, CAA student).

Both of the colleges were great at introducing themselves and informing the students about career choices. The CAA academy students now have more knowledge on what options are available to Spring2012

them after high school gradua- of their curriculum, the teachers tion. Though this is the fist field hope to continue the college vistrip the Academy had as a part iting field trip for years to come. CAACADEMYMAGAZINE

Both schools have something to offer by Jackie Franz Tuesday, November 29th. The Commercial Art Academy left Tampa Bay Tech on a wondrous journey to the world of college life. While on the way to these colleges, we saw some wonderful sights, but it was nothing compared to both campuses. First, we were off to Keiser University, a little campus just located off of Memorial Highway in Tampa. While being escorted inside the building, I kept thinking to myself, “Wow, what a small campus for such a big college.” But, during the informational lecture, they had

informed us that they were in the middle of the final construction of the college and it won’t be complete until early 2012. Learning about the new products that Adobe had to be the highlight of the trip plus, at the very end, the leader of our tour was nice enough to share how much admissions were. She had told us that to get in, besides having the normal high school diploma and a great GPA, you had to pay a little over $7000. Which is an affordable price for those who may not have the ability to pay more. Overall, Keiser University is a

large but small hands on college, with campuses all over the state of Florida, for the students who don’t want to leave home. After Keiser, we were off to visit The Art Institute of Tampa. As we arrived, I could already tell that I would love this place as if it were my own home. While we entered, we were taken into the lobby, given a short introduction by Tom Deaton and whisked away into a small but large room, where he then showed us some of the students work and gave us an imagination of what we would expect from attending the Art Institute. Unlike Keiser,

The morning at Keiser University was spent with the staff, students and faculty members of Keiser University presenting to the CAA students.

Recently the junior class went on a trip to Keiser University and the Art Institutes of Tampa Bay and our experience involved good pizza a fun lesson and a trip through the Art Institutes. The experience was fun and unforgettable and we learned how to make zombies with just a regular picture and about a new program from adobe called adobe edge which isn’t even out of the production stages. All of that fun only happened at Keiser University, imagine what we’d see at the Art Institutes! We saw movies in the making Jackie, Pam and Amari got front row seats at the Keiser presentation. The presentation lasted for a couple of hours followed by a giant pizza lunch provided by our hosts at Keiser.

where they directly gave us an amount for tuition, The Art Institute did not. I had to research it for myself. Upon research, I learned that tuition varies for the different types of degrees and major you want. The Art Institute of Tampa was a well-rounded and wonderful college with campuses all over the United States and it offers Spring2012

different majors depending on the campus you attend. At the end of the day, as we arrived back to the hustle and bustle of TBT, I had realized that wherever we want to go to college depends on what we want, think and need to be a successful person in the business industry. CAACADEMYMAGAZINE

INTERVIEW

by Tyler Wood What was your favorite part of the campus tour at the Art Institute? Art Institute: When we got to see the green screen room and watch how it was used. It was a giant green screen that basically covered the entire room, we watched people go in and demonstrate how it is used it was really cool to see something like that all come together. What did you learn about at the Art Institute, what intrigued you most? They have a lot of programs like culinary, fashion design, interior design, video game programming, and graphic design. I was really surprised at how much they offered. What Spring2012

with Caitlin Stanley 17, Junior in the Commercial Art Academy

intrigued me the most was how awesome their Mac lab was! It was so familiar because we have one at our school.

told us about all the programs. It was really cool to see the whole campus and understand what campus life was like.

What surprised you most about both of the schools? Both schools offer to let you to take your major studies courses in tandem with your core curriculum and general education courses.

What was the overall feeling of the campuses? They were really really friendly, I felt like we would be scolded because we are in high school but we actually felt really invited and like they wanted us to be there!

What surprised you most about Keiser? I was extremely surprised at the expansive amount of people they let in a year, 70% of applicants are accepted. What was the most entertaining part of your experience? When we took the tour around the Art Institute and our guide

What was the most memorable part of the whole trip? When we saw the awesome cakes that the culinary department at the Art Institute had made and their crazy chocolate sculptures. They were so intricate and I could really see the amount of time and work that went into them.

How much to charge per hour for a four hour food photography session?

Mara Capwell writes:

I’ve just might have landed my first “food photography” gig for a bakery in NYC. I am new to the world of food photography and was wondering, how much does one typically charge per hour for this kind of work? Responses Matt Laur But is that REALLY all you're doing? Are you also doing the post-production work? Hosting the images for online proofing? Delivery media? How about transport time? Not trying to be a we blanket, here, but those fourhour jobs are usually more like twenty-four, aren't they? You'll get some more constructive responses if you speak to the larger issue of what you'll be producing, on what terms, how the images will be used, who retains rights to them, and all of that other nit-picky stuff that makes the difference between $50/hour work and $350/hour work. Do tell!

Mara Capwell I see. well, I’m really quite new to this but the essence of the project is that I will be taking 1520 photos (I’m sure more like 100 with 15 to 20 making it into the 'final cut') for a bakery to be used for their promotional material (website, business cards, etc). there would be post production work and transport time, etc, but because this would be my first food session, I thought the rates should be less than average... does that help any? Stephen Lewis I doubt Michaelangelo charged differentially for his early and later work...he probably charged what his skill level in the market would bear. If this is a business

for you, you need to work on a business plan which allows you to make money and provides a service to your clients at a competitive rate. Mara Capwell Yes you're right. You see I’m mostly a street photographer: natural light, "decisive moment" stuff. I guess I wanted to get a feel for this because of my being a rookie in this part of the biz. I’m also trying to figure out, what is the going 'competitive rate?' Anthony R. Hourly? If you want to figure hourly, how much you want an hour and then figure what the entire time spent on the job will be. Then give them a flat rate based on your calculations. Fudge on your side for changes and unexpected time. Like was stated, you work 24 hours on a job (shooting or not) and pay yourself $400 well you just made 16.67/hr BEFORE taxes (real $ probably 10/hr. Might as well flip burgers, at least you'd get health benefits or a meal.. continued on next page

How much to charge per hour for a four hour food photography session? continued from page 11

Jeffrey Engel I think a respectable hourly wage is $50 if you're a creative and want to live a respectable middle class life. 4 hours on location, 4 hours in post, you got about $400 there. I think that's fair for a starting photographer. But you want to get to the point where you're charging more like $100 an hour. Some folks charge a day rate of $1200 and a half day of $600. Some charge a lot more, some charge less. Depends on your market and how much you want to undercut the competition. By doing stuff cheap, you help

lower the perception of value of our industry. It's OK when you're starting out, but only if it's your first gig or something. Don't get in a rut of charging little or no money. You'll end up doing junk jobs and build no portfolio. Trust me, I know this.. I've got 10 years of crap work behind me (as a designer, just recently got into photography). Jess Swazey Keep in mind that an hourly rate should only be part of what you charge the client. Make sure that you charge for usage too! Depending on the size of the

business as well as when, where and how they will be using your images, you need to charge accordingly. Even if the fee stays the same, you should itemize usage into your billing so the client knows that the images still belong to you (unless you charge them to sign over the copyright) and that they are only "borrowing" them from you. You may not ever have the chance to resell the images you take for the bakery, but you still want to retain the copyright so you can use them for your own promotion.

The Three-peat and the SWEEP!

SkillsUSA Region 4, Taylor Thor of the Commercial Art Academy at TBT swept the 2011-12 Florida SkillsUSA Design Competitions.

Spring2012

CAACADEMYMAGAZINE

When we started the annual design competitions this year our lofty goal was to win in all four of the Florida SkillsUSA Design categories. In 2009 the SkillsUSA student members of the CAA class surprised everyone and swept all four categories in the contests which include the Florida State Trading Pin Design, T-shirt Design, Conference Program Cover, and the official Florida Banner. In 2010 our 16 entries of the 200 plus entries came out on top again... The repeat. Then came Taylor Thor to add one more exclamation point to the record by putting together a complete campaign and winning all four categories himself. What’s left for next year four-peat’s sake? Jackie Ferneau The Commercial Art Academy’s Senior Class recently went to Ringling College of Art and Design. For me the experience was phenomenal. The campus was extremely beautiful. The atmosphere at the college was calm and productive with the feeling of success within reach. There are many different classes to choose from when applying such as animation, web design, or photography. They have specific room for many types of graphic and art field. They have all new technology like green screens, light board workstations, sound boxes, and more. All there class work stations have new, fancy equipment such as iMac computers and camera lights. Many of the people at the school have taken part in many Disney and Pixar animation movies such as Bugs Life, Madagascar 2, Shrek 3, Kung Fu Panda, and many others. With going to Ringling, students have the opportunity to pursue careers within many different art fields. To me Ringling College is the college to go to if anyone is looking to purse a career dealing with art or design, they have what people need to be successful and have a career doing what they love. Katie Ray I felt very privileged to be able to visit Ringling College of Art & Design's campus. The experience was very inspiring. The campus itself was beautiful; there were numerous gardens and pieces of artwork to see. Every classroom was filled with students working diligently on their creations. Each person had their own Mac computer as well as various other tools of the trade. Walking through the halls I could see many student's artwork displayed on the walls. The atmosphere overall was productive, creative and inspiring. It made me really consider going to an art college after graduation. Spring2012

Nick Crane The experience I had a Ringling Art College was both a rewarding one and learning one. While at Ringling and at every college I have been to I got a feeling of welcomeness and family. At Ringling I felt this the strongest. Once we walked into the facility I had many people there talk with me and help me along the way. So I now have comparative history of colleges and I feel this one is the best I have seen so far.

Ciara Curry Last week the Commercial Art Academy visited Ringling College of Art and Design. Despite the fact that there is no way I am going to school so close to home, I enjoyed the experience. Before the tour, I had the preconception that Ringling was just another overrated art school for pretentious future artists, however, after the tour my views were much different. It became clear that the prestige Ringling flaunts shamelessly every opportunity they get is well backed up. They seem to put a lot of emphasis on the goals of the individual, providing them with a clean and very impressive work environment that entices students from all over the world. Although I do have a new respect for the school, I still have my sights set abroad, but if I were to go to school in Florida, Ringling would definitely be an option. Spring2012

Romell Jones, Ciara Curry and Justin Knapik visited the campus graffiti wall on the last stop of the day on the Ringling tour. The photo below is an example of the many posters representing the films that student graduates have worked on.

Justin Knapik Before our class outing to Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, my views and aspirations for future schooling were much different than they are now. The trip to Ringling really inspired me to pursue a greater career in graphic design and to further my knowledge in clothing design. As a senior in the Commercial Art Academy at Tampa Bay Technical High School, it has been pretty imperative that I begin planning for my future and being exposed to the many opportunities at Ringling gave me the push that I needed to hasten my decision making. The tour around Ringling really showed me that pursuing my career through education in design after high school would be a life changing experience that I would never forget, benefiting me in more ways than one. Although Ringling may not be my school of choice, I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to explore the campus and reap the benefits of the knowledge I received.

Upon arrival at Ringling we had a short presentation by Amy Fisher from Ringling, she introduced our student guides and the tours began.

The wall of employers listed in the entrance of the admissions office was very impressive.

Ciara Curry takes a moment at the end of the tour to get a little more information from Dorian Angelo. Dorian is a member of the faculty at Ringling and is a member of our CAA Advisory Board, he also helped us out with the arrangements for our field trip and we a very thankful for that. One of the most impressive features on the tour was the animation area (below) the desks used in the studio were donated by Disney and were used in their studios to create many of our Disney childhood favorites.

Spring2012

Wesley Fredotovich Commercial Art Academy’s senior class trip to Ringling College of Art and Design was definitely an informative and eye opening experience for me. Prior to partaking on our academy’s tour of Ringling, I did not have a clear plan with what I was going to do after I finished high school. Now that I have seen the work, occupations, and success of Ringling graduates, I know who I want to be artistically. All forms of art were presented to us at Ringling; Advertising,

Spring2012

animation, photography, illustration, and any other medium that floods into the mind when one thinks of “art.” Graduates of this college have moved on to work for big names, such as Nickelodeon, Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar, just to name a few. When walking the halls, one would be wowed to find out that students have done work on such films as Terminator, Toy Story, and The Incredibles. It’s hard to grasp the opportunities that artists get until you step and really think “Wow! Somebody just like me had a part in something that people all around the world will get to look at.” Another thing that really struck

CAACADEMYMAGAZINE

me was how well students are taken care of while attending Ringling. On-campus housing, 24-hour computer labs, more computers than students (which lets students know that they will be guaranteed the opportunity to access a computer at any time), and MacBooks for each student. These qualities or Ringling are very reassuring to me that I will be able to get what I want done, where and when I need to. Ringling College of Art and Design is definitely now among my decisions for postsecondary education with my artistic aspirations in mind. This is the future I want.

Page_22

Matthew Jones My experience at Ringling was very cool. It had a lot of what I was looking for; stylish people that have a thought of what they want to do, amazing diversity in art (basically every type of art you can think of), and a wonderful creative environment to work in. I mean the people there were pretty cool. Jazill, our tour guide, was super cool. Jazill told us about where she came from and how she came to Ringling and why. Along with Jazill, the whole campus is full of people like her. People who want to be artists in every type of way go to Ringling. We saw awesome exhibits of art and recent assignments of the students. It looked like a professional art gallery, with amazing, beautiful art in it. Also, the equipment that you are given to create beautiful masterpieces is pretty awesome. Definitely professional equipment everywhere you look. This place is there to help improve and educate the artist in all of us. Oh!!!...They even have a cafe! Almost like a legit McDonald’s hot spot. At Ringling I saw lots of different types of art. I saw paintings, portraits, abstracts, and there was even a Graffiti Wall. That’s what got me, it hooked me like a 50 pound Grouper. I loved it, it reminded me of the place where I came from. That’s where the diversity came in at. All kinds of art in one place. Just imagine when classes are out and the kids are out on the campus, being who they are. Plus, the class size is very small, perfect for an artist to be super creative. The student to teacher ratio is close to 12:1, pretty small but pretty awesome. The only downfall to my liking of Ringling was all about the money. It is very expensive to go, but if you do go, you are guaranteed to have a pretty good life after Ringling. Again this place is there to magnify the outlook of the artist in all of us. I sure hope the scholarships they have can pay for a good chunk of the mullah part of college. All in all, Ringling School of Art and Design is a perfect place for an artist to be, well, an artist. They have everything you need to become the next Picasso, Dali, or even Van Gogh. The new and fresh opportunities they give you to accomplish your dream’s, is an excellent choice at Ringling School of Art and Design. Spring2012

Jesus Moreira During my experience at Ringling College of Art and design, I was truly astounded. It’s kind of amazing that everywhere you go, there is this “creative atmosphere” for every student. The students there clearly showed an outstanding high level of commitment. Throughout the 48-acre campus, there was a beautiful tropical landscape that simply blended in with all the other buildings, sculptures, and beautiful artwork. Ringling simply believes that, “When you’re inspired, there is no limit to what you can do.” Knowing this, everywhere you go there are all sorts of facilities for students to actually engage in this unbelievable creative process. There are Spring2012

studios, galleries, residence halls, apartments, computer labs, and the list goes on. Sometimes, you can find students working on creative projects inside the labs as early as three in the morning. Another unique thing about Ringling is that they provide every student with a free MacBook pro once they are enrolled. This would effectively enable them to engage in the creative process at any time of the day. The MacBook Pro comes with a complete software package along with some other bonuses. Hence, this means that students would have available to them Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and many other applications at any time of the day. In the midst of all this, Ringling offers Bachelor’s Degree programs in fields such as Advertising CAACADEMYMAGAZINE

design, Illustration, Game Art & Design, Computer Animation, and plenty more. During my tour experience however, we encountered one of the instructors from Ringling. He rapidly asked our tour group if anyone was interested in motion design and of course, some of us were interested. Doing this inevitably caused us to end up in a stop-motion animation computer lab. The lab was equipped with everything one would ever need for the job. The instructor stood there speaking passionately about what went on in the computer lab and we all just stood there with awe-inspiring looks on our faces. In the end, I think this simple tour has been quite an insightful experience for not only me, but for all of my classmates. I truly hope we continue to do things like these every year. Page_24

Selena Quier My adventure at Ringling College of Art and Design was fantastic. The atmosphere there was really nice and relaxing. You could tell everyone knew their place at that school. I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I got older but when we were there and were able to walk around I got an idea. I really liked the animation floor and watching the students there do what they love and how they were all really good at what they did. It made me realize that I need to keep practicing my drawing to get better.

This year, students from SkillsUSA participated in the annual Trick Or Treat Street. The reason for having this event was to give little children a fun and safe way to go trick or treating without having to go out late at night. We had several different day care programs participate by bringing the children to the experience, as well as family members of the faculty and students’ families. All the children who participated enjoyed their time seeing the older children dressed up in silly costumes. The other clubs who participated had

different booths with activities from toss across to a nifty science experiment making sticky putty. The experience was rewarding because it gave us a way to help little children experience a fun event with different types of activities as well as tasty treats to take home. It was a fun and exciting experience for those of us who participated.
