Not just for kids Newly reopened Children’s Museum of Virginia lets families play together BY SUSAN SMIGIELSKI ACKER

The 72,000-square-foot facility was two years in the making — time well spent in my opinion, based on a recent visit. The family destination has something for the toddler as well as the child approaching middle school. “The whole idea behind the museum is for parents and children to engage with each other as a family, to really play together, said education coordinator, Christyne Matyseck. The museum is divided into sections, and visitors will remember some of the same concepts previously displayed, but with a more concentrated emphasis. The ever popular bubble area allows children to pull a bubble around themselves, and explore other ways of making bubbles. One area sure to be popular is the kid size city known as Beazley Street, in honor of the Beazley Foundation, which was a major contributor to the renovations. Lynette P. James, marketing coordinator for the mu-

seums of Portsmouth, said the city is designed not just for play, but to educate. For instance, the doctor’s and dentist’s offices offer several areas to teach about basic body parts and hygiene. The grocery store, not only sells food, but the back portion features a play area that shows the farm origins of food. A cow is available to milk, vegetables to be pulled from the ground and eggs to be gathered from a chicken. Off to the side is a diner for kids to put together a balanced meal. The city has a music store, complete with several home made style instruments to bang. There is a library which offers a comfy sofa and books, and a bank where kids can learn to write checks and play money. The veterinarian’s office has toy doctor’s tools and stuffed pets. The museum teaches children (and adults) about the local area with shipping container operations and a boat where children can fish for pretend fish. “The idea behind this area is for children to enjoy role playing in jobs, Matyseck said.

Other areas for fun and roll playing include the cab of a fire truck, a city bus and a police motorcycle. The first floor includes an elaborate toy train display donated by the Lancaster Family. The model takes the train around Virginia. A toddler area for children under the age of three has soft play areas including a large nest and eggs. The second floor is home to a special home exhibit called My Backyard and Beyond. Visitors enter through a porch and walk through a backyard full of plants and animals. There is an area to learn about the water cycle as well as the night sky. The carnival side show attracts visitors attention with a nearly life size model elephant that is also an activity where children can learn about the advantages of various types of pulleys. The art gallery shows classic works and allows children to create their own works of art, both temporary and permanent. The area includes a mock stage complete with costumes, various lighting and sets, as well as puppets and a puppet theatre for children to create their own show. Later this fall the museum is expected to add a planetarium and later this summer a temporary exhibit about kangaroos will be on hand. Matyseck said families should plan to spend the entire day at the museum to fully enjoy it.

Faith also brought “finger paint projects home at least once every two weeks when she was at a Christian preschool in Chesapeake, Holt says. “Evidently the teachers don’t mind because they can create “with 12 kids at once. For me that would be quite overwhelming. Some of those messier activities, like finger painting and making your own modeling dough from scratch, often happen in preschool settings, where teachers and kids can get down and messy, and the “fun serves a developmental purpose. “You don’t have to do anything to get them all excited, said Teacher Sue Nelson, a preschool teacher at Virginia Beach Friends School

off Laskin Road in Virginia Beach. “They are natural scientists and explorers and hands-on is what motivates children. That’s why parents can tap into their child’s energy and natural curiosity by doing some of those creative projects that don’t cost a lot and provide hours of fun at home this summer, during warm weather and vacation time. At Friends School, messy activities run the gamut. Easy, do-it-yourself fun includes buying low-odor shaving cream, covering a table, preferably one with a color top, and letting the children shaving-cream paint. Friends’ school students also get to

Stir this mixture slowly in with the boiling water and let it boil for a few more minutes. Newspaper strips can be dipped into the paste and used to cover balloons, or make masks, which can later be decorated any way a child wants.

blow bubbles with home-made soap - made with water and dishwashing soap, either Dawn or Joy, Nelson says. “Then you can explore with all types of household kitchen utensils to see what (the mixture) will blow through and make bubbles with, she said. Parents can also create their own tool to make bubbles with a circle of string about 8-10 inches long tied together and connected to a straw, which

serves as the handle. Putting the circle of string in the soap mixture and then taking it out and waving it like a straw produces bubbles, Nelson says. How about sidewalk chalk? It comes in many different colors and children love to spend hours getting their inner Jackson Pollock on outside their houses. Nelson suggests getting a bucket filled with water and a paint brush (like you use on your walls) and letting the kids see what happens when they put water on their drawings and swish it around with the brush. Cognitively, these messy projects help children go from mastering large motor skills to small ones, Nelson says. “They start out by doing big movements, then move to smaller movements. “Not only are the exploring basic scientific concepts, that we take for granted as adults that are miraculous for them, they’re building their fine motor skills. At Building Blocks Preschool off Jerome Avenue in Norfolk, a simple mixture of water and flour makes a paper mache paste that can smother a balloon, which children can later paint. These projects help build a child’s self-esteem, says Ramona Richards, Building Blocks’ assistant director and kindergarten teacher. “It’s the process, not the product, Richards says. “They feel a sense of accomplishment from it. You want to let them be a part of it. Plus, “parents, end up enjoying more seeing something a little lopsided, something not quite right instead of something picture perfect because it means their son or daughter was the artist who made the project, Richards says. At the Children’s Center off Executive Court in Suffolk, 2-year-olds actually get to eat family style and serve each other food. “A lot of parents don’t like when their 2-year-olds serve food, acknowledged LaTanya Barksdale, the center’s Early Head Start lead teacher. “We teach them how to sit at a table,

how to eat, and “how to wait until everyone gets their food on their plate before they can eat. “They’re 2, they’re going to spill stuff, but, Barksdale says, “they actually take turns, they have to wait. The center also is growing cucumber and tomato plants to show children where their food comes from. Although the seeds were already sowed to these plants, which the children take turns watering, Barksdale says that children can get down and dirty by planting the seeds themselves, watering them and watching them grow. “They play as they learn, Barksdale says. What you need to do

What you need to do

Mix one cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar together. After, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and one cup of water with the food coloring (powdered, paste or liquid) of your choice.

iHeat 1 &1/2 cups water in a saucepan; add 2 packets of unflavored gelatin, and the remove from heat. Stir until gelatin dissolves. Pour into any type of mold, sprayed with nonstick spray, and refrigerate until firm.

Cook in a sauce pan on a stove, stirring constantly so the bottom doesn’t get scorched. Play dough emerges when the mixture is no longer sticky and will pull away from sides (sort of like mashed potatoes). Turn the mass out onto wax paper and knead it a little, until thoroughly mixed. “It’s at tried and true recipe that works great!â€? The emphasis on just uppercase letters, one parent tester notes, is a good way to help a child focus and not get overwhelmed by too many lessons. “As an educator, I liked the fun, innovative way the workbook presented itself,” says NAPPA education judge Michelle Davis Seyller. “The illustrations on each page made the child want to continue working with it.”

Diet Drama: Feed Your Body! Move Your Body! Love Your Body!

The Baby Nurse Bible: Secrets Only a Baby Nurse Can Tell You About Having and Caring for Your Baby

By Nancy Redd; Gotham Books, 2010; $22.50; www.penguin.com. This New York Times bestselling author brings a light touch to the serious topic of diets and body image for young women in this approachable food and exercise book. The result, says nutritionist and NAPPA judge Sheila Globus, is a book that’s right on the money and “shows them that getting a handle on their health is doable, no matter who they are or what they weigh.”

Good for the Planet World Without Fish

By Mark Kurlansky, illustrated by Frank Stockton; Workman Publishing, 2011; $16.95; www.workman.com. This book has been called the Silent Spring for a new generation, and that’s not an exaggeration. Unlike most ecological books for young readers, it’s neither preachy nor condescending, but uses straightforward, powerful writing to pull the reader into caring about the perilous state of our oceans and sea life. The nontraditional format, including sections in graphic-novel form, keeps this fact-filled book lively. And Kurlansky brings you right into the worlds he’s writing about, whether under-sea with the fish or above with the fisherman.

TeenLife Media

TeenLife Media; Free; www.teenlife.com. A unique, much-needed publication, affiliated with an info-packed website, Teen Life provides teenagers and their parents with resources for recreation, education and community service. The Guide to Gap Year Programs, for example, is an excellent blend of essays, listings and resources about the growing trend among young adults to participate in a service or adventure year after high school. The website section on summer jobs and internships, like all the writing in Teen Life, is geared to a teen audience without trying too hard to be hip.

there’s more online Check out all of the 2011 NAPPA Parenting Resources Gold and Honors winners for more great gifts and sanitysaving resources! Head online to www.NAPPAawards.com.

By Carole Kramer Arsenault, RN, IBCLC; The Experiment, LLC, 2011; $15.95; http://theexperimentpublishing.com. The next-best thing to having your mom or a live-in nurse is this practical and comprehensive tome, designed to answer a new parent’s burning questions about pregnancy, babies and postpartum issues. Arsenault, a longtime labor and delivery nurse at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, compiled this book, which parenting judge Johanna Myers McChesney gives top marks for its Q&A format and solid advice.

The Big Book of Parenting Solutions: 101 Answers to Your Everyday Challenges and Wildest Worries By Michele Borba, Ed.D.; Jossey-Bass, an Imprint of John Wiley & Sons, 2009; $19.95; www.josseybass.com.

Despite its size (almost 700 pages), this big book is easy to navigate, thanks to its complete index and logical organization. Borba earns her status as a celebrity parent educator as she tackles everyday issues like emotional oversensitivity and manners, as well as extreme situations like substance use and learning disabilities. The introduction sets the stage by explaining how people change, and the focus throughout the book is on a powerful concept that Borba calls “the change to parent for.”

Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share

By Ken Denmead; Gotham Books, 2010; $17; www.penguingroup.com. Let your geek flag fly! Ken Denmead has turned his GeekDad blog for Wired. com into a book packed with cool activities. Whether you think of yourself as a geek or not, you’ll be saying “gee whiz” to many of these ideas. Denmead proudly takes on the mantle of geeky dad, which to him means having a big imagination, loving science and how things work, and never fully growing up. Projects are broken down by cost, difficulty and duration, so it’s easy to decide whether to take on the cyborg jack-o-lanterns, homemade fireflies, nighttime kite flying or light-up wallet made from duct tape.

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves By Naomi

Aldort; Book Publishers Network; $18; www.authenticparent.com. Naomi Aldort is an eloquent proponent of the simple idea that children need love and validation, rather than control and behavior modification. The result is the disappearance of power struggles and the emergence of closeness and cooperation. Aldort teaches parents how to listen effectively when children express strong feelings, and how to recover their ability to love, validate and offer comfort to their children when they, themselves, are upset.

Recipes! Simple Foods for Busy Families By Jeannette Bessinger,

CHHC, and Tracee Yablon-Brenner, RD, CHHC; Real Food Moms, 2009; $19.99; www.RealFoodMoms.com.

Getting meals on the table can be one of a parent’s most daunting daily tasks which is why parent testers and judges gave this 256-page, nicely illustrated book the thumbs up. “A food book with good visuals is a big plus for me,” says NAPPA judge and nutritionist Sheila Globus. Nutrition educators Jeannette Bessinger and Tracee Yablon-Brenner, aka “the Real Food Moms,” offer practical recipes and bring a healthy, holistic approach to the art of feeding the family. The authors explore everything from how to reverse common cravings to a tantalizing array of simple, nutritious meals.

meet the judges NAPPA salutes the team of specialty judges, family testers and veteran parenting editors who, under lead judge Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., named the winners of the 2011 NAPPA Parenting Resources competition. Fifteen specialty judges from leading institutions across North America joined NAPPA this year. Together with their teams of professionals, their collective expertise focused on pregnancy and lactation, pediatric and chiropractic health, dermatology, injury prevention, nutrition and fitness, child development, education and technology, and special needs. Finally, dozens of family testers also played a key role in choosing this year’s Gold and Honors winners. We thank all of our judges and testers!

What you need to do for pizza Adults should preheat oven to 350F. Kids can place pizza dough on a lightly greased baking sheet; use a homemade dough, commercial dough, or prepared pizza crust. Kids can measure out all ingredients. Kids can combine the melted butter and vanilla in a small bowl and brush the mixture across the dough. Kids can combine the sugars and spices in a small bowl and sprinkle across the dough. If desired, kids can sprinkle chopped nuts across the dough. Adults should place the pizza in the oven and bake for between 10 and 15 minutes, checking to make sure crust is golden and topping is bubbling. Kids can prepare the Glaze Dipping Sauce while the pizza is cooking. Adults should remove the pizza from the oven and allow to sit about five minutes before cutting in long strips both vertically and horizontally to create bitesized pieces for eating and dipping.

What you need to do for glaze dipping sauce Kids can measure out powdered sugar and place in a large bowl. Kids can measure out milk and add to the powdered sugar and use a whisk to gently stir and moisten powdered sugar. If the mixture remains too dry, kids can add additional milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached. Use for dipping slices of pizza.

“Yes, she said. “I want to buy some candy. “Did you tell Mom know about this plan? I asked. My wife might not know it, but she’s in charge of this kind of thing. I see myself as more of a consultant. “No, Mom went shopping with Aunt Amy. “Welllllll, I said, weighing Wendy’s chances for survival. I factoredin the variables: The supermarket is seven blocks away. She’d have to cross one semi-dangerous road. She’s pretty cautious about traffic and strangers. Half the people in town know her. Her bicycling skills are OK... I couldn’t call it a sure thing,

but the trip seemed like something she could pull off. “OK,” I said, “But first I have to tell you something.” I drew her down onto a step. “When you make a mistake around the house, maybe a dish gets broken. But when you make a mistake on the road, you get run over and killed, and there’s no more You. And we couldn’t bear that.” She was squirming a little and nodding impatiently, but we had eye contact. “So ride on the sidewalk when you can, and WALK your bike when you cross Harrison Street. Got that?” “Got it,” she said, and departed. The scene reminded me of a situation that arose a couple of months earlier. My oldest daughter Marie, age 16, wanted to go with some friends to pay an overnight visit to a friend at a college about 60 miles away. The driver would be a 17-year-old boy named Matt. He is not Marie’s boyfriend. The owner of that distinction was away on a class trip to Europe (YES!!), so the issue wasn’t sex. It was, once again, safety. I had read too many tragic newspaper stories involving inexperienced and distracted young drivers and I was scared. “I’ll let you go on one condition,” I said. “Matt has to come and see me for a brief talking-to.” “Dad,” she said, “There’s no time for that. Can’t you do it over the phone?” “Marie,” I said, “I’m really not crazy about whole plan. But I’m especially not crazy about a new driver going places that he’s unfamiliar with and probably getting lost and confused, with a couple of jolly passengers to distract him. No, the face-

56 | J U L Y 2 0 1 1 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

to-face Grim Talk is the best deal I can make.” I was at the office when Matt and Marie dropped in on their way out of the county. Faced with the occasion and the kids, I felt self-conscious and embarrassed, but there was no turning back. We three sat down in the conference room, and I told Matt about those tragic news stories in some detail, and reminded him, “You’ll be holding in the palm of your hand the life of one of the most important people in the world.” Matt’s expression was apprehensive, yet sympathetic. He understood my situation. I went on: “When I was your age I drove fast and erratically. I used the car as an instrument of self-expression. I didn’t realize the enormous responsibility that a driver has. Do you?” “Don’t worry,” he said solemnly. “I’ll be VERY careful.” “Thanks, Matt,” I said. We stood up and I shook his hand. Marie looked relieved. Maybe she had feared I’d demand a cash deposit to hold against her safe return, or ask him sign something in blood or repeat some kind of pledge - all good ideas, but I had to get back to work and they had places to go. Well, Wendy and Marie both returned from their adventures unharmed. What a relief to be done with THAT! With these successes to cherish, I’m counting on the girls to ease up, stick close to home, and live life a little further back from the brink. It’s the least they can do for a nervous old man, who hasn’t done a single scary thing in 20 years - except for having children.

Usually, it’s the top of the refrigerator or on top of one of the various hutches that inhabit three of the rooms in our house. The toy is put there and usually forgotten as we escort the offending party - to claims of “I didn’t do anything” or “He hit me first with an apple!” or “This never happened to Batman!” - to the timeout spot. This means that, depending on our children’s moods and how much they are currently into the crazy amount of plastic food in our house, we could end up with more plastic food on top of our fridge than real food in our fridge. It makes sense to me to remove the “weapons” in question and put them somewhere that out kids can’t reach. It’s like the police making sure the criminal kicks their weapon away before coming closer to frisk them. By eliminating the “weapon” from the field of play, I have now made sure that I won’t all of a sudden find a banana spinning at my forehead. I had to pause, however, when a neighbor told me that he and his wife did the same thing until their two boys - about the same age as ours - took to climbing on to their kitchen counters and then scaling the fridge to retrieve whatever toy has been taken away and then put up there. While I looked to see if my kids had heard this - they hadn’t - I wondered if one day I would be trying to talk down one of my boys who had somehow made it to the top of our dining room hutch and was now too scared to come back down. But thankfully our 7-year-old and 3-year-old don’t see our furniture as a chance to practice their rock wall scaling skills yet. They are more content with running as fast as they can and then launching themselves at the couches and loveseats in our house. They seem

to think anything that’s padded or cushioned is worth crashing into. Perhaps they will grow up to be mattress testers. The sad part of all this is that some of the toys our boys love get forgotten and we don’t find them again until either my wife or I lose something and we think that perhaps, in a fit of craziness, one of us decided to put the checkbook on top of the fridge or our car keys on top of a hutch that’s above our heads. We never do those things, but when I lose something important I’m always ready to check everywhere, even the ridiculous places. But because we do eventually take a look at the various toy exile locations, we find these toys, sometimes covered in nice coating of dust, which our boys once loved and, if we decided to clean the toys and then release them back into the wild, could be loved again. It’s a decision we have to make. Is this Lincoln Log going to be used to build something constructive and help one of our boys grow up to be architect or will it be turned into a cruise missile and get lodged in one of their ears? Will this Tinkertoy be used to build a bridge or will it be turned into a ninja knife? These are the types of questions parents have to ask themselves all the time. No wonder we’re all burned out. I feel bad for the toys, as if by putting them in exile that I’ve removed their reason for being, but because our boys are budding weapons designers my wife and I must have this policy. One might think that it might be a good idea to just throw away the offending toy, but we remain ever hopeful that one day - perhaps when they are teenagers - our children will not think that Nerf footballs are bombs of any sort. Until that day, toy exile is in full effect.
