MOCA and the Boardwalk Art Show History In 1952, a small group of artists presented an outdoor art show at the boardwalk, with the proceeds benefiting a fellow artist who was ill. Those artists later formed an organization which is today the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). In 1956, the first official Boardwalk Art Show was held. Top prize was $25 and 104 artists participated. Today, Best in Show wins $7,500 and the Boardwalk show is ranked as one of the top 50 outdoor art shows in the country. The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a non-profit institution. MOCA’s mission is to promote exploration and understanding of the significant art of our time. So while you won’t see Old Masters, you’re guaranteed to see something cutting edge and different each time you visit! MOCA also offers a variety of educational programs and classes for the community. Visit www.virginiamoca.org for more information. ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

57TH BOARDWALK ART SHOW presented by SunTrust
A Message from Leroy Abrahams PRESIDENT and CEO of SUNTRUST BANK, HAMPTON ROADS
Welcome to the 2012 Boardwalk Art Show presented by SunTrust Bank! SunTrust Bank is pleased to be the presenting sponsor again of this year’s show. SunTrust’s mission “to help people and institutions prosper” is reflected in the organizations supported by SunTrust each year. SunTrust recognizes that giving through these worthwhile programs is the foundation for helping our communities prosper. That is why SunTrust contributes to initiatives and organizations that provide arts and culture, community and civic services, education programs and health and welfare assistance that impact hundreds of thousands of lives. These are investments in the community and they tie directly to the Mission of the bank. All SunTrust teammates bring this same commitment and dedication to every client interaction. We invite you to visit us for all your financial needs. It’s our honor to help you achieve your banking and investment goals. This 57-year-old event offers the works of nearly 300 fine artisans spread over 12 blocks on the beautiful boardwalk of Virginia Beach. The Best in Show Award will present a $7,500 prize which is funded by the Virginia Beach Hotel Motel Association. This year’s festival also features The VIP Club, a tented oasis located on the boardwalk and beach at 31st street – offering gourmet lunches provided by Steinhilber’s – and a beer garden located at 24th Street Park, offering refreshments and a relaxing place for mingling with other show attendees. When you couple all of those activities with great food from the show’s new Culinary Row presented by WAVY TV 10, you are sure to have a memorable experience (and maybe take home one or two works of art!). A special thank you goes to the hard-working staff of the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), who produces the Boardwalk Art Show, and to the over 250 volunteers required to staff the event. Thanks for being a part of the 2012 Boardwalk Art Show. Please enjoy every aspect of this incredible event. Sincerely,
Leroy Abrahams President and CEO SunTrust Bank, Hampton Roads Region 2 57th BOARDWALK ART SHOW

“Studying” Oceanography Your favorite teacher can pretend she’s doing research for this fall’s science class when she heads to the beach, but she’ll do what most grown women want to do in the sand: Spread out a towel, rub on some sunscreen, and read. Set her up with a towel from Target ($10), Rachael Ray’s Everyday ($4.99) and Neutrogena’s top protection ($7.09), all wrapped in a colorful ribbon from Hancock Fabric, Great Bridge Shopping Center ($2.09.)
My boy has worked hard this year, but on more than a few occasions, I’ve seen drawings on the side of his homework and a comic strips on extra s sheets of paper in his ’t notebook. If you can’t beat ‘em...I figure I m might as well join him g, in his love of drawing, nce and encourage it, since schools e for art class don’t have much time of-school gift these days. His end-of-school is a drawing kit with instructions upplies and ($24.99) and some supplies lots and lots of paperr ($4.99). At Michael’s.
A
LL THAT homework, all those tests, and now,
finally, it’s time to take a break: School is over! Let’s start summer right by thanking teachers and students alike (especially those students who live in
your house) with little gifts they can use to have fun and relax.
Hair we go After a year of straightening hair almost every day, my daughter is experimenting with new looks and fun styles. This InStyle specialedition magazine ($4.99), the yellow hair extension ($2 at Party City) and clips ($4.50 at Target) should give her lots of options for at least a few days this summer.

D’art Center Some museums and art centers can be intimidating for kids, with their low-light rooms and hovering security guards. Children can come away feeling as if art is inaccessible, but not at d’art, downtown Norfolk’s artist-in-action center. Dozens of artists both display work and create new beauty in their open studios, and you
and your kids can watch them, maybe ask questions and be inspired to try your own efforts - all for free. Make the experience extra special by researching the artists first at http://www.d-artcenter.org/meet_ the_artists.html, thinking of things to ask, and using your $20 to purchase paper and pencils so you can sketch your own art.

Norfolk Botanical Garden
Chesapeake Planetarium
Saturday Summer Street Fest Series
Flowers, ponds, meandering walkways, a tram ride, perfect access to planes taking off, and maybe best of all, a mini-water park? It’ll be worth it to go just a bit over budget at this beautiful garden. With the online coupon (http://www. norfolkbotanicalgarden.org/planyour-visit/tickets-and-tours/coupon), you and two kiddies can visit for $23. A better deal yet: Plan to go every few weeks this summer, and purchase the family membership (up to 6 people!) for $85. There’s definitely enough there for six visits in a year (especially if you and your children love to take pictures of nature), and you’ll be ahead of the game financially.
The planetarium near City Hall welcomes school kids and the general public throughout the year to learn about the world above us, its history and its current-day changes. On Thursday nights, learn from area experts, view movies and sometimes see the night sky starting at 8 p.m. This summer’s program will include the constellations of the season and some of the mythology related to the stars. Learn how to locate and identify parts of the sky with small telescopes and binoculars and so much more. Call 547-0153 for complete details, a schedule, and reservations. The price: Free, free, free. If you’d like to spend your money, there’s a Dairy Queen right around the corner that’s open late.
Head to Queensway in Hampton any Saturday night until Sept. 1 from 6 to 11 p.m. and the whole family can have fun for free. Adults will enjoy live music and the kids can have fun with face painting, inflatable bouncers and other fun activities from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Use your funds for a lemonade or two for the kids and an adult beverage for yourself - or just save it for another day’s activities! Planners are helping you with your budget, too, by offering free rides on the BID bus between Peninsula Town Center and Downtown Hampton from 12 p.m. to 2 a.m. (Not that it’s a great idea to keep the kids out that late - but you could plan a sans-kiddo evening at least one time.)

Mount Trashmore The name will make you giggle, and yes, there is some trash in Virginia Beach’s highest natural point, but the kids will love this “mountain” just the same. They’ll spend a ton of time running up and down it, and you can join them or just watch from the top as they wear themselves out! Walk the 1.4 mile trail, play on the playground, skateboard or fish, too, and you can spend your $20 on food, a kite and sunscreen. Learn more at http://www. virginia.org/Listings/OutdoorsAndSports/MountTrashmorePark.
Virginia Beach Amusement Park Think old-fashioned fun, by the beach, on the cheap. At 15th Street and Atlantic, you can enjoy your favorite fair rides every day this summer from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. (keep those late nights for special occasions!). The park has rides for all ages, and some are just a few dollars each. Discount tickets are available at Holiday Dept. Stores on 12th, 20th, 29th and Atlantic Ave. and at Harris Teeter on 28th and Arctic Ave. Phone 422-2307 for information.
Regent Reads
Cinema Café
Regent University embraces the theme “Everyday Heroes” with books, movies, readings and discussions in the school’s main library, all free of charge. The summerlong event kicks off with Everyday Heroes from Judaism, July 12 and continues with Everyday Heroes from Latin America on July 19, Everyday Heroes from Africa on July 26, and Everyday Heroes from the Middle East and Asia on August 2. All activities taken place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. See www.regent.edu/events/regent_ reads/
The sweltering heat of summer is great - at first. But by mid-summer, you’re often looking for a break from the heat and something to take your mind off it. Cinema Café offers reducedprice movies at some locations (the most expensive at Greenbrier Mall is just $3.99) and the most comfortable seats, plus an extensive menu of meals so that Mom can get a break from making lunch or dinner.
Northwest River Park Head to Chesapeake for in-theshade kayaking, canoeing or paddle boating in a small, calm lake (it leads to the much bigger river but isn’t attached to it) and you’ll stay well within your budget. Kayak and canoe rentals are just $6 an hour and paddle boats $5 for a half hour. Bring a picnic lunch; enjoy it after your time on the water, and then head over for a round of mini-golf for $2 a game. You can also walk the trails and play on several playgrounds, all for free. See http://www.cityofchesapeake.net/Government/City-Departments/Departments/Parksand-Recreation-Department/ parks/nwrp.htm?
Free Bowling Kids in Newport News and Hampton can bowl free every day this summer - and even play two games each day. It’s safe, fun and cool, and even if the ball goes in the gutter over and over again, you still have a good time laughing at yourself and each other. You’ll need bowling shoes, but they’re usually under $3 for rentals and that’ll leave you with lots of money left over for a bite to eat. Details at www. kidsbowlfree.com.

why cabbage leaves? According to a report in the medical journal Birth, researchers studied both a control group and a group of women who used cabbage leaves to help reduce soreness from breastfeeding. After six weeks, the women who applied cabbage leaves to their breasts between nursing sessions were more likely to still be breastfeeding exclusively, and they breastfed significantly longer than women in the control group.
Mom’s dreams of natural childbirth and breastfeeding are dashed, but it’s OK BY KATHY SENA

The researchers concluded that the use of cabbage leaves resulted in fewer women giving up breastfeeding. They added that extensive anecdotal evidence from nursing and midwifery experts also supports the use of cabbage for this purpose. One reason for cabbage’s effectiveness may be that sulfur in the amino acid methionine (found in cabbage leaves) increases blood flow to the area. This dilates the capillaries, relieves the engorgement and inflammation and allows the mother’s milk to flow more freely. (The authors neglected to mention one side effect: It makes Mom smell as if she’s been swimming in a vat of coleslaw.)

Adults should cut chicken, parsley, celery, bell pepper and onion and put aside. Kids can measure out yogurt, jam, orange juice, and black pepper and put them in a large bowl and whisk the ingredients to combine them well. Kids can measure out the cooked chicken, parsley, celery, bell pepper, onion, and raisins and stir them in the yogurt mixture well to coat completely. Kids can cover the bowl and put in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours before serving. The salad can be spooned over lettuce, or tucked in lettuce for wraps. It can also be rolled in tortillas or spread on buns or bread for sandwiches. Makes about 6 servings.

Experience the Montessori Difference
Now Enrolling For 2012-2013 Montessori is a scientific method of education utilizing hands on materials to teach small groups and individual students. Montessori classrooms are characterized by multi age grouping, student chosen individualized work, (which is guided and directed by a teacher) and student mentors in a collaborative, peaceful environment. Scientific studies indicate that Montessori education leads to students with better academic and social skills. The Montessori Academy absolutely makes this innovative philosophy possible in our community, with their well trained certified faculty and administration.

When it’s your child, it’s never minor surgery.
F
or more than 50 years, parents have trusted Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters to care for seriously ill or
injured children. And that same level of care is also available when children need ear tubes, ACL
repairs and eye surgeries. CHKD’s unique surgery program is dedicated exclusively to infants, children and teens. Our surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and technicians have a level of pediatric training and experience unmatched in this region. And we know all about making children comfortable with extras, like flavored anesthesia, video games and taking beloved “friends into surgery. So if your child needs surgery, ask for a referral to a CHKD surgeon. To find a listing of surgeons by specialty, go to chkd.org and click on “Find a Doctor.
