picture perfect This bird has already flown onto a shelf in my family room, and will soon be holding a picture of my family taken this fall. Love his many colors, and his “family” comes in many more as well. $4.99 at Pier One, throughout Hampton Roads.

bird by bird Maybe if I can learn to draw at least a little bit, I can stop buying birds and create my own. Illustration School: Let’s Draw Cute Animals is a book geared toward kids, but everyone can learn from it. Hopefully even me. $7.98 at Barnes & Noble, throughout Hampton Roads.

E

VERYONE CALLS IT TURKEY DAY, but for me November is bird month. I’ve also been drawn to all types of birds (my family room features one painting and two figurines right now), and here are

a few more finds that guests will soon discover around my house.

out on a limb This wise owl was made for baby strollers,, but I think he’d be just as happy hanging from a branch in my front yard. With his blue and green wings, he’ll stand out in the changing leaves -- and he has chimes inside so each gust of wind will now include a bit of music. $8.95 at Barnes & Noble, throughout Hampton Roads.

Gifts that give back The right present brings smiles to many faces BY KRISTEN DE DEYN KIRK

the better for mom to see you with... You’ve probably heard of TOMS and their shoegiving program: for every pair they sell, they also donate a pair. They do the same with their sunglasses. Let your family know that they can “see you become a very cool, concerned mom by getting you a pair. Learn more at www.toms.com/eyewear/.

art classes A few years back, my husband and I signed up our children for a pottery class at d’art Center in downtown Norfolk. The kids loved the two or so hours they spent creating pottery, and we loved both the time we spent at local restaurants waiting for them and all the beautiful creations they brought home. I think each made 20 different projects in eight weeks. Another round of classes will start soon. Details are at www.d-artcenter.org/childrens_classes.html for details.

a museum membership We are blessed with dozens of excellent, family-friendly museums in Hampton Roads, and a membership means you can go anytime for “free. Most of the museums hold special family days with lots of hands-on activities and new exhibits on a regular basis. See our calendar for a sampling of all the fun you can join in on.

...and more gifts that give back

Family fun and fitness You’ve heard the statistics about childhood obesity and all the problems it can cause. The same goes for adults. Take action in a fun and fast way by joining the YMCA. You can break the annual fee into monthly payments and participate in dozens of classes and activities, together as a family and individually. Give this gift with a basketball, a water bottle, a runner’s watch or a cool workout outfit, and get your family members truly inspired. www.ymcahr.org.

Shop around You know you’d like to do something special for someone special, in honor of our special little one at home – but aren’t sure what? The site UniversalGiving.org is for you. Click through lots of opportunities from teaching kids to planting trees, and find the cause that speaks to you most. Then click a little more to donate, and your “shopping” will be done.

For your pet at home If you like to dress your pets in style and make the world better, shop at www.gifts thatgive.com/shop-by-category/pets.html this holiday season. The pet accessories are adorable, and each product sale leads to more money for charities. The website even shows you exactly how much will be donated.

Legos All right, this idea seems to fall in line with “traditional” gifts, but children will play with Legos for years and years, so they are so worth your hard-earned dollars. I’ve seen my boy put them away for a while, only to go back to them and rediscover the building blocks like they’re brand new. I’m told that the video equivalent is Mine Craft. Give a gift of both if you’d like to encourage creativity in reality and virtually.

For the dad who loves sports and wine The company Charity Wines has joined forces with baseball stars, football players and wrestlers to create a vintage-looking wine label featuring their images and give 70 percent of the profits from the wine sales to the players’ favorite charities. Prices start at $13.99 at www.eventwines.com/charity_wines_s/59.htm.

...And for a pet out in the wild Yes, you can “own” a whale and track his or her movements through the ocean, all from the comfort of your warm home this winter. Help protect these beautiful creatures and support research at https://whaleadoption.org/ adopt-east.aspx. Prices start at $30.

They get, you give If you’d still like to give your kids exactly what’s on their wish list, by all means, please do so – but in a new way. Check out BiddingforGood.com and eBayGivingWorks.com. These sites work like the auctions you’ve been to for schools and non-profit organizations. They feature popular donated items earmarked to pro fit a specific group, so you give to a worthy cause while your children get” what they want.

This is Nate. Once homeless and failing kindergarten, Nate now is thriving in a gifted and talented program thanks to ForKids, a United Way partner.

Thousands of children like Nate need your help in South Hampton Roads. Last year, more than 46,000 children and families received school tutoring, child care and support. More than 100,000 neighbors were rescued during emergencies, such as abusive situations, homelessness and financial hardship. And 12 million meals were distributed. Help us continue helping them.

preschool Helping kids cope with post-holiday letdown Children, like adults, can get caught up in the anticipation and excitement of the season and may experience post-holiday blues. Following are a few tips to help your child sail into the New Year with smile on his face. 1. Read together. Share your child’s favorite holiday books with him one last time before boxing them up for next year. 2. Ponder presents. Have your child line up his new toys and spend time together playing with each one. If some were given by family or friends who were not present when the gift was opened, take a photo of your child with that toy and send it along with a thank-you note. 3. Get moving. Take your child to the zoo, a park or for a brisk walk around the neighborhood to get some much-needed exercise. 4. Creation station. Sort through greeting cards, scraps of wrapping paper, ribbon and cardboard boxes and have a “Creation Station Day. Let your child cut, tape and tie holiday materials together. 5. Start a new project. If your child received a jewelry- or rocket-making kit, pull out the directions and work on it together. 6. Choose items for charity. Make room for new toys by sorting through old toys together and donating them to charity. 7. Create a holiday scrapbook. Collect cards, notes, letter and mementos and create a scrapbook that can be added to in years to come. Have your child draw a picture of his favorite part of the holiday season to include. 8. Create a new post-holiday tradition. Decide as a family on one thing you will do together the week after Christmas: go bowling, ice skating, play indoor golf or see a movie. Then make it an annual tradition. 9. Save it for a rainy day. If your child received more toys than what he’ll play with now, suggest putting several away and taking one out on the 25th day of each month that follows. 10. Have a pre-summer celebration. Remind your child that summer is only 179 days away. Have him don his swimsuit and celebrate with grilled burgers, baked beans and potato salad. Top it off with an ice cream party.

let’s talk My husband and I differ on whether or not to offer an allowance. He said chores are a part of being a member of the family. I think offering allowance helps children learn how to handle money. How can we resolve this? Next month’s question We are hosting a family holiday dinner. Every year, our three children, ages 14 to 9, complain about having to clean and prepare for company. They enjoy the party, but not the work before and after. I’m tired of the complaining. If you’d like to help readers solve a parenting challenge, or if you have a parenting challenge of your own, send your questions or responses to Jennifer O’Donnell, editor, at jenny.odonnell@ pilotonline.com.
