My daughter, age 12, has a close friend who has gained a lot of weight over the past year. She wants to talk to her about it without being mean. My daughter is aware of her friend’s health risk and wants to help. The parents are overweight. Since this is such a sensitive subject, I do not know how to advise her. What should I tell her? If you have a parenting questions of your own, or if you’d like to answer a question already asked, send your questions or responses to Susan Smigielski Acker, editor, at ss.acker@cox.net.

What you need to do Kids can help pop the popcorn and pour in a large, clean paper bag or a washable muslin bag. An adult should slice open the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape the seeds from both halves and put into a small bowl. The bean should be discarded. Kids can measure out the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, place in the small bowl with the vanilla bean seeds, and whisk together to incorporate. Kids can measure out the oil and vanilla extract, pour into a small bowl, and whisk together. Kids can open up the bag with the popcorn and drizzle the oil mixture slowly and evenly over the corn, then fold the top of the bag, and shake it well until the popcorn is coated and moist. Kids can then open up the bag, sprinkle the spice mixture over the corn slowly and evenly, fold the top of the bag over again, and shake it well to coat. Yields 4 quarts
