DISCOVER VIRGINIA, for over twenty years, has been providing FUN, OUTDOOR activities for kids from 6 to 12 years old! Each week offers a different combination of activities and every week we enjoy KAYAKING, FISHING, CRABBING, SWIMMING, HIKING and more! We are out all day, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM. Each day provides a different set of outdoor activities in a different scenic locale. We provide a daily natural fruit snack and unlimited ice cold water all day. Campers bring a backpack with needed gear, water bottles and lunch each day. We offer sessions every week from June through August. Our guides are experienced and professionally trained with safety as our first priority. Learning is a natural outcome, with no boring, formal or structured lectures as we wrap up each afternoon HAPPY AND TIRED! Over the years, thousands of parents have been pleasantly surprised by the wonderful stories their children tell about each day’s adventures. Check out the pictures on the website. Space is limited as we maintain our high “guide to camper” ratio with small groups each week. Weeks fill quickly every summer so register NOW. MORE THAN A GAME The First Tee of Hampton Roads, a program of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads is a youth development program teaching character education and life skills through the game of golf. We serve 23,000 youth in our region through our various programs and locations. The First Tee and the Y’s shared goal of helping youth reach their full potential has resulted in a partnership that helps our community grow and thrive. At The First Tee, we teach Nine Core Values: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy, and Judgment. In addition, we teach Nine Healthy Habits where children build confidence while developing the skills to become better citizens in the community. In a wholesome environment for children and families, we offer specialized classes and camps and teach our participants how to develop healthy habits while becoming active in a sport. And, if they love the game of golf, that is a bonus! Golf along with the life skills gained through our program, can be practiced for a lifetime. Part of our mission is to provide accessible, affordable programming to everyone in our community so financial assistance is offered based on eligibility thanks in part to generous donations through our Welcome to the Game campaign. Call 757-563-8990 or visit TheFirstTeeHR.org for more information.

Let the summer adventures begin! Fun, friendship, responsibility and challenges await your child this summer at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Summer Programs 2013. Multiple enrichment activities inspire campers to be creative and curious as they explore their interests in an active and collaborative learning environment. Here on the NSA campus, your child will build relationships and confidence as they create memories that will last forever. This year, our array of hands-on learning experiences is varied and includes academic enrichment, adventures in the great outdoors, interactive sports and games, new hobbies and exciting field trips offered to campers of all ages. Starting with the youngest Pre-Kindergarten campers in Papoose Camp to juniors and seniors taking SAT preparation courses, there is truly something for everyone. This year we are also adding to our resources and have invited a few outside experts to add variety to our camp offerings. Challenger Sports will be on campus to coach both a British and a Brazilian soccer camp and Rob Westcott of The Academy of Magic will teach a magic camp. Little Scholars from Richmond will also be here to conduct three camps that spark children’s thinking and imagination. Summer Programs will still offer some of our campers’ favorite specialty camps including rocketry, football and digital photography. Don’t miss the adventure!

DOs Do sign up. Camp is a great way to practice independence, make new friends, learn about teamwork, be creative and experience many new activities.
prepared with words of encouragement. Keep a positive attitude about the experience. Staff will let you know if things have gone beyond what they can handle.
Do encourage your child and reinforce how much fun he/ she will have at camp. Talk to her about the positive aspects such as swimming and making new friends.
Write frequently and cheerfully, your camper loves to get email or post mail at camp. Make sure you add the message to enjoy the camp.
Do involve your camper in the process of picking out a camp. The more they know, the more comfortable they will be. Do prepare your camper by discussing their fears and concerns.
Don’t tell her you don’t know what you will do without her or the house will not be the same, these things will only worry her.
Do follow the camp’s list of things to bring. Pack as light as possible. Pack something to be shared with everyone‌ such as a game or snack.
Don’t send food (chips), candy or gum.
Do put the camper’s name on EVERYTHING.
Don’t bribe your child to come to or stay at camp. Their success should bring them a new found confidence and independence, not be just because they wanted whatever the bribe was.
Let your child know you will be there to pick him/her up.
Do talk about the new people they will meet. Talk about how to be a good friend so they can make good friends.
Do address homesickness. Everybody misses home. Help them pick out something to give them comfort while away. Do show your confidence in them that they will be able to overcome their homesickness and have a great experience.
Do read all of the camp policies and Camp’s Code of Conduct. Encourage your camper to follow all camp rules. They are there to help everyone have a safe and enjoyable time.
Do be prepared for tears if they have to call home because of homesickness. Be
Don’t suggest she telephone home or give her a cell phone. Campers can’t call home, if the home missing is severe, the camp director will call you, so that a plan can be made to help your camper transition smoothly.
Do remember camp staff is trained and ready to help your camper with homesickness, safety, team building and fun.
Don’t let your fears and concerns keep you from a new experience.
Don’t plan an exit strategy in case you or your child gets homesick. Arrive at camp with a positive outlook. Unless their homesickness is severe, they will get past it. Encourage them to enjoy camp and make new friends. Don’t make your child feel like a failure if they can’t finish camp. Praise them for how much they accomplished and encourage them to try again.
Don’t advise them to break a few rules because that would be fun. Rules are there for everyone’s protection. Don’t tell them ghost or scary stories about camp. Camp staff already has their hands full trying to make everyone feel safe and calm so they can sleep at night. Don’t pack things on the “don’t bring list provided by your camp. Don’t over pack. The odds of getting everything back are lessened the more you pack. Don’t expect all socks and underwear to return home. No one claims them when they are left in the showers. Don’t pack bars of soap. If possible use liquid bath soap. Bars become a gooey mess no one wants to pick up and become a hazard when left on the floor. Don’t expect college staff to know how to handle extreme behavioral and social disorders. Make sure the camp you pick is trained for your child’s special needs and has a staff/camper ratio to ensure your child has their needs met. Don’t worry if you don’t receive mail from your camper right away. They are probably busy and having fun!

butterfly garden necessities Install native flowering plants as much as possible. Because many butterflies and native flowering plants have co-evolved over time and depend on each other for survival and reproduction, it is particularly important to install native flowering plants. Check with your local or state native plant society to be sure what you plant to attract butterflies is native to your region. Adult butterflies may mistake a non-native, invasive plant for a good egg-laying site, which could prevent the survival of its offspring. Grow nectar-producing native plants in sunny areas that are protected from strong winds. Plant color is important. Butterflies are attracted to red, yellow, orange, pink, and purple blooms. Different species like different colors, so plant a variety of colors.
Plant type is important. Butterflies like to stand as they feed because they taste with their feet. They prefer flat-topped or clustered blossoms that have ample space for landing and perching. Since their proboscis is average in length, butterflies like blooms that have short flower tubes. Plant for continuous bloom. Butterflies need nectar throughout the adult phase of their life span. Try to plant so that when one plant stops blooming, another begins. Avoid herbicides and pesticides. These lawn care and plant maintenance products contain chemicals that kill butterflies and other beneficial insects in both their adult and larval phases. Provide a place to rest. Butterflies need sun for orientation and to warm their bodies for flight.
Place flat stones in your garden to provide space for butterflies to rest and bask in the sun. Give them a place for puddling. Butterflies often congregate on wet sand and mud to partake in “puddling”, drinking water and extracting minerals from damp puddles. Place coarse sand in a shallow pan and then insert the pan in the soil of your habitat. Make sure to keep the sand moist. Get them to stay. To ensure that butterflies will take up residence in your habitat rather than just pass through, your garden should include host plants that serve as larval (caterpillar) food. Many caterpillars are picky eaters, preferring to eat only one species of plant, while others will eat a variety of host plants.

My son, age 7, plays well with other children in the neighborhood except when my best friend and her son, age 9, visit, which is a couple of times a month. This is when my son becomes almost a bully. It appears he is showing off to my friend’s son who can be a bit mean sometimes. How can I get him to play nice all the time? Next month’s question We have a sixmonth-old baby. Our son, nearly four years old, has begun not using the toilet and has gone so far to ask for a diaper. While we understand some of this is normal, he has been doing it for as long as baby has been home – six months! How can we get him to go back to using the toilet again? If you have a parenting questions of your own, or if you’d like to answer a question already asked, send your questions or responses to Susan Smigielski Acker, editor, at ss.acker@cox.net.
