In this first collaboration between Newbery award-winning author McKissack and the talented award-winning artist Cooper, the story of a single mother and her son show the love and strength of the mother and child bond. Young readers may find the story all the more poignant and powerful when they realize it is based on the life of McKissack’s grandmother and father. The author’s attention to detail gives Cooper a rich canvas to create illustrations. His use of grainy, muted tones perfectly capture the turn of the century. For ages 4 to 8 years old.

Ivy and her little brother want to surprise their sleeping mom with a special Mother’s Day breakfast. The biggest problem is they are too little to use anything in the kitchen. They try their best to fix something but end up spilling everything they touch. The look of surprise on Mom’s face when they arrive with her breakfast and her suggestion for making a Mother’s Day sandwich fill this book with warmth and remind young readers that it’s the thought that counts. Especially if Dad gets clean up duty. For ages 4 to 8 years old.

This classic novel is as true today as it was when it was first written. Having even made its way to the big screen, Rogers’ original story still captures the universal feeling of learning to walk in someone’s shoes. Annabel thinks her mother is too bossy. When something happens and the two switch bodies, both their worlds are turned upside down. From a battle of the bands to her mother’s engagement party, Annabel discovers her mother’s unconditional love is her own greatest strength. For ages 9 to 12 years old. The Mother’s Day sandwich / story by Jillian Wynot, illustrations by Maxie Chambliss.

Rex wants to “do something rather than “make something for Mother’s Day. With the help of his friends, Rex remodel’s his mother’s car much to her surprise. Of course, even though she had tried to convince him she only needed a hug, when all is said and done, his big hug is the best gift after all. Davis uses his artwork to create loveable dinosaurs and his colorful, cartoon-style illustrations and Grambling’s silly story will have children and adults laughing. For ages 5 to 9 years old. — Sharon Zoumbaris

Rey, contains nearly 80 original drawings, book mock-ups, personal photographs and documents. Organized by The Jewish Museum, New York, it is sponsored locally by the Simon Jewish Community Center and the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding at Old Dominion University. The exhibit is more than just a display of the authors’ early drawings, it is also tells the German Jewish couple’s story of escaping Paris, France, by bicycle right before the Nazis invaded in June 1940. During their escape, which took them through France, Spain, Portugal and Brazil, their belongings which included their early drawings were inspected. It is believed that when guards viewed their drawings of a friendly monkey, it brightened their mood and they allowed the couple to proceed -hence the

name of the exhibit Curious George Saves the Day. The couple settled in New York City in the fall of 1940 and began their career within one month when four of their manuscripts they brought with them were accepted for publication by publisher Houghton Mifflin. H.A. Rey died in 1977 and his wife died in 1996. Knowing their journey of escape and adventure, it is easy to see where many of the story lines for Curious George were derived. For instance, one book about modes of transportation harkens to their amazing journey by bike, train and ship to come to the United States, said the Chrysler Museum’s Chief Curator Jeff Harrison. “Once you know the background of the Reys, it really opens your eyes to the context of their books. You begin to understand that the adventures of Curious George were not pulled out of thin air, Harrison said. The couple worked together with H.A. Rey painting the vivid watercolor pictures and formulating the story. Margret Rey later developed it into a full plot. The exhibit at the Chrysler is very whimsical with bright colors. Pa-

trons begin by entering a display of a Parisian hotel moving further on other parts that show the Reys’ life together including time spent in Rio de Janeiro. Highlights include bright watercolors for Raffy and the 9 Monkeys which features a lonely giraffe and the monkeys that become his playmates. This is where Curious George makes his debut with his original name Fifi. The pictures will be hung at a child’s eye level for their easy viewing. “Even children in carriages will be able to see them, Harrison said. Historic background on the couple is available on a touch-screen computer plus a journal of the couple’s travel to safety and pictures. The display ends with a reading room complete with Curious George books, pillows and sofas, Harrison said. The Chrysler Museum brought the exhibit because they wanted something that would appeal to families with children. “We are really looking forward to this. It is going to be an eye-opening show, he said.

it’s your day, mom What local moms do with their “free” time BY ALISON JOHNSON When Rachael Brenneis says she has a “very active” 2-year-old, she’s not kidding. Her son likes to throw his toys and food, jump on furniture and comment on his bodily functions in public. He has decided that he no longer naps. A budding rock star, he’s happy playing his drum set and piano while belting out songs ranging from Katy Perry’s “Firework” to his own original compositions. “I love him more than anything,” Brenneis says, “but sometimes his future manager needs a break.” Like many local mothers, Brenneis, a stay-at-home parent in Virgin-

ia Beach, isn’t looking for anything complicated or “exciting” to do with her free time. In fact, she loves just collapsing on the sofa when she’s off parenting duty. “It’s the simple things I like to enjoy,” she says. “I am happy to sit at home with a Diet Dr. Pepper and catch up on past episodes of my favorite shows like “Glee” and “How I Met Your Mother”. It’s great just to be able to sit and get away from the stress of parenting, even if it’s only 30 minutes at a time.” An unscientific survey of parents taken on area playgrounds found the majority agrees with Brenneis.

Moms love outings - playing sports, taking classes, eating meals with friends, hitting the spa for massages, manicures and pedicures, shopping and even skipping town on overnight girlfriend getaways - but their instinctive first response to the “What do you do with your free time?” question more often involves chilling out at home. “Give me a good magazine and a cup of coffee and I’m all good,” says Camille Martin of Hampton, mother of kids ages 8, 6 and 3. “What I’m really looking for is just to not be interrupted - not by my kids asking for something or even my husband calling me or texting me a bunch of questions. Just quiet. If I have that, I probably could be eating a stale cookie and zoning out and be happy.” Chris Cummings of Yorktown, who

has a 15-year-old son and an 11-yearold daughter, loves watching chick flicks, reading, drawing, painting and working on Sunday school lessons for a class she teaches at her church. Or being less productive: “A good nap is the bomb too!” When Shelia Hicks of Yorktown has the house to herself without two elementary schoolaged boys around, she enjoys baking, crocheting, reading and talking to friends near and far on the phone and on Facebook. Outdoor exercise also is popular among local mothers. Hicks, for example, recently took up fishing with her husband. “He has been teaching me and we’re having so much fun!” she reports. Ellen Wise of Newport News is a frequent jogger on the city’s woody, five-mile Noland Trail at The Mariners’ Museum Park. “I’ve taken my son, who is 12, but honestly I really love just going alone,” Wise says. “Nobody sets the pace but me. I can hear myself think.” Samantha Crist, Wise’s friend and a mom of two tweens in Newport News, prefers yoga or spinning classes at the gym: “I’m moving my body but not in response to what has to be done or what anyone needs. That feels awesome.” For Eva Carmine of Suffolk, horseback riding is a perfect path to relaxation. Carmine, mother of a 2 1 / 2-ye a r - old son a nd 8-week-old daughter, recently got in her first ride in about a year. She has owned her beloved 26-year-old bay horse, Jestic, since she was 12 years old and boards him at a nearby farm where she can take him trail riding. “It’s very peaceful,” she says. “It’s an activity you can do with friends or by yourself. This is my therapy; I can feel my mind unwinding. And even if you don’t ride, you can just go brush the horse.”

More important than what mothers do with free time is that they take it, multiple surveys have shown. Women who give themselves a break from parenting are healthier physically and mentally, cutting down on stress, anxiety and potential physical problems such as headaches and high blood pressure. The problem is that many mothers feel too guilty or busy to focus on themselves. The recent growth of children’s activities and “helicopter” parenting may have worsened that issue, but it’s nothing new. As Anne Morrow Lindbergh - an author, pilot and wife of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh who lived from 1906 to 2001 - once wrote, “By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacationless class.” That doesn’t surprise Sharon Wood of Virginia Beach. “Moms often find themselves giving all they have to their families and leaving very little consideration for themselves,” says Wood, who has two children under

3 and a teenage stepson. “I am definitely guilty of this! Between play dates, potty training and nursing, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day! However, I know it is imperative to carve some time out for my own sanity.” Even 30 minutes once a week helps, she adds: “That small amount makes me a better mom because I get to take a breath and just be me.” Wood runs a Web site called Momondealz, which helps parents take advantage of coupons and other bargains, and she has a list of activities that cost little or nothing. Meals with friends can be at each other’s houses after the kids have gone to bed. Pedicures and manicures can be done in bathrooms and bedrooms at home (just lock the doors!). Going for a leisurely walk is free, as is escaping into a fiction book, easing into a bubble bath or taking a nap. And window shopping, as opposed to shopping sprees, can be pretty darn fun. “I don’t need to buy anything,” Wood says. “Just the ability to walk slowly and actually look around the store as opposed to keeping a 2-year-old from grabbing items or having a meltdown is wonderful!” Robin Shuman of Newport News feels the same way. After dropping her 4-year-old son at preschool, she sometimes pops into a Barnes & Noble and skims through the new magazines for about half an hour. “Sometimes I’m thinking too much about errands and my messy house to totally relax, but it’s still like a good breather,” says Shuman, who is expecting her second child in July. Cummings has found a way to enjoy reading when she’s taking time off with her kids, on family beach trips to Yorktown or Virginia Beach. “Dad and the kids love to boogie board, and I love to sit

under the umbrella and read a good book,” she says. Statistics on how much free time mothers actually have are hard to come by, because definitions of “leisure” can vary and women’s free time can fluctuate widely based on careers, the ages of their kids and other life circumstances. To cite one source - the annual American Time Use Survey from the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics - leisure time for the average woman with a husband and a child younger than 18 ranges from about three to four hours a day (which local women feel might be pretty optimistic). The most common free-time activity in the survey was watching television, which took up between 1 1/2 and 2 hours, 20 minutes of that time. Mothers love their children and spending time with them but also crave time away, studies on Mother’s Day gifts have shown. A poll in

the May 2011 issue of Redbook magazine asked women about their ideal present, and 38 percent voted for “one hour of peace and quiet” - ahead of breakfast in bed (34 percent) and handmade artwork (28 percent). Another survey from the online community “Work It, Mom!” found the most popular gift for women polled was a half day at a spa (22 percent) followed by “several quiet hours to spend by myself” (16 percent) and more sleep (15 percent). And a sampling of 5,000 women from Cozi.com, a free online organizer for families, reported a handmade item as the top wish (35 percent), but a day off from being a mom (13 percent) beat out both flowers (11 percent) and a framed photo (8 percent). Some mothers head out of town to escape. A 2007 poll by the AAA auto and travel association found 24 percent of American women had taken a “girlfriend getaway” in the past three years and nearly 40 percent planned

to go on one in the next three years. The beach was the most popular destination (66 percent), followed by a spa (63 percent), a shopping site (55 percent) and a cruise (55 percent). A growing number of resorts and adventure travel companies now offer all-inclusive “girlfriend” packages. Robin Shuman hasn’t been on a girlfriend getaway, but she has scored an overnight stay at a hotel - alone. Her husband convinced her to book a room when her son was in a crazy 3-yearold phase, and she got to order room service and sleep late. “It was wonderful,” she says. “Everybody needs time to kind of clear their head.” Just don’t be afraid to ask for that time - even if it’s nothing more than a 10-minute walk with the cell phone turned off. “My little ‘time outs’ may not be very exciting,” says Sharon Wood, “but they carry me through this wonderful roller coaster of being ‘Mommy.’”

Instead of purchasing invitations, we used photo paper we bought several months ago. My husband put Charlotte’s picture on it along with the copy I wrote detailing the party particulars. Together the three of us selected a cute font. My husband designed it so three invitation would fit on a page using a total of four photo pages. Plain envelopes (which we also had) were used. Cost: 0 Entertainment was easy. Nine-yearold girls love to dance and this group was particularly competitive. So I sent my husband out to the shed in search of a limbo stick. He found one and searched his CD collection for music. No limbo songs in his collection, so we just settled on Reggae. We had to move some living room furniture to make a spacious dance floor, but it

worked. The girls asked several times to do it again. Cost: 0 2. Plan in Advance I planned the menu in advance to take advantage of deals. Charlotte asked for corn dogs, one of her favorites. I had already thought of hot dogs. We agreed to have both. Each girl gave her preference when they RSVPed. I shopped at Save-A-Lot and Bottom Dollar to make the most of my budget. I purchased hot dogs, buns, corn dog, chips, juice boxes and oranges. I started weeks before and reserved a spot in the pantry strictly for party items. At Bottom Dollar, I found store-brand canister style chips (another Charlotte favorite) for 50-cents. I bought the limit of four. I also spotted a deal on drink boxes for

We made cupcakes the night before the party and frosted them the next morning. I had white cake mix sitting in the pantry. Charlotte protested at first, but I let her select the frosting, which of course was chocolate. Together, it made one tasty cake. To decorate we searched the pantry for sprinkles from other dessert decorating events. We settled on red shiny sprinkles (from Christmas cookies) which looked great on the chocolate. I placed the cupcakes on a pedestal cake platter I bought several years ago at a thrift store and completed the display with the nine candles. Cost: $3 Plates and plastic utensils were purchased at another deep discount store. Cost: $4

3. Thrifty can be Fun The second reason kids come to a party is for the goody bags. My daughter has come home with some pretty elaborate ones over the years, some of which appeared to be more of a birthday gift rather than a thank you gift. Here is where I felt the pressure. I bought a few pieces of candy at an after-Valentine’s Day sale, but still needed items for the bags. In the past, I’ve had luck at a local craft and fabric store, so I went there searching for a deal. There I saw the word that would save the day - clearance. I went straight to it and found half-off items that are normally $1. I found a sparkle change purse for each girl, and a craft kit with little markers included. A few weeks earlier, at a NASA Engineer’s Week event, I picked up free laminated book marks that I also included in their goody bags. The goody bags were plain brown lunch bags decorated with stickers that I found for $1. Cost $20.

4. Bringing it All Together Now, I had to think about Charlotte’s gift from us. A few weeks before the party, our printer ran out of ink. My husband searched through the sale ads comparing deals. Finally he said the only deal he could find was a free iTunes gift card with purchase. Charlotte has a MP3 player and has been asking for more songs, so here was our answer. Cost: free Finally, the thank you notes. Looking in our desk drawer, we found old resume paper. Using the same font and format as the invitations, I printed “Thank You on the top of the pages, leaving a place for a personal message. Charlotte decorated them with leftover stickers from the goody bags. Cost: free. Total cost of the party including tax: less than $60. Giving my daughter a great birthday party at that price - needless to say - priceless

The childcare hunt can be as simple as Do your research, visit the centers and trust your gut. BY KRISTEN DE DEYN KIRK Jessica Barton of Ft. Myers, Florida thought she was ahead of the game when she was five months pregnant. “I made a list of all of the daycare centers in the area and called them to find out at what age they took infants; what was their weekly fee; what items did I need to provide (diapers, bottles); what were their security measures; could they provide references; and did they have registration fees and a waiting list,” she remembers. “I was surprised to find that most of them had a 12-month waiting list, which was confusing, because last time I checked, you only know you’re pregnant for nine months!” Barton was on the right track even though she was frustrated. She was organized with a list of centers and questions. Roadblocks such as wait lists and age restrictions make Moms and Dads pull out their hair, but the smart ones know they can push through such setbacks. The keys are persistence and focus on your child’s well-being: What’s most important is that you find a place where your child will be loved, protected and nurtured — and not cost you more than a year

of college tuition. Mary Zurn, who has a doctorate’s in early childhood education and is vice president of education and professional development for Primrose Schools, recommends that parents look for a place where their child will be cared for by familiar adults. “Children benefit from having the same teachers care for them every day in a safe and secure environment,” she notes. So...one of your first questions should be about the school’s turnover rate. In addition, Zurn wants parents to make sure teachers focus on children’s care and education: “With a careful combination of academics and play, children are prepared for both the social and educational aspects of elementary school.” Asking for some facts and figures can help parents determine if a daycare will address both. Zurn recommends these questions: What is the student-to-teacher ratio? How does it compare to state standards? Can the teachers take care of the number of children they have? Are teachers also able to spend some oneon-one time with children? “Even in group care, it is important that children get a healthy dose of one-on-one time,” she notes.

What are the teachers’ qualifications? What are the training requirements for teachers? Is there ongoing professional development for teachers? Are teachers certified in First Aid and CPR? “Caregivers with degrees and/ or special training will be better able to help your children learn,” she says. Is the school accredited? Does the accreditation process include both internal and external evaluations on an ongoing basis? Accreditation means that the childcare center meets voluntary standards for childcare that are higher than most state licensing requirements. What are the center’s policies? What are the center’s policies on safety and parent communications? How does the center handle sick children? What are the payment options?

What do the other parents think? What preschools and childcare centers do your friends recommend? What qualities of childcare centers are most important to them? Talk to people you know and trust about their choices for their children’s care and education.

Parents should also ask about the following while at the center:

„

Are background checks on file?

So many questions, huh? And guess what? You’re just getting started. You’re also going to talk with the daycare directors and teachers in person. Be sure to look for a place that is literally welcoming. Can you stop by anytime to take a tour? If not, the center might have two faces - one that’s not so clean and happy and another that’s pristine and cheerful only for announced guests. For your initial visit, try a midmorning time. Children should be engaged in many activities, and the staff should be warm and friendly and regularly interacting with the children. You can usually gauge the feeling once you walk in.

„

Do they practice fire drills?

„

„

„

What’s on the playground and how much time do children spend outside?

Are the infant teachers trained about SIDS? Have there been any violations with state agencies in the past two years?

If a center has applied for state licensing, a parent can review past audits and read what is on the report. Search for the facilities you’re interested in at http://www.dss.virginia. gov/facility/search/cc.cgi. If you do this, be sure to ask the center about any violations and how they’ve been addressed. Virginia requires all nonreligious-based centers to be licensed and religious-based ones to submit

much of the same paperwork as required of licensed centers. To find out what is required of daycare centers locally, check the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Elementary online at http://nrc.uchsc.edu /STATES/VA/virginia.htm. While you’ll find five different documents regulating health and safety of childcare centers, the Virginia Department of Social Services’ 100-page document is the most comprehensive. In 2008, Virginia introduced a Star Quality Initiative. Centers can volunteer to participate. Licensing is still the bare minimum required of each non-religious center, and the state can award stars for quality above and beyond the minimum if the center decides to participate. Learn more at www.vecf.org/ va-star-quality-initiative. All of this research is necessary to put your mind at ease. Yet, in the end, it’ll probably be your gut that tells you what decision to make.

I asked friends and family for recommendations, and basically, they said “anywhere and “everything. Once we arrived in Disney, I understood why: You can’t really go wrong at any of the Disney resorts (lots of difference price ranges and packages to choose from) nor theme parks. However, I’d like to help other moms like me (bless your poor soul) who would feel more comfortable with concrete details. So here we go: You will find a place to eat, unless you insist on a sit-down, served meal. Several people told me to book reservations way in advance, but as you can see, I’m not a planner. I would hate to be in line or ready to see a show and have to leave because we had a reservation somewhere. Disney has tons of decent fast food places that will not kill you - and they offer a variety at each park.

You must check your child’s safety restraint yourself. The first time my son hopped on a roller coaster was at Disney, and it was Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom. The attendant told us “it’s not that bad; it doesn’t go upside down. So we got on, each in a separate seat in a single row. When the ride ended, my boy said he was never going on a rollercoaster again. Did I mention that Space Mountain was the very first ride we went on? The bar hadn’t been pulled all the way to his lap, so he felt every bump and turn much more than anyone else. After panicking and figuring I’d be spending a lot of time with him looking at my daughter and husband riding rides, I decided to let him do whatever he wanted. By the next day, he was a rollercoaster pro. He learned how to pull down the bar, I learned how to check it, and we both enjoyed the lighted rollercoasters. (Space Mountain is mostly in the dark.)

Nine-year-old Colin loved the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios, which has an elevator that drops several floors at a time. My 11-year-old daughter cried.

Related to the above: You can change your mind once you’re in line. The kids were with my husband and me as the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios zoomed in to pick us up. It goes 60 mph. Our kids looked

at it, then us, and said they couldn’t do it. They simply found the exit door and walked to the end of the ride and waited for us. I was screaming my head off as it looped circles after circle, so it was nice to not be embarrassed in front of them. Every kid is different. Nine-year-old Colin loved the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios, which has an elevator that drops several floors at a time. My 11-year-old daughter cried.

We loved Animal Kingdom. A friend I spoke to after our trip was speechless when I told her. She found it not as glamorous (true, it’s made to look like under-developed towns) and too low key. The “low keyness” was part of the appeal to us. The safari tour gave us shade, and we got to sit, but we were never bored: Animals were everywhere. I think going in the morning, as we did, is your best bet to see the most “awake” animals. We also had a blast looking for different species of birds in their bird zoo and then

36 | M A Y 2 0 1 1 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

watching monkeys play and swing in another part of the park. We also all loved the rides at Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest is a fun roller coaster because it goes backwards, and Kali River Rapids is perfect on a hot day (and it was super hot at the end of June, to the tune of 100 degrees). When the sign says you’ll get wet, they mean soaked. I think we road it five times. (They do provide a dry, center barrel on the “boat” to protect your bags.

Take advantage of early hours. When you stay at any Disney resort, you’re allowed to enter one park early and stay late at another each day. You don’t pick and choose, though: You’ll get a schedule. The lines are smaller and you feel a little bit special going in early, too. Most likely you’ve heard about the fast pass, a ticket you can get at any ride to save time waiting in line - kind of. The ticket will say what time to come back - and you go into a special line, ahead of everyone else in line, except the people who also have fast passes. Not a perfect system, but your wait will be much shorter (maybe 10 to 15 minutes) versus an hour or two. Note: you can only secure one fast pass at a time. Phone apps are available to tell you ride wait times, and Epcot posts the times on boards throughout the park. Stay calm: If you visit for more than two days, I believe you can hit all of the hot spots at Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. (We didn’t attempt the water parks; gotta have a reason to go back.) In addition to the ones I’ve already recommended, I advise putting these on your list: Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin and Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom, Toy Story Mania at Hollywood Studios, and a recycling race at Epcot. A note about Epcot: While it has good rides, including Soarin’ and Test Track, it’s mostly about education and foreign travels. (Oh, I should also recommend the Kim Possible mission there , which sends kids on a scavenger hunt of sorts.) Plug your ears when at the Epcot rides: They not only post warning signs, they also have recordings that will unnecessarily scare you. I almost didn’t go on Test Track because of the warning, and while the ride was fast, it was mild in comparison to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror.

I love how all of the Avengers have a huge backstory; read about the dark elves, death goddesses and mad titans in Thor’s history here. This film finds Chris Hemsworth playing the powerful but arrogant warrior, cast out of the magical realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, soon becoming one of their finest defenders. The cast in this movie is terrific, including Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Ray Stevenson (Volstagg), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Andrews) and Rene Russo (Frigga). Even if you’re not a comic book fan, this Kenneth Branagh-directed movie is fun for teens and adults.

This western-fused post-apocalyptic thriller is too intense for kids younger than 14, but video-gaming teens will find something to love here. In an alternate world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires, a legendary Warrior Priest (Paul Bettany) who now lives in obscurity among the humans in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Lily Collins) is abducted by a pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He’s joined by his niece’s boyfriend (Twilight’s Cam Gigandet) and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a talented New York attorney, a generous and loyal friend, and a still-single woman. But after one drink too many at her 30th birthday party, she ends up in bed with the guy she’s had a crush on since law school, who happens to be her best friend Darcy’s (Kate Hudson) fiancÊ. Meanwhile, Rachel’s confidante Ethan (John Krasinski) is harboring a secret of his own, and womanizer Marcus (Steve Howey) can’t keep his mind out of the gutter. In a sea of relationship movies, it’s unlikely this one will stand out - especially since we can see the ending coming a mile away — but the fun cast makes it a must-see for romantic comedy fans.

Get ready for installment four (two more are in the works!) of the popular franchise that finds Johnny Depp returning as Captain Jack Sparrow and crossing paths with the beautiful Angelica (Penelope Cruz). But is she just a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth? It seems likely when she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane). The cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

When a lamb named Judah (Georgina Cordova) faces the possibility of being sacrificed at the annual town festival, his stable mates leave their cozy barn and embark on an adventure to find and free their friend. In the process, a story emerges about the King born in their stable more than 30 years earlier. Characters include a lovable pig, a faint-hearted horse, a finicky rat, a rambling rooster, a motherly cow, and a downtrodden donkey.

What you need to do Kids can remove fish sticks from the package and place evenly on the baking sheet, if using commercially prepared fish sticks. Adults should preheat the oven and heat the fish sticks according to package instructions. When fish sticks are done, adults should remove the baking sheet from the oven. Kids can remove flour tortillas from the package, and an adult should slightly heat both sides of the tortilla in a sautĂŠ pan on the stovetop just long enough for the flatbreads to brown slightly. Kids can make the creamy mustard sauce by adding equal amounts of sour cream and brown mustard in a medium bowl (about a half cup of each) and whisking until incorporated. To make the tacos, kids can put a small amount of shredded cabbage mixture atop each tortilla and add two fish sticks and drizzling a little of the creamy mustard sauce on top.

I would talk to the daughter first about her behavior then talk with the mother. This way the daughter understands that other people see her bad behavior and she is not getting away with anything. VKHÂśG KHDUG DERXW WKH PHQVWUXDO F\FOH It had only been a few years since she’d been horrified to learn that there is a skeleton living inside her. We’d helped her through that crisis, and she was hoping that this new menace was just another false alarm. But her mom’s expert testimony was not reassuring. My wife Betsy reports that little Wendy received the details with fascinated dismay. Finally, she asked: “And what do BOYS get?â€? “Nothing like THAT,â€? said Betsy, who was (literally) the first to agree with Wendy that it’s not fair. Luckily it’ll be years before Wendy discovers womankind’s REAL curse - the bind between being a working mother and a stay-at-home mother. Nowadays mothers are expected to

stay at home lavishing all their attention on their children AND to get jobs through which they will find fulfillment while bringing home some bacon. Any woman who fails to do both of those mutually exclusive things will be frowned on by society - or at least by the other half of womankind, which is divided into grim battle lines. Working mothers are made to feel guilty about being away from their kids all day, and their kids sense it and play them like pianos. If they feel under-served, they just say, “Mom, I’m sick; I wanna stay home from school, and suddenly there’s a pintsized Chopin at the keyboard. Also feeling guilty, stay-at-home mothers are as scrappy as short, drunken men in barrooms. These

moms are ready to mop up the floor with anyone who implies that they are not “working. Plus, they have the additional curse of handling everyone else’s loose ends, because their working-mom neighbors suspect they do nothing all day but watch Oprah and flirt with the UPS man. And where are the dads? We are miles away, either suffering horribly at our desks or eating delightful lunches, getting paid top dollar to not wonder what our children are up to. And no one says, “That bum! Why did he have kids if he’s going to get someone else to watch them all day? If Dad comes home from work and changes a diaper, he’s a big hero. When we started our family, Betsy was a full-time baby-wrangler for several years. Then she enrolled in grad school and studied library science. Now she works three days a week as a children’s librarian. Even though she’s away from her own motherly role on those days, ironically most of her job has to do with motherhood. Stay-at-home, super-service moms keep her busy all day as they do their

Working mothers are made to feel guilty about being away from their kids all day, and their kids sense it and play them like pianos. children’s homework. And, when school lets out, kids flock into the library, which is their after-hours club. They are either coming there because their moms aren’t home or because their moms ARE home. At the library, local tax dollars and centuries of technological progress are put to work as two 15-year-old boys sit at adjacent computers and InstantMessage curse words to each other. When the guffaws get too loud, or the nonsense turns physical, or a little kid needs a turn on the machinery, Betsy must intervene like the Mom of Steel.

Betsy’s job really enhances our lives. For one thing, she brings home expertly selected books in such quantity that they accumulate into dunes. A child wallows in the dunes, a book strikes its fancy, and reading ensues. The job has also sharpened Betsy’s disciplinary skills. Besides telling our kids things they need to hear in a prompt and forceful way, she’s begun a bit of community outreach. Standing on the front porch, Betsy sees a seventh-grade boy lounging in the park across the street. “Andrew!” she yells, “Put out that cigarette! You KNOW there’s no smoking

allowed over there.” Betsy just made up that rule, but she had brought The Voice of Authority home from work. Andrew steps on his cigarette and skulks away without so much as giving her the finger. So where does this leave womankind? Still cursed? No, free. When you can’t please everyone, you’re free ignore your critics and do what you want to do (or at least what you need to do). But you knew that. Happy Mother’s Day. Rick can be reached at rickepstein@ yahoo.com.
