Of course, you must be realistic. Cynthia Townley Ewer, author of Houseworks: Cut the clutter, speed your cleaning and calm the chaos and creator of ww.organizedhomes. com, notes that most spring cleaning jobs aren’t within the reach of children below high school age. Nearadult strength is necessary for deep cleaning bathrooms, and near-adult caution is needed for climbing a ladder to a second-story window. But a lack of muscle or maturity doesn’t earn a child a free pass this spring. It is essential, for the child and the household, that all kids clean. “Getting children involved with cleaning is good for the child and the family’s mission, says Jeff Bredenberg, author of How to Cheat At Cleaning: Time-slashing techniques to cut corners and restore your sanity. “You’re trying to bring up your child to be a competent adult. When a child knows what cleaning tools are, he’ll be more competent later in life. If you haven’t gotten your children involved in cleaning in the past, this is the perfect time. Start when the sun starts to shine and everyone’s mood is better than it could ever be on a cold, dark day in the middle of winter. (And, with a nod to Bredenberg’s advice, once you start including the kids in your cleaning routine, don’t stop.) Your first step in enlisting your family’s help?

A look in the mirror. No, not to check for water splashes and toothpaste... Mary Findley, owner of Mary Moppins, creator of www.goclean.com, and co-author with Linda Formichelli of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cleaning, advises checking your thoughts about cleaning. “Watch what you say around your children. If you find yourself saying negative things about cleaning house or doing laundry, guess what attitude your child will have, Findley says. “Wash your attitude with a load of laundry and get rid of the stinkin’ thinkin’. The cleaned-up message you should deliver: “We have a wonderful home, and it is a pleasure to clean it. I’m going to start cleaning so we have a comfortable and healthy place to live, and I’m asking you to join in. “Ignore all bleating and moaning, adds Ewer, the Houseworks author. “In spite of their complaints, they won’t let you down. Once everyone’s on board the We’re Gonna Clean-WhooHoo! Choo-Choo Train, use these tips from Ewer, Bredenberg, Findley and Donna Smallin, author of Cleaning Plain and Simple: A ready reference guide with hundreds of sparkling solutions to your everyday cleaning challenges, to stay on the Tidy Track:

21 | A P R I L 2 0 1 1 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

THINK TEAMWORK: C le a n i ng the bathroom on his own will feel like a jail sentence to a child, but with a parent, even a 5-year-old can scrub with a smile. While Dad wields the bowl cleaner and the tile brush, his helper cleans the sink, polishes the fixtures, empties the trash and hauls towels and rugs to the laundry room. T E S T YO U R T E A M P O W E R : You and one child head upstairs, and your spouse and another child stay downstairs. Who cleans the first room the fastest - or the best?

CALL IN BACKUP: W h i l e o n e family member is vacuuming, a child as young as 3 can follow along behind, cleaning baseboards with socks on her hands. If you have two or more little ones, make it a contest to see whose sock puppet gets dirtiest.

M A K E A G A M E O U T O F I T: Play beat the clock. Set the kitchen timer for 10 minutes and see what you and your young assistant accomplish. Can you get the toilet and the sink counter top scrubbed?

PLAY LIVELY MUSIC: Cra nk up the stereo or let your children wear an Ipod. The music helps them move and be energized.

P L AY W I T H WAT E R A N D SUDS: Let them splash in a little water and write with soap suds on the shower wall. Younger kids can write their A-B-C’s and older ones can write their names.

GET SILLY: Put on Halloween costumes and take periodical breaks from cleaning to scare each other. Wear the costumes outside when cleaning up the leaves you never got to last fall and make your neighbors smile. Or if they seem like the type that can take a joke, sneak up on them, speak in a scary voice and scare them.

DELEGATE: Teens can handle “big jobs.” Once adolescence hits, working with a parent loses its appeal. Solution? Delegate big —but safe — jobs to teen children. Whether they clean and organize the garage, shampoo the living room carpet, or restore order to a jumbled linen closet, they’ll take pride in their work. Smallin cautions parents to keep all the sorting and scrubbing safe, whatever your children’s ages: “Be particularly careful about cleaning products,” she says. “Look for nontoxic cleaning products such as those from Method and Seventh Generation. Another great solution is to eliminate the need for cleaning products altogether by switching to microfiber cloths. Just wet, squeeze practically dry, and then use to clean mirrors, windows, and other hard surfaces with no streaking or lint.” You’ll also want to protect their little egos. Mary Findley, the www.goclean.com creator, says that kids of all ages will soon stop helping if they are criticized at every attempt. “Praise them and give them tons of hugs and personal time with you and not a financial or material gain. Keep the allowance out of it,” she says. “Yes, a lot of people will object to this, but allowance should not be a part of chores. You can emphasize, however, that by helping with chores you have extra time to read to them or do a craft project. Then let your child draw out of a bowl what you will do together.” You can also take the Cinderella approach: Everyone cleans all day, then dresses up and heads for a night on the town. A movie, dinner and dessert enjoyed outside of the house means your home stays clean - at least until tomorrow.

A step-by-step checklist for spring cleaning

Kitchen

Clean refrigerator and freezer, inside and out.

Unless you’re Super Woman, you shouldn’t tackle spring cleaning the house on your own (see article) or without a plan. A lot of the same tasks are repeated from room to room. Don’t think of it as boring. Think of it as a chance to master each task in a matter of a few days! This list, compliments of compliments of SC Johnson’s rightathome.com, will get you started. Check the site for tips on tools and cleaning supplies and printable forms, complete with an “assigned to” line for each task. And if you’re really ambitious and energetic, you can also head outside.

Clean inside of microwave. Put a microwave-safe bowl of water with some lemon juice in your microwave and heat the water to boiling for 2 to 3 minutes.

Clean window treatments.

Dust tops of cabinets and refrigerator, cookbooks and cookbook shelves. Take the opportunity to give away any cookbooks you’re no longer using.

Clean and shine counters, drawers and shelves.

Reorganize contents of pantries, cabinets, drawers and spice racks so everything is easy to find.

Sweep, vacuum and mop floors. Save cleaning the floor for your last task in the room.

Polish metal hardware on cabinets,

Yep, they have a list for that, too.

Bathroom

Throw out expired cosmetics, beauty products and medications. Place in doubled-up trash bags (to prevent kids or pets from getting into medications.) Throw away mascara after three months, creams and liquids after a year and powders after two years. Organize toiletries, makeup and medicine for easy access. Vacuum and wipe walls and ceilings. (Before washing walls, determine water resistance of all paint and wall coverings. Latex and oil-based paints are generally safe to wash. If your walls have a rough texture, use old nylon stockings instead of a sponge that could tear.

Clean window treatments.

Completely clean the toilet, including the toilet tank, even its back if you can reach, and base.

Living room

Store heavy, cold-weather fabrics and replace with lightweight ones.

Clean window treatments.

Wash inside of windows.

Wash walls and ceilings

Shampoo or steam-clean wallto-wall carpets, area rugs and upholstery.

Clean shelves.

Clean out fireplace for the season; store unused logs.

Clean and condition wood furniture.

Utility room

Clean window treatments.

Remove lint from clothes dryer hose. Replace lint catcher on washer hose.

Scrub sink.

Maintain sink drains with a product like Drano.

Wash walls.

Scrub shower or tub.

Bedrooms

doors and windows.

Launder or dry-clean winter bedding and store. (To minimize storage space, close the seal, leaving about a half inch. Then roll up the bag, pushing out extra air. Get as much air out as possible; then close the bag entirely.

Home office

Clean window treatments.

Vacuum and wipe walls and ceilings.

Clean out files. Shred tax forms you no longer have to keep. Review and update insurance policies, contracts and household inventories.

Wash window treatments.

Clean inside of window.

Wash walls.

Shampoo or steam-clean carpets, area rugs and upholstery.

Shine and protect wood furniture.

Toss or give away unwanted items: books, toys, games, electronics, etc.

Properly dispose of or give away any unwanted software, hardware or electronics.

Take books and accessories off shelves. Dust all.

footprints Reduce your family’s carbon footprint, together.

of the U.S.S. Enterprise but at least you’re keeping the landfills a little lighter and your wallet a little heavier. Organize a “clean out the house” day. This is a good way to “recycle” items in your home. Put your kids in charge of a “clean out the house” day in which you give them big boxes and let them throw their unused stuff into the box to take to the thrift store. If the younger ones seem hesitant at first, a round of applause might be just enough to encourage them to take part.

BY VINCENT SCHILLING There’s no better time to impress upon your children the importance of respecting our world than when they are young. But in a world of greenhouse gas emissions, factory pollution and adult-level environmental concerns, how can we guide our children to feel they too can make a difference? Though their tiny carbon footprints may not seem to add too much, the best answer is to simply tell them they make a difference, no matter how small the contribution. So, after some research and careful thought Tidewater Parent compiled a few ideas we felt were easy for families today to incorporate into their everyday routine. Below are our suggestions.

Turn household trash into crafts. Now, we aren’t suggesting you go diving into the kitchen trash and wipe away coffee grounds to salvage a paper plate, but before you plunk down big bucks buying craft supplies, why not use what you already have in your home? If you do some research online or peruse a few craft books you can find ideas for some really fun projects made from toilet paper tubes, cereal boxes and plastic cups. No, it probably won’t be a miniature replica

Take the kids to the thrift store. If you read the above paragraph - you’re already planning a trip to the thrift store, so you might as well do some shopping to cut down on waste and throw in a bit of “thrifty-thinking” teaching while you’re at it. Take the kids to the library How many times have we “given-in” and bought that DVD, picture book or CD from the bargain bin at TJ Maxx

family tradition without knowing it.

just to avoid the sobs of anguish? Why do we so often forget these things are free if you check them out of the library? So instead of saying “No, say, “Let’s go to the free book place. The best part is you get to take the item back and let someone else enjoy it instead of having it take up space on a shelf collecting dust. Take a bike - together. We know this isn’t going to fly with your 17-year-old. But if your children are younger consider biking together to piano lessons, the pool, or some other local destination. You might be shocked by how easy it is to save time and gas while reducing your carbon foot print - together. The exercise you get is also a great benefit. Don’t have a bike? Check out the thrift store. Spend an

average of ten to thirty bucks, throw a little lubricant on the chain, put some air in the tires and you should be good to go. Board game night. We can hear the groans from your children already. But if you make some popcorn, and turn off the TV, computer and cell phones, not only are you saving energy, you’re connecting as a family. Who knows, you may be starting a weekly

Less meat, less heat. A lot of folks don’t realize how much energy goes into that roast beef sandwich or hamburger. Statistically, worldwide agriculture (to include livestock production) accounts for a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, just a few percent under deforestation. So what does this mean? It means you should make more veggie-oriented meals for your kids. This doesn’t mean your kids have to carry a bouquet of carrots in their school lunch, it means on occasion, include items such as bean burritos with salsa or guacamole or a few peanut butter and raisin celery sticks. Check out a great book called The Vegan Lunchbox for some fun and healthy ideas.

keep in mind Most CIT positions are unpaid, but trainees often pay substantially reduced rates for participating in summer programs based on their service to the camp. Not all programs require that leadership trainees be former campers. Many camps will consider unknown candidates who have a proven track record of responsibility and maturity. The application process for leadership training programs varies from camp to camp. Call early to get the specifics about the camps your child is interested in.

Hop Not yet rated; likely PG. In theaters 4/01. Ok for kids 7+. www.iwantcandy.com Think all those holiday mascots are geeked about their job? Not so. A young bunny (voiced by Russell Brand) is about to be crowned the new Easter Bunny, but he’s not so sure he wants the job. He’s content to hang out, play his drums, and kick back with some tunes. So he heads off to Hollywood to find fame and fortune and, hopefully, land a gig playing in a band. But those plans go awry when he’s hit by a car driven by Fred (James Marsden), who agrees to take him in. Blending live action with computer animation, this movie looks really cute and also stars Kaley Cuoco, David Hasselhoff and Chelsea Handler. It’s directed by Tim Hill, who also helmed 2007’s ‘Alvin and the ‘Chipmunks.’ Look for bits of crude humor here and there, like the bunny pooping jelly beans and rebelling at having to sleep among his poo.

Soul Surfer Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 4/08. Ok for kids 12+. www.soulsurferthemovie.com Just watching the trailer for ‘Soul Surfer’ gives me goosebumps! It’s a great story and also signals the return of AnnaSophia Robb to theaters after a short hiatus. She plays Bethany Hamilton, the real-life teenage surfer who made headlines after los-

ing her arm in a shark attack. Bethany is ready to throw in the towel, but decides to surf again after receiving tons of mail from kids all over the country. Directed by Sean McNamara (‘Raise Your Voice’), this movie also stars Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid as her parents, and Carrie Underwood as her youth group leader.

Born To Be Wild Rated G. In theaters 4/08. Ok for kids 7+. www.imax.com/borntobewild This 3D documentary follows the story of orphaned orangutans and elephants and the people who rescue and raise them, then return them back to the wild. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this film is not only inspiring, but also takes us into some gorgeous places across the globe. We journey into lush rainforests of Borneo with world-renowned primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas, and across the rugged Kenyan savannah with elephant authority Dame Daphne Sheldrick.

Atlas Shrugged, Part 1 Rated PG-13 for some sexuality. In theaters 04/15. Ok for kids 12+. /www.atlasshruggedpart1.com Based on Ayn Rand’s 1956 novel, this film stars Taylor Schilling as Dagny Taggart, a woman who runs the largest railroad company in America with integrity, despite a few labor

issues. She’s drawn to industrialist Henry Rearden (Grant Bowler); his super-strong metal alloy might help to rebuild Taggart’s company. It’s a story about thinkers, industrialists, scientists, artists and other innovators during an intriguing time in history. I’m excited to see how director Paul Johansson brings the book to the screen.

Rio Not yet rated; likely PG. In theaters 04/15. Ok for kids 7+. www.rio-themovie.com I love the tagline for this movie: “One out of every 8 Americans is afraid of flying. Most of them don’t have feathers. That sums up this cute family movie about Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg), a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota who meets the fiercely independent Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and takes off to Rio de Janeiro to be with the bird of his dreams. Of course, it’s not love at first sight - Blu can’t even fly, for crying out loud. But the two birds are thrown together in an adventure about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life’s many wonders. Colorful backdrops, vivid characters, a heartwarming story, and cool Latin and contemporary music make this a winner.

Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil

African Cats Rated G. In theaters 4/22. Ok for kids 7+. disney. go.com/disneynature/africancats D isneyNat u re continues its trend of releasing lovely Earth Day movies with ‘African Cats,’ a real-life tale of love, humor and determination. The story features Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mom to five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a once banished lion. It’s directed by Alastair Fothergill, who also helmed DisneyNature’s ‘Earth’ and ‘Deep Blue.’

Rated PG for some mild rude humor, language and action. In theaters 4/29. Ok for kids 7+. www.hoodwinkedtoomovie.com This sequel to the popular 2005 movie finds teen Red Riding Hood (voiced by Hayden Panettiere) training in a distant land with a covert group called the Sister Hoods. Red and the Wolf (Patrick Warburton) are called upon by Nick Flippers (David Ogden Stiers), head of the Happily Ever After Agency, to investigate the disappearance of Hansel (Bill Hader) and Grendel (Amy Poehler). Other voices include Glenn Close (Granny), Martin Short (Kirk the Woodsman), Joan Cusack (Verushka the Witch) and Brad Garrett (Giant). I loved the first ‘Hoodwinked’ and this one looks to deliver the laughs, as well.

Prom Rated PG for mild language and a brief fight. In theaters 4/29. Ok for kids 9+. disney.go.com/disneypictures/prom Several stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches in this Disney film about the precarious passage from high school to independence. For Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden), it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy (Thomas McDonell) who gets in the way of her “perfect prom. Fellow seniors Mei (Yin Chang) and Tyler (De’Vaughn Nixon) harbor secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation surrounding one of high school’s most seminal events. Some good eggs Our Heavenly Deviled Eggs provide a terrific taste of spring BY PATRICK EVANS-HYLTON

Here, deviled eggs are a sign of spring, and often only served in the spring and summer months. They are usually presented as a snack, an hors d’oeuvres or appetizer, and although there are commonalities between dishes, usually there is lots of room for individual expression from cook-to-cook.

Deviled eggs pretty much start the same way: hard boiled eggs are sliced open, the yolk removed and mixed with a number of ingredients, and then spooned back into the egg whites. Often the yolks are mixed with mayonnaise and mustard as a base, although sometimes yogurt, sour cream or tartar sauce are used, among others. Most of the time additional ingredients, such as seasonings and spices, are added to the mix too. Frequently those ingredients include a hot component, whether it is hot sauce, cayenne pepper, horseradish and the like, which gives these eggs their moniker, “deviled. Our Heavenly Deviled Eggs are

based on a traditional deviled egg recipe, but we like to use thick, delicious Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise and, if making for young palates, usually keep the heat to a minimum, spicing the dish only with salt and pepper and a dusting of paprika on top which serves as more of a garnish than flavoring agent. Quick and easy are key words. Deviled eggs are quick and easy to make; we give our best instructions below on boiling the eggs perfectly, and a simple filling that is flavorful and has wide-appeal. The filling is also a very basic one, and can be changed and adapted to you and your family’s tastes.

Kids can carefully peel the eggs and set them aside. An adult should cut the eggs in half, remove the yolks, and place them in a medium-sized bowl.

What you need to do

Kids can measure out the yogurt, mustard, salt and pepper and any optional ingredients and place in the bowl with the yolks. Kids can use a fork to mash all the ingredients together, and a spoon to transfer the yolk mixture to a quart-sized zip-top plastic storage bag.

Have kids place eggs in the bottom of a medium-sized pot and cover the eggs in cold water. Adults should place the pot on the stove and bring the water to a rolling boil; once at the boil, an adult should turn down the heat and simmer the eggs for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, an adult should drain the eggs and cover them in cold water. Kids can throw in enough ice cubes to fill up the pot. Let the eggs cool and then they are ready for kids to crack and peel.

An adult can cut a small bit off one of the tips from a bottom corner of the plastic bag and kids can use it as a pastry bag to squeeze the yolk mixture into the egg white halves. Kids can dust the top of the eggs with a little paprika.

let’s talk

Spring fever has hit my kids hard this year. All they want to do is play outside, and I have to nag them constantly to get them to do homework and their school projects. How can I keep them focused? Keep Them on Track Warmer weather and longer days usually add up to the urge to spend more time playing outside. While you allow your child to enjoy the weather and sunshine, it is important to keep him on track in school. To keep your student focused, it is important to remember to set good guidelines and goals. I have three things I focus on when working with parents that I call the three Cs: Communication, Consistency and Consequences. Step One: Communication. It is im-

portant to clearly communicate your expectations to your child. Make sure you do not leave wriggle room for all those budding attorneys. Step Two: Consistency. It is easy to let things slide, after all it’s springtime and you want to see your child outside enjoying the sunshine. However, changing schedules is difficult. Children need structure and consistency. It is fine to deviate a little, but make sure you have clear boundaries. Step Three: Consequences. Make this your mantra: Clearly say what the consequences are for any action

49 | A P R I L 2 0 1 1 | www.MyTidewaterMoms.com

and then follow through. Remember consequences should be known in advance and be part of the family rules such as: If you do not come in when it is time to come in, tomorrow you will not be allowed to go out and play after school. So make sure to use you’re the Cs or you may end up with the fourth C, Chaos. Kathleen Cosco, M.S., Ed. School Counselor Camp Allen Elementary School Norfolk

let’s talk

Allow for Breaks

Offer Incentives

Children have been in school all day in a structured environment. After school they want and need time to play independently. Having them come inside and do homework, directly after school does not provide a much needed break. On pretty days, let them go outside, but place them on a schedule. Outside play is much more creative and much healthier than being inside. Ann Robinson School Counselor Sedgefield Elementary School Newport News

Spring fever can be chaotic, but it also provides useful energy. The key is to channel that energy with the use of incentives. The children want to play but we need them to work. Use the traditional approach of work first, and then play outside. Depending upon the age of the child, you might expect 20 minutes of homework, then a break of 10-20 minutes of play outside. You may also consider having afternoon snack outside for a change. Jennifer Sherbrook Kindergarten Teacher KPC Day School Virginia Beach

Next month’s question My nine-year-old daughter plays with a girl who is mean to her younger brother and sister when her mom is out of the room. My daughter has asked me to speak to the mother. How should we handle this? If you have a parenting question of your own, or if you’d like to answer a question already asked, send your questions or responses to Jennifer O’Donnell, editor, at jenny. odonnell@pilotonline.com.

Somehow linked to this naive desire for truth is an expectation of justice. “It’s not fair, protested my seventhgrade daughter one day after school. “Our whole class has detention just because there was some trouble in French class, Sally said. She handed me a slip of paper that said: Dear Parent: Your child will have detention for 30 minutes on Friday. The class is being punished for unruly behavior. Please sign this note to acknowledge receipt of this information. - Mrs. Johnson If I’d protested the unfairness of such a situation to my father, he would’ve said for the 200th time: “Ninety percent of life is unfair. This statistic is kind of a family heirloom, but I resisted the urge to pass it down to Sally. She complained, “I told Mrs. Johnson I was being good, so why should I have to stay after? And she said some junk like the class is a community and we are responsible for each other. The TEACHERS are supposed to make us behave. They shouldn’t try to make us do their job. Sally cannot be buffaloed, which makes it hard to be her teacher (or her

father). When I was in seventh grade, I was just figuring out that teachers were PAID. It had been my impression that they came to school every day just to see my mischievous smile - and to enjoy God-like power over us. I told her, “Things haven’t changed. When I was a kid, teachers were always punishing the group for the crimes of the few, and then, unaware of any irony, they would marvel, ‘Isn’t it a shame that a few kids spoil things for everybody else?’ “Didn’t you get mad? she asked. “I did! I said. “But not as mad as the kids who had been good. I don’t know much about teaching, but I’ve seen enough adventure-onthe-high-seas movies to know something about discipline and mutiny: The captain who hangs the ringleaders will survive, while the captain who puts the entire crew on half-rations will soon be thrown to the sharks. The successful captain is harsh, but fair. It was with this principle in mind, that four years ago I borrowed a lot of money and built an addition onto our house. I wanted all three sisters to have their own rooms. Each girl happily saw her room as a sanctuary where she could read and write and

dream in privacy. I saw those rooms as cells. I figured that when Sally and her sisters were fighting, I would tell the chief instigator, “Go to your room! The combatants would disengage without appeal and the wrongdoer would stomp angrily up the stairs, weep bitter tears into her pillow and then gaze out the window while reflecting upon her sins. Finally, I would come in, complete the rehabilitation with a few improving remarks, and that would be that. But here’s what happens: Nearly always, the girls will bedevil each other until blows are exchanged and someone gets hurt and more slapping and punching ensues amid yelling and crying. It’s a spiral of misbehavior in which victim and aggressor blur together. It is never clear which one I should punish. And since I never got over my childhood obsession with fairness, I punish no one and those costly cells upstairs are never used for their intended purpose. The doors, which were meant to muffle the remorseful sobs of captives, are mere percussion instruments as they are slammed by their owners and pounded upon by invading siblings. At the risk of spreading our household disorder to her school, I looked at the slip of paper and told Sally, “This is baloney. Keeping in mind that Sally could be exaggerating her innocence, I wrote on the slip: “Is Sally guilty of being noisy or is she only guilty of being in a noisy class? If Sally was not noisy, please send her home at the usual time. And voila! On Friday afternoon, Sally sailed home from school with a full pardon, while the rest of her wicked shipmates languished in irons. Sally, being a seventh-grader, is too cool to throw her arms around me and bless my cunning and scrappiness. But SOMEONE ought to. I hate unattractive boasting, and I don’t like to out-do my dad, but sorry! On MY watch, only 89 percent of life is unfair.

But when it comes to Aidan, our 1st grader, I’m a bit more particular. Some of that comes from my son. He’s at the age where he often knows better, but doesn’t have a part of his brain developed that tells him to listen to the other part that knows better. It’s as if he has a warning light in his brain that he just ignores until something starts to smoke. You know, just like we adults treat our cars. He’s not a bull in a china shop and most other parents consider him to be rather polite, but I see him on a daily basis and I’m well aware of the chaos that he can unleash. No, he won’t burn anybody’s house down or make you call the police, but it shouldn’t shock anyone that his mother and I have considered changing his middle name to “Trouble. But a bigger part of it is you, the parent who invited my son over for a play date. Unless you and have known each other since we were kids or I’ve been in your house multiple times, I don’t trust you. Oh, I’m sure you’re a good person and hold down a good job. Or maybe you’re a stay-at-home parent who does a fantastic job raising you kids. I’m pretty sure you aren’t smoking crack or living in a den of inequity. Doesn’t matter. Unless you’re

willing to submit to random drug screenings, surprise inspections, a written test on modern first aid techniques and an oral exam on what Aidan’s mom and I consider good role modeling and parenting skills you are probably out of luck. I don’t think you’re a bad person or that you would intentionally cause any harm to my son. It’s just that my oldest son is at a point in his life where everything other people - kids and adults - do matters. He’s soaking up information and experiences so fast that we’ve got engineers from Microsoft hovering around our house 24/7 to see if they can glean anything from him about how to build the next cloud computer - whatever that is. It’s so bad that his teacher said “dude once and Aidan ended every sentence with “dude for the next four-and-a-half months. It wasn’t so bad at first. In fact, we liked to pretend we were living with a worldclass surfer who happened only be four feet tall. But “Merry Christmas, dude, “Good night, dude and “I’m pretty sure those aren’t my boogers on the wall, dude gets old faster than you think. To call him impressionable at this young age is a bit of an understate-

ment. The problem is that my wife and I don’t get to be the sculptors. We try to model good behavior and speak in volumes that don’t shake the picture frames off the walls. We only walk, not run, through the house. We never, ever talk with food in our mouths and we certainly don’t use “dude to punctuate the end of our sentences. So please don’t take offense; I’m sure you’re a lovely person and that your children will grow up to do great things. I’m just not sure we can afford to take the risk that you might accidently let a bad word fly and then my wife and I will be forced to apologize to teachers, clergy, elderly relatives and the occasional rodeo clown about why Aidan uses words that would make a sailor blush. Nope, we just want what’s best for our children. And, to be honest, that could actually be you and your children. We realize that at some point we have to escape our play date-free bubble and let our rather gregarious son socialize with his peers. After all, we definitely don’t want him to grow up to be the type of teenager who sits at home and does origami on Saturday nights while my wife and I try to hold back our tears in the other room. So we understand that he needs to be social and that if you ask nicely and submit to random drug screenings, surprise inspections, a written test on modern first aid techniques and an oral exam on what Aidan’s mom and I consider good parenting skills - we will probably allow our son to hang out with your child. In the long run it has to be good for him. But you have to promise us one thing during the play date: No one in your family can ever say the word “dude.
