“When a friend was pregnant with her first child, I asked the extended family and her close friends to send me a 9X9-inch square of fabric that represented their hobby, something that represented them in some other way, or something they wanted to teach the child one day, says Candace Jones of Irving, Texas. “We had fabric from a grandma’s apron, an uncle cut up one of his lucky flannel fishing shirts and an older cousin sent a t-shirt from his college alma-mater, hoping to recruit early, says Jones. “Another family member cut some fabric from the great grandmother’s sewing fabrics that had been stored in an attic. Since the great grandmother had recently passed, it was especially poignant for the new mom, she adds. “And a close friend sent fabric from one of her son’s onesies and added a poem, about looking forward to having a new lifelong friend, written in fabric paint across it. The quilt was adorable, and we gave it to the mom-to-be at the shower with a little write up of who sent what, and why.

What you need to do FOR THE BARBECUE SPICE BLEND: Kids can add ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to completely incorporate. FOR THE POTATO CHIPS: An adult should scrub potatoes and slice 1/8inch thick with a mandolin or other handheld slicer; this provides uniformity and allows the chips to cook evenly. Kids can add the slices to a medium bowl of cold water and allow to soak for a half-hour to remove starch. Kids can add slices to a colander, rinse, and drain. Kids can place the slices on a paper towel-lined cookie sheet and gently pat dry. Adults should add oil to a large, heavy saucepan; do not fill more than halfway full. Heat the oil to 350 degrees; if you do not have a thermometer, add one slice to the pan - if it gently sizzles, the oil is ready. Do not overcrowd the pan. Adults should fry the potatoes in small batches until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, adults remove golden chips to a cooling rack set over a baking sheet to drain. While still warm, kids can sprinkle generously with seasoning. Allow to cool and crisp. Yields 4 servings

Now Enrolling For 2012-2013 Montessori is a scientific method of education utilizing hands on materials to teach small groups and individual students. Montessori classrooms are characterized by multi age grouping, student chosen individualized work, (which is guided and directed by a teacher) and student mentors in a collaborative, peaceful environment. Scientific studies indicate that Montessori education leads to students with better academic and social skills. The Montessori Academy absolutely makes this innovative philosophy possible in our community, with their well trained certified faculty and administration.

It’s a whole new ball game out there. T

oday’s kids do more than play sports. They work at sports, training hard yearround to gain a competitive edge. But putting in extra hours does more than fine-tune kids’ skills. It also puts them at increased risk of injury. Fortunately, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters – the name parents trust most for their children’s health care – offers a sports medicine program just for young athletes. We provide a complete spectrum of services, from sports-specific training to diagnosis to surgery to rehab, for athletes of every size, shape, age and ability. Next time your child or teen needs medical help for a sports condition, call 668-PLAY. We have the region’s only experts dedicated exclusively to young athletes at locations in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Newport News.
