DAVID JOYNT Israel spent two generations in the wilderness. It was a time of relocation, leaving behind the secure subjection of life in Egypt. It was a time of dislocation, wandering without a fixed address. It was a time of expectation, a better future in a new land. The prophet Jeremiah also describes it as a time of transformation, a period of intense connection to God. Speaking to Israel, the Lord says, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness in a land not sown. Israel was very holy to the Lord…” During our campus renovation VPC also faces a wilderness sojourn. It will not last two generations! (We anticipate less than one year.) But it will be a time of relocation, dislocation, and expectation, as familiar activities take place in new spaces. It is my hope and daily prayer that it will also be a time of transformation for us as individual disciples. The Israelites grew spiritually during their wilderness period in three ways. Their dependence on God increased, as they cried out for help and saw sustenance fall from the sky and water flow from the rocks. Their ability to follow direction on unfamiliar paths increased. They moved behind God’s cloud by day and his pillar fire by night. They also discovered new dimensions of God’s character and will, revealed in law and covenant. I hope the same things can happen for us, in the next months, at VPC. We can’t go further together than each of us is ready to go individually. We can’t go deeper, as a community, than each of us is willing to travel personally. Are you ready to discover new aspects of God’s will and ways, knowing him more intimately? Are you willing to be more dependent on him, increasing your trust? Are you willing to be directed by him, growing your capacity to follow where he leads? The coming period is a time to invest in your own spiritual growth. Deepen your prayer times. Expand your circle of faith friends. Seek his will in fresh ways. Take a class, read a profound book, ask a penetrating question. Give your time toward a problem, a cause, or a calling. Worship with your whole self. May this next phase of our life together be remembered as a time of transformation, where the saints of VPC learn to be more holy to the Lord. Blessings,

In his classic book, Lewis, one of the most important Christian writers of the 20th century, explores the Christian faith.
