January-May 2022 Spring Ministry Brochure

Page 1

Welcome to the Ministry Brochure! Contents Welcome Dear Friends,

I encourage you to read the Spring 2022 Ministry Brochure! When you do, you’ll be in a better position to understand what God is doing at VPC. This understanding is crucial in three ways:

David Joynt Senior Pastor

First, you’ll be able to pray more concretely and specifically for our work.

Second, you’ll be able to reach out to others more effectively with a better grasp of what programs could benefit them and what ways they can serve. Third, you may enhance your own experience at VPC and of our great God. This will only happen if you do more than simply read and become informed. This brochure is kind of like the rules of a sport. You can understand by grasping all the rules. You could explain it to someone else based on that knowledge. But knowing the rulebook is different from playing! Understanding any sport, like understanding faith, takes on a whole new meaning when you play or participate. Then you know the activity from the inside—what is thrilling and challenging. It’s the same with the Ministry Brochure. Read it and discover where God may be leading you! When you do, you’ll pray more passionately, connect others more purposefully, and experience the church more powerfully. Blessings,

Sunday Worship

Worship Safely

We are encouraged by the high vaccination rates at VPC, but with continued concern over COVID variants, we want to emphasize that anyone who wants or needs to wear a mask should feel free to do so at worship or any of our programs. We love to see you in worship and on campus!

8AM, CHAPEL

We are excited to bring back the unique and expressive worship experience found in the Chapel. The Valley Singers vocal ensemble and organ provide music for this service, along with traditional liturgical elements.

9AM, SANCTUARY & LIVESTREAM

VPC’s first sanctuary service includes music, prayer, space for kids, preaching, scripture, and an emphasis on community. Music is commonly led by VPC’s Chancel Choir and accompanied by our organ.

10:30AM, SANCTUARY & LIVESTREAM

Worship at 10:30AM contains many of the same elements as 9AM. Music is commonly led by VPC’s worship band with drums, guitar, piano, and bass. Whether you decide to attend a specific service because of the time or musical style, you will find space to hear God’s Spirit and respond through Christ-centered worship to God’s acts of salvation and ongoing transformation in the world.

AWAKEN CAFÉ, OPEN 8:30AM-NOON

We invite you to connect with the VPC community before or after worship at Awaken! Proceeds from beverage purchases support VPC’s Mission Partners locally and globally. This is a great place to spend time with friends and family; kids can play in the Awaken Plaza and the indoor/outdoor seating provides a comfortable place to relax all year long.

STARTING IN FEBRUARY The Beatitudes: Living with Christ Part 2 With Pastor David Turner Wednesdays, February 2-23 6-7PM, Chapel

The Sermon on the Mount is the most complete distillation in the New Testament of the value system, ethical standard, and lifestyle of a follower of Jesus—and it all begins with the Beatitudes. In a world that tires of false pretenses and empty promises, the Beatitudes reveal the heart of Jesus and the character of those who follow him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit; Blessed are those who mourn...” Why are these blessings so important? We will examine Matthew’s Gospel and audience and what each of the eight Beatitude character qualities mean.

Lent is a time for growth in three ways: through prayer, through spiritual discipline, and through self-examination. This helps us prepare for Christ’s death and resurrection. A key theme of Lent is reconciliation with God and with one another through the grace of Jesus Christ. This year during Lent we will journey together as a church, share a meal, look to God’s Word to guide us on our journey, and grow as a community as we connect with each other.

Parents with school-age kids FAMILY WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS & KIDS

Families

Family workshops are a way to partner and empower families to be intentional leaders in their child(ren)’s faith. Each year in a child’s development provides new opportunities to explore a life of faith through growing eyes, and we value coming alongside parents during the adventure of parenting to dig deep into the questions and experiences that help kids create a faith of their own.

This is a great idea! Where do I sign up? RSVP for each event will go up a month prior at vpc.church/opendoor. See you there!

The Gospel of John: Chapters 1-11

January 23—February 27 Unlike the other Gospels—which share a good deal of material about Jesus’ life and ministry—the laterwritten Gospel of John provides a personal perspective of the three years Christ spent in ministry. Influenced by subsequent years of revelation and inspiration, John’s writing recounts the hope and glory of a Creation now redeemed by the cross. We will use a variety of resources, including The Bible Project, RightNow Media, and N.T. Wright study guides. We will dig deeper to better understand our Lord and His ministry.

The Gospel of John: Chapters 12-21

March 6—April 10 The last week of Christ’s life takes up nearly half of the Gospel of John. During Lent, we will focus on John’s account of Holy Week, the Last Supper, Christ’s betrayal and arrest, His trial and crucifixion, His bodily resurrection, and Christ’s days with His disciples before His ascension to Heaven. We’ll again use a variety of resources to better comprehend the sacrifice on the cross to redeem Creation and the guarantee of eternal life with God through Christ.

Easter’s Over, Now What?

16

April 24—May 22 Now that Easter is over, how do we continue Christ’s victory over death in our daily lives? We will examine what it means to live a life now set free from sin’s ultimate consequences by the events of Easter, what it means to live with hope and purpose in Christ, and what it means to live a life focused on glorifying God by following in the footsteps of His Son.

Care & Help 22

Deacon Ministries are run by the Deacons of the church, who are nominated and chosen to serve three-year terms. They provide vital services to church members and our community. They are always in need of volunteers to serve in each ministry area. If you would like to help, please contact Pastor David Turner.

DEACON MINISTRY TEAMS After-Care Ministry

Members of this ministry provide follow-up contact for people released from hospitals and rehabilitation clinics, connecting them to support ministries such as Tasty Spoon, Stephen Ministry, or Pet Pause.

Baby Welcome

A small group of Deacons make contact with new VPC parents after they have a baby. They deliver a basket of gifts and provide the family with information on baptism, the nursery, Valley Day School, MOPS programs and Tasty Spoon.

Care Packages

This team sends care packages to college students and active military personnel periodically during the year to express our love to members who are temporarily away from home. Items include food, inspirational mementos and a message from the pastors.

Communion Preparation

An energetic group meets the first Saturday of every month to prepare the communion elements used for the next day’s worship services. They make sure that each of our worship centers is perfectly ordered for the joyous and holy partaking of the Lord’s Supper.

Deacon Fund

This committee oversees the distribution of funds that have been generously donated to the VPC community for the work of the ministries of the Deacons. Support brings encouragement to the sick and lonely, supports those in need, provides a comforting friend in a time of loss, and is a witness to the hope we have in Christ.

First Impression

VPC members trained to be an on-campus welcoming presence to assist guests by helping them find the services they are seeking, and answer questions or direct them to additional resources.

Flower Ministry

We have a group of very creative and compassionate people who oversee the donation of flowers for Sunday services in the Sanctuary and Chapel, and also coordinates the breakdown of the flowers into smaller bouquets and coordinates delivery to our hospitalized or at-home friends later that day.

Health & Wellness

Members of the Health & Wellness Ministry work in conjunction with community resources to provide health and wellness related to on-campus events such as heart screenings, immunization programs, blood drives, and AED & First Aid training for VPC and the surrounding community throughout the year.

Lay Hospital Chaplains

VPC members who are trained and gifted in the area of pastoral care make visits to community members who are hospitalized or in a rehabilitation center. Visits involve being a good listener and praying with members if appropriate.

Memorial Receptions

This team of volunteers prepares and hosts memorial receptions at VPC. The Chair arranges for adequate paper products, beverages, cookie supplies, and enlists the volunteers to host the event.

Staff Appreciation

An innovative team of Deacons blesses staff members by holding a luncheon in the honor of the Church staff and Valley Day School staff twice a year, as well as providing a little gift for each staff member to celebrate their birthday or ministry milestone.

Tasty Spoon

This team recruits VPC members to prepare fresh cooked meals for someone who is homebound, recently released from the hospital, sick or recently had a baby.
