Fall 2022 Ministry Brochure

SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER Fall 2022 MINISTRY BROCHURE

This brochure is kind of like the rules of a sport. You can understand by grasping all the rules. You could explain it to someone else based on that knowledge. But knowing the rulebook is different from playing!

Understanding any sport, like understanding faith, takes on a whole new meaning when you play or participate. Then you know the activity from the inside—what is thrilling and challenging. It’s the same with the Ministry Brochure. Read it and discover where God may be leading you! When you do, you’ll pray more passionately, connect others more purposefully, and experience the church more powerfully.

Second, you’ll be able to reach out to others more effectively with a better grasp of what programs could benefit them and what ways they can serve.

First, you’ll be able to pray more concretely and specifically for our work.

Dear Friends, I encourage you to read the Fall 2022 Ministry Brochure! When you do, you’ll be in a better position to understand what God is doing at VPC. This understanding is crucial in three ways:

YOU’RE INVITED!

We are excited to bring back the unique and expressive worship experience found in the Chapel. The Valley Singers vocal ensemble and organ provide music for this service, along with traditional liturgical elements.

Worship at 10:30AM contains many of the same elements as 9AM. Music is commonly led by VPC’s worship band with drums, guitar, piano, and bass. Whether you decide to attend a specific service because of the time or musical style, you will find space to hear God’s Spirit and respond through Christ-centered worship to God’s acts of salvation and ongoing transformation in the world.

His followers started the first hospitals and hospices. But what does it mean to bring your faith to the practice of medicine and the task of healing today? A distinguished panel of doctors, medical leaders, and counselors discuss the importance of their faith in their work and how their beliefs impact the ethical issues of modern medicine. Come and listen and bring your questions and perspectives!

Presenter – Dr. Warren Pettitt, Arizona Christian University

The integration of our faith into our education and lifelong learning is needed now more than ever. So many questions today need not just information to educate us, but faith to help direct us. Join us as we contemplate the intersection of our faith and our education.

ClassesWEDNESDAYS

Speaker Series: Faith Beyond Sunday September 14—October 5 6-7PM, Facilitator:SanctuaryPastor David Joynt How do we bring our faith to the workplace? As Christians, how do we grapple with the ethical questions that come with navigating the systems and institutions in our culture? These are two incredibly important questions that we will deal with in this series. We invite you to come with your questions and an inquisitive spirit as we hear from people who integrate their faith and their vocation, and identify how our worldview differentiates our choices in healthcare, public policy, education, and parenting.

Presenter – Senator Jon Kyl

All of us form opinions based on our worldview. For many, religion provides at least one perspective, sometimes a major component of our worldview. In the United States, we resolve civic issues through discourse and debate. That process should not exclude opinions based on any worldview, including those based on faith.

October 5: Shaping Our Families & the Next Generation

Presenter – Dr. Terry Hargrave, Fuller Seminary

September 28: Impacting Education & Lifelong Learning

How will you be remembered? Four generations from now your great, great grandchildren and extended family will likely not remember your name. But there is something you can build into your intergenerational legacy that will be totally recognizable as coming from you: the way you weave faith, hope, and love into the fabric of your family and relational tapestry. Come join us on how to put it together for the future of your family and those in your sphere of influence.

FAMILY WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS & KIDS

Family workshops are a way to partner and empower families to be intentional leaders in their child(ren)’s faith. Each year in a child’s development provides new opportunities to explore a life of faith through growing eyes, and we value coming alongside parents during the adventure of parenting to dig deep into the questions and experiences that help kids create a faith of their own.

To give justice to this magnificent work, we will spend our entire fall semester studying Isaiah. We will examine the history of Israel at the time, the book’s poetic structure and, its powerful message of God’s goodness and protection. Isaiah begins at a time when Israel is divided, struggling, and facing conquest, but ends dwelling on God’s promise that He cares for us and is sending One who will transcend all human power.

16 College Age (Ages 18-25)

The Kaleidoscope community is primarily people born 1955—1975, with many who were born outside of that range; however, all are welcome! We strive to be a Christian community that embrace and encourage each other as we follow Christ on the path He sets before us. After every Sunday we send an email that summarizes class, gives updates about other opportunities at VPC, gives space for prayers, and provides a gentle thought for the week.

We are excited to come alongside college students (near or far) as you continue your faith journey this fall. Travis and Student Ministry Assistant Director Wes are available for one-on-one and group discipleship opportunities via zoom or in-person meetings. Also, be on the lookout for possible in-person gatherings near the holidays to hang out and spend time together!

Christmas carols brighten our Advent Season, but how often do we connect those songs to the story of Jesus’s birth? We will match the four themes of Advent (Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love) with the carols we sing, the messages they tell, and the stories behind their compositions. It will connect you in a deeper way to the meaning of Christmas and put a song in your heart!

Worship through song is one of the most powerful ways to connect directly to the love, compassion, power, and grace of God. We are seeking new singers to share that message in VPC’s Chancel Choir! We sing uplifting anthems and lead congregational singing each week at the 9AM service. A four-part vocal ensemble, we sing everything from classical to gospel music. The Chancel Choir is open to all skill levels, high school and above. This year, the choir will prepare two concerts and embark on a singing tour of Austria and Prague in June! If you love spreading the gospel through music, this is the place for you!

Care & Help

Perhaps God is calling you to consider becoming a Stephen Minister? Applications are required, and VPC provides extensive training and ongoing support. Many Stephen Ministers report the role has made them better listeners, improved their personal relationships, and brought them closer to the Lord. If you are interested in joining this team of compassionate individuals, contact Pastor David Turner.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; it is funded through contributions. AA is non-professional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, does not engage in controversies, and neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Their primary purpose is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.

VPC Stephen Ministers are trained congregation members who provide one-to-one confidential care and support to those experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or relocation. They come from diverse backgrounds and share a common passion to bring Christ’s love and care during a time of need. Many in our congregation have enjoyed the friendship of a Stephen Minister. Their services are free and confidential.
