Valley Presbyterian Church February 2018 Volume sixty-three, Number one Dear friends, Risk management is central to life. The 80s and 90s of the last century saw the convergence of previously distinct financial businesses, including investment and banking and insurance. They all began to see their work as different aspects of risk management. Global leaders in politics must also become experts in assessing risk. Of all the risks facing the world, which do you think is the greatest? Global pandemics? Nuclear proliferation? Environmental catastrophe? Financial collapse? Terrorism? I believe the greatest threat is apathy.
Thanks to technological advances, we can retreat into private worlds where we are entertained and distracted. We can shop without going to the store, dine without cooking, research without libraries, visit battlefields without serving in the military, and live out fantasies without even dreaming—all from the comfort of our living rooms. It is entirely possible, and quite tempting, to stay informed and be connected continuously and yet never engage. Indifference to the problems of the world, the nation, and the neighborhood is the greatest danger—and such indifference is ultimately spiritual apathy—because we are taught to pray “Thy kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.” Evaluating a life, understanding a person’s story, is about discovering their passions. In our current sermon series, we are examining some of the original disciples, to sense their passions for God and his Kingdom. I am so grateful for this congregation because you are people of purpose and enthusiasm. My staff colleagues inspire and motivate me, raising my level of engagement and sharpening my focus. Invariably, during a long day or in a low energy moment, a member will share an insight or a story or an experience, and my tank is full of premium again. Thank you for all of the encouragement and for being such dedicated disciples—never underestimate the impact your presence and passion has on our entire staff and all our leaders. The world may be threatened by apathy, but you are the answer! Yours faithfully,
