Volume 60, Number 8 We’ll declare our reasons in songs and poems and all manner of digital media. Your praise will spark mine, and your experience of God’s mercy will recall His goodness in my life and the lives of many others.
Dear friends, Gratitude cannot be summoned by command, nor created by force of will, nor brought to life by earnest endeavor. It is an attitude of the soul that has been infused by God’s spirit. It wells up as we pursue and commune with the One who never stops pursuing us. Gratitude is fundamental to every faith-filled life. It frees the mind from trivial and obsessive desires. It loosens the grip, fueling generosity. Gratitude tames all manner of temptations and calms the anxieties that fuel insecurity and restlessness. Grateful people can live through difficulties and grow the hard virtues of patience, courage and forbearance. Thankfulness is an antidote to jealousy and rancor. Gratitude of faith rests on a hope so real that trials become momentary tests in a battle already won.
Let’s cultivate gratitude together. Let’s make room in our church and in our souls for a new experience of the grace of Jesus Christ. American Quaker Poet John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem (The Brewing of Soma) was adapted into the hymn “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” by Garrett Horder. It says in part: Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! Reclothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives Thy service find, In deeper reverence, praise… Drop Thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace.
Yours in Christ,
Gratitude changes the burden of existence into a delight and allows us to sense the pleasure of God with His children. Gratitude has a physiology – it puts a light in our eyes and a bounce in our step. It turns up the corner of our mouths. It sharpens our senses and coalesces our thoughts and opens our hearts and turns our lives into a deep hallelujah. This fall, we will celebrate, sing, pray, and live our gratitude in every area of our lives together. In every group and gathering, on every single day this fall, we have a chance to express our gratitude and to grow it. The theme is 10,000 Reasons to Praise. Together we will find, within our own lives and souls, the many reasons to say “Alleluia!” We’ll express them in notes and post-its and emails and pictures and installations.

Who We Are Valley Presbyterian Church has a story to tell. It’s a story about the rapidly growing community of young moms who have found a place where they can grow and relax, and where their kids can play and interact. Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) kicked off their year in August amid the conversation and laughter of dozens of moms and their children. “I encourage a lot of moms to come try it who’ve never dropped off before, because it’s a great way for your kids to get ready for preschool,” says Meghan Gottfredson, Coordinator of MOPS and the Nursery at VPC. “The thing that brings us together is that we all have little ones.” “I look forward to coming in… and being able to talk to someone about anything,” states Brianne. MOPS is built around the knowledge that parenting is difficult, but worth every minute. We parent better when we have the opportunity to learn together and hang around others in the same stage of life. Ashley, mother of three, explains, “We’ve had people who have talked about different things about childrearing specifically, but also about how to keep your marriage healthy, or how to remember to be you, and how to fill up your own cup.” Kids love it, too. Jen describes the routine at her house, “All I have to say is, ‘It’s a MOPS morning,’ and my daughter has her backpack, and she’s waiting by
the door with her shoes on, ready to go. That speaks to MOPS; she excited, she’s thrilled, she’s happy to be here.” If you’re interested in MOPS, or if you can’t make Friday mornings but want to connect with other moms, email Meghan: nursery@myvalleychurch.org. VPC welcomes all women of all ages to connect and grow deeper in their faith! If you’re interested in opportunities for women, email our Women’s Ministry Director, Leslie Woodard: lesliewoodard@myvalleychurch.org. Individual Therapy begins September 8 8-Week program begins September 23 In “The Road Less Traveled,” author Scott M. Peck begins his work with a simple and profound statement, “Life is Difficult.” We don’t necessarily live our lives with this in mind, but rather with optimism; and yet our experiences don’t always follow our best laid plans. For those who’ve experienced the trauma from the ending of their marriage, it can be one of the most painful of all losses. As a community that believes God has the power to heal our deepest wounds, Valley Presbyterian Church is proud to offer an exceptional Divorce Recovery program to our church and community. New in our amazing 8-week Divorce Recovery program is the addition of individualized therapy sessions available through the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program of Fuller Theological Seminary. This opportunity, and the 8-week program will be led by Marriage and Family Therapists-in-Training under the supervision of VPC member Dr. Gloria Gabler. To learn more about this program, as well as individualized therapy sessions. please contact David Turner or Tammy Milne.
